Post WW I, the world is being deconstructed and remade in new rhythms. Jazz makes discords that dance; in the new machine age, Deco fashions geometry into futuristic glamour; O’Keefe canvases melt mountains into shadows and de Lempicka paints women into statuesque Galateas. Even golden boy Jay Gatsby is a remade man, old sport, an invention of the times. In this new age, abstract is all the rage, and nothing is what it was.

It makes perfect sense, then, that Ormonde Jayne’s Gatsby 22, is an abstraction, a jazz riff on Jay Gatsby set at just that moment when the sun sinks, the afterglow of its heat radiating into the night party’s glitter. Linda Pilkington’s latest is not your typical Gatsby-inspired fragrance; there are no champagne notes, no aromas of Long Island shoreline and driftwood, no diamond-flashing florals. Rather, it is a sleek, urbane citrus cocktail, gleaming as a blond bob, angular as high cheekbones, and keen as a well-placed bon mot.

Ormonde Jayne Gatsby 22 plays with tempos, alternating scintillating citrus and pink pepper top notes with later, smooth baselines of leather and vetiver. Gatsby 22 flings open the door on a band in full swing: the first spray brings a mouth-puckering squeeze of lemon, green-tinged and bitter, rounded out with bergamot blaring like an olfactory brass section. Osmanthus comes up rather quickly, adding a complementary fruity-floral note that softens the edges just a bit, but a rather frisky, fruity pink pepper foxtrots right up behind it and bounces the fragrance back to sharp. For a few minutes, the beat is bouncy; staccato hits of lemon and pepper volleying with something woody and clean – possibly ambroxan – while the osmanthus joins with a hint of violet that emerges. The coolness and subtlety of the violet works a treat, here; it adds a slender quietness that starts to head the perfume towards a more deliberate pace.

Sampled afresh, Gatsby 22 is a summery, urbane fragrance, quite modern in feel: a 1920’s man seen through a 21st century lens. It is in the later stages that this fragrance feels most like an oblique biography of Jay Gatsby. Velvety vetiver and a touch of driving glove leather announce a more masculine direction, while a drop or two of orange blossom act as a scented silk square carefully placed in the breast pocket. But except for the vetiver, the later notes never become overt; they remain close to the skin, their backs turned like guests in the far reaches of a large room while the vetiver steers the lemon and bergamot combo out on to the dancefloor.

Jay Gatsby (Leonardo diCaprio) and Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) 2013 “The Great Gatsby”

In its dry down, Gatsby 22 gives off aromatic classic barbershop vibes with the arrival of some soapy, clean musk. On me, though, the flowers, particularly violet, become more noticeable the longer I wear it, and the soapy, cologne quality gradually dissipates in favour of a transparent woodiness. It’s peppy, zingy, and yet also a little remote. I can’t quite put a finger on it, but I get a sense of detachment from this perfume, the same way I often do from expensive Italian colognes: that impeccable, tailored quality that says come close but not closer. It’s perfect as a signature for Jay Gatsby.

Ormonde Jayne’s Gatsby 22 is zingy, yet smooth and would not smell out of place behind the wheel of Gatsby’s Rolls-Royce or on the neck of a present-day Jordan Baker. Grab your glad rags, spritz on some Ormonde Jayne Gatsby 22, and head out to New Egg. The heat is rising, trombones are wailing, and Jay Gatsby’s party is just getting started.

Notes: Bergamot, Sicilian lemon, pink pepper, osmanthus, violet, orange blossom, vetiver, leather accord, tonka bean, musk.

Disclaimer: bottle of Ormonde Jayne Gatsby 22 very generously gifted to me by Ormonde Jayne. My opinions, as always, are my own.

I’m excited to see how Jay Gatsby would be translated into a modern day fragrance, as seen through a 21st century lens. I don’t recall trying any fragrances from Ormande Jayne in the past. I’d love to see Jay Gatsby played by Timothee Chalamet. I live in Maryland USA.

Gatsby 22 I’m sure is…. everything you don’t expect it to be .Zingy freshness, suede, and slight woody feel , sounds fantastic . Enigmatic , yet classy fragrances like Gatsby 22 I appreciate .
Obviously it clicked well with Lauryn Beer, feels like it will click with me too.
My personal favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrances are Taif , Ambre Royal and Tolu.
Leonardo DiCaprio was perfect in The Great Gatsby, if it was up to me, I would’ve cast him again
Thank you Lauryn , and Europerfumes

I love Lauryn’s review describing how its a citrus cocktail. This gives me the impression that it would be a good date night fragrance in a classy setting. I have tried and loved Ormonde Jayne Champaca, which is amazing for celebrations. I feel that Ian Somerhalder would make a great Gatsby!!!

  • Thank you Lauryn for a vivid description of Ormonde Jayne Gatsby 22. I liked the associative descriptions like orange blossom drops acting as a scented silk square 🙂 I’ve only tried Ormonde Man from the house and loved it and would love to win Gatsby 22. I would still nominate Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Jay Gatsby. I’m in USA

  • What struck me the most was the comparison to expensive Italian perfumes. My fave OJ is Orris Noir. US

  • Post WW I really was a transformational time. In addition to the events Lauryn mentioned (jazz, art deco, etc), it also saw the rise of an aspirational consumer culture as reflected in the burgeoning film industry, Jay Gatsby is a perfect example of aspirational consumption and a desire to be accepted by the elite. I suppose a modern-day Gatsby would be someone who reinvented himself as an Influencer on TikTok showing is photos from his time on Mykonos.

Gatsby 22 sounds like a fun unisex fragrance with a zingy citrus opening and a nice balance of feminine florals and masculine wood and vetiver notes. The sense of remote elegance Lauryn mentioned is interesting and perfect in keeping with the image of the fictional Gatsby. Favorite OJ is Ormonde Woman. MD, USA.

  • Hi,

What strikes most about Lauryn’s review of Gatsby 22 is the opening being described as lemon and pepper volleying w/ something woody and clean. I’m personally a fan of citrust and woods. My favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrance is Montabaco. I would personally cast Benedict Cumberbatch to play Jay Gatsby in 2022.

    Regards from the East Coast.

  • I love how Lauryn’s review captured both modern and classic elements captured in this Gatsby 22! I would love the chance to try it. My favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrance is Ormonde Elixir. I’m in MN, USA.

  • What a name, Gatsby 22
The soft Mediterranean melody , going through Jay Gatsby’s Long Island prism is echoing in my ears , like a song with bright citruses, leather, vetiver and cozy leather.I’m eager to try Gatsby 22
As for Ormonde Jayne fragrances , I told the story multiple times , but I’ll do it again, I had Tolu back in late 2014 , but my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house. From the 10-12 Ormonde Jayne I have smelled until now, Tolu is still my favorite. The bigger 120ml bottle is back in my collection
I’d like to keep Leonardo diCaprio as Gatsby
    Thank you for the opportunity

I loved the comment that there is a sense of detachment or distance– “come close, but not closer.” Such a beautiful way to put the sensation it gives off! All of Lauryn’s insights, however, are wonderful! Namely–that it feels like a 21st century lens on a 1920’s man and that it “plays with tempos.” Such well written prose! I’m excited to try this some day. I have many OJ loves, such as her juicy Osmanthus, but the original OJ Woman and Man pairing are still my favorites. Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US.

  • This line sold it for me: “a 1920’s man seen through a 21st century lens.” I can’t wait to try this out! I really like Ormonde Man. I would cast Daniel Craig. NV, USA.

  • Love the Ormonde Jayne scents.
This review makes me want to dress up again, instead of the casual work and play wear. Maybe get a convertible and go for a late night drive with my wife.
    Oklahoma USA

  • I loved the comparison with music structure. Good way to describe, of course, the notes have to match up. New Jersey, USA

  • This sounds awesome! Gatsby should smell of pure class for a young, rich bachelor. Plus I love all fougere’s. It’s interesting how you pulled more of the florals on your skin, like the violet. I would imagine the vetiver and leather would pull stronger on my skin. My favorite Ormonde Jayne is Isfarkand. I would like to see Adam Driver cast as Gatsby in 2022. Thank you for the draw! US.

  • I think that Tom Hiddleston would make a good Gatsby. I love the notes listed, interested to know if it is very masculine or if it could work as a unisex fragrance.

  • I enjoyed reading Lauryn’s review describing how Gatsby 22 is a citrus perfume. It seems to be a very elegant perfume to be used in classy settings. I have not tried any Ormonde Jayne perfumes. Not sure who would make a great Gatsby!!! I like some Italian perfumes (Fendi), so comparison to Italian perfumes was interesting. Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

  • Love Jay Gatsby and how Lauryn incorporated the Fragrance into modern day. The notes sound wonderful and are unisex. Leo was the best Jay Gatsby. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I love how the review talks about tempo: one of the special things about perfume is how it moves through space and time. On a less intellectual level, I love masculine leaning citrus-y colognes! As for who I’d like to see play Gatsby…oh boy, that’s a tough one. Maybe Robert Pattison? He could bring a cool distance to the part, I think.
    I’m in the USA.

  • I have not had the privilege of owning and Ormond Jayne scents. I have always heard such good things about their perfumes. I would love to try this Gatsby inspired piece. In maryland.

  • Ormonde Jayne’s Gatsby 22 seems like a sleek citrusy composition that has elements of classic perfumery including that barbershop vibe. One of the signature notes of the brand is osmanthus and it makes an appearance in this fragrance, too. My fav from Ormonde Jayne is Nawab of Oudh. I am in USA.

  • Really enjoyed Lauren’s review of Gatsby 22.
Peppy zingy and like a good Italian cologne. My choice for Gatsby in 2022 is Rege-Gene Page.
Favorite Ormonde Jayne is Ormonde Woman

  • I love that Ormonde has created another blend with osthmanthus, one of my favorites. And I always like citrus and violet together.
My fav OJs are Ambre Royal, Osthmanthus Elixer, Champaca. I’m excited to try this!!!
    Opalbear California .

Peppy, Zingy, and Violet all call to mind Hiram Green’s Vivacious (a spectacular fragrance) – Luaryn’s description is certainly enticing!

Favorite of the house is Champaca – my wife’s as well.

Ryan Gosling for me. Each character he plays has a distinct, genuine aloofness and personally-unbeknownst innocent charm that is held in his facial features – regardless of their personality and confidences.

    California based. Appreciate the opportunity.

  • Big fan of Ormonde Jayne. Typically I am not captured by alot of citrus scents but this my be one I could love. I am intrigued by the osmanthus and violet.

  • Lauryns review has proven to show just how magical a perfume can be when modern elements are intertwined with things of the past. Gatsby 22 sounds remarkable. Absolutely adore bergamot and orange blossom and would be enthralled if given the privilege to try. I live in Connecticut USA.

  • Steven Binkowitz says:

I would have definitely imagined a fragrance like this would have a strong champagne or liquor accord. I like that it is representing more than just the party experience from the era, but more representative of the people from that era. This fragrance sounds lovely, and I would absolutely love to get my nose on it. I live in Houston Texas, and I am a big fan of this site. Thanks for another great article and helping us understand the perfumers and the inspiration behind their creations on a deeper level.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeup Lauryn.

This totally sounds like the kind of fragrance that I would think Jude Law, Daniel Craig or Pierce Brosnan would wear.

Elegant, striking, composed but making it’s presence felt.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I enjoyed how this review immediately contrasts Ormonde Jayne Gatsby 22 with other Gatsby fragrances, highlighting its modern citrus aesthetic in lieu of the usual thematic touchstones. That lemon and pink pepper opening over vetiver is right up my alley, and I often enjoy a well-placed violet note. This sounds like a terrific spray en route to New Egg and I’d love to try it. Thanks for the beautiful review, Lauren.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Ormonde Jayne fragrances. If I was to cast Jay Gatsby in 2022, I bet Billy Magnussen would pull off the character perfectly.

  • I love that this is a different representation of the era than just being an “on the nose” boosie scent. I live in Houston Texas and would like to enter the giveaway.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Lauryn’s review of Ormonde Jayne Gatsby 22 was learning how Ormonde Jayne’s Gatsby 22, is an abstraction, a jazz riff on Jay Gatsby set at just that moment when the sun sinks, the afterglow of its heat radiating into the night party’s glitter. A Gatsby Inspired modernized citrusy fragrance that really transports you to a different time and something I would love to try. My favorite Ornonde Jayne fragrance is Ormonde Jayne Man. I would cast Ryan Gosling to play Jay Gatsby is 2022. I am from the USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I like the idea of imagining a 1920s man through the lens of today’s sensibilities. I enjoyed all the jazz era images Lauryn evoked. Gatsby 22 sounds very elegant and very impeccable. This is the kind of fragrance I could see myself wearing when I need some zest and zing. I think James Norton would portray Gatsby very well in 2022. I love Ormonde Jayne Man.
    I live in the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve been interested to try fragrances from Ormonde Jayne for a while, but I haven’t had a chance yet. This new one sounds good: I like a lot of its ingredients, e.g. vetiver, orange blossom. “Barbershop” fragrances can be some of my favorite fragrances. Lauryn’s review made me think that I would probably enjoy this fragrance, e.g. when she mentions the soapy, clean musk. Also, I like when Lauryn compares it to expensive Italian colognes. I live in the U.S.A.
