Solstice Scents Southern Veranda captures the essence of a specific time and place. Artisan perfumer Angela St. John is known for her unique ability to do just that and she brings to life the charm of the southern veranda.

Thomas Durand Visser calls porches “Transitional realms that straddle thresholds between indoors and out, between private and public and even between sacred and secular.” I once read somewhere that all verandas are porches, but all porches are not verandas.

As night falls on the veranda down South, the air fills with the scents of the evening: the sweet smells of blossoming flowers and mown grass. The earth’s essence blends harmoniously, giving rise to a melodic medley of fragrances are carried by the gentle breeze. The scent of magnolias with its a citrus facet and a hint of natural greenness contrasts with  sweet floral notes. Antique roses blended with sparkleberry flowers and a touch of lemon create a zesty and refreshing aroma that hangs in the air like a comforting embrace enveloping you. The rich fragrance travels through your senses, transporting you to a serene and calm environment.

Entwined within Solstice Scents Southern Veranda are the earthly smells of dusk setting in. The lush and moist aroma of the earth following a summer shower hangs gently in the air around you like an anchor to the now. In that instant, everything changes. The crisp, zesty woody trees bring a hint of renewed vitality, rejuvenating your senses within the medley of fragrance. In addition, amber hits my nose with a hint of sugar, creating an enchanting aroma with a touch of caramelized sweetness and an undertone anchoring it all together. These elements combined result in a sophisticated yet delicately sweet, complex, and nuanced perfume.

Amidst the array of scents that envelop me, there’s an animated exchange of conversations and tales amongst friends that take on a charm as the soft pastel hues of the night sky set in. The evening’s aromas further enhance this moment, turning it into a journey that genuinely heightens the magic of the night. I savor it all with Solstice Scents Southern Veranda, as it transports me to a charming moment of relaxation. Every second fills me with gratitude for the beauty around me and a profound love for life’s pleasures that bring joy. The southern veranda is more than a physical location; it embodies a mindset. A sanctuary of tranquility and balance that stays with me, as does the perfume. Inhale, breathe and relax.

  • My goodness that gorgeous Italian inlay and carved tea cart table! I got totally distracted! But really verandas and porches are that inbetween place. Like dusk and dawn or a crossroads. A threshold. It’s a meaningful part of any home just like the hearth and kitchen. And the family photos. I love the haint blue of the southern ones. This fragrance sounds perfect, some magnolia and tea and soil and a bit of sugar. Mystery, beauty and melancholy!! I am in California. Thank you for the giveaway.

  • I am in the US. Magnolia, a flower forever associated with the South in my mind, is such an interesting note in perfumery. Very curious to explore it

  • Big fan of Angela‘s, so I read this with relish. It’s not one I’ve had a chance to try yet. Her fragrances are absolute experiences. Sandi has given a beautiful description.

My childhood house in southern MO had a porch swing with a garden below, so anything that could bring me back to those summer days swinging on the porch while smelling a flower garden? Yes, please!

  • So happy to see Angela and her work being immortalized in text. Each and every one of her scents is truly an “experience.” Angela had posted this article on her IG story and I am so happy to have found this blog through her to make new scent discoveries. This is a scent I didn’t know I needed in my life but now I know I do!!

Sandi’s beautiful words reminded me of my grandma’s porch in Kerrville, Texas. Growing up, we children had the run of this area and played with our dolls and crafts there all day. Tea parties were involved. We spent the most time there at Christmas as summers got pretty hot out on the porch, so oddly enough Sandi’s description evokes December for me! There were often a few roses still blooming, and on Texas back then, the tea was ALWAYS iced no matter the season. Thanks for the beautiful memories. Solstice Scents is my favorite perfume house ever!

  • As someone from Florida, the smell of warm grass and magnolias are very nostalgic to me. I’ve bought a few perfume oils from Solstice Scents before and have never been disappointed in what they have to offer.

I love the transition from inside to outside. The veranda is really a transitory place, as is the fall season creeping on us. As someone who grew up in the south, the magnolia scent is such a hallmark to the outdoors. I remember one we had in our backyard growing up, and I would dance and play around it.

  • I’ve read about Solstice Scents here on ÇaFleureBon a few times, but I haven’t had the chance to try St. John’s work yet. I’m drawn to fragrances inspired by a specific place, and I appreciate that Southern Veranda seems to not just capture cold tea on a charming porch, but also a sense of evening breeze and post-rain haze clinging to the lawn, plus a sugary amber to provide some progression. This reminds me of a vacation to rural Tenesee; I’m remembering the smell at the end of the day, sitting out on the little cabin’s back deck. Lovely.

    I’m in the USA.

This review reminds me of attending a tea party in the late summer on a veranda facing a lush garden. I taste the tea and lemon cake, breathing in the scent of late blooming roses and magnolia. Drawn by the sky, I sneak away from the party to explore a trail I spotted in the woods nearby. It’s hard for me to resist a path of desire. As I walk, I savor the deep, ancient scent of trees with moss hanging from every crevice. The sun twinkles at me as I watch it make its way below the horizon.

I am a big fan of Angela St. John and Solstice Scents. My favorites are Wilcox’s, Desert Thunderstorm, and High Desert. When you wear a Solstice Scents fragrance, you WILL be transported. I loved Sandi’s review of Southern Veranda. I grew up in North Carolina and my childhood home had a porch. I will never forget the gentle breezes bringing the smell of magnolias to the porch-swung evenings. I love that there is a sun-warmed grass note in this fragrance.
    I live in the USA.
