Puente Perfumes Zotikos (Eliam Puente) 2023 + Summer by the Sea Giveaway

Let me stop here. Let me, too, look at nature awhile.
The brilliant blue of the morning sea, of the cloudless sky,
the yellow shore; all lovely,
all bathed in light. ~
from Morning Sea by Constantine P. Cafavy (Greek poet, 1863-1933))

Whenever artisanal perfumer Eliam Puente of Puente Perfumes is working on something new, I am eager to smell it. His first three perfumes (Medusa, Vespertine, and Iris Doux) were spectacular, and I purchased small bottles of each. I was excited when I learned of a summer citrus in the works months ago named Zotikos, after a small village in the Epirus region of Greece (Zotiko): a citrus, spiced gin and tonic fragrance bolstered by a woody ambergris-inspired base. Zotikos is an altogether different perfume than the previous three, which were exuberantly floral in nature – and I was understandably curious about it. I’ve come to the conclusion is that Puente Perfumes Zotikos is its own creature, separate from previous work – and a step towards a new direction.

As we envision the vast, miraculous broth which is the ocean from whence we evolved – it feels natural to link the sea with Eliam’s chosen name for his latest fragrance, Zotikos: it translates as “full of life”. How to create an elixir vitae encompassing the vigor of this primordial solution and balance the relaxed, sophisticated leisure of a summer gin and tonic? As well we know, many cocktail-inspired fragrances may flit upon the ether shortly after application. It’s simply their nature – and it is difficult to achieve a lasting impression with botanical materials alone. Puente Perfumes Zotikos conjures a dolce far niente atmosphere from the outset with an explosion of bergamot, bigarade and lemon accompanied by a goodly dash of black pepper; the pepper serves multiple functions, as it is floral, dry, and spicy all at once. Zotikos’ heart is pure gin – brimming with zesty juniper berry, coriander, a complex spice accord, and prized angelica root (Beefeater Gin’s botanical lineup uses both seed and root, for example). Angelica, by the way – is very persistent for such a relatively delicate aroma, and a little goes a long way; it shares both earthy, peppery notes and musky/woody ones.

At the base of Puente Perfumes Zotikos is where we find ourselves amidst the flotsam and jetsam of the open waves: we can credit Givaudan’s Ambrofix™ for that. This potent aromatic material is said to be one of the closest evocations of true ambergris among today’s sustainable synthetics, and although it is often derived from clary sage, a new process has evolved in which sugar cane is employed instead. Its woody, arid amber tone brings to mind driftwood and the ships’ hulls as they lie drying in the blazing sun – a fitting manner of completing the entire experience of summer by the sea in Greece. There is a trace of salinity present, tenderly cradled in a judicious dose of vetiver and gentled by white musk.

Puente Perfumes Zotikos is a beautiful, long-lasting departure from Eliam’s previous oeuvres, and a charming one. Precious few of us can resist the scent of the open air and an ocean voyage (sans Calone®, Firmenich) as citrus groves waft their splendor. Zotikos is a Mediterranean vacation encapsulated.

Notes: bergamot, bitter orange, lemon, black pepper, juniper berry, coriander, spices, angelica root, Ambrofix, vetiver white musk

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • What was appealing was when the reviewer said, “I’ve come to the conclusion is that Puente Perfumes Zotikos is its own creature, separate from previous work – and a step towards a new direction”. I also like the angelica note in perfume. US

  • The freshness of this perfume really appealed to me especially because of the heat waves where I live. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

I love gin and tonic type fragrances. It’s nice to know that this one is designed to last a long time. Sounds very refreshing and relaxing. I live in Maryland USA.

  • What I liked about Ida’s review is: the beginning with the beautiful poetry that made me feel the grandeur of what will come later in the review. Also, her way of describing the dry down, and the information about Givaudan’s Ambrofix. Thank you for this enjoyable review, I hope luck will be on my side to win this international giveaway. Fragrant greetings from Algeria.

  • I am still in love with the ocean scents even as we slowly start to approach fall. Beautiful ocean creations continue to draw me in. In maryland.

After the comparison to a gin and tonic, I was pushed over the edge of enthusiasm after reading: ‘It’s woody, arid amber tone brings to mind driftwood and the ships’ hulls”. In a fantasy life, I live on a glorious wooden boat and sail from island to island, and I imagine this is what I smell like. I live in the USA.

A beautiful description by Ida I am fascinated by Ambrofix and its closest resembles real ambergris as well as spices, white musk and vetiver. This sounds perfect for the high heat. I liked the use of angelica root conveying earthy, peppery woody musky aroma. Thanks a million from the UK

  • Two things really captured my attention was the use of Ambrofix and Angelica root to really take this fragrance to the next level. Curious to smell this on skin sounds like a magical concoction. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Wow, Zotikos sounds wonderful. I love juniper berry in fragrances, and the juniper combined with bitter herbs and citrus sounds right up my alley. Eliam Puente sounds like a very talented perfumer and I’d love to try his work. Thanks for the review and giveaway!
    I’m in WV, USA

  • I didn’t come across Puente yet, and this was a tempting read. I like these gin like scents and especially combined with angelica, when there’s a certain bitterness and texture in an aquatic sensation. I’d love to win Zoticos to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • Zotikos’ description sounds interesting. I love G&T and the infusion of juniper berry into the fragrance aligns perfectly with my preferences. Eliam Puente’s work piques my interest, and I am enthusiastic about experiencing his creations. The giveaway is much appreciated! New Jersey, USA

  • oh, this sounds just gorgeous, I love gin, g&ts, and any scent that mentions the sea….I would love to try this, and the images I got from the review make me want to go on holiday to the beach right away. I’m in the US.

This sounds like my kinda of seaside adventure, cosy summer fun with a nice g&t. Lovely review.

  • Ida’s review of Zotikos is lovely! The highlighted gin botanicals sound so refreshing. I would love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • This sparked my interest: “This potent aromatic material is said to be one of the closest evocations of true ambergris among today’s sustainable synthetics, and although it is often derived from clary sage, a new process has evolved in which sugar cane is employed instead. • Starting with the meaning of the name of this new release: Zotikos – full of life, to the indeed lively, zesty, energizing notes of the composition: citrus bigarade in the opening, followed by a gin accord and finally angelica root on a slightly saline base rounded by musk and energized by vetiver, it all sounds like an expression of joie de vivre, an ode to summer and everything pleasurable in life.
I’d feel so lucky to experience this.
    Commenting from the EU.
    Many thanks!

  • Well, any sea scented fragrance grabs my attention! This one sounds like a vacation in a bottle as well! I live in the USA.

  • Great review by Ida here.
To be honest, this is the first time that I read something about Puente Perfumes, but the house looks very promising. Zotikos looks like a perfume that delivers a fantastic experience of a gin tonic based note that is amazing. Also love the earthy and the musk notes on it. I would love to win this one.
    USA here.

  • I haven’t tried any of Eliam Puentes compositions yet, but he seems to be an exceptionally thoughtful perfumer. Zotikos sounds like the essence of Greece with notes of citrus, a spicy gin and tonic with a woody ambergris base. I would much rather smell of gin and tonic in the hot summer months than a frozen pina colada. I’m in the US

  • I recently tuned into the Instagram live where Mr. Puente explained everything that goes into creating Iris Doux- it was fascinating and his passion was evident! Citrus notes combined with my favorite drink’s scent and the glittering aura of ambergris sounds beautiful. I would be thrilled to try this perfume. In US

  • What appealed to me in Ida’s review the most is that Zotikos is its own creature, separate from previous work – and a step towards a new direction. Its woody amber tone brings to mind driftwood and the ships’ hulls as they lie drying in the blazing sun – a fitting manner of completing the entire experience of summer by the sea.

  • Firstly, thank you Ida for making the review and expanding my awareness of yet another fragrance house! I think what makes me consider sniffing and trying Zotikos is the use of Ambrofix and my curiosity to smell something that is seemingly a very close synthetic to ambergris. Also, being late summer and trapped in the city right now has me craving the water and time at sea, and if this scent can bring me a fresh citrus-y, musky, oceanic virtual getaway then that would be wonderful! Thank you for the giveaway, from Canada!

  • A gin and tonic by the shore sounds like a perfect pairing! I’m also a lover of black pepper as a note, so this sounds like a great perfume to try. I’m in the USA.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

Ida got to me with “Zotikos is a Mediterranean vacation encapsulated.” That is what I’ve always been searching for!
Also, it’s a citrus, spiced gin and tonic fragrance bolstered by a woody ambergris-inspired base, which sounds soooo good!
    Hugs from Croatia, EU.

  • Reading Ida’s description of Eliam Puente’s new gin and tonic fragrance, I was caught off guard by the “goodly dash of black pepper,” which is an unusual and intriguing choice in this type of composition. I also assume it acts as a textural bridge to the “pure gin” heart, playing off the spiced juniper and angelica root. The nautical Ambrofix™ and vetiver is a welcome pairing with summer’s citrus cocktail, all while avoiding troublesome Calone®, which is, frankly, overused. Zotikos sounds both refreshing and reminiscent of calm days in a seaside villa—wonderful. Great review, Ida.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I have had the pleasure of smelling Eliam’s prior creations, and I loved every single one. Hopefully this mediterranean creation can find it’s way to my collection. I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Nothing like a gin and tonic to give a person dolce far niente kind of attitude. Interesting they use sugar cane in the Ambrofix. I’d love to win this and imagine a mediterranean vacation. Sounds divine. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Excellent review by Ida of Zotikos as she describes as being a Mediterranean vacation encapsulated. What appeals to me is the Ambofix which is mention to be the closet to real Ambergris. Thanks for the opportunity. Greetings from the USA!

  • Ida’s mention of juniper berries and her evocative description of the angelica note particularly piqued my interest in this review. Thanks you to you and the generous Eliam for the draw opportunity.

    I live in the US.

Thanks for the wonderful writeup, Ida.

It was really nice to read about this fragrance and all the wonderful ACs that went into making it, particularly Ambrofix.

I also enjoyed the two images that create nice sense of a watery, refreshing fragrance with a lot of nuance.

    Cheers from WI, USA
