According to Jovoy Parfums Rare owner Francois Henin, the idea for Sora Dora and Jovoy Paris’ collaboration RED happened at a night after Esxence 2023. Quentin Dorado from Sora Dora was at a night club in Milan spraying the first iteration of what would later become this final perfume and Francois – I imagine in his inimitably jovial style – sought him out and made no secret of his love for the sillage, telling Quentin that it was the type of perfume he’d love to release himself. There and then, over broad, enthusiastic smiles, probable hugs and the clinking of cocktail glasses, the collaboration was cemented.

Sora Dora RED x Jovoy Paris composed by perfumer Margaux Le Paih-Guérin is ostensibly a contemporary gourmand perfume that uses notes of brown sugar, hazelnut and coconut to accentuate its musk augmented sandalwood base. In its depths it’s close and made sensual with ionones, ending up like a toffee tinted sun tan lotion that’s lathed RED into the perfume suggesting glistening flesh. RED is certainly confident about the mode of its allure: the latter hints of nuts and chocolate putting a freshly baked spin on this plethora of new vanilla perfumes that are regularly hitting the market. But it’s the unique, almost citrus, fresh aspect that might be RED’s most interesting twist.

In the accompanying video released ahead of the launch, Le Paih-Guérin refers lovingly to a “mango note” called ‘mandora’ – which a cursory search reveals to be a fruit that is a cross between a mandarin and an orange. In RED’s opening this citric fruit note is bright and vivid – a little like a white mandarin essence and a little like clementine – and when combined with the sparkle of bergamot and the floral heart of jasmine, ylang and Tiare flower creates what I’ve long dubbed ‘the florist accord’. You know that big blast of headiness you get upon first entering a florist? That punchy smell that rushes you, loaded with the odours of freshly cut stems, green dewy freshness and floral density? That’s the florist accord.

It’s a unique idea to blend together the scent of your local independent flower shop and a wanton flash of glamorous vanilla scented skin but RED makes it work and it’s really rather bold. There’s flashes of the lemon madeleine accord of Beaufort’s Lignum Vitae in RED’s use of nutty pyrazines and the other spicy odorants; and there’s a little bit of the power flowers of Ormonde Jayne’s Nawab of Oudh Intensivo in the heart, but RED is very much its own. The balance of the sandalwood, those sultry, dry iris facets and the sugar RED/caramel tones is modern and memorable. When you smell it, you can fully understand why Francois followed his nose into whatever darkened corner or nightclub booth he needed to figure out precisely where that moreish trail was coming from.

Notes: bergamot, mandarin, pink pepper, clementine, coconut, cardamom, jasmine, tiare flower, mugwort, hazelnut, fig, iris, nutmeg, ylang-ylang, clove, frangipani, sandalwood, caramel, wood, musk.

  • I have heard so much about Sora Dora. Haven’t tried their perfumes. I like how Oli (welcome)says RED is different from all the vanillas and the florist accord sounds interesting with the caramel. Thanks for explaining Mandora too.One day I would love to go to Jovoy

I LOVE Sora Dora, especially Mandorle. I would love to try Red, especially for the combination of nutty, citrus notes and mentioned “florist accord.” Sounds like a beauty. I am in CA, USA.

  • Been very curious about this one! I’ve heard many good things from this house like Jany Mallow, Mandorle, etc. Very interested to try them including their new release Red! From USA

  • Oli Marlow’s review of Sora Dora RED x Jovoy Paris beautifully captured the vibrant collaboration between Quentin Dorado and François Henin. The description of the perfume’s gourmand notes, like brown sugar and hazelnut, combined with the unique mandora fruit, makes RED sound truly captivating. The “florist accord” imagery evoked the sensation of stepping into a lush flower shop, adding depth to the scent profile. I’m particularly intrigued by the bold blend of glamorous vanilla and citrus notes, which sounds both modern and memorable. My interest is piqued by this innovative fragrance’s sensory journey.

    I live in Nashville, Tennessee.

  • I love how this seems to be a mix of different styles, a bit gourmond, a bit floral, on a sandlewood bass. Sound delicious and it’s great to hear the backstory on development. I live in the US

  • The fresh “almost-citrus” aspect of Sora Dora RED x Jovoy Paris is an interesting spin on the baked-dessert vanilla gourmand. The “florist accord” Oli described really puts a picture to the sparkling mandora note, and it’s a surprising composition that would start with that punchy combination of freshly cut stems, green dewy freshness and floral density” and segue into vanilla-scented skin and nutty spiced confections. Intriguing.

I’m in the USA. Welcome Oli!

I love how this fragrance got started. The notes of fig and hazelnut interest me, I’ve heard good things about this. Hopefully it will be more widely available. Thanks for the chance to get a sniff. USA

  • Ooh this sounds sublime! Anytime a perfume has this many layers and puzzle pieces moving together to form new aspects I know I’m going to like it. Especially when it’s using cardamon, fig, clove, clementine, “dry Iris”, mugwort, nutmeg… and all the beautiful florals and woods… it’s going to be singing a complex song and I will love it, I just know. I am in USA thank you for the chance to win a sample!

Thanks for the nice writeup Oli!

I love the florist accord, that you alluded to. It’s something that I actively seek out while entering any gardening store.

The mandora note in this scent is fascinating. It sounds like an accord, rather than an EO. The overall concept of a vanillic gourmand floral sounds quite contemporary and I can see how this would attract attention, even in the cornermost points of a nightclub.
