Perfumology L’Ima Review + Tali’s Garden Draw

Nir Guy of Perfumology was inspired by his mother Tali's garden for L'Ima

Nir Guy and his mom Tali (Avital )Guy whose childhood garden was the inspiration for L’Ima

It was late April when I first heard from Nir Guy: he and Justin Frederico were busily at work on a new perfume they had been for some time. The inspiration arose from his maternal grandmother’s garden – fond memory of a personal Eden bustling with summer’s blooming plants, vegetables, fruits and flowers. That self-same garden had been just big enough to host his parents’ wedding. Nir desired a perfume to reverence his mother Tali’s love for growing things. The fragrance (soon to be named L’Ima: for Mom in Hebrew) needed to encompass all aspects of the garden and retain an airy feel: herbal, floral, citrus fruit, greenery. Perfumology L’Ima sought a delicate balance. There could be no preponderance of any one facet, and longevity was essential. It’s not unusual to gather so many aromatic materials together that a fragrance loses focus. There are the players’ personalities to consider, too: will they all get along? Will some tend to grandstand and steal the limelight? How do you ‘conclude’ a fragrance without altering its fundamental character? These were some of the challenges Nir and Justin addressed during the honing of their fourth collaboration Perfumology L’Ima.

Nir Guy and Justin Frederico perfumer

Justin Frederico is the perfumer for L’Ima (he has co created each Perfumology fragrance to date: Blyss,  Grange, and Clutch  in collaboration with Nir Guy)

Creative director Nir Guy and perfumer Justin Frederico have stealthily invited you into the garden in full flush; close the gate behind you, it’s a private pleasure. Citrus groves flourish in such a climate, and zest oils spritz off their skins at the merest touch. Herbal borders smell divine and help keep pesky insects at bay – just watch that peppermint and verbena, though; they’re likely to take over any garden if left to their own devices! Their intense greenness assumes a different hue alongside the tangy soil-redolent aroma of tomato leaf and stem. A summer garden without tomatoes? Perish the thought; that’s heresy.

Perfumology L'Ima review

Top: Orange Blossom, roses; Bottom Victoria (Nir’s  maternal Grandmother) and Pomelo blossom from  the garden of Tali’s youth

Summer roses and fragrant-leafed geraniums linger good-naturedly beneath grateful nose and fingertips, garnished with an occasional plush lily for decadence’s sake. Orris and ambrette furnish opposing facets – earthy, animalic scented quicksilver contrasting sun-splashed citrus. Elemi’s lemony resin enjoys the peppery company of cardamom and copaiba. Copaiba is a talented material, blending/bridging the path between heart and base, particularly the sandalwood and only a dusting of amber, so as not to disturb overall aromatic harmony. Cashmeran and white musk round out rough edges for a tender touch. Balance is everything.

Perfumology L’Ima is an unusual perfume in that it’s not only delightful and refreshing – it’s also intriguing. Its singularity feels intimate, savory. While it certainly may be worn year ‘round, L’Ima blooms exuberantly in the heat, making it a pleasure in warmer temperatures. Consider it your new summer staple.

Notes: lemon, orange, pomelo, peppermint, lemon verbena, tomato leaf, geranium, orris, neroli, lily, rose, ambrette, elemi, cardamom, amber, copaiba, cashmere, sandalwood, white musk

Many thanks to Nir Guy of Perfumology, who kindly sent me an advance flacon!  My nose is my own.

Ida’s Note: For those of you as yet unacquainted, Nir’s mother Tali is one of the most hospitable women I’ve yet to meet – and a fabulous cook and baker as well.  I am deeply touched to have been asked to collaborate as evaluator. May she enjoy Perfumology L’Ima and wear it in good health!

I adore Ida’s writing always. Her words leap off the page with splendid imagery. In the case of this L’Ima review, the fragrance comes alive through words and becomes a tangible life on its own. As I read, I am taken first to the garden where the inspiration first sprouts…then to the mind and creative spirit of the fragrance. Such a lovely review. I hope to have the opportunity to try the fragrance.

  • I enjoyed reading how this perfume, inspired by something as simple as a garden, is not only fresh and vibrant but also warm and a little spicy. I am also excited this is a 30 percent concentration! I live in the USA.

  • Such a sentimental creation. I am quite certain that with the meaning attached to this fragrance, it is quite the homerun. (Commenting from USA.)

  • I enjoyed how descriptive this was of the garden and like the fact that it,s made for Nir’s mother and based on his grandmother’s garden. Thanks. CT USA

  • This sounds like a gorgeous summer scent. I love the description of the various facets of a garden it evokes. I’m in the US.

Given where they come from, the notes make sense. Jaffa was known for its oranges and blossoms. Paired with the other green notes and flowers, it sounds like it perfectly captures the smell of the region. Sunny, bright, full of growth. Sounds like a gorgeous scent
(btw, the translation is “to mom,” since the addition of ‘L’ means “to,” so it’s even more of a tribute to her)

Im in the US. thanks for the draw

What a special story behind this perfume. Any perfume that I have smelled that is dedicated to a mother or wife has that extra special… I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s like Mom’s cooking. It has that extra ingredient in it, Love. It sounds like this has that in spades as well. Thank you for sharing it with us. <3

(And I completely agree with Ida about the importance of tomatoes in a summer garden!!!)

  • Wow, 30%! Sounds like a lush garden, via the note description! Thank you for the draw. US.

When I first read the name of this fragrance, my mind immediately knew that it was the Hebrew word for mother and I immediately wanted to try it. Ida’s description of the this beautiful garden put me in mind of my mother as well. Beautiful writing as always. Thank you for a lovely review and a most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Thanks for introducing me to a new perfume note, Copaiba. As a gardener myself, I echo “Tali’s love for growing things.” I would love to try this new inspirational perfume. Thanks for the opportunity! USA

  • Harbinger says:

I love that Ida was asked to collaborate as evaluator of L’Ima. I also love that it has tomato leaf as a note as I would really love to try a perfume with tomato leaf. As always, Ida paints a picture that makes me want to try a fragrance! A summer savory fragrance sounds so good! USA Thanks for the draw!

I love reading about other people’s summer gardens. Better yet, spending time in the garden, breathing in the tomato plants (must be tomato plants) and herbs and flowers. As a city person, I dream about about a backyard garden, especially one surrounded by a wooden fence and gate, better to have vines growing all over.
I love the tribute to Nir’s mother.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love all those fresh notes of citruses and tomato leaf. What a wonderful scent for the summertime!
    I live in the US.

  • I enjoyed Ida’s review of L’Ima due to her talent of being able to take us along with her to this beautiful, varied garden! Living in the desert southwestern US, we don’t have too many natural, fragrant flowers and they are often very short-lived…I would love the chance to experience a garden such as the one tended by Nir’s grandmother and this perfume may just take me there! Thank you for the chance! I am in the US.

  • caitlinmorgan says:

Ida’s review contains the evocative, poetic line “zest oils spritz off their skins at the merest touch.” This euphony alone makes me long for a stroll in this garden, to experience all else which might be there. Reading on, I see that there’s a lot going on in this fragrance—a real gift to the senses. Perhaps I’ll get a chance to experience this for myself. I’m in San Francisco, California, United States.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love everything about this review. From the flowery language to the perfume’s inspiration to the listed notes. There is something so comforting about the scents of a garden and this review brought me back to my own mother’s garden that I used to help her tend when I was a child. I really need to sample this one. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Enjoyed this descriptive article. Great story behind this fragrance and This sounds like a really nice Parfum. Haven’t got the chance to try a fragrance from Perfumology. Thanks, US

  • Queen Cupcake says:

I love Ida’s writing as well. I think I most enjoyed the feeling of the garden in its totality: flowers, fruits, herbs, vegetables. I can almost taste this one!

  • I enjoy Ida’s reviews because she makes you see what’s behind a particular perfume and you can relate. I like that L’Ima can be worn all year round and the inspiration behind the name is sweet.
    I live in California.

  • I love that they’ve tried to capture everything “herbal, floral, citrus fruit, greenery” and at 30% the longevity must be amazing. Thank you for the description and the draw, I’m in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, great review of Perfumology Lima. It sounds like a pleasant well balanced fragrance with floral, citrus, and mint. I always enjoy the descriptive imagery in Ida’s reviews. I am from the USA.

What a lovely tribute to his mom, and a unique combination of ingredients. I live in the US. Best Wishes to Nir with this latest offering.

I love that it is named Mom in Hebrew. I’d love to visit Nir’s Mom’s garden, it must have really made an impression on him. There is a lot going on in this fragrance that’s for sure, but if Ida says it’s “refreshing, delightful and intriguing”, I’d love to try it. I love a 30% concentration!!! Maybe Nir’s next fragrance will be based on the smells of his Mom’s baking/kitchen. USA. Thanks Ida for taking us to Tali’s garden.

  • I love Ida’s way of describing fragrances, and this really was beautiful to listen to almost like you can smell it yourself. Writing from Virginia, USA.

  • I loved the description of the summer garden of Nir Guy’s youth, as well as the personal comment from Ida on Tali’s hospitality and cooking. This perfume sounds lovely! I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Nir is such a great guy. I’ve been to Perfumology a couple of times.Ordered 9…no-10 bottles there. Own Blyss and Grange – i really like both.
Service is great. If i have to rate Perfumology i would give it 9.5 .
I’m taking 0.5 points away because they do not carry the full range of Tauer Perfumes.I wanted to get Une Rose de Kandahar , but it was not available . Nir are you reading ? Lol Stock up Tauer Perfumes pls 🙂
First time i’ve heard Perfumology was in one of MrSillage videos on Youtube. Went there because of him to be honest.
    … RIP Chris

  • Outstanding review by Ida of a intriguing fragrance. Perfumology L’lma sounds like a great garden fragrance for the summer heat. I Love it, love it. I live in CA, USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • Herbal and floral, citrusy and fruity and at the end greenery. That’s exactly how I imagine the smell of well maintained gardens. No doubt Nir grandmother’s garden was one of those.
Never had a chance to go to Perfumology ,but as boutique I know it’s wildly considered to be one of the best places to buy fragrances in the States.
I know they use cardboard type of material instead of boxes for the own fragrances, so they can keep the price low.
Oh’ there was a beautiful Father’s Day article on here on Cafleurebon for Nir and his father.
Thank you guys – appreciate the giveaway campaign .

Tomato leaf and stem, herbs, flower goodies, a rounded softness, no insects and 30% oil? Are you kidding me – nirvana. I found a ten-year old sample of Thierry Mugler “A Travers Le Miroir” last night and discovered that all the alcohol had dissipated and I was left with about six drops of pure oil. ::fans self:: Ida’s review makes me want to grow things; reality makes me want a friend who grows things. L’Ima sounds like a beauty. I live in the USA.

  • Thank you Ida for another wonderful review and long live Nir’s mother Tali. These notes have my mouth watering and I am especially intrigued with the combination of peppermint, cardamon, cashmere and white musk. An interesting tidbit is that lima as one word translates to garden (the verb) in Swahili 🙂 I am in TX USA

  • I’ve heard of Perfumology both on YouTube and on Cafleurebon . Personally never been there, or ordered from Nir , but all reviews and opinions about the store are positive.
Clutch a top addition to my collection. Received it as gift mid june , that’s why i can’t share my thoughts about Perfumology boutique , but i have to say Clutch…is clutch – delivers every time . Smells like …eating a cake in front of a campfire .
If I happen to be the winner of L’Ima I hope the zesty , herbal and sour accords will be more pronounced on my skin.
    Thank you for the opportunity

I’m also reminded, spending summers with our grandparents, the essence of the flowers, lemon blossom, and raspberry, sounds like a great scent.

Happy owner of Grange . and i also know Clutch well – i bought a sample , when i got my bottle of Grange . To me Clutch is a colder weather fragrance , Grange is more of a spring fragrance , and we have L’Ima for the summer.

  • Never been to Perfumology myself, but the 2 orders from their site went well, and I have to say i received my Imaginary Authors fragrances in two days. Two !!! L’Ima should be a top fragrance for the summer . Fruity , citrucy , savory , refreshing and intriguing and named after Nir’s mom. Checks all the boxes for me.

  • Excellent review by Ida and her writing gives the fragrance life! I enjoyed his maternal grandmother’s garden as inspiration of this fragrance. My favorite line was: “Perfumology L’Ima is an unusual perfume in that it’s not only delightful and refreshing – it’s also intriguing. Its singularity feels intimate, savory. While it certainly may be worn year ‘round, L’Ima blooms exuberantly in the heat, making it a pleasure in warmer temperatures.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!
