Roja Parfums A Midsummer Dream Review (Roja Dove) 2016 + “Evergreen Enchantment” Giveaway

A Midsummer Night's Dream,

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lulled in these flowers with dances and delight.”
–William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Oberon, Act 2 Scene 1)

To recognize the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s enchanted classic,  A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Roja Dove has turned iambic pentameter into impeccable perfume. Drawing inspiration from the immortal play’s fairy woodland and the whimsical characters who inhabit it, the Shakespeare of perfume has given us A Midsummer Dream, a redolent fantasy in the form of an eau de parfum that, like the play itself, transcends genres and explores contrasts and complexities.

According to Mr. Dove, as expressed on his brand website, “perfume has the ability to remove us from reality and transport us to a world of fantasy – one where the enchanted woodland of Shakespeare’s imagination is able to come to life.” Clearly, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is fertile (forest) soil for creativity. I’m grateful to have studied the play during my years as a college theatre major, and equally grateful to have witnessed an unforgettable production in London’s National Theatre (staged almost entirely in a pit of mud). Set in a mythical world where reality and fantasy intermingle under the starlit canopy of an enchanted forest, the play weaves together the stories of four young lovers, a troupe of amateur actors, and the mischievous antics of fairies, resulting in a complex journey of love and magic.

A midsummer's Night Dream

Similarly, Roja Parfums A Midsummer Dream (Mr. Dove has dropped the “Night” aspect of the title as his creation can be worn day or night) weaves together the olfactive genres of the fougère, chypre and floral. This exploration of creative contrasts reminds me of the play’s contrast between the structured, orderly world of Athens and the unpredictable, whimsical realm of the forest and the path which joins the worlds. If I’ve not already given it away, I’m a marketing department’s dream (midsummer or otherwise), as I’m creatively open-minded and always willing to join an artist’s journey. As such, I readily perceive the composition’s suggestion of an enchanted forest replete with pixie dust.

Scene From A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania and Bottom, Edwin Henry Landseer, 1848

Patchouli, oakmoss and vetiver form the forest floor in earthy contrast to the cyclamen and geranium which provide a touch of green freshness. There’s something powdery—a green powder—in the heart notes which imparts the aforementioned pixie dust. Normally, I’d be wary of creamy or powdery greenness as it tends to go wonky on my skin, but this composition blends seemingly disparate elements into something entirely congruent and beautiful. In homage of Titania (Queen of the Fairies), who sleeps among “sweet-smelling ramblers and wild roses,”

Mr. Dove has infused the composition’s heart with rose de Mai, orange blossom and a magnolia accord which adds a creamy, fruity nuance. The signature base of vanilla, amber and musk reminds the wearer that is a Roja composition and despite a journey through the thicket, the affair remains elegant and refined. Puck need not concern himself with having offended anyone.

Those of us in the western hemisphere may be saying a forlorn farewell to summer, but in my opinion, Roja Parfums Midsummer Dream is evergreen enchantment, enduring and should be enjoyed in all seasons. I particularly love this fragrance in the spring and autumn and can’t wait to return to this mythical forest as the leaves begin to fall. Like the play from which it was inspired, Roja’s potion seamlessly weaves together the realms of reality and fantasy in a celebration of life, love and literature.

Top Notes: Aldehydes, Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Mandarin; Heart Notes: Cyclamen, Geranium, Rose de Mai, Orange Blossom, Magnolia; Base Notes: Rhubarb, Cardamom, Elemi, Pink Pepper, PatchouliOakmoss, Vetiver, Cedar, Fir Balsam, Benzoin, Vanilla, Cocoa, Amber, Carrot Seed, Musk

  • I’ve always loved fairies in stories and illustrations. As a gardener, I’m drawn to green earthy fragrances. A Midsummer Dream sounds like a beautiful cool summer evening fragrance. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • No way!!! I am in shock, another ROJA giveaway?! What I like about Midsummer Dream is that it it made and created by Roja Dove. I can’t that I would not like. All of his creations are A.M.A.I.Z.I.N.G

  • I love the inspiration behind this fragrance and how it unites so many genres of perfumery. It sounds like a very original creation and I’m grateful for the chance to win! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Oh wow, this is exciting. I’ve only tried a few of Roja’s fragrances, but they were all fantastic. This one always catches my attention as I browse around online, possibly because I played Flute/Thisbe in a shortened version of the play in elementary school . Gee, I still remember parts of that monologue. Anyway, the fragrance sounds wonderful as I love old-school chypres and fougeres. Roja is a master at modernizing classic fragrance structures and I am sure this is no exception. It may cause me to sound like a simpleton, but I am most intrigued about the aldehydes in this fragrance because from what I have smelled before, Roja really knows how to make things pop and fizz. Of course the idea of taking an olfactory stroll through an evergreen thicket is very appealing as well. It sounds very calming and I could use that right now. (I work in the schools and its already been a crazy year. lol). Best of luck to everyone! I live in NC, USA.

  • Roja Parfums A Midsummer Dream is a masterpiece. It’s my go-to for walks in the forest/beach in the spring with family. It’s my go-to for more classy events. I basically wear it everywhere. I love the story behind it and it has my favorite use of moss ever! I think its complex composition can throw people off, but I personally love it. From the first moment I smelled the perfume, I was immediately captivated and enamored, which is fitting for a love potion inspired perfume. Much love from NY, US! ❤️

  • Reading the article, and from previous Michael Devine reviews of Roja Dove fragrances I can tell he’s is obviously impressed not just by the latest releases, but by Roja fragrances as a whole , and we all know he’s right. Almost feels it’s not just A Midsummer Dream , there is a connection with the brand, like some were made for him specifically.
Other than Michael enthusiasm , and memories of his days as a student, and watching A Midsummer Night’s Dream play at London National Theater, the other thing that intrigues me the most, is the transitioning from earthy green freshness, to powdery, to vanilla and amber base.
Maybe it’s an evergreen enchantment like Michael called it , maybe something else, but I do feel delighted now.
Elysium Parfum Cologne is my favorite Roja Dove fragrance

  • It is Shakespeare who expressed perfume in a sonnet as a capturing of summer in a glass (Sonnet 5 ). How fitting that such a complex, playful, yet serious juxtaposition of notes should be titled after one of his most loved plays. I would absolutely love to try this! I live in the US. Thank you for this beautiful article and generous draw.

I agree that, not only this one, but any Roja Parfums can be worn in any season because they’re all extrait de Parfums, and strong enough to make it through any weather. I’m familiar with the Shakespeare play but I never put 2 and 2 together and this was the inspiration for this fragrance but after reading the article and looking at the note breakdown again, I get the reference. I have sampled this fragrance in the past and it is indeed a journey into the mythical. Cheers from NJ, USA.

I played Nick Bottom in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream a few years ago and it’s such a special play. I love how Roja translates his love for the theatre with compositions such as this and Diaghilev. It shows a depth and reverence for the art. Magnolia is also one of my favourite notes and it sound stunning in this composition. The contrast in the composition mimics the play perfectly and I am glad to hear there is some depth and darkness in the notes along with the bergamot and more spring-like notes. I would love to smell and own this fragrance.

Midsummer Dream merges the worlds of Chypre and amber accords to create an elegantly refined accord lapped in the riches of Nature. The aroma introduces a juicy atmosphere of grapefruit, with the elegant sweetness of rose, and a rounded base that captures spices, mosses, and creamy vanilla and I’d love to have it.

  • This Parfum has Whimsy all over it. Notes of bergamot, orange blossom, amber, vanilla are speaking to me. The description was narrated in a way that I envisioned myself in an enchanted forest of possibilities. Exciting and inviting indeed. I was considering another fragrance before reading this article but now I must explore this fragrance. Fun and inviting! It’s waiting for me!

  • Roja is one of my favorite houses, I love that the fragrances tell a story. This one in particular has alway drawn my eye with the orange blossom and magnolia accord with the base note oakmoss and vanilla. Sounds like a dream. Been dying to have one of the fragrances. Amazing read. I live in the US.

  • Roja’s inspiration for Midsummer Dream makes a lot more sense after having seen numerous reviews of this fragrance. It seems to be something that people either really like or really hate. One thing I always appreciate about Roja other than his exquisite bottle design and the quality of his blends is his story telling.

  • A Midsummer Dream! What an evocative concept. I can only imagine this in Roja Dove’s hands nothing skimpy or thin but beautiful and round and complex. I’m glad the green powder doesn’t go wonky, nobody wants that in their homage to Shakespeare. All phases sound special, from the aldehydic top to the gourmond bottom. I’d love to try this one! I live in NY what the smellin’ is good.

  • My favorite Shakespeare and from the list of notes might be my favorite Roja scent.

  • Shakespeare’s play Midsummers Night Dream is a perfect foil for a perfume. The story is redolent with fragrant imagery as evidenced by the stanza Michael used in this review; wild thyme, violet, and woodbine. The weaving together of fougere, chypre and floral styles makes for a complex scent that seemingly can be worn year round. I’m in the US.

  • The contrast you’ve drawn between the base of patchouli, oakmoss, and vetiver, and the freshness of the geranium and cyclamen in the heart notes caught my attention. This sounds like a beautiful fragrance that must be tried. I’m located in NY State.

  • I was truly taken by the name, “Midsummer Dream.” It exudes excitement and inspiration. While I haven’t had the opportunity to experience any of Roja’s fragrances personally, my readings about them have left me with a sense of their fantastic quality. Among Roja’s creations, this one strikes me as the most intriguing. It caught my attention as I was browsing online, possibly due to its unique notes that neither lean towards freshness nor heaviness. Michael’s review of the fragrance description sounds enchanting, it reminded me of the soft spot for vintage chypres and fougeres. Mr. Roja has a knack for breathing new life into classic fragrance structures, and I’m certain this fragrance is no exception. What truly stimulates my interest are the elemi and aldehydes in this composition, as they evoke memories of scents I’ve encountered in the past. The idea of embarking on an olfactory journey through an evergreen thicket is incredibly appealing, especially during these times when a sense of calm is much needed. My best wishes to everyone from Florida, USA

  • Wow, a Roja Dove giveaway? Amazing! Michael describes A Midsummer Dream as “evergreen enchantment”, and I would love to have this perfume to bring summer and fantasy into my life whatever the season.

I hope I win this one.

  • One of my favorite things on Cafleurebon is reading about fragrances I know, and comparing the reviewers opinions with mine. Michael Devine do have a distinct style of writing i can relate to, and despite we’re not being on the same page about Midsummer Dream , i still enjoyed the whole experience.
Midsummer Dream is complex , and not easy to describe fragrance, on top of all also a changeling.

“Similarly, Roja Parfums A Midsummer Dream (Mr. Dove has dropped the “Night” aspect of the title as his creation can be worn day or night) weaves together the olfactive genres of the fougère, chypre and floral.”

In my opinion the fragrance is more of a woody aromatic, very spicy, powdery and with resinous ,and woody base.
On my skin Midsummer Dream starts very green and tart, then the peppery rose and hefty dose of cardamom do show up, and the best part is the drydown when resins, vetiver and iris are the main players on the field.
” in my opinion, Roja Parfums Midsummer Dream is evergreen enchantment, enduring and should be enjoyed in all seasons.”

Agreed, Midsummer Dream is a classy evergreen with a throwback vibe.
If I have to rate my favorite Roja Dove fragrances
    1. Vintage , very first release , know amongst fragrance lovers and collectors as “paper label” of Enigma Pure Parfum
    2. Sweetie Aoud / Manhattan

Really love the concept of fragrances being based off fictional/historical settings so this was lovely to see. I’m really interested in the mentioned versatility of this fragrance, as when I imagine fragrances with vetiver and patchouli it tends to be more for the winter or colder seasons, yet A Midsummer Dream is mentioned to be applicable in all seasons and both day and night.

  • Roja Dove is the master of refined and stunning perfumery. A Midsummer Dream has to be of the same quality and specific development. What a Dream to win such a treat. In maryland.

  • This fragrance by Roja Dove truly sounds more like an enchanted potion than a perfume. Midsummer Dream is the kind of dream that you wish not to wake up from, it’s like living a fantasy or living and dream all at the same time.
The notes of this perfumes are nothing but extraordinary. In my opinion this could be the it Summer/Fall fragrance for whoever is the lucky winner. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw, commenting from Orlando, Fl. USA.

I would love to try Roja Parfums A Midsummer Dream. Roja Parfums is one of my favorite fragrance companies, e.g. I enjoy “Elysium” and “Creation-E”. I’m interested in Roja Parfums A Midsummer Dream for multiple reasons, e.g. I’m interested in seeing how Roja makes a fragrance which is categorized as a chypre, a fougere, and a floral. I like its base, and I want to see what it’s like when it contrasts with the cyclamen and geranium. Also, I’m interested in its powderiness, and its floral aspects too. I live in MD, U.S.A. I’d love to win this one.

  • I’ve only tried a couple Rojas and they didn’t do well on my skin but I didn’t give up, I still determined to find one that works because they’re amazing fragrances and quality. These notes sound perfect and tells a story which is also intriguing.

  • I’ve already sampled this creation. I was not the biggest fan at first. It’s one of those fragrances that you begin to enjoy a lot when you wear it more frequently. I love the resinous and realistic elemi in this. It smells lemony, and fresh, and has a bit of an effervescent quality to it, similar to the sparkles in Oceania, which I own. It is green, woody, and has a charm to it. Love Roja. He makes some incredible perfume. I live in the USA.

  • I know Vetiver Pour Homme Parfum Cologne is one of the most popular niche fragrances for the past few years, A Midsummer Dream feels like more artistic next of kin.
I relate Roja Dove to ultra luxury, the the best grapefruit available , delicate rose and orange blossom, all smoothen with vanilla, amber and musk , it sounds really, really good, and I also think very much lavish fragrance.
I’m also curious about how good of a fragrance A Midsummer Dream is, if Michael Devine thinks it’s a ” potion seamlessly weaves together the realms of reality and fantasy in a celebration of life, love and literature.”
Favorite Roja Dove Vetiver Pour Homme Parfum Cologne and Creation-E Parfum . Both I’m a huge fan of , both are in my possession.
    Overly exciting giveaway, USA

  • Great review—I laughed out loud when I got to ” If I’ve not already given it away, I’m a marketing department’s dream”. I like the way Dove interpreted the theme through a wide range of notes, starting with a forest floor base and moving through fruits, florals, balsam, spice, vanilla, amber and musk. I’m curious how much any of these notes stand out, though Michael’s review suggests A Midsummer Dream is a light shade of green over warm and earthy tones. Sounds like a complex blend.

I’m in the contiguous U.S. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • I’d love to visit an enchanted forest with pixie dust. This article takes me back many years when I interpreted this play (ASL), I kept sneaking peeks over my shoulder to watch some of the play. I’d love to see how Roja portrays this magnificent work of literature. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Shakespeare wrote a play about the metamorphic nature of love. Roja has done the same with this scent. It brings together a host of “players” whom blend into an overall chemical expiration of emotion and romance.
It is the chance to weave your own romance while wearing this magical spell of a fragrance

  • I’m impressed by how well Michael Devine depicted all A Midsummer Dream characteristics, and most importantly how our opinions almost match.
There’s no denying A Midsummer Dream is a classy fragrance, no wonder Michael made the connection with him witnessing te glamorous A Midsummer Night production in London’s National Theatre .
Where I differ with Michael is the powdery aspect, it’s not just “something powdery” , the fragrance i think is a powdery bomb . I smell cardamom too.
Risque for Men i love and own , phenomenal scent , and the best Roja Dove fragrance i’m familiar with .
Thank you for the awesome opportunity

I loved Michael’s comment about there being a green powdery aspect, reminiscent of pixie dust. I love rose, orange blossom, and magnolia and I’m sure these flowers blend beautifully into the composition. When Michael stated that A Midsummer Dream is “evergreen enchantment”, this further solidified my desire to have it. Thank you, Michael, for the great review, and thank you to Twisted Lily for the generous giveaway. I live in the contiguous US.
