This year, for reasons I didn’t quite expect, has turned into my personal Year of Whiskey. And no, it’s not because I’ve suddenly developed a newfound love for the drink itself. Since quitting smoking, bourbon just doesn’t feel complete without its old, familiar complementary vice. I remain an occasional, social sipper of a robust, dry red wine, my palate having long forgotten the subtle complexities of whiskey’s divine character.

Thankfully, fragrances have kept the flame alive. Deep, warm, and endlessly complex, whiskey-inspired scents continue to capture its essence, offering layers of depth reminiscent of the drink itself. From cozy, sweet nuances to smoky, dangerous undertones, these fragrances embody the deeply gratifying warmth and richness that whiskey has always held for me. Starting from Mugler’s Amen Malt to Nasomatto’s Baraonda, and from Penhaligon’s Lord George to the ever-popular By Kilian’s The Liquors collection, whiskey-inspired fragrances have long held a steady spot in my rotation. I start to crave their smokiness and boozy richness as soon as autumn deepens and winter begins to bear its icy teeth – as they swirl around me like the warming amber glow of aged whiskey in a cut crystal glass. This year, however, for the first time, I found myself indulging in whiskey-inspired scents year-round, discovering and savoring the full spectrum of their charm, in different temperatures, and bringing new facets and moods. So, this year, I went from the delicious apple-pie smokiness of Hez Parfums’ Bourbon Street, which became my early spring love, to the warm, sweet, and addictive blend of boozy and gourmand notes in Manos Gerakinis’ Imperial Malt, which perfectly ushered in the first crisp days of sunny autumn.

Sarah McCartney and Sarah Baker

Come the rugged cold of November, I am ready for the smoky, rugged charm of some robust Scottish variety – and just in time, here enters the beautiful Tartan Cask, courtesy of Sarah Baker and independent perfumer Sarah McCartney.

Sarah Baker perfumes are a real treat, starting with the packaging –  and the new 50ml bottles are an absolute joy to hold, fitting perfectly, rounded, and smooth in the palm of your hand. The heavy vibrant orange cap, inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge, pays homage to Sarah’s hometown of San Francisco and the sun logo engraved on top is a nod to a 1980s amusement park logo that she loved as a child. The unboxing experience overall is sheer tactile joy – so satisfying, it almost makes me want to go and put on some black pointy long acrylic nails and dive headfirst into a TikTok-inspired ASMR unboxing session.

It’s not often that my inner Adele kicks in to soundtrack my life, but this time, the first whiff had me humming Skyfall before I even realized it. Instantly, I was back at the premiere of one of my favorite Bond movies, twelve years ago – all moody feels and brooding intensity.

“Skyfall is where we start
A thousand miles and poles apart
Where worlds collide and days are dark

Imagine yourself as Bond returning to your ancestral home in the Scottish Highlands. What smells would greet you? Enter the house, your steps echoing on the weathered stone walls of the hallways, fingers touching the thin layer of dust on the wood paneling, as you climb the steep stairs. Clear your voice before entering the room, and the thick warmth of the air envelops you like an orange, thick, and fuzzy childhood fever dream. In the stone fireplace the fire crackles and dimly lits the library, with the leather armchair welcoming you in the old, familiar embrace. The old clock is stuck in a world where is always 23.23, lights dancing on golden accents of the leather-bounds books that fill the antique bookshelves covering the walls all the way up to the peeled-off ceiling decorations.

“For this is the end
I’ve drowned and dreamt this moment
So overdue, I owe them
Swept away, I’m stolen”

Zoom in to the rough texture of the tartan wool blanket, the half-full glass of peaty whiskey, and dark burgundy lipstick marks on the edge. Zoom out through the wafts of tobacco smoke in the room, draw out the thick curtains. Breathe and take in the untamed beauty of the brooding landscapes of moss-covered ruins, rustling heather, and rugged coastlines.

“Hold your breath and count to ten.
Feel the Earth move and then
Hear my heart burst again”

Sarah Baker Perfumes Tartan Cask is raw, unapologetic, and deeply evocative. Starting off smoky, almost bitter, like the cask-strength whisky, with earthy damp moss, hints of iodine, and – with taste-bud-awakening-realistic whiskey taste, carrying all the depth and undertones of peat smoke used during the malting of barley. Surrounded by tobacco, leather, and lacquered polished wood – it turns into a 3D evocative experience that has become my addiction of choice, during these cold November evenings out on the town. Side effects warning: it made me binge-watch old Bond movies, buy new fluffy blankets  and it raised Adele (way too) high up on my Spotify chart.

In three words: warming, autumnal, smoky

Notes: Peaty whisky, smoke, cedar, moss, bread, leather accord, hops, tobacco, Buddha wood, labdanum, heather

  • I absolutely love deep smoky perfumes during the colder months of fall. Tartan Cask, with its notes of whiskey, smoke and hops, certainly sounds perfect. I liked the description: “warming, autumnal, smoky. I do love Tartan and my favorite from Sarah Baker is Flame & Fortune. MI USA

  • Tartan Cask is an exclusive members only NYC club for the hoi polloi versus a picnic at a state park with a bucket of KFC. Both great but it’s winter and we all have a few habits we’d like to scuttle. When I read the notes, I expected a fruit to be in there to offer a softer landing to the uninitiated, but no. This is your rich in-laws den, in all it’s glory. Congrats to Nicola on the evocative review and putting the smokes down. If the world were to end tomorrow, I’d be behind you at 7/11 buying two packs, a few Snickers bars and wearing this perfume. With a few glasses of bourbon. I live in NY, a prime start place for all kinds of destruction. I still love it.

  • The review describes the fragrance as a lucid dream. What stands out is its ability to evoke not just a scent but a texture, an emotion, and a story: the worn tartan blanket, the warm glow of the fire, the smoky haze of the library.
It’s not just a fragrance; it’s an experience, a moment captured in time that invites you to step inside and live it.
    This is artistic parfumery.
    Greetings from Italy

  • Anything that is evocative and draws parallels to agent 007 has my full attention. I think Nicoleta’s review paints the perfect picture of what the fragrance wishes to convey. Now, all that remains is to smell it

Thank you for the draw. Based in the EU

  • When the Fall season is in full swing, the rich, deep boozy notes are in their element. I agree with Nicoleta on the allure of a good whisky-forward fragrance; the sweet, smoky, warmth and richness it embodies. With all the various takes on the whisky note, the options are limitless. With Tartan Cask, you get an ode to Scottish whisky–she compares the experience of it to Adele’s Skyfall–the rugged Scottish Highlands in a manor house, the darkening nights, being enveloped in a smoky library reading. books in a weathered leather chair. Describing it as “raw, unapologetic, and deeply evocative”; that is high praise that makes me want to experience those notes of bread, Peaty whisky, smoke, cedar, moss, hops, and heather, especially. This is definitely a scent to experience for oneself.

  • Nicoleta’s evocative review of Tartan Cask truly transported me to a world of rugged charm and smoky elegance. I’ve long appreciated whiskey-inspired fragrances for their ability to convey warmth and complexity, but the vivid imagery of crackling fireplaces, moss-covered ruins, and a glass of peaty whisky beside a well-worn leather armchair has left me yearning to experience this particular scent. The raw and unapologetic character, blending smoky peat, earthy moss, and tobacco, seems to encapsulate the soul of a true whiskey lover’s winter haven. As someone who treasures fragrances that offer an atmospheric journey, I’m particularly drawn to the notes of cedar, hops, and Buddha wood—elements that promise an intriguing evolution on the skin. The inclusion of heather and labdanum only deepens my fascination, hinting at both rugged landscapes and comforting warmth. Nicoleta’s description of Tartan Cask as a “3D evocative experience” has sparked my curiosity, and I’d love the chance to immerse myself in its moody, autumnal embrace. Regards from NY 😉

  • I absolutely love the vivid imagery in this review! The way Nicoleta describes the scent of Tartan Cask feels like an invitation to experience a full sensory journey. The mix of smoky peaty whisky, leather, and tobacco immediately pulls me into that cozy, autumnal atmosphere—like being wrapped in a warm tartan blanket in front of a crackling fire. I can already imagine the rich depth of the fragrance with its earthy moss and heather notes. Plus, the nostalgic Skyfall vibe is a perfect touch! It’s definitely a fragrance I would love to experience on those chilly November evenings.

  • Sarah’s line is among my faves and I’m dying to get my nose on this one. Though Flame & Fortune has a hint of tequila in it, I wouldn’t dream of calling it a boozy scent, and I’m eager to see how she approaches a more liquor-forward fragrance. Her direction is always classy, but also unpredictable and with a touch of madness. As such, I’m sure there’s a twist in here that will at first have our jaws on the floor until we realize that it works so perfectly we wonder why it hasn’t always been a thing. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • The perfume is inspired by the Scottish Highlands, which gives it a distinctive character. The use of tartan as a motif is both culturally rich and visually appealing and I really love this and it sparks my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I still haven’t tried any fragrances from Sarah Baker Perfumes or any fragrances made by Sarah McCartney. I’m interested to experience the peat-like smokiness, the whisky qualities, the tobacco, leather, and lacquered polished wood. I’d love to try “Tartan Cask”. I live in MD, USA.

  • David Furman says:

This composition sounds elegant and evokes a feeling of peace. For me the rich natural ingredients and the dark smoky facets it holds is very alluring this time of year. Sweet and smoky elements play off of each other and this durable duo is.a fail safe. I anticipate this lovely creation will sell out and be missed all to early. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • I don’t enjoy whiskey, but I did enjoy a trip to Kentucky and the smell in the rick house is amazing. Love the fine details in that cap connecting to Sarah’s childhood. I don’t know that song Skyfall. I better look it up. I am a fan of Sarah of 4160 Tuesdays’. Sarah Baker’s fragrances I have yet to experience. I’d love to win this amazing sounding fragrance. USA.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Skyfall by Adele is one of my favorite Bond songs ever created and I’m glad someone is as obsessed as I am with it. It’s a very brooding and moody song and based on Nicoleta’s description, so is Tartan Cask. It almost feels like you’re in a old-timey movie and a mysterious man is sipping on a whiskey that has been aged in a barrel for years. Deep, resinous and full with a very peculiar bread accord this fragrance sounds very intriguing. I must watch Skyfall (the movie) after reading this review. I’m located in the US.

  • This review makes Tartan Cask sound like an absolute dream! The smoky whisky, leather, and mossy notes are giving total cozy autumn vibes—like being in a Scottish library with a fire roaring and a glass of something strong in hand. And honestly, I’m here for the whole Skyfall moment—Bond, blankets, and brooding landscapes? Sign me up. Sounds like the kind of scent that’s not just a perfume but a whole mood!

  • I’ll admit whiskey fragrances are new to me, I’ve heard of them but haven’t tried any yet. I have had some glorious whiskeys though and have been to Scotland for a long 6 month visit and I adored it. It’s perfect to me that these notes include a “peaty” whiskey, heather and hops. I just know it’s going to bring back memories for me! Thank you for the giveaway. I am in the U.S.

  • Oh, this one does sound lovely-like sipping whiskey near a fireplace covered with a blanket after a walk in Scottish highlands! Perfect scent for winter time. This might also cause me binge watch Bond films Thank you for the lovely review and for the price. I am in EU but also in Scotland, UK for New Year.

  • This reflection beautifully highlights the connection between scent, memory, and mood. Whiskey-inspired fragrances are described as deeply atmospheric, evoking everything from rugged Highland retreats to cozy autumn evenings. The playful nods to Bond and Adele add a nostalgic charm, while the exploration of these scents year-round underscores their versatility and depth. A true celebration of scent as an art form and companion to life’s moments.

  • Nicoleta’s review si like a journey in the scents of a whole day. Smoke, moss, leather and of course whisky swept just to relax and meditate. It feels cosy, warm and welcoming, perfect for winter.

  • I always thought of whiskey inspired fragrances as strictly cold-weather scents, The amber smokiness always seemed to lend itself to fall and winter. I’ll definitely have to check out Nicoleta’s recs for spring and early fall whisky perfumes. Tartan Cask is definitely for the cold with the peat smoke, wood and leather. The moss, tobacco and heather add some earthy notes to remind you of the Scottish highlands. MD, USA

  • I am always drawn to whisky based scents as I do love a good whisky and the combination of notes that make them up are soooo close to a perfume. There are shared components in whisky and in perfume, really. The review made me want to go back to sampling more, but Bourbon Street has made it onto the want to try list for sure, so I might start there! I live in the US.

  • The review is amazing and “Tartan Cask” sounds like a unique and captivating fragrance that offers a truly immersive olfactory journey. Since I love tobacco, leather and woods I’m sure I would love it! Can’t wait to try it.

    Thank you all!

  • I have never tried anything from Sarah Baker, but I do love boozy perfumes (although I do not think I have tested anything with whisky either) and I hope I can start this journey of discovery with Tartan Cask.

    Thanks from the EU!

  • What sparks my interest the most from Nicoleta’s review is the unique concept of blending the warmth of whisky casks with the freshness of tartan-inspired notes. The idea of a fragrance capturing such a rich, textured story is incredibly appealing. The mention of Sarah McCartney’s expert touch in crafting this extrait makes it even more intriguing. I’d love to experience the depth and complexity of Tartan Cask firsthand. I live in Romania, Europe.

  • Nicoleta really captures what makes an aged whisky smell incredible, and some of the best ways that scent can be interpreted via perfume. I’m partial a peaty scotch, so Sarah Baker Perfumes Tartan Cask immediately caught my attention, including the on-brief packaging. I’m intrigued by the rugged notes McCartney used here and the “raw, unapologetic” approach to an earthy, smoky, salty, sweet dram. The setting of leather, wood, and tobacco sets the scene. Tartan Cask sounds exceptional and I’d love to try it.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I spent a little over a year is glasgow, and tried all the whiskey I could. I loved Scotland, the people, the accent, the country. The whiskey is something that can travel to me, and this scent sounds just wonderful. I also find them warning during the colder months.
Thank you for the generous draw and review.

  • Iulia Butnariu says:

It’s been so cold lately, these last few weeks I’ve been craving some of my most comforting scents, boozy and smokey in particular being one of my favourite profiles in perfumery. Nicoleta’s review reflects how suitable this fragrance is for the colder weather. To be fair I want nothing more than to be transported to the Scottish Highlands, but I could settle on spraying this and watching the Bond series at home.
I’m such a fan of Sarah McCartney’s work!
    I’m UK based.

  • foreverscents says:

I no longer drink or smoke, but I crave fragrances with whiskey and tobacco notes. I am also a huge fan of anything even remotely related to Scotland. Nicoleta, as always, wrote so evocatively, so vividly, that I felt I was in a lodge in the Scottish Highlands…I can hear the fireplace crackling. Tartan Cask sounds so transportive. The bottle is gorgeous!
    I live in the USA.

  • Come on! Anything by Sarah Baker and Sarah McCartney that makes you smell like James Bond having a quiet drink next to a roaring fire in a castle in the Scottish Highlands is of interest to me The notes sound great

THanks for the nice review Nicoleta.

Whiskey is like perfume – so many different facets based on process and the way that it is consumed. I just love how this fragrance digs deep into the comfort of sinking into a nice comfy spot, with a good drink on a dark cold day.

    Would love to try this.
