Shalini Paradis Provence Review (Maurice Roucel) + Healing Light Draw

Shalini Paradis Provence review

We promised ourselves that one day we would live here. We had talked about it during the long gray winters and the damp green summers, looked with an addict’s longing at photographs of village markets and vineyards, dreamed of being woken up by the sun slanting through the bedroom window.” (Peter Mayle, “A Year in Provence”)

Maurice Roucel perfumes 2019

Shalini Kumar of Shalini Parfum & Maurice Roucel of Symrise

When I met Shalini Kumar (N.Y.-based fashion designer, and owner/creative director of Shalini Parfum) a few months ago in Paris, she shared with me that her next perfume would be an olfactory celebration of her deep love for the South of France. Having been born and raised in the Mediterranean, I am always touched to meet people from all over the world that have developed such an existential connection with that blessed Basin. Since that conversation, Shalini Paradis Provence has been for me one of the most anticipated releases of the year. My expectations were met with a soul-cleansing fragrance of touching purity, centered around thyme and lavender, composed by Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel (making this his fourth collaboration with Shalini).

For hundreds of years now, Provence has been seducing artists and visitors with its transcendent light and its art de vivre, as well as with its magical landscapes: the lavender and sunflower fields, the picturesque villages on top of ancient rock formations, the glorious meetings of the mountains and the sea… Shalini shared with me her special affection for the area: “My great love for Provence began on my very first visit to Luberon, with its old olive trees and fields of blue lavender. The colors and essences spoke to my soul, and I felt good in my skin being there. There is a clarity that I experience when I swim in the blue waters of the Mediterranean. I have continued to find my personal paradise in Provence each summer for the last twenty years, and have always felt deeply restored there. I also have two perfect little French god sons living in Cannes, who are a source of immense joy and love in my life”. As for Shalini Paradis Provence, she confessed: “This fragrance has been in my soul for many years. It is my way to be transported to Provence each day. Paradis Provence is meant to evoke the “golden light of thyme”. That is the solar, healing energy.”

Shalini also shared with me what perfume creation truly means to her: she regards her fragrances as olfactory expressions of her own personal journey to self-awareness and evolution, like scented entries in a diary. Viewed under this prism, her first fragrance, Shalini, was essentially about the metamorphosis of a girl into a woman, Jardin Nocturne about a young woman’s sexual awakening, while Amorem Rose was created out of the need for healing of the heart through deep, divine love. As for Paradis Provence, the essence of the fragrance is for Shalini a healing energy that echoes a love that’s timeless: “the kind that soulmates share beyond time or space barriers.”

Shalini Paradis Provence opens with a cool, aromatherapy-like lavender, that immediately invites the wearer to inhale deeply. Intense and complex, this top-quality lavender absolute is green, herbaceous and slightly woody. The thyme, spicy and phenolic, with almost leathery nuances, warms up the fragrance shyly but increasingly, like the first sunbeams on a dewy spring morning. Both belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae), lavender and thyme are among the most valuable of herbs, cherished for centuries for their healing properties, and they are the undeniable protagonists of Shalini Paradis Provence. It could be a result of their potent aromatic synergy, but I also detect hints of clary sage, violet, pine and moss in the composition. The delicate floralcy of orange blossom, with just a touch of jasmine, enters the scene, mellowing and sweetening the fragrance. An astonishing breezy effect runs through Shalini Paradis Provence (possibly aided by musk), in a manner of a gentle current of air that carries along the aromas of Provençal blooming fields, blending them all together. In its drydown the fragrance becomes more floral and mild, and slightly soapy. Overall, the evolution of Shalini Paradis Provence takes a rather therapeutic character: its intense, highly energizing opening awakens body and mind, moving then on slowly towards cleansing, relaxing and soothing the wearer.

The beautiful “Deux Fleurs” crystal flacon (designed by René Lalique in 1935) is the ideal carrier for a fragrance that’s built around dualities: more than being unisex, Shalini Paradis Provence merges the (pre)conceptions of “masculine” and “feminine” fragrance into oblivion; it also accomplishes a remarkable fusion of timeless aromatherapy and contemporary fine perfumery. Shalini Paradis Provence  takes the wearer even beyond the geographical location of its name: it evokes universally longed-for feelings of uncomplicated bliss, soul-soothing tranquility and profound reassurance. If your idea of “Paradise” is a place of peace, harmony and solace, then Shalini Paradis Provence could very well be its fragrance.

Notes: Thyme, Lavender, Orange Blossom, Jasmine.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank Shalini for my 7.5ml spray bottle of Shalini Paradis Provence. The opinions are my own.

Shalini’s perfumes reflect her own personal evolution over time. Paradis Provence is her tribute to the South of France that has long charmed people from all over the world. I have not tried any Shalini creation yet. I am in US.

  • Crisstyyn says:

I am absolutely sure that Paradis Provence smells amazing; there are all my favourite notes and they are all balm to the soul just like the Provencal experience. Great review. I have never tryed a Shalini fragrance and i will be more than happy to try this one. Thank you for the draw! Regards from UK

  • doveskylark says:

I felt like I was transported to Provence when I read Despina’s review. I have been searching for a healing, soothing lavender fragrance that brings bliss and harmony. I have a very, very old Yardley’s Lavender that I only use when I have a migraine or when I am especially flustered. Shalini’s Paradis Provence sounds like a wonderful alternative. I haven’t tried anything from Shalini.
    I live in the USA.

  • This fragrance sounds so soothing. Lavender is a wonderful aromatic. I would love to sniff this! Thanks for the opportunity. USA

  • jeremyn87 says:

I liked the way it so vividly described Southern France. I love the Mediterranean region and its bright and beautiful smells.
I havent tried anything from this house, but Roucel is a fragrance superstar.
Im in the US, in IL. Thanks for the draw

  • NiceVULady says:

Despina’s review reflects her own love of the Provence as well as Shalini’s. This sounds like a truly beautiful and restful scent. I don’t have any fragrances from Shalini, but Paradis Provence would be a wonderful place to start. Thanks for the lovely review and this great draw. I’m in the USA

  • My compliments to Despina for a poetic and spot-on review of Paradis Provence. I suspect she somehow has been reading my mind after wearing this stunning perfume for the past week. While I love the scent of lavender when you brush against it in the garden, this is the first time I have liked lavender as the main focus in a perfume. It truly is a solar experience…

  • I would love to try Shalini Paradis Provence, I have never tried any perfume Shalini, they are expensive. I like France and I visited southern cities like Avignon, Montpellier and Grasse. I love the perfume of lavender in Bucolique de Provence by L’Artisan Parfumeur, Jersey extract by Chanel, Mem by Bogue Profumo, I do not like Fourreau noir by Serge lutens too much tonka bean for me. I love the smell of thyme in my kitchen but I have never worn a perfume with thyme! I like the work of Maurice Roucel: Dans tes bras for Frederic Malle is so sensual, Helmut Lang eau de parfum looks like a little. I live in France.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I lived Despina’s description of the genderless dualities of this scent! I also loved how herbaceous this sounds. I’m not familiar with this line at all. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • As I read the review, I could just smell the lavender, thyme, and jasmine that make up this creation. The photos are absolutely stunning and are a perfect complement to the beautiful words used to describe the fragrance. I also love the Lalique flacon. I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • I live in France and Provence is definitely the most drool worthy part of the country( especially for the Parisian that I am…) Lavender, thym… and composed by Mr Musc Ravageur- Maurice Roucel himself!!! It’s a perfume lover’s dream come true! Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity of smelling Shalini’s other perfumes( I heard Jovoy hass them now- yay!!)… Despina wove a tale of wonderful Provençalolfactory love story that makes me even more impatient to discover Paradis Provence…. Thank you for this generous draw!!

  • Waldo favorite says:

Could reading Despina be the best possible substitute to an actual experience of this perfume? I tend to think so. Once again, her singularly poetic/sensorial approach opens a rich array of sensations. (II do not wish to enter the competition…)

  • Thank you Despina for this wholesome review and to Shalina for the generous giveaway. I read Michelyn’s introduction at the beginning of the month and this sure sounds like a lovely and complex fragrance. That flacon is also a piece of art 🙂 I’m yet to try any of Shalini’s fragrances but they sound lovely, I’m in TX USA

  • Greatly enjoyed the descriptive paragraph below the “Plateau de Albion Lavender” painting. I haven’t tried a fragrance from this house yet. US

  • Perfume as peace, harmony and solace by Maurice Roucel with lavender and thyme sounds so appealing. Despina write so beautifully. I did have a chance to sample Amorem rose but this sounds more for me especially as a guy
    I live in the US

  • What a gorgeous perfume. I would love to smell a true lavender. More often than not, lavender can turn a bit harsh and synthetic in perfumes. I am sure the quality of this house would not allow that. I do not have a favorite Shalini perfume though, for I never tried them. I live in the EU

  • I have never had a chance to try anything from Shalini. But I wold very like to try Shalini Paradis Provence, because it sounds wonderful from the base of the notes and the review. Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • So beautiful review with nice illustrations.
I like lavender in perfumery but not sure same about thyme. I like Roucel creations very much- great perfumer, but never have chance to test Shalini perfumes.
This perfume sounds interesting and wearable for man.

I love this, those important phases of a woman’s life recorded in an olfactory story. Paradis Provence is the best part in my opinion, I would love to try this, thank you for the draw. Live in the US.

  • Summertime driving through the Provence seeing nothing but Lavender and Sunflowers. Lovely review. No favorites. Living in the EU.

  • I loved Shalini’s reflections on Provence and it’s soothing effect on the soul. Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to try a fragrance by Shalini. This one sounds so beautiful! I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • samppahoo says:

I like that this fragrance is described as soul cleansing. I appreciate it a lot when a perfume goes past its pleasant olfactive dimension and actually gives something for the soul, and it seems like this one does that. I will be happy to try this from Finland. I have never tried Shalini before.

  • I love Provence, and lavender reminds me of my time there. I have not tried any shalini perfumes, but on site I would love this one as I love all the notes. Thank you for the lovely review and the chance to try this scent!

  • Dubaiscents says:

I loved the review, especially when Despina described each scent in the line and said about this one, “…the essence of the fragrance is for Shalini a healing energy that echoes a love that’s timeless: “the kind that soulmates share beyond time or space barriers.”” And I really liked the artwork you chose to go with the review. I was finally able to smell the earlier work at Aedes and was very impressed with the quality and clear love of perfume that Ms. Kumar clearly has. Thanks for the opportunity. I live in the US.

  • scentifolia says:

Thank you Despina for this poetic review ! I live in the South of France, not far from Provence: it is indeed a wonderful place to relax and watch the world pass-by. Paradis Provence sounds really modern and unique, I love the idea of imagining a fragrance as a fusion of aromatherapy and fine perfumery. I have never tried anything from Shalini Parfum yet, I am pretty certain the three fragrances are equally amazing.

  • It‘s wonderful to know Shalini is bringing outa new fragrance. I own Shalini by Shalini and it‘s an another level floral. I learned to love Shalini through it and I am happy to read more about Shalini herself in the review as well as her motivation and inspiration behind the wonderful fragrances.
    I live in Germany.

  • Thanks for another great review, Dana! This part of your description is what I liked most- ‘it evokes universally longed-for feelings of uncomplicated bliss, soul-soothing tranquility and profound reassurance’. I haven’t sampled any Shalani yet and I hope to win. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • I love that this is a unisex fragrance in all of its majestically subtle and powerful description. Any fragrance that has a capability of taking me to a different region of the world through olfactory sensation ought to be a part of my collection. (Commenting from USA.)

  • I identify with your love of Provence. I vacationed there last year, and my thoughts were “why wasn’t I born here?”. I felt so at home in this lovely fragrant land. This perfume sounds so lovely with notes of lavender and orange blossom. I love lavender and it doesn’t get featured so much in perfume. I have never tried a fragrance by Shalini. I am in the USA

  • The contrast of the cool lavender being warmed by the thyme was beautifully described by Despina. I’ve never tried this house but that Deux Fleurs flacon is gorgeous! I’m in the US

  • I enjoyed reading this review and I particularly liked the precise description of the floral elements. I have not tried any Shalini fragrance yet. I live in Romania.

  • wildevoodoo says:

I didn’t know that lavender and thyme both belong to the Lamiaceae/mint family! It’s so nice to hear of others whose hearts have been touched by that amazing region of France. I’ve spent a couple months in Provençe and the most time in the Luberon region, and it’s an incredibly soothing place. Life tends to move more slowly and languidly, and the food is absolutely incredible! The Abbaye de Sénanque pictured here is a great place to visit, and the market in nearby Gordes has some of the best spices (and fresh black truffles!) I’ve ever purchased. If you have the means to visit and have not yet done so, I encourage you to go! If you have already visited, go again 🙂

I haven’t tried any perfumes from Shalini yet but would be thrilled to try this creation honoring one of my favorite places in the world. I am in the US 🙂

  • BlessedTA says:

Great review. I like the description of the fragrance. I am not familiar with the brand. I’m in Canada. Thank you.

  • “An astonishing breezy effect”, ” its intense, highly energizing opening awakens body and mind”, and so other nice words and descriptions. Thank you for this beautiful article.

  • I absolutely love lavender and the notes and description of this sound beautiful. Thank you for the amazing review and the chance at the giveaway I have not yet tried anything from shalini parfum.

    I’m in the USA

  • Lisa F Collins says:

I haven’t tried anything by this house, yet. Despina’s description of the scent made me smell the lavender on the air…I love the line, “like the first sunbeams on a dewy spring morning.” Makes you feel like you can feel the sunshine on your skin. (USA)

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love lavender. It is such a comforting, clean scent to me. I have never been to the south of France but I can imagine the beautiful scent from the lavender fields. That crystal flacon is to die for so I can only imagine that the juice inside must be stunning. I’ve never tried any of Shalini’s fragrances but I’m intrigued by the inspiration behind each one and will have to find some samples. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • carlos_lager says:

Thank you for the great review. I loved the way you described the fragrance. It was very descriptive and I could nearly smell it in my head 🙂
I have not yet tried a fragrance by Shalini.
    Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • I don’t have a favorite Shalini fragrance.
I enjoyed the way Despina describes the notes in the fragrance. And also the evolution.
    I live in California.

  • I’ve been wanting to try Shalini Parfums. This one sounds beautiful and soothing. Would like to visit southern France one day. Thanks, US

  • I calmed down just by reading this article… I love lavender and thyme, but most importantly – the idea of healing trough finding yourself. I would like to participate in the draw and in case of winning present it to my mum, as her dream is to visit Provence and its lavender fields.
Thank you, I am in EU.

  • I’m always on the quest of a nice lavender scent, most of the time I find lavender perfumes smelling a bit dated. Great review for a new Roucel creation, he certainly knows how to give a luxurious, contemporary twist to lavender. I have never tried any perfume from Shalini. Cheers from Romania, thanks for the draw!

  • As I am madly in love about Provence and its lavender fields, I fully enjoyed Despina’s review about Shalini Paradis Provence. Since my teenage I was drawn to the healing energy of lavender, in aromatherapy and perfumery as well. I don’t know anything unfortunately about shalini perfumes. This is my first entry for Cafleurbon. I live in the EU, thank you.

  • I’ve never had the pleasure of trying any fragrances from Shalini. This one sounds so pure and natural. It really sounds so gorgeous.
    I live in the US.

  • Beautiful fragrance by just the description that Despina’s describes in the review. Paradise Provence is a place of peace, solace and harmony…great wording. I have never tried any fragrance from Shalini but I would so love to try this peace of heaven on earth. I live in CA, USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • Excellent review by Despina! I love this tribute and this fragrance sounds exquisite! Provence has always been on my bucket list and this fragrance will take me there. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!
