Before I found it, I never considered that a perfume could smell like hunter velvet. Before I tried it, I never imagined a fragrance that could seem a secret only the bottle and I were privy to. Before I wore it, I never dreamed that a perfume could make me feel like a class act. Before I lived with Soivohle Green Oakmoss, I never realized how the colour green could materialize in the air around me every time I sprayed it on my wrists.

Soivohle Green Oakmoss, one of perfumer and artist Liz Zorn’s best sellers, is one of my very favourite perfumes, so much so that I own two bottles just in case Zorn ever stops making it. It was created in 2008 as a tongue-in-cheek pushback to the fragrance world fluster over IFRA’s ban of real oakmoss as a perfume ingredient. As Zorn relates, “There was a lot of buzz back then about regulations restricting oakmoss in perfume. I created a custom oakmoss accord for this using no real oakmoss, then called it Green Oakmoss.

Soivohle Green Oakmoss is a timeless beauty built on contrasts of sharp, rich and animalic, with more shades of green than Kermit’s extended family. Constructed on the classic chypre structure of bergamot, oakmoss, labdanum and patchouli, Zorn then imbues the fragrance with a spectrum of greens that I have found in no other scent. Look at the green apples of Cezanne’s painting of the same name and you will see that the colour of the fruit is made up of myriad shades, ranging from chartreuse to forest. The notes of Green Oakmoss contain similar gradations: seaweed, cut grass, vetiver, mint, pine needle, and, of course, an oakmoss accord. The effect of these disparate green notes gives Green Oakmoss much of its depth and character.

Sporting this gorgeous creature somehow always makes me feel classy, in a retro-modern way, Soivohle Green Oakmoss bursts open with a Lauren Bacall head-thrown-back, throaty laugh of bergamot, spicy clove, and handfuls of mown grass. This trio of notes ping each other like a pinball; bright, sparkly bergamot bouncing off the slightly smoky, off-sweet woodiness of clove and verdant, springy grass. A saline note filters in, which is likely seaweed, adding another contrasting sensation. As it develops, the other notes begin to make way for oakmoss accord like subjects parting for their queen. It does indeed smell like there is a generous handful of the forbidden lichen in Zorn’s fragrance; there are oakmoss’ woodsy, loamy facets and its velvety texture. It is rich, earthy, with just enough acerbic bite to seem like the real thing to my nose.

Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice 1946 publicity shot

As you reach the heart of  Soivohle Green Oakmoss, it would be easy to peg it as a 40s or 50s green chypre in the style of Balmain Jolie Madame. It is full-bodied, dimensional, with contrasting sharp and plush notes. Carnation swirls around the composition like spicy cream and geranium underlines the spice with its peppery velvet. Then it all starts to get a bit naughty, as animalic notes slink in with a distinct lash of leather and hints of transgression. Green Oakmoss gets sexy in a downlow sort of way, like those coutured and hatted highbrow dames of Noir cinema – think Mary Astor in the Maltese Falcon or Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Soivohle Green Oakmoss is perfect for office since its projection is present but never loud. It also glams up beautifully for a night at the opera or the ambassador’s residence.

My love of chypres can be traced to a change in epoch: before GO and after GO. Trust me, life after GO is richer and just plain better.

Notes: Bergamot, cut grass accord, mint, green oakmoss accord, cloves, seaweed absolute, rose geranium, tuberose accord, carnation accord, pine needle, civet (cruelty free) castoreum (cruelty free), hedione, aged patchouli, labdanum absolute, Haitian vetiver.

  • What amazes me about this is that it uses no oakmoss! I’d love to smell it to see how that works.

  • What a striking sounding scent. I love how you describe the varied nuanced greens. It sounds like a stunner for years to come. In maryland

  • I’m in love with all the green notes and descriptions. I’m a sucker for green fragrances, and the unique blend of scents is intriguing. Sounds promising!

  • I love both green-green-green scents and classic chypres, so this perfume, as Lauryn describes it, sounds beyond perfect. I haven’t smelled very many Soivohle perfumes, but I like Woodfire & Rain. I’m in New York.

This is also one of my many loves from this line. I adore Liz’s work for not being afraid to be completely unique and yet so gorgeous. Congratulations on 20 years! My favorite Soivohle fragrance is probably Harbinger but it is difficult to choose! US

  • I love both chypres and green scents, so this has long been fragrance I’ve wanted to try. And, though I’ve been aware of Soivohle for years, I’ve never tried any of Liz Zorn’s creations. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • I had an opportunity to visit Liz’s studio some years ago. I have many favorites….Rosa Sur Reuse, Harbinger, Rivertown Road…..Anubis is another favorite. This review has definitely sparked my interest in Green Oakmoss. It sounds classic but with an interesting twist. I’m in Missouri.

  • Yes I’m a fan of this one as I’ve sampled it and even though it’s been a while I recall it vividly. Very much enjoyed reading the reviewer’s personal take on GO. US

I love the sound of this, especially a full-throated Lauren Bacall laugh of bergamot. What a lovely description! I also love the allusions to the Balmain. The green and spicy and aromatic notes all sound super appealing. I am a huge fan of chypres/greens. Way back at the start of my niche/indie journey, I tried many Soivhole scents. Oudh Lacquer, Vanillaville and then I think it was called “bottleneck blues” were tops of my list! Thanks for the generous draw. I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • I like how Lauryn uses the painting to describe all the faucets of this green fragrance. I have not sampled any fragrances from this house.

  • I used to hate green fragrances, but have come to love them. I am right now in a total GREEN phase. Soivohle Green Oakmoss sounds like something I need. Unfortunatley, I’ve yet to try a Soivohle perfume. Perhaps this sale will change that. I am in the US.

  • The notes combination sounds unique and it has notes I have not experienced before in my fragrance. Rich, earthy…complex with animalic notes…
I don’t have a favorite soivohle perfume yet because I am new to the house. I am getting used to chypre but looking to try more chypre.

  • The spectrum of green scents Lauryn describes in Soivohle Green Oakmoss is intriguing. I love green scents and the list of notes in Soivohle Green Oakmoss is lovely. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, so no favorites. Appreciate the draw and review. From USA.

  • I love Chypre/green fragrances. I have a vintage 4711 and it’s very refreshing. Fresh cut grass and vetiver are right up my alley too. I’ve had Balmain’s Jolie Madame many years back and loved it. I read somewhere Oakmoss was banned or something. Well, thanks so much for the chance to win. U.S.

This sounds like the green of my dreams!! I got into greens more recently and have sampled quite a few even being disappointed by a fragrance with the word “viper” in it, I expected more green from that one. I want to experience every spectrum of green. I’m going straight away to the website as I am not familiar with this line. Thanks for the 20% off!! USA.

I love green fragrances particularly in spring. Soivohle Green Oakmoss sounds like a multi-dimensional modern take on a classic chypre. Unfortunately, I’ve never tried any Soivohle fragrances before. MD, USA

  • Thanks Lauryn for a wonderful review. It brought back memories of the only fragrance I wore that had an oakmoss note in it (Bvlgari Pour Homme) but from the sound of it, Liz Zorn’s version must be much better than what I wore since mine was not particularly striking. I’m in USA

  • Lovely tribute by Lauryn of one of her favourites perfumes. I’m such a fan of green fragrances and particularly great green Chypres. It’s since I smelled Eau de Soir on my mother when I was a child, I love beautiful oakmossy fragrances. I never heard of Soivohle before but will definitely check this House out. Always appreciate Çafleurebon for highlighting these independent perfumers. Marit UK (I have family in the US if that counts for the draw;))

  • I am a huge fan of oakmoss! Soivohle Green Oakmoss sounds lovely with the green chypre. I love how Lauren evokes images of Mary Astor and Lana Turner when reviewing this perfume. I also really love bergamot, oakmoss, labdanum and patchouli.

    I live in California, USA.

  • Great article and review. Intrigued that this fragrance does not have oakmoss yet is called Green Oakmoss. Thanks for the Giveaway.love.c, CA,USA

  • I’ve only tried a few Soivohle fragrances, and I don’t know why Green Oakmoss wasn’t one of them. The entire concept of an oakmoss-less oakmoss fragrance is clever and snarky, and the the list of notes Lauryn describes—seaweed, cut grass, vetiver, mint, pine needle, oakmoss accord, clove, plus a chypre structure—sounds like a buzzing frenzy of green. I should seek this one out.

My go to Soivohle fragrance is Rivertown Road (fougère + bay rum is a startlingly effective combination) and I’ll try just about any green fragrance, which I find to be my ideal daily wear.

    Thanks for the great review!

Thanks for the great review Lauryn.

Liz Zorn is up there in my favourite perfumer list, ever since I smelt Oudh Laquer.

I’m really taken aback by the shades of green in this fragrance both from the review and in the notes list. I’m also awestruck that she created a perfume that has no oakmoss and is an ode to the the note.

I love chypres and green fragrances, probably my favorite genre.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Very nice review Lauryn! What strikes me about Soivohle Green Oakmoss based on Lauryn’s review is how multidimensional the green notes are – with as she said, more shades of green than Kermit’s extended family! Most green perfumes tend to rely on one or two green notes in full force – most commonly oakmoss and bergamot – and simply overdose them in concentration to get more greenness. But an almost fully green fragrance with so many different shades around the spectrum of green, losing none of the complexity for it’s green focus, is incredibly compelling and intriguing to me. I am exceedingly excited to try this one!

I do not yet have a favourite Soivohle perfume as I have not yet tried any but I am very much also a fan of chypres and green fragrances. My favourite green fragrance would have to be Papillion Dryad, another very complex green fragrance with layers upon layers of greenery, built around a deep floral heart and a perfectly animalic base. I live in the US.
