The limited edition Spring 2019 Banq de Parfum Sarah Horowitz Parfums Violet Haze was created by Sarah Horowitz Thran in response to a recent Instagram poll. Sarah asked her followers for their favorite notes in perfumery.  Violet proved to be the most popular, followed closely by cut grass and gourmand. I have to say that violet is also one of my favorite notes in perfumery and in flavorings as well.  The humble violet is high on my list of most favored springtime flowers.

A violet by a mossy stone, half hidden from the eye…” – William Wordsworth

The tiny, delicate, blooms of garden violets brighten the soggy late days of April and early May here in the Pacific Northwest. The genus Violaceae includes hundreds of species, a couple of which are blooming in my garden right now:  The common (and edible) Wood Violet (Viola sororia) and the very similar Purple Labrador Violet, sporting deep green to blackish purple foliage topped with rich, dark blooms.  Stepping indoors, springtime and year round, I marvel at the sparkling colors of African Violets (Saintpaulia ionatha), different in almost every way from the two above mentioned garden violets, but with one obvious trait in common – all three are virtually scent free. Sadly the fragrant violets I crave don’t bloom in my garden. It is the tender English Violet  (Viola odorata), the flower of poetry, perfumery and garden lore, and her Mediterranean cousin the Parma Violet, that have, for over a century, contributed their tastes and smells to countless beloved candies and perfumes. In order to experience the scent of these delicate blooms I reach for a modern violet fragrance and for the ionones and methyl ionones that play hide and seek with the scent of the flowers.

This spring, until May 31, 2019, Sarah Horowitz Parfums Banq de Parfum is offering their limited edition exquisite rendition of fragrant violets.  Sarah Horowitz Parfums Violet Haze, my new favorite violet, is a delicate arrangement of purple spring flowers in bloom – a nosegay of sweet violets, iris and lilac, lifted with bergamot, freshened with cut grass and wrapped in a gauzen shawl of sandalwood, musk and white amber. “Violet Haze brings us into a totally shimmering, transportive experience of green purple fragrance…” – Sarah Horowitz-Thran

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Violet Haze opens like a cool morning mist. Impressions of wet, green violet leaves and buoyant bergamot color the vibrant spring air. In moments the sun rises and warms the earth, releasing the ethereal scents of delicate purple blooms suffused with hints of fresh grass and the richness of powdery orris.

The intricate, floral heart of Sarah Horowitz Violet Haze, recalls hand painted bouquets on fragile ceramics.  Delicate shades of pinks, purples and blues, garnished with hints of green, are set against a soft, translucent ivory bisque, glazed with a gourmand touch of tonka bean. The violet flowers and leaves, iris blossoms, orris and a hint of lilac create a multifaceted purple garland that caresses my skin (and pleasures my nose) for 8 hours and more.   Sarah Horowitz Parfums Violet Haze fades and finishes, snuggling into soft white amber, a sheer veil of sandalwood and an impression of diaphanous musk.

Notes:  Violet, lilac, fresh cut grass, orris, bergamot, tonka bean, sandalwood and white amber.

Disclaimer: Many thanks to Sarah Horowitz Parfums for the generous sample and my cherished bottle of the Banq de Parfum Violet Haze Eau de Parfum. My opinions are my own.

Happy Birthday! I love the edible elements of violets described in Gail’s article. I love violet sweets and would love a perfume to evoke that.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Interesting to hear that so many people requested violet. I do like it & haven’t thought of it as a “popular” note at all especially considering today’s crush of rose/oud and gourmands.
So I am excited to try this one! There is a violet-shaped hole in my wardrobe and this sounds gorgeous (esp considering cut grass is one of my favorite notes). Sounds perfect for spring and summer.
Happy birthday, Sarah! Hope it’s wonderul!

  • Dubaiscents says:

The scent of violets is one of the most divine and I would love to experience it combined with lilacs in this creation. I am also intrigued by its purple/green quality. I have heard of this line but haven’t had the pleasure of trying any of the fragrances. Happy birthday, Sarah! I live in the USA.

  • I love that Violet Haze opens like a cool morning mist. I also love the combination of violet and lilac in a bottle. This sounds like a nice fragrance for spring with all the notes in it.

Happy Birthday to Sarah! I would imagine that trying to get the sweetness correct of the violets would be a bit tricky. Finding that perfect violet scent would be difficult for just that reason. I’m surprised that it is such a popular floral note. Thanks for an interesting review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

Happy Bday Sarah.. Violet has cold, unreachable but somehow always the chic and timeless vibe for me. I would like to experience this beauty. I live in US.

  • fazalcheema says:

Happy birthday Sarah. Violet being the winner is a little surprising because i thought it is still the gourmand trend. Violet notes can be quite amazing when deployed skillfully. This seems like a transparent violet creation with musky end. Thanks for draw. I am in US
