Joseph Quartana’s latest perfume Parfums Quartana Ierofante is the beginning of a new era in his creative path, one exploring the magic of healing and positive energy. Our first glimpse into this new trajectory conjures visionary elements of ancient Greek rituals and early space exploration. Joseph describes Ierofante as “a glimpse of that special golden place that exists inside each of us, where we originally come from and the source of all life on Earth. Only, to keep it modern, we go there on a rocket ship.”

The Hierophant tarot card meaning

Hierophant tarot card, wiki

Pafums Quartana Ierofante is a name of depth and mystery that can guide us to the headspace of this fascinating fragrance. The Ierofante or “Hierophant” is a figure in the tarot deck. It is often interpreted as an embodiment of immortality, taking the form of a teacher or guide. The Hierophant (Ierofante in Italian) is a symbol for finding one’s way during challenging times and has associations of ascension to something greater. In the world of ancient Greece, the Hierophant was one of the elect members of a sacred priesthood who was able to officiate during the annual Eleusinian mysteries, secretive rituals conducted by the cults of Demeter and Persephone celebrating the return of life and springtime. The feel of this fragrance is indeed a powerful force of energy, motion, and celebration.

What, in our modern world, can convey the awe, power, hope, and renewal. For many, including my family, that great mystery is outer space. My grandfather was the lead electrical and mechanical engineer on all the Mercury launches. The rockets did not go until he signed off on them. He also worked all the Gemini launches from the NASA control room. While our family has a special relationship, all of humanity can understand this deep connection to man’s reach for the stars. We all share in the wonder, the excitement, and the energy involved. Perfumer Luca Maffei has created a unique jet-fuel accord. Ierofante opens with a vaporous upward lift sufficiently vigorous to open one’s sinuses in a blast of heliotrope-edged jet fuel. Industrial suede smoke rolls out after takeoff. The sweet burn of ignition is cleverly attained through a deft touch of flinty nutmeg over the jet-fuel and suede accelerants.

Parfums Quartana Ierofante is one of those rare fragrances that stimulates both the mind and the senses. It is intellectually exciting and full of visceral pleasures. After the raw power of the opening, fruity-resinous styrax pyrogene merges with a full-toned leather accord. Styrax pyrogen has a uniquely smoky aspect that adds to the normally balsamically sweet material. At this point in the journey Ierofante turns knowing and sensuous. We are softening down, relaxing, and taking in the full beauty of the mysteries of life. In a brilliant and innovative move, the structure of Parfums Quartana Ierofante flips our expectations. The fragrance becomes lighter as it dries down. Base notes of Haitian vetiver, smooth cashmeran, and gauzy amber leave us floating in zero gravity. On my skin, the scent has become gentle, intimate, and inviting. What a journey! From a daring lift of jet-fuel to the gentle rocking of the cosmos, the journey seems to arrive at a wisdom found by those lucky few who have actually been outside our world. After seeing Earth from space, Astronaut James Irwin of the Apollo 15 Program commented: That beautiful, warm, living object looked so fragile, so delicate, that if you touched it with a finger it would crumble and fall apart. Seeing this has to change a man”.

Notes: Suede, Gasoline Accord, Nutmeg, Styrax Pyrogene, Smoky Leather, Golden Amber, Cashmeran, Vetiver

Bottle my own, opinions my own.

You had me at gasoline note! I love the journey that this perfume goes on and it reminds me of some of the images from the Webb telescope that came out recently. How we can see the leftovers of cosmic dust from billions of years ago. I imagine the violent explosion of a collapsing star and the beautiful, peaceful aftermath.
I am very intrigued by the opening of this composition where fruity and sweet notes interplay with smoke and gasoline.

    I am in California, USA.

This is a sublime offering. I was in love by the name alone upon hearing about it. Knowing the connotations between the Elusenian Mysteries and the rocket fuel theme really struck a chord with me and my fascination with Jack Parsons & how he married both those worlds together. This fragrance is not what I anticipated but I loved it more than I expected upon sampling. The drydown is soft and addicting. Just pure comfort.

  • As a fan of unique fragrances, I’m drawn to the jet fuel accord in Ierofante. I do enjoy Parfums Quartana fragrances. One of my favs is Wolfsbane. Congratulations on being a Finalist and thank you for a fabulous opportunity to win a bottle of Ierofante. Mich USA

  • I am really intrigued by this fragrance because Rachel mentions that it gets lighter as it dries down. I’m really interested by the description. From an intense blast off, to weightlessness. I wonder what the scent bubble on this is like. Is it one of those that you have to spray a few hours before going out or is it pleasant enough at the start? Really curious to see what kind of gasoline this smells like.
    Cheers from Illinois, USA!

  • I would really love to take this journey, and the notes sound amazing. I love the unique direction fragrances are going in. Smokey Leather, Amber and Suede, I need.

    Indiana USA

  • This sunds like an interesting journey of a fragrance. Rachel mentioned it flipping the script halfway through the wearing, which I find intriguing. I am most interested in that gasoline accord. The scent of petrol can be powerful yet captvating so I’m eager to see what effect it has here. I live in NC, USA.

I like how they described this fragrance to feeling like having a powerful force of energy, motion, and celebration.

What intrigued me is how the sweet burn of ignition is cleverly attained through a deft touch of flinty nutmeg over the jet-fuel and suede. Sounds interesting.

I like that this fragrance is one of those rare fragrances that stimulates both the mind and the senses. Interesting.

  • I’m really intrigued by the gasoline note! I love the connection that this fragrance draws between ancient Greek mysteries and the forward-looking field of space travel; I’m so curious as to how this plays out when wearing this fragrance. I am located in New York. Thank you 🙂

Joseph Quartana is a genius & hands down responsible for so many incredible fragrances. Fragrances such as my #1 all time favorite “Mandrake” & many other incredible creations. Dang near everything this man touches turns to gold. Wolfsbane, Nappa Noir, Mandrake, Poppy Soma, Urban Tropicana, Digitalis & the list just goes on & on… What I love the most about Joseph is how humble & appreciative he is. He genuinely cares & takes the time to read & answer his fans/supporters comments. He also takes his time (years to be exact) to create each one of his masterpieces & it shows in the outstanding quality and craftsmanship. No wonder he’s constantly winning awards & up for awards etc.. He’s such a gift to the world! Especially the world of fragrance! This Ierofante is screaming my name & I can’t wait to sample it. Putting two very incredibly talented people like Joseph Quartana & Luca Maffei together can only produce another finely tuned masterpiece to add to the Quartana portfolio!

  • I enjoyed reading this review of Parfums Quartana Ierofante by Rachel. The description by Rachel, via words and pictures, aligns beautifully with the brand’s goal of “a glimpse of that special golden place that exists inside each of us, where we originally come from and the source of all life on Earth. Only, to keep it modern, we go there on a rocket ship.” From the mysteries of Tarot cards to those of the outer space. Enjoyed reading about Rachel’s grandfather’s illustrious history with space exploration too. I am quite curious about how this perfume is composed and how it smells like. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • Ierofante sounds like a fragrance that celebrates renewal and awe-inspiring mystery with a broad palette of unique scents. The gasoline accord paired with spice, smoky leather and resinous styrax does conjure a futuristic hope for tomorrow. The rocket ship theme is fascinating and certainly one I’ve never encountered before in a perfume. MD, USA

  • As a huge fan of Dior Fahrenheit, anything that has a ‘gasoline accord’ is obviously going to remind you of the classic Dior scent. Would love to see how this Quartana scent utilizes that most intriguing note. Thank you for the opportunity – Southern CA here.

  • As someone who is fascinated by space, I am intrigued by Parfums Quartana Ierofante. I enjoy fragrances with gasoline vibe, Fahrenheit being one of the iconic ones, and I wonder how a jet fuel note may smell like. I am in US.

I am in awe of the inspiration that drives modern creatives and perfumers to create their fragrances. Ierofante, influenced by both tarot cards and space travel is certainly something special. I love that Luca Maffei has used a gasoline note in his creation. I am here for that.
    I live in the USA.

  • Jet-fueled accord!?!? I’m all in! I need to get my nose on this! Glad I found Cafleurebon to discover these unique fragrances.

  • Fantastic review by Rachel. To be honest this is the first time I read something about Joseph Quartana but it seems like an amazing brand. I love that Lerofante has a huge role of the leathery accords and it seems like it is going to be a bomb, but it actually softens downs and makes it more deeper and enigmatic. I would love to try this one.

  • Ierofante sounds like it could literally take off in years to come. Gasoline seems to open my sinus every time. Such a great feeling, when I’m clear I feel fresh and clean.

Even better on the dry down my wife will love me even more when the fragrance feels inviting and intimate.

    Thanks from the USA

  • It was very interesting to read up about the backstory behind the fragrance, but mostly the Jet-Fuel accord. This is probably the first time I’ve heard of this note, along with Styrax pyrogen. Overall, this is a very unique and interesting fragrance, and I’m very interested to see how the notes blend and dry down. From TX, USA.

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thanks for the beautiful writing, Rachel. And congrats to Quartana and Luca Maffei for the A+OA nomination.
The industrial and inorganic accords always interest me. Ierofante’s development from heavy to light sounds even more intriguing! (Another cosmos fragrance comes to my mind, which has influenced my aesthetics fundamentally: Nebula by Oliver & Co. I would love to contrast how they differ in interpreting the theme of the cosmos!)
    Greetings from San Mateo, California.

  • Rachel’s familial connection to the Gemini launches is really cool and an unexpected highlight of this excellent review. Parfums Quartana Ierofante is an unusual perfume, centered around that curious jet-fuel accord, but it nevertheless sounds both wearable and very successful in rendering the space-launch theme throughout its progression. Also, that whiplash from bawdy, fumes-and-smoke opening to light, spacey skin-scent sounds remarkable. Would love to try it.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I found it quite unexpected to conjure up an olfactory image of Ierofante from gasoline accord, especially considering that this substance was not even close to being invented during the ancient Greek era from which this mythology originates. True perfumery art!
Sending my love to the fragrance from DE, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeup Rachel!

I love the way this review connects the old world Hierophant to the modern day lead electrical & mechanical lead Engineer at NASA. Both are positions of power, wisdom and exploration.

This scent has such beautiful notes. I love how the opening is just a blast of leather and gasoline, moving into styrex pyrogene, with it’s smoky sweet quality, all reminding me of the wonderful scent of fuel. The comforting drydown of amber and woodsis an ode to the sweet warmth at the sight of our planet from the cold depths of space.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Vintage Petrol, styrax and suede has to be one of the most interesting smells to inter the lexicon. I’m eager to feel this artist interpretation in the air. Michigan USA

  • Parfums Quartana Ierofante has to be a fragrance that is both interstellar during lift off and sensually nirvana at dry down. What a fantastic perfume. I am interested in finding out how many transitions Parfums Quartana Ierofante would have on my skin. Thank you for the opportunity. Greetings from the USA.

  • johnmadison says:

Parfums Quartana Lerofante sounds like a sexy masterpiece. I am so curious of this jet-fueled accord prescribed by its notes composing something reminiscent of gasoline. The nutmeg and suede notes sound like it would complement this scent journey magnificently.

I read ‘Smokey nutmeg accelerants’ and was instantly sold. Trying to burn bright and loud if I win this one – almost sounds akin to Timothy Han ‘On The Road’ with the exhaust smells. This sounds like an absolute treat that I would be honored to win. Would ship to Pennsylvania, USA,

Very nice review Rachel! I thought Ierofante sounded very interesting with how Rachel describes it as a mix of intellectual and sensual – with a raw and powerful opening of fruit and leather that tones down into a softer and more sensuous journey. I love perfumes full of strong contrasts so I thought Ierofante sounded very very interesting to me! I live in the U.S.
