Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Vanilla, DSH Perfumes Au Lait and Rosy and Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal + Indie Vanilla Fragrances Giveaway

Best Indie Vanilla Fragrances

3 Indie Vanilla Fragrances we love:  DSH Perfumes Au Lait, Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Vanilla and Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal,  Photo by Olya Bar.

The grand finale of the Vanilla series (see part one and two here) is all about celebrating indie vanilla fragrances—bold, artisanal creations that highlight vanilla in its raw, unfiltered glory. These are true olfactory works of art with clean, conscious compositions that put creativity and craft front and center. Some swear by indie perfumes, while others stick to the mainstream. For me, it all comes down to mood. There are days when I crave that intimate, close-to-the-skin scent—one that whispers instead of shouts, wrapping me in comfort and magic. Indie fragrances do just that—you can smell the perfumer’s intent as if it was created just for you.

Here are three indie vanilla fragrances that offer decadence, sensuality, and artistry.

SARAH HOROWITZ Parfums PERFECT VANILLA is one of the first indie vanilla fragrances

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Vanilla by Olya Bar

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Vanilla (Sarah Horowitz Thran) 1998 – At first spritz, the blood orange shines, offering a vibrant, almost tart brightness that immediately captures the essence of a sun-soaked day. The citrus is perfectly balanced by the vanilla, which is rich yet not overpowering—more akin to a freshly churned ice cream, delicately sweet and smooth. Then comes the savory part of what smells like toasted almonds, their nutty, slightly roasted flavor cuts through the sweetness and adds a subtle crunch that elevates it from a simple treat to something that feels truly crafted. The flavors are layered with precision in Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Vanilla—the tangy citrus, the creamy vanilla, and the warm, amber finish all coming together like an artisanal take on the light and airy creamsicle, one that will leave you savoring each bite, long after the summer sun sets.

Notes: Blood Orange, Tobacco, Amber, Vanilla.

DSH Perfumes Au Lait is one of the best indie vanilla fragrances
DSH Perfumes Au Lait Photo by Olya Bar

DSH Perfumes Au Lait (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) 2004- In a social media world suddenly obsessed with all things milk, Au Lait slides in effortlessly and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz composed it 20 years ago, so ahead of her time! Think of it as the frothy milk of the fragrance world—light, and airy just before you pour it into your latte. Milk and vanilla swirl together in a simple yet dreamy blend, with a hint of something angelic. There’s a dash of baby powder that triggers a hit of nostalgia for me, like the sweet scent of a baby’s head or those blankets that spark an oxytocin rush. It’s soft, it’s familiar, and it’s got that addictive, feel-good vibe.

Notes include: Warm Milk. Sweet Cream, Ambrette Seed, Buttercream Accord, Tonka Bean, French Vanilla

VANILLA RUM ROYAL by Rosy & Earnest

Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal by Olya Bar

Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal (Nathalie Feisthauer) 2024 – A vanilla scent with a splash of white wine? Now that’s something you don’t smell every day. Vanilla Rum Royal kicks things off with a zesty pop of bergamot and the sharp tang of aged white wine, straight from an oak barrel. It’s got that rum-like vibe that makes your mouth water, like you can taste the tannins swirling on your tongue with every inhale. Buttery soft, it feels like a full-bodied Chardonnay with a decadent mix of vanilla and musk at its core. This is no sweet vanilla—it is bone-dry, with a silky smooth sillage and a rich, warm projection that lingers. And as a clean brand, Rosy & Earnest received their EWG Verified certification—only the second brand in the Eau de Parfum category to achieve it (and the only Canadian!). Now that’s a game-changer.

Notes: Bergamot, Pink Pepper, White Wine, Wine Lees; Rum; Oak, Vanilla, Labdanum, Musk.

Disclosure: Olya received bottles of each of the three indie vanilla fragrances. Michelyn was gifted Vanilla Rum Royal, has her original bottle of Sarah Horowitz Perfect Vanilla from 2005 and a sample of Au Lait from 2012. Opinions are solely Olya’s

  • My favorite takeaway from the review was celebrating the mood of the Vanilla note and what it imparts to the wearer. DSH Perfumes Au Lait review was the one that stood out for me; the frothy, latte-like quality of Milk and vanilla mixed together that is angelic but also has an addictive essence. Sounds heavenly. Perfect Vanilla is also a standout,..That three scents were crafted by women is amazing, too.

Women-owned brands and women perfumers are truly changing the industry. Not only are they producing industry-changing/challenging fragrances but also thinking outside the box and coming with outstanding concepts. Sarah Horowitz is your citrusy/vanilla fragrance and the freshest of the 3 from the list. DSH Perfumes Au Lait is a milky vanilla fragrance and truly ahead of its time as it was created almost 2 decades ago. Finally Vanilla Rum Royal is a vanilla mixed with rum and coming from a brand that has 100% clean ingredients, suited for everyone and all skin types. If I were to win, Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal is the one I’m hoping to receive and I’m located in the USA.

  • I loved this series! And I loved the highlighting of women owned brands. It’s amazing what perfumes have been made by women, I find myself loving theirs above others. DSH, TRNP, Papillon, April Aromatics, St. Clair etc… I have not yet tried Rosy and Ernest so I’d love to try for Vanilla Rum Royal. I am located in California.

  • Shout out to Michelyn for making note that all three of these fragrances are crafted by women. Something not to be overlooked…

I’m a lover of niche and have thoroughly enjoyed this vanilla series as it’s aligning with my own current hunt for my perfect vanilla. The fact that Rosy & Earnest have intended to flip it on its head in a dry woody manner is even more enticing. I can’t begin to actually fathom what Vanilla Rum Royal smells like but color me curious for anything “bone-dry and silky smooth”

Can’t wait to sniff Vanilla Rum Royal!

  • So interesting to learn about vanilla being used in such a wide range of scents! I’m especially interested in Vanilla Rum Royal because of the uncommon note pairings and the use of vanilla without an explicitly sweet element. Thanks for sharing!

    Great review from Olya!
My choice if I win is Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal, it sounds fairly unique to me, especially as someone who has never smelled a perfume with a wine note. I do like that Olya dove into how the vanilla comes across, I find that is one note that can be surprisingly unique in how it comes across and is often overlooked by reviewers. Good luck all and greetings from Ontario, Canada!

  • It’s always good to read a concise but descriptive review and this one is crisp and detailed with easy to see imagery and a clear line of the fragrances’ paths. So clear that it’s easy to say I would choose The Vanilla Rum Royal if I were to be picked. I am ready for Autumn, so the summer ice cream of Perfect Vanilla isn’t my mood these days, and I’m not a fan of milk centric fragrances, while I AM a fan of vanilla and booze. Easy choice! I live in the US.

  • After reading Olya’s review, Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal really piqued my interest. The combination of vanilla with a splash of white wine and rum sounds so unexpected and exciting. It promises a bone-dry vanilla with a rich, smooth sillage that blends warm oak and musk, which feels both luxurious and intriguing. The uniqueness of incorporating aged white wine with vanilla, plus the fact that it’s EWG certified for clean ingredients, makes it a standout choice that I’d love to experience.

  • Perfect time of year for vanilla. Au Lait made me think of snuggling a sleeping baby sipping a cup of creamy coffee. You can’t go wrong with a creamsicle. If I’m the lucky winner, I would love Vanilla Rum Royal. The dry vanilla is appealing to me, my nose is changing and I’m not as much into vanilla that is too goody. That wine note is interesting and a clean brand is always a good choice. Thanks for the chance. USA.

All 3 sound like they are great gourmand fragrances but the one I would go for would be Vanilla Rum Royal.

In The Perfect Vanilla, the combo of tangy Citrus & creamy Vanilla doesn’t draw me in. The dash of baby powder in DSH Perfumes Au Lait doesn’t really intrigue me. Now Vanilla with a splash of White Wine caught my attention. That’s something I would like to get my nose on.

  • Olya’s reviews really brought these fragrances to life for me. I love how she dives into the nuances of each scent, making them feel so personal and intimate. Her description of Vanilla Rum Royal stood out the most—who would have thought of vanilla mixed with white wine? It sounds so unexpected, yet the way she paints it as this rich, dry vanilla with the tang of bergamot and wine is totally intriguing. It’s not your typical sweet vanilla, but something more sophisticated and layered. Olya’s writing made me imagine how warm and comforting it would feel to wear—like a full-bodied, luxurious experience in a bottle
So my choice would be Vanilla Rum Royal

I do love learning more about where a fragrance comes from, and the inspirations behind them. Thanks to this review, I am adding DSH’s Au Lait to my need to try now list. I can’t believe this is the first I’m hearing of it, considering my tastes. If I were to win, I’d choose Perfect Vanilla, such a beautiful scent – that has been added to my list when I first started exploring fragrance. I live in Oregon.

I loved the review of Vanilla Rum Royal! Reading it, I felt like I was in a tasting room in the Santa Cruz mountains, wrapped in an ivory colored sweater wrap, sipping on wine, smelling oak barrels and wearing a vanilla fragrance. I would love to be considered for winning this bottle! I’m in Austin TX.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

All three of these creations would be a great addition in my fragrance closet. Each has something that I find quite appealing.
Whether it be the lactonic touch in DSH Parfums Au Lait or the touch of white wine in Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal…but for me, the most alluring characteristic would have to be the sweet and savoriness of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfect Vanilla. It sounds just perfect to me 🙂

I have never tried the Rosy & Earnest brand, but this Vanilla Rum Royal sounds exquisite! It took me something time to realize that I do love gourmand fragrances, just not ones that are overly cloying in their sweetness. Vanilla Rum Royal by Rosy & Earnest sounds like a lovely nuanced and dry Vanilla. I would love to try Vanilla Rum Royal. Thank you for all these fun articles, cafleurbon! From Portland, USA.

  • I enjoyed Olya’s comparison of 3 vanilla scents that actually sounds very different. I want to have some warm milk and vanilla, not even any chocolate! I would love to experience Vanilla Rum royal, which sounds so yummy. Thank you for the draw and the wonderful review. I’m in the us

  • Vanilla is such a ubiquitous fragrance note but it’s somewhat rare to find a vanilla centric scent that is sophisticated and complex. Olya chose three vanilla fragrances for adults. I’m more drawn to Rosy & Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal because the vanilla is not sweet, and the white wine note sounds really interesting. MD, USA.

  • Vanilla Rum Royal composed by the famous Nathalie Feisthauer is for me (please). I bought a sample from indigo perfumery and it’s to my nose sweeter and not dry the way Olya describes. Rosy & Earnest is a new favorite. I would love to win a bottle of it! Great that all the indie vanillas are from women-run companies.

  • I read the 3 reviews and from all of those the one that talked to me the most it was DSH Perfumes Au Lait, and I’m totally intrigued. I love sweet colognes, and this one sounds amazing. With notes like warm milk, sweet cream, and buttercream accord, it seems so yummy, gourdmad.I’m all for that dreamy blend of milk and vanilla, plus the touch of baby powder is a great sweet detail. It sounds like it has that addictive factor that I adore in colognes. Fingers crossed for the giveaway, I live in the USA.

Hi there, I LOVED reading about three fragrances developed by women! I am always investigating new(to me) citrus/vanilla blends, and so reading about SHP Perfect Vanilla really struck a chord with me. Even though summer is over, the creamsicle nature of this blend is bound to be a hit in my household, should I win. Finding it also interesting that this is the oldest blend of the three fragrances, so looking forward to seeing how it matches up with the late 90’s vibe 🙂 I live in NYC/USA. Thank you!!!

  • All three of these gourmand vanillas sound easy to enjoy. Horowitz’s take wisely makes the orange and vanilla combination a “light and airy creamsicle”—good for such a desert-like combination. DSH Au Lait sounds a little powdery for my tastes, but the lactonic texture sounds comforting. Most interesting to me is the boozy Rosy & Earnest vanilla—”bone-dry” with that unusual combination of bright bergamot, oaky vanilla, and musk. That sounds refreshing and attention-grabbing.

I’m in the USA. If I were to win, I’d choose the Rosy and Earnest Vanilla Rum Royal.

  • KrystalNicole says:

Olya’s reviews really bring the fragrances to life for me and help me get a idea of if i will enjoy a scent. I love how she is very detailed in her description and the little nuances of a scent. The description of Vanilla Rum Royal really drawed my attention most because it sounds unique i am a vanilla lover and i have never heard of it paired with white wine. I like “grown up” vanilla and a dry not your typical sweet vanilla sounds right up my alley. If i am a lucky winner my choice would be Vanilla Rum Royal. thanks for the draw! I am in the USA, North Carolina

  • Vanilla, can’t resist! I love that all three of these explore different personalities of vanilla. It’s definitely one of my favorite notes and I do think there’s a different vanilla based fragrance for each mood and season. I hadn’t heard of any of these before so I do appreciate this review giving us a nice concise summary and an idea of what to try next. My preference would be for the Perfect Vanilla. I love in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!
