Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose

Is there a note you thought you would never enjoy only to have your opinion flip 180 degrees?  I am sure we could all think of at least one.  While rose was never a hated scent, I certainly wasn’t drawn to rose-centric perfumes at the start of my fragrant journey.  I thought of rose as the scent you only found in a basket of potpourri or that fresh, dewy note so prominent in the Tea Rose worn as your great-aunt’s signature scent.  While rose in this manner has many fans, there seemed to be so many more interesting scents for me to focus my time on.

When I was living in the Middle East, I was almost constantly surrounded by rose fragrances without being “aware” of them due to my limited  understanding of what rose perfumes smelled like.  It wasn’t until I was able to try fragrances such as Tauer’s Incense Rose that my nose was opened to a world of entirely new and amazing roses.  Suddenly, I started smelling rose everywhere I went; wafting from the Arab fathers dropping their children off at school in the morning, mixed with green incense in the bukhoor burning at shops and homes and even mixed into the creamy Persian desserts I had come to love.  Each version is a different take on rose but, none matching the ones I had grown up with; I was a rose scent convert!

When I first smelled Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose, I knew this was going to be my kind of rose fragrance – a rich, woody, balsamic rose.  American Perfumer Sanae Barber spent time living in the Middle East so perhaps her experience has woven its way into this creation. Smoking Rose, (a mitti attar which is baked earth with sandalwood) has the richness of true Middle Eastern attars where the rose is lifted by fresh green wood, mixed with lavender and the spice of geranium.  As an all-natural extrait de parfum the sillage is excellent and longevity superb.  Like an attar, Smoking Rose benefits from being warmed by your skin. What stays rather linear on a blotter or scarf, blooms into a much more nuanced creation when anointed on your pulse points. As it wears, there is a pleasant muskiness swirled into the rose and woody notes that you may miss on paper or fabric.

Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose conjures an image of local farmers harvesting Taif roses on the rocky mountainsides of Saudi Arabia and Oman while fires heat the copper distillery to create the precious essential oils.  Bunches of lavender dry in shade of the sunbaked clay storeroom while burning frankincense from the nearby mosque quietly entwines itself throughout the scene.  Despite the name, Smoking Rose is not what I consider an overly smoky scent.  It does not create the image of sitting next to a bonfire or burning rose petals. The smokiness comes not in a literal sense but, from a general shrouding of the rose as if through a veil of green incense and the charred ashes left behind after a fire. While rose and oud is the most traditional combination, Ms. Barber has replaced the oud with a greener, more balsamic Peru Balsam and a hefty dose of dense herbs which keep the traditional Arabic structure while providing us something new and quite meditative.

If you haven’t found your perfect rose fragrance, I highly recommend you give Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose a sniff.

Notes: Rose, Grass, Sandalwood, Peru Balsam, Sandalwood, Geranium and Lavender

  • I have a bunch of Tauer fragrances but I regret I still have not smelled Incense Rose. Sanae lived in the middle east and Smoking Rose seems to be inspired by middle east-perfumery style and even incorporates rose from Taif. I am in US.

  • I really love the smell of rose (sometimes! when done right!) and I love the smell of mitti attar even more. I’m in New York, USA.

  • The amazing details and interesting information spark my intersst, I live in Poland, EU.

  • Great review! I liked how the attar’s benefits and unique characteristics are mentioned. It really does require the skin to bloom! (Not that anyone is applying concentrated oil to their clothes, lol). Cheers from NC, USA.

I LOVE the image that Rachel make of the local farmers working with the roses… It makes me really wish to try the perfume. I am writing from Tenerife, Spain (EU)

  • As a lover of rose, I have often been disappointed by it being overpowered by oud and spice. However, Rachel’s description of it rather being “shrouded” in a veil, and this veil being of the greener, balsamic variety, gives me hope that perhaps I could embrace this version of the traditional Arabic use of rose. As I have never had the privilege of experiencing an attar, this could be a superb introduction. I would be thrilled at the chance….I live in the Boston area, US.

  • Rachel!!! ❤️❤️❤️ This sounds wonderful! I’m much the same (not indifferent but rarely moved by rose). How wonderful to unlock a whole world of scent! I hope to attain this level of knowledge some day! ❤️❤️❤️ Perhaps Smoking Rose could be the key? Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! USA

Earthy, slightly herbal but rich is what i think this would smell like. Took me a while to pronounce the name right. Great review, thank you for the opportunity. From Romania, EU.

  • Thank you for this review! I am always looking for another rose – and I don’t think I have smelled a mitti attar before. It’s so interesting that one fragrance showed you how ubiquitous rose scents are, and how varied! I would love to try this. Writing from the EU.

  • Having lived in the Middle East for a number of years, I would be very curious to smell this ! Very intrigued

Thanks for the draw. Based in Romania

I am picky with my roses and the only rose perfume I really like is probably Oud Silk Mood by MFK, because of those herbs notes is kinda unusual to my nose(and I love it).
This Sanae Intoxicants “Smoking Rose” seems what I think that I’ll definitely enjoy because of the notes of grass and peru balm that I imagine it will draw you into a pleasantly atmosphere and keeps you there for a long long time. Greetings from Romania,EU.

  • If you haven’t found your perfect rose fragrance, I highly recommend you give Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose a sniff.

Notes: Rose, Grass, Sandalwood, Peru Balsam, Sandalwood, Geranium and Lavender. I love Rose in perfumery really fascinated by the Sandalwood and Rose. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

    Sounds really good! Thank you!

  • Unlike Rachel, I’ve always been drawn to rose based perfume, in many of their facets. I even like the ones triggering potpourri/grandma’s soap in mind:).
That being said, the combination of notes listed is intriguing, so I would love to try yet another rose.
    I am based in EU.
    Thanks for the give away.

  • Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose sounds right up my alley. I do enjoy the traditional western take on roses, but the middle-eastern take really fascinates me. Rachel does a great job describing her rose journey, which is similar to my own. I am in the US

  • Thank you for the review Rachel! I have never heard of Sanae Intoxicants (and I appreciate the little note on how to pronounce it). I think the image you described is super compelling and beautiful (the local farmers, the clay storeroom) and it motivates me to want to smell something that otherwise might never have a chance to smell. The description of the incense is also lovely.
    Thank you!

  • I like the journey into imagination “ local farmers harvesting Taif roses on the rocky mountainsides of Saudi Arabia and Oman while fires heat the copper distillery to create the precious essential oils”.

I’m Anca, and I live in Lisbon, Portugal

  • What i found interesting in Rachel’s review is that instead of the classic rose and oud combination, Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose uses rose and Peru balsam and “and a hefty dose of dense herbs which keep the traditional Arabic structure while providing us something new and quite meditative.” Quite intriguing, and I would love to try this new style of perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Rose, sandalwood and Peru balsam sound really nice. I haven’t tried anything from this house, but it’s always a nice experience to try something new. Thank you! Europe

  • I love incensy notes and rose tends to be too flaky on my skin. However, with this combination, this scent is definitely something worth trying. It sounds lovely!

    From USA.

  • I truly hope that I win this fragrance. I enjoy many types of fragrances which include rose as an ingredient. I like how the rose and the lavender is described in this fragrance. I want to see how the rose pairs with the Peru balsam. Also, I can like a lot of Middle Eastern style fragrances, and I would like to see what this perfumer’s take on Middle Eastern style fragrances is like. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Sounds beautiful, love roses, love incense. It can be my dream scent.
    Regards from Mexico.

  • I love attars and rose scents, and Rachel’s mention of Smoking Rose as something like a rose oud with the oud replaced by peru balsam and herbs peaks my curiosity! Best wishes from the US.

  • I definitely haven’t found my perfect rose fragrance, so this review immediately stood out, though I would have liked a very smoky take on rose just as well. I’ve also yet to try any attars, so the format is intriguing. Great review Rachel—I really enjoyed your account of living in the Middle East and starting to smell rose everywhere; I’ve realized many fragrances I enjoy use rose, though not in a way I associate with that note. I’d love to try this one.

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • Belladonna says:

The notes sound very good. And the story of Sanae Barber’s wild child journey is so interesting, that I am curious about her perfume point of view! Thank you for the opportunity, in the US.

  • Jake Dauod says:

I love the name of this fragrance! I am such a big fan of rose, but I still haven’t found the perfect one for me. I was so glad to read that this perfume is not another rose-oud combination (although I do love them). I am quite drawn to Rachel’s description as an herbal and smoky rose. I would absolutely love to try this one. Kind regards from Indiana, USA.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Rose fragrance – a rich, woody, balsamic rose.
I am from Bucharest Romania Europe

  • GennyLeigh says:

I have quite a few rose oud fragrances. The idea to replace the oud with PeruvBalsam and lots of herbs while keeping the traditional Arabic perfume structure is genius. The burning incense scent providing the smoke aspect of the fragrance sounds more area appropriate than a woodsmoke accord. Would love to try this! MD, USA.

  • Nose Prose says:

I love rose so this already sounds like a must-try, but the imagery of harvesting Taif roses and letting lavender bunches dry in the shade really brings home the last statement about Smoking Rose being meditative. Great review. MA, USA

  • I’ve been enjoying rose perfumes a fair amount recently, and this one does seem to be my style as I tend to go for rose mixed in interesting ways. I appreciate that the smoke is not overloaded in this scent. Thank you for the review Rachel! I enjoyed the description of this very much as I was able to perceive the perfume in my minds eye quite well. Thank you for the draw, from Canada!

  • I am a rose fragrances lover my self and this review by Rachel blew my mind. I have tried many rose based fragrances and I am always trying to find new twist on the roses, and this one surely got my attention. The balsamic rose is one of my favorite twist on a fragrance. Smoking Rose is one hell of a great name and hope I can try it soon.
    I live in the USA.

  • Helena Shinkoda says:

I’m still looking for the perfect rose fragrance!!! Amazing review!!! I’m very interested in trying it!!! I love woody notes and all the other notes combined this perfume sounds delightful!!! I’m from Massachusetts, USA.

  • I love rose fragrances, so i see myself wearing this or giving it to my girlfriend and rejoice in her smell. This fragrance just seems to be so much more than just your regular rose fragrance. Thank you for the opportunity! I live in Romania.

  • Like Rachel I wasn’t a rose perfume fan either. It reminded me of the rose soap in my grandmother’s bathroom and yes potpourri also. However when I smelled Red Queen by 4160 Tuesday in collab with Çafleurebon I actually changed my mind about rose and now own quite a few rose fragrances.
I like the idea of the Middle Eastern rose attar as inspiration for this fragrance and think this would be right up my street. I love how a fragrance can shapeshift on the skin and would love to try this.

  • Beautiful review! I am most drawn by the fact that the oud/rose combo is not present here. The green/rose combo seems to be a unique experience. Would love to try it. Thank you for the oopportunity! I’m from Romania

  • I love the idea of a shroud of green smokey incense! This scent sounds amazing! Thank you, I am in the US.

  • For me rose was also a note that I didn’t used to appreciate as much as I do now. I used to think of it as a soap scent. Until a smelling few perfumes , such as Incense Rose by Andy Tauer made me change my mind. And Smoking Rose sounds like just one of the perfumes to make you change your mind about roses…
    I’m in EU

  • Thanks for this wonderful review Rachel!

CaFleureBon introduced me to Sanae Intoxicants with Cynthia’s review of Nightcap. I was immediately drawn to the house because of their hand-blended, small batch, artisanal scents. The fragrances are more personal and tell a story that you often miss in the big brands.

I have a few Rose fragrances, but I can’t say I have found my Rose yet. I hope to find it with Smoking Rose!

And thank you for putting the pronounciation Sanae in the footnote! I have been pronouncing it completely wrong!

    Greetings from the UK!

I can so relate to Rachel as far as becoming a rose scent convert goes! Love her description of how she perceived Smoking Rose. A smoky, woody, incense’y rose with some musky nuances appearing on the skin – this sounds like a dream… Sanae Barber’s idea of replacing the oud with Peru balsam and herbal aspects is super appealing. I am based in the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Jeremy Upshaw says:

Thank you Rachel for this profile! I love the appeal of a rich and woody, balsamic rose scent; in my uncultured youth, I never considered rose a masculine option, it always invoked thoughts more of a flowery tea or candy – a grandmotherly scent. That was until I grew older and smelled rose done right – I worked with a Middle Eastern gentleman in the textile trade, and everytime I would step into his presence, he smelled of rose, and oud. My mundane job immediately turned into a chapter of travels on the Silk Road of antiquity, where traders from the far west, were mesmerized by tastes and smells so alluring and exotic. I now wear rose and sandalwood myself, and often – this Sanae creation seems as if it would add another captivating dimension to rose that I would love to indulge in. Perhaps I can inspire another young country bumpkin’ to dive into the otherwise forbidden realm of rose. Oklahoma, USA.

  • I like that Rachel describes the nature of the scent as blooming into its fullest potential only on skin, rather than on cloth or paper. I am also fascinated by this concept of mitti attar as a distillation of earth scent! How marvelous! I just love a dark and complex rose scent. I live in New Haven, CT, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I can relate to Rachel’s fragrant journey and review because I too wasn’t into Rose fragrances early in my fragrance journey, but the more into it I get the more I am gravitated to the balsamic and resinous Rose fragrances. Rachel makes Smoking Rose sound like a rich resinous and incense type of Rose that I would really love and appreciate. I am from the USA.

  • Well, Rose fragrances are always confusing me. Some time I feel that they are more feminine even if it says unisex and sometimes they are well blended and then miracle happens. No doubt that rose based fragrance is the most difficult ones to create a new perfume. Smoking Rose is the one which attracts my attention because Ms. Barber experienced the eastern and western skills of Rose fragrances. I hope to have enough luck to win this gem. Greetings from Sarajevo, BiH

  • Rich, woody, balsamic rose is exactly my type of perfume. And all the notes listed are among my favourite. Lovely review.
    Hugs from Romania

  • What sparked my interest in Smoking Rose from Rachel’s review is describing the notes and a rose fragrance that is not combine with Oud but rather Peru Balsam. I love rose and Middle Eastern fragrance and would love to experience Smoking Rose. Thanks for the giveaway. Live in USA.

    Hello dearest perfume enthusiasts!

I used to spend a lot of time walking through various neighborhoods in Inner Southeast Portland, Oregon. Portland, when not on the news for protests, is really known as “Rose City”! Wherever you go in this beautiful city, you are confronted with the beauty of roses and the multifarious fragrances that come with each. As I would amble through “Inner Southeast” I fell in love with fragrance, rose especially.

Sanae Intoxicants Smoking Rose sounds amazing. I love that there is a deviation from the traditional oud/rose pairing, and instead of oud, Peru Balsam and dense herb is used. Very interesting!

I also love the appeal to the Middle East, as I used to live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and some of my earliest memories are walking through booths at various souks with my father.

I love reading about the woody, green, lavender, spicy geranium, frankincense, and herbal aspects of this offering.

Thank you Sanae Intoxicants, and Michelyn w/ cafleurebon.com for the opportunity to win a bottle. Also, a sincere thank you to Rachel Watson for the informative and personal entry.

With best regards, Joseph O’Brien–Roseburg, Oregon (USA)

  • Thanks, Rachel, for the great review. The roses or the Middle East are special with a specific scent and I seek them out. That with frankincense and sandalwood is appealing. NC USA

  • msnitechemist says:

What an interesting combination of scents here: rose + woods + herbs and grass. I surprised myself when I liked geranium in a perfume, after years of not liking the scent of the actual plant. I’ve been mostly unimpressed with the rose perfumes I have so far sampled so based on Rachel’s recommendation, I am interested in trying this one! Middle Eastern perfumery is so different from that of the Western world that this sounds very intriguing. Thank you for the draw, I live in the US.

Thanks for the great review Rachel!

I love the sound of this scent. It reminds me of my trip to Jebel Akthar in Oman and visiting the traditional rose water distilleries – just a fabulous and beautiful rose.

I absolutely love the concept of the mitti attar (of Kanauj fame) that has been intertwined into this fragrance.

A wonderful mix of so many different styles of perfumery.

Looking forward to sampling this at some point.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Wonderful review Rachel! What sparks my interest about Rachel’s review is her description of it as a rich, balsamic, middle eastern rose that shares a lot of similarities with attars, intense, spicy and blooming on the warmth of ones sin. I love middle eastern roses and am just starting to dabble in attars so this perfume really interests me right now. I can’t wait to try it. I live in the US.
