Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena Review (Patricia de Nicolaï) 2022 + Au Bord de la Mer Draw

What could be finer than to repose in the capacious shade of an ancient olive tree while sipping a cool glass of pastis au bord de la mer? For me, this delightful scenario could only be improved upon by nestling in a hammock slung between two olive trees. I am grateful for such memories, but if travel of this sort isn’t in the offing, then the next best thing is to enwreathe yourself in a cloud of Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena. It’s a veritable tonic for body and spirit which floats about one, enveloping you in a state of citrus-herbal bliss.

Patricia de Nicolaï has created an olfactory haven for us along the Mediterranean, light-filled and breezy in hues of green and gold accented with blazing white jasmine. This is Riviera Verbena’s palette, hyper-realistic and effortlessly elegant. Their garden borders the sea, replete with the oceanic ozone of Calone®, fresh herbs, spearmint and lemongrass. The lemon fruit and leaves (petitgrain de citronnier) figure prominently: distillation of lemon leaves results in a zesty, woody natural material which is equally at home with flowers as it is with culinary greenery. Those who may be skeptical about spearmint needn’t fret – being a less spiky scent than its cousin peppermint, it is subtle and marries seamlessly with all the other aromatics in this eau de toilette. The thyme which grows along the maquis (scrubland) is hardy and strongly perfumed; to crush it underfoot or rub it between your fingers releases an inimitable fragrance.

When introduced to an intense verbena, we experience that which is intuitive in the kitchen – a lemony freshness which smells of sweet newly mown grass and delicious terpenes, a touch medicinal in nature. When Calone® mingles with thyme it sings of the sea, briny and beautiful (this, from a woman who is not a fan of Calone® in general). Egyptian jasmine contributes an indolic murmur, very soft – and rose appears as a universal playmate who softens and rounds out the heart while flattering everyone. Each fragrant material has purpose; nothing included is superfluous.

Vintage Rene Grau 1960

Citrus adores vetiver – and the grounding notes in Riviera Verbena possess a lightly smoky vetiver wed to another popular member of the mint family: patchouli. The particular patchouli employed here is relatively delicate, which suits the overall fragrance; a chorus of white musks confer a sweet soapiness with only a smidgen of animalic bite. Riviera Verbena is nothing if not well-balanced and graceful – universally comfortable and chic. You can certainly wear it at any time of the year – but its hesperidic allure will prove a boon during those sweltering summer months. I envision chilling my bottle in the refrigerator so that it will sizzle over my summer-parched skin. There is a downside, however: you must not drink it. Other than that small inconvenience, Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena is practically perfect.

Notes: petitgrain from the lemon tree, lemon, lemongrass (citronelle), spearmint, thyme, snipped herbs, verbena, Calone® (Firmenich), Egyptian jasmine, rose, vetiver, patchouli, white musks

My bottle was generously provided by Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur – many thanks! It’s delicious.  My nose is my own…

  • Ida’s article is like an amazing travelogue, narrated with scents to look out for! My favorite Nicolai is NY Intense. NV, US.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I love relaxing in a hammock during the hot summer months, and the idea of doing so between two olive trees by the sea sounds even more enticing. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I enjoyed it’s details and the way how it was written. I don’t have a favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena looks like a great wear for summer and may even appeal to those who do not enjoy notes like calone and spearmint. I am especially intrigued by how spearmint has been deployed because I have longed for a fragrance that employs spearment in a way that emphasizes its sweeter side. I am in US. My favorite from Nicolai is New York, also my first purchase from the brand. I have both vintage and modern (around 2011) formula.

  • Ida’s review of Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena conjures up images of sunny weather, beautiful beaches, while traveling in the French Riviera. I’d would be great to take such a vacation, else one has Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena – spray some on, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and you are there. Seems like a perfect summer travel perfume. Unfortunately, this brand is very new to me and I haven’t tried anything by them, yet. Love the citrusy notes. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Katalin Kafar says:

Reading the review I just imagined myself on the French Riviera.
Unfortunately I don’t tryed this brand yet.
I’m living in the UK. 🙂

  • What a refreshing fragrance, all citrus and vetiver. I love them both and especially with the hotter months upon us. Sounds divine! In maryland, where it gets very hot and sticky.

  • This fragrance sounds the perfect one for summer at the beach. The calone, which I am a big fan of, makes it perfect along the other green notes. I would love to wear it. Until now, my favorite Nicolai Parfumeur fragrance is Eau Dété.

  • Ida’s writing always takes me on a journey. I love where she took me today. Nicolai is my favorite house; New York or Le Temps d’une Fete are my favorite scents from this house. I live in Washington DC. Thank you for the drawing.

  • roxhas1cat says:

The first paragraph captured me, reminded me of my olive tree when I was growing up. How I loved that tree and the weather that went along with it. A chilled bottle of this fragrance sounds like a delight. I shall not fret about the mint, I’ve not always liked that note in a perfume, but I’ll take Ida’s word on it. My favorite of the line is Neroli Intense. I have the Violette in Love on my to try list. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • rachelng says:

Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Beautiful review!!! This fragrance sounds graceful & comfortable! I think of Jackie O with her sunglasses & leather sandals. ❤️ I would love to experience Riviera Verbena (especially after your recommendation!). Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA
ps – I don’t have a favorite Nicolai fragrance, yet, but I’ve really liked everything I’ve tried so far!

  • Love the way you described the sea-citrus-herbal notes! This would be great for the upcoming summer months. I have never tried Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrances but would love to! I live in CA, USA.

  • Maryjean says:

Ida’s review was wonderful. Love the details and notes. I felt the Summertime. This is something I would love to have in my collection. Thank you for this Chance USA

I like how perfume can transport you. It can take you to a place you have never been, or deliver you to a place you have. It seems like “Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena” is here just in time for the summer. Ida, your review was elegant, well thought out, informative, and full of well constructed sentences and commanding vocabulary. I’ve never tried anything by Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur, I feel like I’ve at least tried “Riviera Verbena” based on this review!

  • What a lovely review!
I am so mesmerized by that view from To Catch a Thief!
I want to be enveloped ‘in a state of herbal-citrus bliss’–
sounds like my kind of fragrance!
I do not have a favorite Nicolai fragrance, and I would love to experience this one.
Thank you for the drawing. I am in the USA.

  • RiccardoC says:

Well, being from the italian Riviera, this perfume review from Ida managed to vividly transport me in a beautiful summer trip nearby the cost. All the images and notes are there: the sea, the amazing citruses, thyme and one of my favourite flower: the jasmine.
The verbena is not much present in my area, but having smelled it before I can see how it can be a great add to the fragrance.
This seems to be a lovely perfume and I would really like to try it.
I am new to Nicolai Parfumeur and this would be the first perfume I would smell. I’ve heard good comments about Cuir Cuba intense, though.

  • Helena Shinkoda says:

I’m not familiar with Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur but based on Ida’s review about Riviera Verbena this fragrance sounds lovely. All the notes scream spring and summer. Zesty, green, vetiver… I would love to try it!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • Love Ida’s reviews!! And love Nicolai’s perfumes very much: my favourites Eau d’Mixte, New York.
This perfume sounds amazing – just for hot summer days- citruses, verbena – WOW!!!

Perfect fragrance for summer months. I love all detailes and notes. I am from Bucharest Romania Europe

  • Lovely! I can’t wait for those hot days to arrive. I also loved imaging the fragrance as you described it, while relaxing in a hammock between olive trees. I haven’t smelled any fragrances from this brand (yet). Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • NituNicolae says:

As always, a green fragrance is always welcome in my collection, if I would get to be so lucky. Spearmint, petitgrain and lemon boosted by vetiver sounds right up my alley. Thank you for the opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • Oh my, such a lovely review ! The way Ida managed to conjure the scent scape is beautiful. As a fan of this house, would love to try this. Thanks for the draw.

  • Beautifully written review! My favorite Nicolai perfume is the original Sacre Bleu. I’m in the US

  • When Calone® mingles with thyme it sings of the sea, briny and beautiful… love it! From EU 🙂

  • I did very much enjoy the description, especially the paragraph that begins “Citrus adores vetiver”. Among my house faves is New York. US

  • I want to be ensconced in citrus-herbal bliss! Ida’s review of Nicolai Parfumeur-Createur Riviera Verbena has me longing for a Mediterranean vacation. I haven’t tried any products from this brand. I am in the US.

  • Southirina says:

    I must admit I’ve googled Pastis 🙂
And now that I know about it, I can say I have the perfect image of an away-day in Mediterranean heaven.
I love that Riviera Verbena is a tonic for body and soul. If there would be an emergency Mediterranean holiday kit, like, let’s say you’ve got a surprise invitation to spent a few days on the Mediterranean and you have to leave in one hour, Riviera Verbena would be part of the kit 🙂
    I don’t have a favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance.
    Hugs from Romania

  • I have a small collection of vintage travel art so I enjoyed seeing some used in the review. I really like wearing lemon scents in summer so this sounds like a perfume I could get some wear out of! I am from New England.

  • Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur is one of my favorite perfume houses, so I was very happy to learn about their new fragrance and to participate in a draw. My most beloved scent is Vie de Chateau Intense. New York Intense is on the list to try (soon). 🙂

Ida’s evocative paragraphs have already convinced me that Riviera Verbena belongs to the same list or even to the list »to blind buy«, which is for rigorous »sampler« highly contradictory, and such inconsistencies are made rarely in my fragrance journey.

Ida broke down the composition to the single notes in such a poetic and evocative manner that one can imagine smelling the fragrance and laying in a hammock in the olive tree shade on the french riviera. I was utterly mesmerized by her overall depiction of the fragrance as effortlessly elegant, universally comfortable, and chic
Season – versatile, even if it is best suited for summer, is an additional bonus.
Thank you for a superb review, Ida!
    Greetings from Slovenia (EU).

  • Starlit12 says:

Wow, my mouth watered merely by reading Ida’s article. Riviera Verbena sounds so zesty, fresh and full of life that it must be delightful to wear it on a hot summer day…and not only. The category of citrus fragrances is classic and indispensable and this one sounds like a wonderful exponent of it.
My favorite Nicolaï fragrance is an absolutely different one, Baikal Leather.
    I live in the EU.

  • Love Nicolaï Parfumeur. Two of my favs are Patchouli Intense and Cap Neroli. I long to visit the French Riviera and Riviera Verbena would take me there in my dreams. I love the scent of a freshly mowed lawn. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • wandering_nose says:

Oh I loved Ida’s review! It is so lively, full of light (and shadow, when it gets too hot in the open sun) and so tangible that I was happily travelling along the French Riviera with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant while reading her tasteful description. Just what I needed to uplift me today. I adore Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrances, had a chance to sniff them over two days in an amazing boutique on one of my journeys, and my nose was totally captivated. My favorites were Patchouli Intense and Ambre Cashmere Intense. The notes in Riviera Verbena are so wonderful for summer that Ida’s disclaimer the perfume should be enjoyed but as a cooling beverage is more than valid. Thank you for the draw! • John McDonald says:

    Very interesting fragrance.
Was glad for the reassurance that the spearmint was not overbearing.
    Oklahoma USA

  • AndradaIl says:

Was not accustomed with the note of verbena. I did not know that it has a lemony vibe. Fresh, calming, playfull. This fragrance seems like it has it all. I mever got the chance to try a Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance, but i hope i ll win this one. I live in the EU.

  • This is my type of scent, and I love that Ida , aside from being amazing Ida, said you can’t drink it but it will be wonderful chilled.
    I’m NJ- US.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Smelling citrus and vetiver while relaxing on the Riviera sounds like a heavenly way to spend the summer. The addition of (some) of the Herbs de Provence along with the musk and Calone send me back to the Camargue. Great use of “heperidic”, Ida! Favorite PdN is Odalisque. MD. USA.

  • Chilling the bottle of Riviera Verbena in the refrigerator is exactly what I’m going to do, if I win the draw. What a marvelous idea!

I live in Portugal, we have our own Riviera here

  • punchflower says:

Refreshing with a light indolic bite. This fragrance sounds delightful, hot weather and herbs by the sea. I don’t have a favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance but maybe this could be it! From US

  • Great review Ida, as always! The review read like an amazing travelogue, with a couple of other scents to look out for! My favorite Nicolai is NY Intense, with Patchouli Intense secondly! This one also seems amazing! I live in Croatia, EU

  • Thanks for the review Ida!

This sounds intensely refreshing and delicious. I love the Mediterranean summers and the fresh green and floral scents with a cool sea breeze. Your article immediately took me back to my last holiday on the French Riviera where my sister lives.
In fact! I think I’ll give her a call right now and see if I can plan a visit next month! You’ve convinced me!

I do not have any fragrances from Nicolai Parfumeur myself, but my girlfriend has a small bottle of Musc Intense which she wears on special occassions. An amazing Fruity and Floral Musk. absolutely divine!

    Greetings from the EU!

  • Ida! your first statement in this review took me away to the most beautiful place in my soul and heart, the Mediterranean environment. I fall in love with Riviera Verbena very quickly. It seems that Patricia and I have the same love 🙂 The Mediterranean sea breeze in summer is unforgettable, especially in the south of France. I want to jump into this great fragrance to feel everything related to those sunny moments. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to smell any of the Nicolaï fragrances and I hope that Riviera Verbena will be the first one. Greetings from Sarajevo 🙂

33th anniversary of Parfums de Nikolai is coming soon, as far as I can remember late September , such a milestone for independent brand.
My congrats are not only to Patricia, but to all Parfums de Nikolai employees, and especially to Axel de Nikolai. He pumped huge amount of fresh blood into Parfums de Nikolai. Just a few years back PdN were known as mature mens brand. I’ve been to PdN boutiques ~dozen times, and honestly I’ve never seen a customer younger than me.
Everybody loves a good citrus-aromatic fragrance . Good to know Riviera Verbena is not just a linear fragrance, but there’s woody , spicy and floral notes too. The “smoky vetiver” is pleasant addition . Definitely the brand is going into right direction , i’m looking forward to try Riviera Verbena

“Those who may be skeptical about spearmint needn’t fret”

That’s me , thank you Ida for the reassurance.
Just followed @damienjflynn , all other profiles I already follow
Vanille Tonka , and New York Intense are my favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur fragrances
    Thanks a lot

I hope you don’t mind, but it’s a sad day for the fragrance community , just found out Rosendo Mateu left us , I hope he’s in a better place now. RIP

  • Thanks for the review Ida! This fragrance sounds wonderfully uplifting. I’m often sensitive to Calone®, but I love its effect when used sparingly, and combining it with herbal notes like spearmint and lemongrass strikes me as somewhat unusual. Reading this review I can imagine the smell of the Mediterranean seaside; Riviera Verbena seems to truly capture it. This would be my first chance to try a Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance, and it sounds like a perfect introduction.

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • Enjoyed the article. Can imagine being on the French Riviera and enjoying some sun. Riviera Verbena sounds like a nice citrus green fragrance.
Like to check it out. Thanks, ca

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ida’s review of Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Riviera Verbena. This sounds like the model fragrance for venturing to the French Riviera and experiencing all the realistic citrus, ozonic, aromatic, and white floral touches. Ida transports you there to get a first hand detailed experience of what it may be like. I am from the USA. My favorite Parfums de Nicolai fragrance is New York Intense.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Fascinating review Ida! What I most enjoyed about Ida’s article is her very evocative imagery of a journey along the Mediterranean, a hyper-realistic garden bordering the sea, filled with light, greenery, oceanic notes, and fragrant floralcy. I feel utterly transported just reading the article, so I can’t wait to try this scent!

I live in the US. My favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance is Odalisque, a gorgeous seductive yet bright sparkling floral.

What I appreciated about Ida’s review, especially since we’re in Spring approaching Summer, is how she enlightened us as to the uplifting and refreshing nature of this fragrance; as well as, highlighting its versatility.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA, and have not had the privilege of sniffing a Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur fragrance. Hopefully that will change when the announcement is made.

  • Nice review Ida! Summer in May, 30º today, arrived already in Madrid so Mme Nicolai new perfume will be perfect. Far from the sea here, I can imagine a radiant, luminous and invigorating trip by a mediterranean road in a convertible with the breeze in my face. I can also make this trip with drops of this citrus-herbal-garden by the sea scent. I love Verbena and now is so green and fresh and citrusy in my balcony so in the hands of Patricia Nicolai sounds perfect. I like she uses a smoky vetiver and a soft patchouli to balance and finishes this graceful fragrance. My favorite Nicolai fragrance is New York Intense. I live in Spain, EU

Ida Meister take on Riviera Verbena instantly reminded me of making, and later eating
Lemon Thyme Cake , drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice, with mint and scoop of honey , all while enjoying time in some small , coastline village in France. Such a cozy fragrance.
I’ve sampled 3 Nikolai Parfemeur Createur fragrances , Vanille Tonka , Neroli Intense and Angelys Pear. Even though there’s way more incense than vanilla and tonka , I like Vanille Tonka the most
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I’m very fond of “Lalique Pour Homme EDP”, so I’ve been wanting to try “New York Intense” for a while now, but I haven’t had a chance yet. I’m under the impression that I would want to try all of this company’s fragrance releases. According to Ida, I might want to wear this new one during the summer. I’m under the impression that this fragrance includes a good use of mint family ingredients. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I have a feeling scorching hot Summer is upon us , and Riviera Verbena is the ideal solution , welcoming and comfy fragrance. Ida review was like a romantic , getaway vacation , exactly what I need at the moment.
Angelys Pear is my favorite Parfums de Nikolai, watery , slightly tart pear , fresh rose and positive emotions type of scent.

I had the pleasure of visiting one of Nikolai Parfemeur Createur boutiques in Paris back in 2018 , and the one that impressed me the most was Cuir Cuba Intense . End up buying 100ml bottle for €171. Not sure if the price is still the same. Simply awesome tobacco and licorice fragrance i wear with a suit only.
Riviera Verbena is more versatile, and easy to wear, with a white linen suit i how I see myself wearing it.
What surprised me a bit , is how different Cuir Cuba Intense, and Riviera Verbena are , yet they share a few notes- the mint , the lemon, patchouli and herbs

Cruising in the old Mustang in the streets of St. Tropez , jamming The Jackson’s- Blame it on the Boogie, with 10-12 sprays of Riviera Verbena- i live for such moments.
