Perfume for New Year’s Eve: OK Fine Fragrances Reviews + Designated Driver Draw

Ok Fine Fragrances reviews

At this time of year I must remind myself that I no longer drink alcohol … not even a drop.  While I make a point of attending friends’ festivities and family gatherings, I am far from the irrepressible party girl that I was just a few years ago. Now, as an observer rather than a participant, I find myself surprised and amused by the antics and Bacchanalian shenanigans of my fellow guests – knowing full well that no matter how much I hate to drive, my services will soon be requested to transport the inebriated safely home.  I too have been, on many an occasion, at least as sloshed as these friends and thankful for a sober chauffeur. Nevertheless, I can’t help but feel a wee bit put upon and resentful of the responsibilities foisted on me as Designated Driver. Staying home alone is not an option; so yet again I will ring in the New Year, as so many others do, chafing in my sober role. But happily, this season the sting and stigma of Designated Driver-ship has been mitigated by five remarkable olfactory “libations” created by OK Fine Fragrances, the new, unique and excellent adventure in perfumery, brought to us by veteran perfumer Steve DeMercado and his friend and band mate, innovative marketer and fragrance developer Michael Simpson.

OK (I can almost hear you ask) how can any perfume replace the desire for a good stiff drink?  Here is my short version. Since approximately 2009, when I first encountered the EdP Queen Latifah, I have been enamored of and have been following the work of multi Fifi award winning master perfumer Steve DeMercado. His career in fragrance spans well over 30 years and his creations for Marc Jacobs, Vince Camuto, Calvin Klein, Coty and Michael Kors, among many others, are legend. With the  2019 debut of OK Fine Fragrances, Steve DeMercado’s signature style and Michael Simpson’s passion for creative marketing have come together in American Oak barrels, infused with a variety of alcoholic spirits.

The idea of aging fragrances in American Oak, infused or not, is genius!  “This process has been used to add aroma, complexity and to smooth fine wines, whiskeys and bourbons for ages, and now we’re pioneering this creative process for an entire range of fine fragrances.” – Steve De Mercado and Michael Simpson.  Amber in Mezcal, Smoked Oud in Bourbon, Santal in Gin, Double Vanilla in Bourbon and Patchouli in Golden Rum – each fragrance is a carefully wrought, limited edition, an olfactory cocktail that serves as a stand-in for the forbidden (to me) boozy shot, the spirits infused in the perfumes providing intoxicating pleasure, just short of inebriation.

Upon reflection, the first OK Fine Fragrance that I tried, AMO Batch #401 Amber, aged for 39 days in a Mezcal seasoned, charred American oak barrel, is the most unusual, the most abstract of the five. The slightly dry, green, sweet clay-like and smoky aroma of excellent Mezcal, spiced with suggestions of what could be Yerba Mate, floats around my skin briefly before settling into golden woodsy amber, laced with dark labdanum. Despite notes of   Benzoin and Tonka, #401 Amber in Mezcal is never thick or gourmand, but from start to finish, wraps me in a gossamer, otherworldly veil of scent, fading after about eight hours into a dry mist of vanillac woods. Notes: Olibanum, Labdanum, Benzoin, Tonka and Woods.

OBO Batch #302, Smoked Oud aged for 47 days in a bourbon seasoned oak barrel, begins as a beautiful somewhat traditional incense perfume touched with a brief suggestion of attar of roses, freshened with spicy ginger. Olibanum, frankincense and a hint of what could be burning oud chips transport me to memories of midnight Christmas masses and the obligatory swinging censors billowing fragrant clouds of incense. Just as I settle into contemplating the sacred mysteries, I notice a familiar comforting scent wafting from the man sitting next to me in the pew.  An arresting presence, the suave warmth of fine, smoky aged bourbon, has me wondering if my role as designated driver must extend to a total stranger, one who has obviously had far more than his fair share of holiday cheer. No! This time my good deeds stop in the sanctuary! I am here to relax and partake of the incense and woods – and I do just that for twelve hours and more.  Notes: Blonde oud, ginger, sandalwood, juniper berries and olibanum.

SGO Batch #501, Santal aged in a Gin seasoned, charred American Oak Barrel, is a potent, smooth hybrid sandalwood warmed with woody, spiced notes of cardamom. Juniper berries and the gin infused oak barrel manage to tame the mineral and slightly raw qualities of Australian sandalwood, offering me olfactory recollections, the smells of the antique wooden furniture in an historic, upscale bar where I used to order a drink or two. #501 Santal in Gin progresses over a period of ten hours, from the earthy and edgy to an almost buttery, round Mysore-type sandalwood, all the while retaining a dark, totally sensual, polished and politely seductive persona. Notes: Sandalwood, Cardamom, Cypress and Juniper Berries.

OK Fine Fragrances #101 VBO Double Vanilla in Bourbon review and OK Fine Fragrances #201 PRO Patchouli in Golden Rum. reviews

Ultra smooth, exotic, complex and sultry – words fail as I attempt to describe OK Fine Fragrances VBO Batch #101 Double Vanilla in Bourbon.  OK’s luscious (yes it is!) vanilla fragrance is seasoned for 62 days in a bourbon infused charred American Oak barrel. The already inimitable luster of an amalgam of several gorgeous types of vanilla is amped up by tonka and vetiver and finished with a creamy suede note, enhanced and refined by the magical enzymatic actions and reactions that oak barrel aging provides.  Aging in oak is known to impart smooth, round, vanillac qualities to pretty much whatever is in the barrel or cask. American white oak from Oregon is especially prized for this effect. Fruity notes, florals and even coconut nuances are often developed in the process.  As VBO Batch #101 Double Vanilla in Bourbon matures on skin, the perfume becomes even more beautiful. Fruit and smoky bourbon build on a structure of fine vanilla and woods to create a stunner of a fragrance that leaves me tipsy with the pleasures of pure vanillac delight.  Notes: Vanillas, Tonka, Vetiver and creamy Suede.

PRO Batch # 201 ages real Patchouli in Golden Rum for 52 days.  As the enzymatic interaction between the fragrance and the charred oak barrels works its magic, the rough head-shop vibes of patchouli are transformed and refined into a new intoxicating, sweetly profound dimension of scent.  Sheer notes of golden rum, vanilla and fresh cut wood smooth and resurface the dark patchouli with veneers of burnt sugar, caramelized molasses and smoke.  In fact, PRO # 201 Patchouli in Golden Rum enjoys a double dose of enzymatic action, the Rum itself also having first been aged in oaken barrels!  Rum, fruity nuances and a unique buttery quality developed from the barrels create a new, irresistibly fresh and intoxicating perfume that raises the bar for patchouli fragrances in general and redefines for me what a fine gourmand perfume should really smell like. Notes:  Patchouli, Tonka, Vanilla and Wood.

  • I’ve never been a designated driver. I really like the concept of OK Fine Fragrances. I am eager to try/win Double Vanilla in Bourbon or Patchouli in Golden Rum. They both sound amazing. Sigh! Happy and Safe New Year to all. Thanks you for the review and the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Cookie Queen says:

Sadly I cannot enter. I just wanna say, with the exception of a whisky in Scotland last year, I have not drunk alcohol for 30 years. But patch and rum sounds good, we’ll they all do. Happy New Year. Lots of love Val. Xxxx

  • I’ll be sober this year as well, but unfortunately I don’t drive so I can’t offer to help any friends in that way. I’m a very steady walker/ Uber arranger though! I am all about sandalwood, so the Sgo Santal is the one that speaks to me the most. -USA

  • I have been a designated driver more than once. I woke everyone up, one by one, as I drove them all home safe, a long time ago. Smoked Oud would be my choice, if lucky. Happy New Year all USA

  • I’ve been a designated driver and am happy to rotate that duty with friends when we go out. Aging perfume in wooden barrels is a fabulous idea! It brings a complexity to alcohol so I’m sure it would bring depth to fragrances as well. Happy New Year all! I’m in the US

  • I’ve got to be at work at 0645 on 1 Jan, so no designated driver or ringing in the New Year for me. These all sound so intriguing but that Sandalwood & Gin is calling to me. Loved the review but my sample list is getting insane right now! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I have definitely been a DD and don’t mind if I’m in good company! I love how woody, smoky, and complex these sound! I also love how they don’t sound overly treacly/sweet despite resinous notes. Thanks for this generous draw! I’d love the Vanilla if I won. I’m in the US.

  • I enjoyed reading the description of each of these very unique fragrances. I am drawn to a couple but I would love to win AMO Batch #401 Amber. I live in Dallas, TX. Happy New Year!

  • I am enamored with the fact that the brand uses multiple vanillas in their VB Batch 101. The thought of smelling drunken vanilla booziness jumping off of my skin is quite a fitting thought moving into the New Year. I would be interested in winning a bottle of Double Vanilla in Bourbon. P.S. I have never been appointed designated driver. I’m usually the one in need of one lol.(USA)

  • AMO Batch #401 & PRO Batch #201 sound great as I like Amber and Patchouli. VBO #101 sounds great too.
I have not been a designated driver because I didn’t hang with people who needed one. I’m in Texas. Happy New Year!

  • Love Gail’s descriptions of this entire line of fragrances. Everything sounds so gorgeous, from the “otherworldly” 401 AMO Amber to OBO Batch #302’s “arresting presence” to SGO Batch #501’s “politely seductive persona” to the “complex and sultry” VBO Batch #101 Double Vanilla to the “intoxicating” PRO Batch # 201 Patchouli. Would love to win SGO Batch #501. Have never been a designated driver (fortunately LOL!). Regards from Boston USA.

  • Yes, i have been a designated driver, and yes, I have been driven! Cfb has featured this house before, and I still love the idea, esp as I do love a good, slightly smokey whisky. Sgo or vbo would be lovely, thank you to OK for their draws! In the US this year!

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Aged in booze barrels sounds awesome. Haven’t tried any from the house, but I would have to pick #101 Double Vanilla in bourbon – sounds like a solid frag.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • Immediately from the review I was drawn to the VBO Batch #101 Double Vanilla in Bourbon. That is also the one I’d love to win in this draw. US

  • I have never been a designated driver. We stay home and have a big food table and snack all night. Then a little champagne at midnight.
    Would love you try the
    PRO # 201 Patchouli
    USA

  • Wow ! Each of these fragrances sound truly intoxicating. As a fellow non-imbiber of alcohol, I too would welcome any of these heady aromas to my fragrance wardrobe. I am, however, particularly fond of Oud and Amber. While I have never served as a designated driver, it is primarily due to the fact that I do not drive ! What a lovely concept in perfumery this is !

  • i’m always the driver, which is fine by me, i drink, but only to taste something. these fragrances sound so different & interesting that i must try them! starting w/SGO Batch #501, as i can’t wrap the notes around my head. thanks & happy new year from california

  • Great article Gail! These fragrances intrigued me so much that I put a sample order in. Your descriptions sound heavenly, so I’m sure that I will not be disappointed. This really is an awesome concept and further adds to the layers of the scent.

I’m usually the designated driver as I’m not much of a drinker, though with my eyesight, it’s still a scary ride in the dark.

If I were to win, I’d love Smoked Oud, that sounds like heaven to me!

    Happy New Year from Boston!

  • I am always the designated driver. The Double Vanilla in Bourbon sounds fantastic. Interesting how the aging in wooden barrels makes a difference. Thank you for the draw! US.

  • I live in the USA never was much of a drinker, Patchouli in Golden Rum would be my choice. Happy New Years

  • I like that in the VBO the review mentioned the barrel giving it facets of fruits or even coconut. If I was to win that is the one I would like to try the most VBO. I have been a designated driver. More often than not Its just I have to go pick up my brothers when they r out and have had more than a few. In CT USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • “At this time of year I must remind myself that I no longer drink alcohol … not even a drop.”

Never smoked cigarettes in my life, and never did drugs, even marijuana, but I do admit alcohol was a huge part of my life, to a degree I can’t even describe. I was an alcoholic, and went through 2 clinics to help me out. I too no longer drink alcohol…not even a drop for the past 4 years.
Boozy fragrances I enjoy a lot.
Double Vanilla in Bourbon I would like to win because of :

“Fruit and smoky bourbon build on a structure of fine vanilla and woods”

Thank you for the introduction of OK Fragrances, never heard of them before. I’ll read the previous reviews now.
    Happy New Year. US

  • OBO Batch #302, Smoked Oud or Double vanilla in Bourbon sounds amazing. OK! The patchouli fragrance sounds beautiful too! Happy New Year to all and Thank you!

  • Gail and Mr. DeMarcado, you make me very curious! I adore the scent of oak barrels. One of my favorite furniture shops has a carpenter who makes custom pieces – chairs, frames, shelves – from cleverly disassembled barrels that were used for aging wine and spirits. The smell of the wood is fantastic.

I’m always the designated driver as I grew up in a “dry house” with no drinking and no alcohol around, so I have little experience with drinking. And I don’t drink wine as sulfites give me migraine. Even so I enjoy the smell of wine and spirits when they are enjoyed by my friends. And I love boozy smelling perfumes. 😀

All of the OK scents sound much much better than OK! I would most like to try SGO Batch #501. I adore sandalwood. Thank you for the review and for the generous draw. I’m in the US.

  • Ever since this new perfume house and concept debuted with a few other reviewers, I’ve been intrigued by OK Fine Fragrances. Now with Gail’s elucidating look at these fragrances, I’m keener than ever to get my nose on these. Gail’s description of the Amber as being otherworldly really sounds intriguing. As she says, usually amber dominant fragrances take on a gourmandish aspect, but here OK’s take on this note remains quite dark and resinous. Her descriptions of Smoked Oud, Santal, and the Patchouli were also quite apt and open your olfactory world to a new level of intrigue. It is hard making a choice, but I would love to try either the Amber, Smoked Oud, or Santal. Thanks to OK Fine Fragrances for their generosity! I’m in Oregon, USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

These have been on my list to try and reading your reviews of each one I don’t know how to choose which I’d like to try most. The Double Vanilla is the one that initially speaks to me because it sounds just cozily delicious but these all so sound interesting and unique that I am going to have to sample each of these for sure this year. Thank you for the review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • patrick_348 says:

I have been a designated driver once or twice, but the people I hang out with don’t drink much, so the opportunities have been few. (I myself do have one drink every night, though rarely more.) #401 Amber sounds the most interesting to me. I’ve only had mezcal once, but I liked the cocktail it was in I liked very much so that is the one I would like to win. The concept behind these scents seems so American, kind of free and infettered by tradition. And perfumery is similar to devising cocktails, isn’t it, in lookiing for balance and the power of flavors combining to make something they could not be individually. I am in the US, in NC.

  • I have been a designated driver. When my husband was in the Marines, he instituted a volunteer dd program that was fairly successful. All of these sound amazing, and I am not usually a fan of boozy scents. Gail has described them in such a way that I would like to win all of them! But probably 501 more than the others, just because I love Cardamom so much.

  • Aged for 52 days in golden rum seasoned barrel . I expect a fragrance that will blow me away !!!
Having a background in the fragrance industry does not mean you’ll succeed as independent /niche/indie house owner .Some will , others won’t , but i have a good feeling about Steve and Michael. There is some sort of positive vibe around them . Good luck guys !
    “PRO Patchouli” is my choice.
No i have never been a designated driver , for the past 10 years at least.
    Thanks for the draw.

This is such a marvellous idea! I don’t really drink much, and when I do, I drink red wine. But I still really love the smell of oak barrels, and anything that’s been kept in barrels for a while. The description of the Double Vanilla in Bourbon scent is just delicious, my mouth is almost salivating reading about it. Saying that it’s a scent that matures on the skin is very descriptive and I can’t wait to try it!

Now, about being a designated driver, that’s usually my role. I did it both on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve this time around. Like I said, I really don’t drink much.

Thanks for a lovely review of some very interesting scents. I’ll need to check them out as soon as possible!

I’d love to win the Vanilla scent. In Florida, US. Thanks!

  • I love that these fragrances are so unique. I have never heard of perfume being aged and love the idea. I too do not drink alcohol so I could use a bossy delight to take the place for the designated driver nights! I have been the DD on plenty of occasions. This is a tough choice between batch 101 vanilla and the batch 201 patchouli because I love vanilla and gourmand.
I must get my hand on these to test! I hope the word gets out about this up and starting and unique fragrance house.

My pick would be the batch #101 double vanilla in bourbon. Thanks for the chance!

I live in NC United States.

  • I have never been a designated driver. The fragrance I fancy is AMO Batch #401 Amber. I am an amber lover, and after seeing the notes, and learning that Mezcal will add smokiness to the sweetness, I will enjoy this (as will everyone in my vicinity). Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • citizenkage says:

They all sound fantastic and Gail’s writing and descriptions of each fragrance is on another level. I wish I could write like that. I’m really digging the idea of aging fragrance in oak barrels. I think it could add some new dimensions and textures to the scents. Really cool, unique idea. And yes I have been a DD on many occasions. If I were to win, I’d choose the Double Vanilla in Bourbon. FL, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

Gail, great review of OK Fine Fragrances. I love that all the fragrances have a boozy component to them and that they are aged in american oak barrels in micro batches to maintain consistency. If I win I would pick VBO. I have been a designated driver many times in my younger days. I am from the USA.

  • I’ve heard incredible things about these fragrances from other reviewers, and Gail’s review of VBO Double Vanilla reinforces that I’d love to get my nose on that first!

  • Very innovative touch in the creation of fine fragrances. VBO Batch #101 Double Vanilla sounds luscious after the American Oak treatment. This fragrance is a must-try for me whether I win it or not. – A designated driver on more occasions than I prefer

  • IvanVelikov says:

I have to say i do admire guys like Steve and Michael . Thinking more like a niche consumer, and less like a owner. Less about trends and flankers and more about artistry thinking is admirable.
Oak barrels aging no doubt makes their creations unique.Smile , make music , be happy and create more.Coffee fragrance will be nice too haha.
I do have a sweet tooth , i like patchouli and vetiver , so Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon is my choice.
    Top opportunity – thank you.

  • Love the description of Double Vanilla Bourbon!!! And the giveaway ends today – my birthday!
    I live in the USA.

  • Excellent review by Gail and I am ALWAYS the designated driver! I love the concept that the fragrances are aged in a barrel. I would love to win the Double Vanilla. Happy New Year and thanks for the generous giveaway! I live in the US!

  • Handcrafted fragrances aged in oak barrels? You got my attention.
Being independent in the fragrance industry has both advantages , and disadvantages. You can basically do what you want to do , but at the same time it’s harder to keep up the fragrances consistent , because of lack of ingredients and so on. I was wearing a lovely smokey and boozy fragrance by …. One other American indie brand , but the second bottle I got was so different compared to the first one I had to return it. They were not able to secure the same ingredients , and even though the fragrance was nice, it was way too different .
I hope OK Fragrances would be able to keep the consistency as much as possible.
I don’t drink , but I do enjoy boozy fragrances , and Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon is my choice.
Out of curiosity i do consider getting sample set.
I have to say bottles are nice. I like the look , and the vintage feel.
Quite often I’m just a driver, but not designated one , because I don’t drink.
    USA

  • I have to say I really like Steve and Michael story. To age fragrances is oak barrels . Now that’s what I call creativity. No doubt I will sample OK Fine Fragrances , because of their uniqueness.
We should have more people like them . Best wishes guys with the business.
I’d like to win Double Vanilla . Several types of vanilla, tonka beans and vetiver… say no more.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Enjoyed the article. I’d like to Try all their fragrances but will go with. VBO. The double vanilla. Thanks, Ca

  • I’m in the USA and would love to win the Oud. I have not tried this house but have had it on my radar. Very interesting concept. I like beer aged in bourbon casks. I like whisky aged in sherry casks. Why wouldn’t I love these? I was a designated driver before. One experience resulted in me breaking the jaw of a wrestler in college who was drunk and tried to take the keys from me and broke the window of my car.

  • m.r.everything says:

OK Fine Fragrances has been a brand that has had my interest for quite some time now… I remember seeing a post of when they were first launching earlier this year, I believe on Instagram. Why I haven’t purchased a bottle or two (or three) yet, has blown my mind… I have heard many great things from reviewers to regular fragrant friends on IG… I would definitely have to go with Batch 101 Double Vanilla in Bourbon first…. Then it would be a tough decision after that! Every single one of these fragrances sound delicious and intoxicating! I don’t drink that often, but at the same time, I don’t go out that often, so I am usually not a DD. I have been on occasion… but it is usually to family functions or things of that sort, so usually I am just driving family home. I will drink every now and then, but it will most likely be in the comfort of my own home, and even that is a rare occasion! Thank you Steve and Michael for this generous opportunity! Either way, I will be checking you guys out and getting a bottle in the future! Thank you Gail, for the great and perfectly timed review! It was a pleasure to read and you have made me want an OK fragrance even more now! Thank you Michelyn, for putting this all together, as always! I live in Delaware, US. Safe travels to everyone!

  • Really like the idea of a new indie brand offering a unique process of making fragrances … with one BIG if – if the blending , the ingredients and final results will make me say Wow. Performance should be good too.
Long time friendship, background in the sector , barrels aging – a lot of boxes are checked .
If I have to pick one Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon will be my choice. Vanilla and bourbon cake with coconut crumbs is what I imagined after reading Gail review. Pastry Chef in the house.
    Appreciate the giveaway campaign

Enjoyed the review although personally don’t see anything wrong with being a DD and possibly being responsible for saving lives. Really intrigued about these juices since hearing about them from Sebastian some months ago. I would like to try SGO batch#501 if I have the fortune of winning, thank you.

  • According to the article both guys should be extroverts , and that’s hard . It’s not easy nowadays to smile , to look happy and to do what YOU think you should do , and not going with the flow.I’m talking from a personal standpoint. Personally i do not care at all about others opinion , but that’s me.
I only hope the oak barrels will give all the fragrances strong boozy vibe .
PRO Batch # 201 ages real Patchouli in Golden Rum is my pick.
Patch and rum? I do admit I’m really excited for this one.
I’m a teetotaler , so driver yes , designated driver NO.
Already follow Cafleurebon, OK Fragrances and Gail Gross on Instagram.
    Thanks you

  • Smoked Oud has most everything I love, oud attar and bourbon! I’ve never heard of any other fragrance brands aging in barrels like these. Never been out drinking or been a DD, as I’m a terrible driver lol

  • Thank you everyone for your comments, great designated driver stories and for entering the draw. Good luck and best wishes for a Happy New Year.
