Providence Perfume Co. (Charna Ethier) 15th Anniversary + 3 You Should Be Wearing Giveaway

Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co.

Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co.

It is our pleasure to help celebrate artisanal natural perfumer Charna Ethier’s 15th anniversary. How can it be that her Providence Perfume Co. is already fifteen years old??? It seems like yesterday: sitting in her then-little kitchen in Providence, Rhode Island with a very young Poppy and Graham, reading stories; a relatively small spare room (to the side) pressed into service as a perfume organ. A great deal has transpired since then, and Charna has evolved from a budding perfumer of promise to a seasoned, skilled educator and artist with a showcase brick-and-mortar studio. If memory serves correctly, she has created 38 perfumes to date – with two new vanilla fragrances just released.

Have I smelt each and every one? I have. Do I love them? Well, I keep purchasing and repurchasing them, and I’ve lost track of how many I have given to friends over the years – so that should answer any questions. Be they perfumes, oils, botanical essences, candles, skin, hair and body products – Providence Perfume Co. creations never fail to delight. Their pleasure is only augmented by the realization that you can help support an individual artisan – which is gratifying.

Naturally, I was hard-pressed to choose only three scents. Some of the early ones which I adored were discontinued long ago; a few others appear to have been tweaked slightly since their original release (but not all). I eventually decided upon a trio of very different perfumes in the interest of variety – and true to my word, I’ve purchased them each more than once. Those amongst you who are familiar with her work very likely have your own favorites. Let’s begin chronologically.

Providence Perfume Co. Love in a Mist review

Providence Perfume Co. Love-in-a-Mist (2016). Love-in-a-Mist was inspired by the flower Nigella damascena – a plant which is native to the south of France and western Asia. This remarkable material is rare and expensive: a mere milliliter costs 33 Euro. Often likened to manuka and acacia honey, its ambery animalic facets illuminate everything with which it commingles – and it possesses a charming wild strawberry-grape facet as well. Love-in-a-Mist is all about endless summer détente: mimosa and sweet clover serenade lazy days, sun-warmed meadows, daisy chains, and the accompaniment of buzzing fat bumblebees, crickets, and cicadas. You can feel the earth’s pulse. Go barefoot; climb a tree. The grounding sandalwood is a joy; jasmine is a seamless companion here, part of this fragrance’s intrinsic warmth and lyricism.

Drunk on The Moon Providence Perfume Co.

Providence Perfume Co. Drunk on the Moon (2019): Boozy, blowsy, inebriating: Drunk on the Moon is a louche, pulsating perfume in which decadence is the order of the day. I once described it as “a more youthful Tom Waits’ smooth, buttery-jazz delivery of the street scene he encounters peppered with the plaintive wail of a sax.” I stand by that. For all its elegance and addictive spicy gourmandise, Drunk on the Moon is a bluesy fragrance all about the sex lives of plants that underscore its diabolical allure: the forbidden tuberose, hallucinatory nutmeg, prurient plump juiciness of peach. Creamy sandalwood and sweet myrrh (opoponax) are smooth as charmeuse. Perhaps it would be prudent to check the ID of those who would buy Drunk on the Moon, just so we’re certain that they are legally responsible…

Providence Perfume Co. Lapsang Lover (2022)

Then lay your rose on the fire
The fire give up to the sun
The sun give over to splendour
In the arms of the high holy one
For the holy one dreams of a letter
Dreams of a letter’s death
Oh bless thee continuous stutter
Of the word being made into flesh. ~ excerpt from The Window by Leonard Cohen

Charna Ethier’s Lapsang Lover is a rose on its ladder of thorns – the incalculable loveliness of shrouded desire wed to sanctity and myth. Underneath its leathery, singed sweetness lurks the intoning of a primordial canticle. Charna has seen fit to hover above the precarious balance between the bitter and the honeyed with enviable aplomb. As a result, Lapsang Lover feels perfectly contemporary while maintaining a beautiful classical bone structure in the manner of European haute parfumerie. Its tenacity is remarkable; a mere drop will linger for many consecutive hours, complete with a stunning sillage. Darkly luminous, this perfume possesses a haunting, melodic melancholy.

Providence Perfume Co. Lapsang Lover Notes: lapsang tea tincture, black tea, labdanum, fossilized amber, myrrh, rose, resins, cardamom, honey

Perfumes were all purchased by me. My nose is my own…

  • I love when an indie artisan/perfumer is highlighted. I love learning and discovering new indie brands. As a lover of all tea fragrances Lapsang Lover piqued my interest the most although they all sound beautiful.

  • I have a bottle of irisque I love . I would love to try lapsang lover or love in a mist . Hard to choose from these descriptions!

  • Ooh I love this house!! Ventiane, Moss Gown, Hindu Hibeysuckle, Irisque and Lapsang Lover are all ones I have and love. That inky amazing tea and a slight mustiness from the natural tea that reminds me of night blooming Jasmine with that hint of cardamom!
Well now to decide between the two I don’t have?! Torture. Oh gosh I suppose Love In A Mist. If I’m so lucky!
    U.S.

  • I’m a student from Italy and I’m new in the niche world fragrances, and I’d like to discover new scents that can surprise me. In particular I’d be interested in lapsang lover, that I think could be a warm and mysterious hug that follows you in these cold winter days.

  • It’s amazing to see how a perfumer has stayed true to natural and sustainable fragrances, amidst an evergrowing market of synthetic blends! All three featured scents sound incredible.. But if i had to choose, Lapsang Lover would be my pick since i’ve never owned a tea based fragrance before..

  • just stopped by to give a hurrah to a cherished friend and admirable perfumer.

no need to enter me in the draw- the fact of 15 years of PPCo is reward enough.

truly, Charna- you are immensely talented and a wonderful human being to boot. big love!!

  • A heartwarming portrait of a house I have been meaning to sample, thanks for highlighting independent artists
Your descriptions make me swoon, so I’d pick the swooniest sounding of them all, Drunk On The Moon.

  • I love this house with a special nod to Jadeite (which now seems to be discontinued). I am so craving something boozy right now. I would love to win Drunk on the Moon. I’m in the states and following you everywhere. Thanks for this opportunity and for everything you do!

I love the fragrances i have tried from Providence Perfume Co, especially Irisqué and Shivoo. They are just so perfectly blended. I also love the perfumery materials available on the website, especially the essential oils.
Ida’s superbly-written reviews make it difficult to choose among the three. But I am a lover of tea fragrances–and fragrance with a medical quality– so I would choose Lapsong Lover.
Congratulations to Providence Perfume Co. !
    I live in the USA.

Thanks for the lovely review Ida.

Lapsang Lover sounds like my kind of fragrance – smoky, resiny and contrasting the sweetness of rose with the puckering astringency of black tea.

I would love to try this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m not really familiar with natural perfumery but I appreciate the artistry and knowledge it takes to make a composition without synthetics work. I love a boozy fragrance in the cooler fall months. I also love tuberose and the addition of an “hallucinatory” nutmeg notes has me intrigued. I would live to try Drunk on the Moon. MD, USA.

  • I have longingly researched Charna’s website, unable to decide…. this post helps me narrow the choices to 3…. and reminds me it is time to do a bit more research…..I would love to try Love in a mist, but Drunk on the moon is a close second. Thank you for the draw and the lovely review! I’m in the us

  • Congratulations on 15 years! Repurchasing is the greatest compliment. These all sound amazing. I am unfamiliar with the Nigella Damascena plant. I would love to win this a feel the earth’s pulse. I would love to see what Charna does with this creamy sandalwood. My favorite note of the moment. I was unaware this brand does body care as well. I will go to the website. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I love natural perfumery but have yet to try any of Providence Perfume Co’s fragrances – a big miss on my part! As always, Ida does a wonderful job of making each perfume come alive on the page. Of the three highlighted here, I’d love to try Love-in-a-Mist! I’m always curious about how perfumers choose to showcase rare materials in a composition. I hadn’t even heard of Nigella damascena until today, but it sounds absolutely stunning paired with mimosa, jasmine, and summery wildflowers. Best wishes from the US!

  • They all sound so wonderful. The revisit to a childhood summer of Love-in-a-Mist is a memory I’d love to see again in all that vividness and color. The Tom Waits reference TOTALLY puts me in the moment for Drunk on the Moon and if I wasn’t really come and go on tuberose centric scents, that would be my pick. However the layered darkness of Lapsang Lover is my pick. That combination of bitter and sweet in balance is too tempting!

  • Dear Ida and Michelyn,
Thank you very much for all the support you’ve given me over the years. I so appreciate the attention you’ve shown small artisan perfumers such as myself. Spending time with my family and celebrating our milestones together is the ultimate show of love and support!
    With gratitude,
    Charna

  • Lovely profile of Charna’s perfumery. Her lineup makes for a fun sample set, and there’s a lot to try, with Tabac Citron leading the pack for me. I’m happy to see Lapsang Lover is one of Ida’s selections; it’s a friend’s favorite and just as tenacious to my nose as Ida suggests. I haven’t tried Love-in-a-Mist, but it sounds like a fitting take on a unique material, enhancing the floral with the vibe of a carefree summer day. I agree that Drunk on the Moon is decadent stuff—rich, heady, languid.

I’m in the USA. If I were to win, I’d choose Lapsang Lover.

  • We in Providence (well, Pawtucket) are blessed to have two incredible perfume houses to celebrate (January Scent Project being the other); I’ve been dazzled with all of Charna’s creations I’ve been able to test but my favorite by far is Drunk on the Moon, and I’ve been longing for a bottle ever since I got my nose on it! I wasn’t expecting to be so taken with it as a sometimes skeptic of boozy and creamy fragrances, but I was instantly head over heels… I love your blues metaphor, and your description really gets right to the heart of everything I loved about it! It’s also got a vampy old-Hollywood glamorous excess to it that I just couldn’t deny — while still feeling noticeably modern. It would be a dream come true to win a bottle!

  • Leonard cohen I’m a big fan of his . I want all of them but if I have to choose I choose lapsang! I am drunk on the moon after all .
