“…I lead them to Tanneron, on the other side of the moors, on a day of howling wind, and vibrant sun. The passageway runs in the sky amidst an opulent landscape with slopes that fade away under the mimosas. I came home with yellow spots dancing in front of my eyes and a whirlwind of light inside me.” Albert Camus et Maria Casarès, Correspondances, Gallimard 2018

The Scent of Mimosa in the Uninvited 1944

The Uninvited movie poster 1944 (Paramount)

In the wonderful 1944 film, The Uninvited, the haunting smell of mimosa blossoms signals the presence of the story’s ghost. The elusive but unmistakable fragrance of mimosa is perfect for wraiths, its characteristic face powder note suggestive of times past. And, in the right hands, mimosa can be …. otherworldly.

Perris Monte Carlo Mimosa Tanneron, from master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, is a watercolour mosaic of fragile florals that seem to float even they while they caress the skin. Named for the center of mimosa growing in France, Mimosa Tanneron is a stunning mimosa perfume: ethereal yet realistic, like fresh-cut mimosa blossoms whose fleeting scent carries and fades with the vagaries of a breeze.

Perris Monte Carlo Mimosa Tanneron review

Bouquet de Mimosa Marc Chagall

Mimosa is not usually a scent I am drawn to in fragrance because of the tendency amongst many perfumers to draw out its ladylike powderiness, and I am rather less well-bred in my tastes. But in nature, its fragrance, particularly when the blossoms grow in profusion, is achingly lovely, the smell of a late spring day of such perfection you cannot bear for it to pass into memory.  Only lilac can match mimosa for its ephemeral grace. But where lilac’s scent is poignant and made for days of wet pavement and passing clouds, mimosa laughs and darts in and out of the sunlight and shadow of a brilliant Riviera afternoon in spring. In person, mimosa has a complicated fragrance with notes of vanilla, cucumber, rain, candied angelica and green almond, and these facets come out in profusion in Mimosa Tanneron. As the perfume opens, I am struck by how aquatic it initially seems to be. This is not to say that it smells of calone, salt or hedione, but rather, the cucumber facet of mimosa is very present and yet abstract, suggestive of cucumber without exactly bringing it to mind. In this way, the top notes give the impression of being near water.

A waft of rice powder is certainly there, too, as you would expect. But it is muted, allowing the blossoms to sing in full harmony. Joining the mimosa is the milky-musky sweet smell of hawthorn, a note prominent in Chanel Beige. Here, it adds a full-bodied quality to the mimosa in the middle that gives Mimosa Tanneron a surprising touch of sensuality. Rose, pink, cottony and not fully open, meanders its way into the fragrance. Eventually, its petals open and their scent becomes silky and lush. There is a redolence of hay now, too, the smell of drying grass. Later, white musk pulls the fragrance close to the skin, but, walking back into the room where I first sprayed Mimosa Tanneron, it lingers in the air like an afterglow.

With each spray, this perfume draws me further and further in, to a place I remember well but have never been. Great perfumes can do that. Here, Jean Claude Ellena has given us a supremely elegant mimosa fragrance that conjures the winding road to Tanneron, where the mimosa fields sweep the roadside and illuminate the air like puffy orbs of sunlight, and their fragrance smell like first love.

Notes: Mimosa absolute, hawthorn, rose, white musk.

  • With each spray, this perfume draws me further and further in, to a place I remember well but have never been.

I am intrigued by the the notes of mimosa, white musk and rose in particular a grear review by Lauryn. My favourite from this house is Bois d oud. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Only lilac can match mimosa for its ephemeral grace. But where lilac’s scent is poignant and made for days of wet pavement and passing clouds, mimosa laughs and darts in and out of the sunlight and shadow of a brilliant Riviera afternoon in spring. A beautiful description by Lauryn intrigued because I don’t have any mimosa fragrance in my wardrobe. My favourite from this house is Musk extreme. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • I love!!! lilac, that this was connected to it by the writer by saying, “Only lilac can match mimosa for its ephemeral grace. But where lilac’s scent is poignant and made for days of wet pavement and passing clouds, mimosa laughs and darts in and out of the sunlight and shadow of a brilliant Riviera afternoon in spring. ” is all I need to hear to try it. A sunnier sibling would be a nice change in the rotation of spring scents.

  • Ethereal yet realistic sounds fantastic. Add on to that unmistakable mimosa notes and I think this might be a great fragrance. Don’t have a favorite Perris Monte Carlo perfume yet. I live in the USA.

  • I bought jasmine du pays when I read the reviews and wasn’t disappointed. Jean Claude Ellena is my favorite perfumer and I love mimosa. Lovely art too
    USA

  • Loved how Lauryn made comparison between mimosa and lilac. I liked the description of mimosa being ladylike and powdery. I love feminine perfumes so this maybe a possibility for me. Curious to try something from Perry Monte Carlo as I don’t own any from the house. I’m based in the US.

  • I really have been liking Mimosa as a note recently but find it tricky because when it gets too powdery I really dislike it. This one sounds beautiful though! I love this quote ‘illuminate the air like puffy orbs of sunlight’. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Bryant Worley says:

This fragrance sounds like it will be very nice to inhale, with all of its floral aspects.I really appreciated this visual: “Here, Jean Claude Ellena has given us a supremely elegant mimosa fragrance that conjures the winding road to Tanneron, where the mimosa fields sweep the roadside and illuminate the air like puffy orbs of sunlight, and their fragrance smell like first love.”

I’ve only tried one Perris Monte Carlo- Jasmin de Pays. So, by default, that’s my favorite…..for now. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

I am so curious as to the smell of mimosa in this perfume. It sounds lovely and ethereal the way that Lauryn describes it. I don’t have any perfume of my own that has that note, nor do I have any Perris Monte Carlo fragrances. Thnak you for a lovely review and thank you to Perris Monte Carlo for their draw. I’m in the USA

I do not have a favourite Perris Monte Carlo perfume. I liked this part of Lauryn’s review, “There is a redolence of hay now, too, the smell of drying grass. Later, white musk pulls the fragrance close to the skin, but, walking back into the room where I first sprayed Mimosa Tanneron, it lingers in the air like an afterglow.” I live in the US.

  • Barbara Wittersheim says:

The drying grass and hay with mimosa sounds like a light and airy place to be. It seems like this is answering a need that life has now.
“Eventually, its petals open and their scent becomes silky and lush. There is a redolence of hay now, too, the smell of drying grass.” I’m in the U.S. Thank you for this opportunity.

  • blombergskan says:

Sounds dreamy! ” With each spray, this perfume draws me further and further in, to a place I remember well but have never been. Great perfumes can do that.” Yes! And no one does it better than JCE. I have yet to try Perris Monte Carlo Fragrances. Living in Sweden.

  • I would love to try Mimosa Tanneron as I love the smell of Mimosa and have yet to find the perfect Mimosa scent. Plus this is by Jean Claude Ellena and I love many of his. I’ve never tried Perris either so this would be a good introduction. Also excited it has a hawthorn note. I’m in U.K.

  • valentina says:

Thank you, Lauryn, I now know I need this perfume in my life because of it’s ephermer grace. Nicely said. I don’t owe any perfume from this house, but maybe I will be lucky now. I am from EU.

  • Thank you Lauryn for an illuminating review. I’m also not drawn to mimosa but it sounds like Whirlwind of Light should at the very least be sampled based off the reaction you had to it. I love Santal
Du Pacifique and Rose De Taif from Perris Monte Carlo. I’m in USA

  • Mimosa, hawthorn, “a waft of rice powder” and “a redolence of hay”? Wow, this is a unique combination of notes I’m certain I’ve never had the pleasure of smelling. I’m totally intrigued thanks to Lauryn’s review. Based in the US.

  • I have been dying to smell a fragrance that captures the scent of mimosa. Lauryn seems to think it hits the spot. I don’t have a favorite Perris Monte Carlo perfume and I am in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I am not very well-bred, so I completely understand what Lauryn meant about ladylike powderiness in some fragrances. But Tanneron sounds just right with its almost aquatic feeling, along with the hay, drying grass, and musk. I loved the Camus quote and I can’t wait to watch “The Uninvited.” I haven’t tried anything from Perris Monte Carlo.
    I live in the USA.

  • Pixiedust2 says:

Not only has this been on my list to try, I love the movie The Uninvited! I saw it as a child and it helped spark my love for ghost movies. Until Lauryn’s review, I had completely forgotten that mimosa was the scent that warned the ghost was nearby. Perhaps that’s one reason I’m so attracted to mimosa scents. That movie made mimosa so mysterious and otherworldly. Lauryn seems to agree that mimosa draws us to a mysterious place. Love this review!

I still haven’t tried anything from the brand, but this, along with Patchouli Nosy Be and Vanille de Tahiti are all on my list to sample. I’m in the US and would love to sample this.

  • Compared to Voices in Water, reviewed by Ida recently, Mimosa Tanneron seems so much gentler, simpler, airy and cheerful, drawing “…me further and further in, to a place I remember well but have never been” as Lauryn said so well in her review. Enjoyed the review, the pictures, the quote by Camus. Would love to try this and experience for myself the olfactory, ethereal beauty of Mimosa evoked by Lauryn. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Roberta O says:

“Mimosa Tanneron is a stunning mimosa perfume: ethereal yet realistic, like fresh-cut mimosa blossoms whose fleeting scent carries and fades with the vagaries of a breeze.” I actually love a powdery floral. And, this also sounds like a pretty true mimosa which I have yet to smell. I can’t wait to smell this. I live in the US.

  • I would be so interested in experiencing this expression of mimosa. Un Fleur de Cassie was much first introduction to this note, and has become a favorite, but this sounds so much more pure and true to the flower itself. I love Jean Claude Ellena’s work, and Lauryn ‘s description confirms the elegance, subtlety and truth I so much appreciate in his fragrances. I have never tried any of the Perris Monte Carlo line, but wish I could!

  • Based on Lauryn’s review, what appeals to me about this fragrance is the mimosa absolute aspect of it. My favorite Perris Monte Carlo perfume is Vanille de Tahiti. USA.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

I am always so excited to hear that JCE has created another masterpiece. His creations are always elegant. I would love to smell this rendition of mimosa. Thank you for the review and generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • genmartini says:

I love Mimosa. for the past 19 years my husband and I have returned to Bordighera, Italy – where his family have a home and where were were married. The hills around Bordighera are covered in cultivated Mimosa, this is an important growing region for this flower, which is sent out for the various flower markets throughout Europe. It is THE flower given to women on ‘International Women’s Day’ in Italy. This flower gives me memories of nothing but love, young love and enduring love. ~ USA/EU

  • IvanVelikov says:

Such an elegant scent. My girlfriend is a fan of mimosa fragrances, and she’ll enjoy it. I’ll give her the bottle if I win.
Bois d‘Oud is my favorite Perris Monte Carlo , but just know 2 .
    Thank you , USA

  • Love Mimosa it’s character is so multifaceted. The comparison to the “afternoon glow” is very romantic, I’d like to experience it myself. I am in Germany. My fav Perris Monte Carlo perfume is rose taif

  • Ater reading Lauryn’s beautiful article with Mimosa and being drawn in to the winding road of a place I have never been, Tanneron. Rice notes and powdery Mimosa. I have never sampled any of the Perris Monte Carlo fragrances. USA

  • Jake Dauod says:

What appeals to me most is what the fragrance is trying to achieve. It sounds like a wonderful floral fragrance that is perfect for any spring day. I was also drawn in when Lauryn mentioned mimosa because I truly love that smell. I haven’t tried any perfume from Perris Monte Carlo so I sadly do not have a favorite. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Danielle de Feo-Giet says:

Mimosa is the smell of joy, of luxurious simplicity. It is no wonder that a simple but delightful aperitif is named after it, describing a sunny morning in a glass with its name.

    I couldn’t possibly resist it.
