Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand Elixir Review+ Summer Cedar and Citrus Draw

Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand review

Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale

2005’s Isphahan – later Isfarkand – is a comme il faut classical cologne created  in concert with creative director Linda Pilkington. Isfarkand takes a big jug of citrus juices and splashes it over a bed of cedar, peppery spice and vetiver. Last year, as part of Ormonde Jayne’s Elixirs line, Isfarkand got a new look. Oh, he’s still the same suave scat’s meow he was 15 years ago, but now his gaze is a bit more direct, and the smile with which he greets you maybe just a tad wolfish.

Described by Ormonde Jayne as “a revived formula poured at extract strength” with a more concentrated cedar note” and a “citrusy charge,” Isfarkand Elixir brings a bit of dark-browed intensity to its original chipper charm. The new formula amps up the woods and adds some edge with a dose of iso super e that shadows the cedar without replicating it, giving the wood a multidimensional, modern quality, while also lending a slightly alcoholic, gin-like tinge. Pink pepper, which lends Isfarkand senior a big belt of spice in the top, is absent, giving space to the woody and citrus notes to emerge immediately as dominant aromas.

Matthew Goode in ITV’s Downton Abbey

The first spritz of Isfarkand Elixir brings a sparkly spray of lime soda – not syrupy like 7-Up, but dry and effervescent, the smell lime squeezed into a tall chilled glass of club soda. Bergamot is there, too, adding a hint of bitterness, like a gin ricky without the booze. And, in case you had any doubts of Isfarkand Elixir’s pedigree, the unmistakable woody-earthy-citrus Ormonde Jayne accord comes in right behind the opening notes.  Because Isfarkand Elixir hugs the skin as soon as it hits, it may seem as if it is soon fading away. But turn your wrist slightly, and it motors back, cedar out front one moment, lime-bergamot overtaking the next. Elixir is constructed largely out of dry but bright notes: the fresh citrus rind aroma of the top, a handful of chartreuse moss in the middle. Even green vetiver in the base is stripped of its customary moist-oily quality, leaving its characteristic pungent, new root smell.

Refreshing, upbeat and unobtrusively elegant, the original Isfarkand always felt to me the sort of easy, elegant fragrance the posher Dapper Dans of London might wear to the Savile Club or the Garrick, those traditional outposts of yesteryear stateliness and quiet upper-class warfare. Isfarkand Elixir, with its emphasis on a freshened up, faceted cedar, is still recognizable, but, with the vetiver toned down and the spice spliced, it now feels more accessible to Dapper Danielles. On a still, breezeless summer day, Isfarkand Elixir manages to be the seemingly impossible: a deeply woody scent perfect for the heat, with just the right balance of zesty notes and such a lightness of touch that it feels as weightless as a white silk shirt.

Notes: Lime, mandarin, bergamot, iso-e super, cedar, vetiver, moss.

  • A “citrus charge” certainly intrigues me. I would love a summery, dapper, elegant fragrance! The only Ormonde Jayne fragrance I’ve tried I hated. It was really heavy on the jasmine sambac and reminded me of old ladies. Still, curious to try this one though! USA

  • Lime soda opening with wooody-earthy-citrus Ormonde Jayne accords at extract strength sounds fantastic! Love that black bottle photo as well. My favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrance is none other than the exquisite Ormonde Man. Regards from the USA.

  • Lauryn’s review is spellbinding and quite intriguing. I’ve heard many great things about Ormonde Jayne and Lauryn’s review adds to that immensely. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • This really resonanted with me once I saw the picture of Benedict Cumberbatch! While it sounded very masculine to me initially, I was very happy to see the conclusion of the review which described how it would also work for females too. I haven’t tried anything from the house before, but I’ve had my eye on the Osmanthus for a long time now. I’m in the USA; thanks for the giveaway!

  • Sounds like an amazing summer fragrance. Love the refreshing and upbeat description with woody touches in the base. Haven’t tried any from this brand. Hope this will be mu first. Love the packaging! IL, USA

  • I like her comment on the wall fish green. My favorite down at the line is Ormond woman basic but true. But I like her comment on the wall fish green. My favorite down at the line is Ormond woman basic but true. But mostly the photos with this article were just great.

  • I already liked the original Isfarkand and I think I’d like to try this with the “citrusy charge”. US

  • The best kind of fragrance for me! I am intrigued most by what the main differences are between the elixirs and their predecessors. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • I like the black bottles, a nice change up! And who wouldn’t want to smell like Benedict Cumberbatch! USA

    This is what struck me:

“The first spritz of Isfarkand Elixir brings a sparkly spray of lime soda – not syrupy like 7-Up, but dry and effervescent, the smell lime squeezed into a tall chilled glass of club soda.” (AHHHHHHHHHH). And: “On a still, breezeless summer day, Isfarkand Elixir manages to be the seemingly impossible: a deeply woody scent perfect for the heat, with just the right balance of zesty notes and such a lightness of touch that it feels as weightless as a white silk shirt.” BEAUTIFUL!

I have yet to experience an Ormonde Jayne fragrance, but just from YouTube reviews, I have to say that I’m looking forward to getting my nose on Montabaco. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Trinity33 says:

I’m really interested in seeing how the iso super E affects the quality of the cedar. And anything that has a lime soda quality and gin-like tinge sounds like a perfect summer scent to me. I really like OJ Woman. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • chrisskins says:

ooooh, I am an iso-e super excited fan, even when it’s controversial. Excited that this scent is depicted as a woody summer; sounds like a perfect unisex. One I’d like to share with my sons or maybe not. (Okay, probably.) I live in the USA.

  • I’m interested in the “pungent, new root smell.” I like fragrances that are unique and this fits the bill. Citrus ~ lime and mandarin, with moss sounds great for the warmer summer months. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Loved this review and wow Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Craig on one British page
Of all the Ormonde Jayne I tested never tried this. Count me in for this

  • Great attention to detail that achieve here than most YouTuber who reviewing fragrances. Rather than telling the reader the notes like bergamot which make a lot of casual fragrances wearer doesn’t know what bergamot smell like. The author describe it using resemblance of lime club soda and stay at citrusy woody vibe . It similar to the execution of royal elixir also made by osmonde Jayne. Burst of peppery soon mellow down into something pleasant and gentleman like. Comment from USA.

  • My favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrance has been Champaca. From what Lauryn has said, Isfarkand Elixir sounds like a more feminine version, that sounds intriguing. I am in the USA

  • I think cedar is one of the signature notes of the OJ line and Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand Elixir is not only an extract version but also has prominent cedar note. My fav. from OJ is Nawab of Oudh. USA

  • diegopineda says:

What strikers me the most about Lauryn’s review is the comparison of the fragrance to a lime soda pop but more like a dry and effervescent drink.
I have never tried a ormond jayne fragrance before so I don’t have a favorite.

  • Jake Dauod says:

Sadly I don’t have a favorite fragrance from the line as I haven’t gotten my nose on any of them, but I would love to eventually sample some perfumes from the brand. As for Isfarkand Elixer, the opening of woods and citrus strike me the most. Aside from that, there are very few notes listed, so it seems very straight forward, and I like that the fragrance contains all the elements of a fresh fragrance that you could want. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Lauryn did a great job in describing Isfarkand. I haven’t, yet, tried any of Ormonde Jayne offerings but hopefully will try one soon. With citrus, cedar, and vetiver, it seems to be a delightful fragrance in a lovely bottle, I may add. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

I’ve loved Tolu, but that’s the only one that I have from Ormonde Jayne. Lauryn’s review is a knockout in terms of truly letting us know what this fragrance has in store for us. The images of posh clubs and British movie stars in iconic roles is so delicious. What a marvelous review and generous draw. Thank you for both. I’m in the USA

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Lauryn’s description of Isfarkand Elixir is done very well imo. Never tried it or the old iteration, so Lauryn was a big help. As a lover of citrus frags, sometimes I run into the right fit for the evening and Isfarkand Elixir sounds like it would be perfect – citrus opening, but woods and iso-e super (always grabs attention) ready to pounce.
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • Haha love that Daniel Craig pic in the intro. It’s true, I often think of James Bond with I smell Iso-E. And although my current favourite from OJ is Montabaco Intensivo (another Iso-E blend), I’m digging the addition of lime in the Isfarkand line. Love to hear that the notes come off a bit dry too. There are some wet wood/vetiver fragrances that I just can’t stomach sometimes, so keeping things on the dry side is another plus. Can’t go wrong with a good rooty vetiver for the sophisticated and well-read gentleman. USA

  • You had me a burst of citruses but Zesty sold me. Lime is a favorite note of mine in the summer and cedar smells so good. It sound like Isfarkand Elixir is a fragrance I would wear daily. It also doesn’t sound office offensive either which is important to me. All in all I’m really excited about this fragrance. I love her Ormonde Jayne Man. Beautiful cedar fragrance. Thanks for a beautiful draw as always. In the USA.

  • abbie road says:

I need this for my husband – it sounds delicious. The sparkly spray of lime soda caught my ear and is something I’d love on him. I’m also a sucker for a beautiful citrus vetiver fragrance. Just gorgeous. I live in the usa.

  • patrick_348 says:

My reaction is “Great to have a citrus summer fragrance that isn’t like all the other ones and that has some depth and complexity!” I have never tried an Ormonde Jayne scent, but this sounds like a great place to start. In the US, in NC.

  • I’ve only ever tried the original Ormonde Jayne (and loved it). This sounds so fresh and earthy. I really like vetiver and love that it’s one of the main ingredients in the drydown.
    I live in the USA.

  • herman2625 says:

I see the reviewer said this frag is dark-browed! I always love the mood so much!

  • Beautiful review!! Thanks!
Deeply woody scent with citrus, moss and vetiver- sounds very very yummy for hot days. Oh, I need it. I like Ormond Man very much.

  • Uncle1979 says:

To me Ormonde Jayne almost equals Ta’if Elixir. I was blown away by the smell of a client in my bakery, and asked him about the fragrance his wearing. He only said “It’s a dark bottle Ormonde Jayne I bought from Harrods in London, but I don’t remember the name”. Smells very, and I mean very similar to a traditional Persian cake with rose, cardamom, saffron, almonds , orange water and dates. It’s called Persian Pavlova cake, but more people know it as Persian Love Cake.
I bought it of course, $$$ well spent , and when I finish the bottle, I’ll buy another one.
I have to say I really liked Lauryn Beer take on Isfarkand , like she said perfectly balanced woody fragrance, sprinkled with zesty notes.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign. In US

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

A woody fragrance that’s elegant and good for the heat…something I’d really like to add to my rotation. Appreciate Lauryn’s review and the opportunity for the giveaway. I’ve never tried anything from this house. -Virginia, USA

  • Summer is here and we all need citrus fragrances especially the ones that are “elegant fragrance the posher Dapper Dans of London might wear to the Savile Club or the Garrick” as said by Lauryn.
So far I have not tried anything from Ormonde Jayne but heard really good things about Ormonde Jayne Man. Thanks for the draw. USA

  • A wolfish smile sounds very playful and a bit dangerous. I love the Ormonde Jayne line. The notes sound perfect for a hot summer night in the mountains.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Refreshing, woody, fresh and with gin, I’m excited to try the high class Isfarkand.
As for Ormonde Jayne fragrances , I told this story a couple of times, but I’ll do it again, I had Tolu back in late 2014 , but my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house.
From the 6-7 Ormonde Jayne I have smelled , Tolu is the best one.
Cafleurebon, Lauryn and Eden Square , wonderful draw we have here.
    Cheers from VA

  • Camille Sheil says:

I like how light this fragrance feels. Airy but strong. As one of the pictures suggests, it sounds a bit like a James Bond type, but is also got a picture of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Especially when mentioning the smile.

Great to hear that the reformulation is nearly the same. I’ve never sampled one from Ormonde Jayne but have been wanting to try a few very much. They are the favorites of some of the YouTubers that I watch. Soon!

Thanks for the opportunity! I live in New Hampshire USA!

  • Lime Soda opening sounds interesting. I’d like o try this out and have the chance to own a bottle.
Sounds like a good feeling fragrance. Thanks, Ca

  • Vetiver, lots of citruses, freshness and elegance , summer is coming after all .
Tolu is my favorite Ormonde Jayne , such a luxurious scent. Everyone should if not own it , at least smell it.
Thanks to Lauryn , and the rebranded new Eden Square.

  • I feel so thirsty after reading that. I’m intrigued that the scent is described as dry!

  • Thanks Lauryn for this interesting review. I enjoyed it.
“Citrus charge” with iso-e super and oily vetiver sounds very great for this summer days. I like Ormonde Jayne perfumes they have their own signature, especially I like Nawab of Oudh.

  • wallygator88 says:

    Thanks for the review Lauryn.

I sort of don’t know what to think about this fragrance, because it sounds fairly simple in it’s composition, in the sense that these are a fairly common set of notes.

I haven’t smelt anything from this house, unfortunateyl.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • WaltherP99 says:

Isfarkand Elixir i have smelled, and to me is the one fragrance from Elixir line, that differentiates the most from the original. Picture of Daniel Craig is well picked , Isfarkand Elixir do leans both masculine and a bit old school .
Proud of owning Frangipani Made to Measure in 50% concentration in custom bottle , and i feel like i own a bespoke perfume.Pure parfum versions they called Made to Measure.
Thank you Eden Square and CaFleurebon for this draw , and of course Lauryn for the nice review.
    USA

  • I don’t own any Ormonde Jayne as I’m relatively new to the hobby but this article has got my attention. I do like woody scents and the effervescence from citruses makes a good match for a summer fragrance as Lauryn mentions feels as weightless as a white silk shirt. Reader from Los Angeles USA

  • doveskylark says:

I love that the lime is so charged in this fragrance. The citrus note with the cedar sounds perfect for the summer. I love that we can keep dapper on the hottest of days.
    I like Ormande Jayne Man.
    I live in the USA.

  • I like the idea of a lime forward fragrance that isn’t syrupy sweet, but tart and refreshing. I haven’t tried any from Ormonde Jayne, so no favorite from this house. I’m located in Montana, USA. Thanks!

  • IvanVelikov says:

Isfarkand Elixir I’m sure is everything you don’t expect to smell.Enigmatic , manly fragrances I appreciate . If Lauryn thinks Isfarkand Elixir fits Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale , for sure it will fit me too.
My personal favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrances are Taif , Ambre Royal and Tolu. It’s hard to pick one .Thank you. In US

  • I haven’t tried any of the Elixirs but I look forward to doing so. The description that really called to me was “deeply woody scent perfect for the heat.” I like woody & oriental fragrances but find them less appealing in over 100 degree heat. I love both OJ Woman and Man. Thank you for the draw & review. I’m in the US.

  • Classic high quality fragrances I adore , dry and bright , fresh citrus , and not earthy vetiver, I need to try Isfarkand Elixir
Don’t have yet a full bottle of Ormonde Jayne, but from the three samples that I bought
    Tolu > Vanille d’Iris > Frangipani.
    Nice opportunity, thank you. USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Lauryn, what strikes me about Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand Elixir is your skill at describing every detail throughout the life of the fragrance with such skill is truly captivating. A fizzy and effervescent lime and club soda along with bergamot and mandarin for a citrus blast contrasting with cedar and transitioning to vetiver and oakmoss combo sounds so uplifting and refreshing. I don’t have a favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrance because I haven’t tried anything from this house. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Alex Lukaszczyk says:

I’m a fan of the original Isfarkan, so I’m excited to see how much the woody notes are amplified as per Lauryn’s review. I would love to spritz this on before a long walk in the woods near my home. My favourite OJ frag is Montabaco.

  • The fact that Ormonde Jayne lauches a citrus fragrance is intriguing because of its refined use of ISO E Super. It sounds great for spring and summer nights. My favorites are Montabaco EDP and Nawab of Oudh, cant decide between them lol. Regards from the USA
