Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense Review (Patricia de Nicolaï) 2023 + Coffee and Cardamom Masterpiece Giveaway

Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense review

Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense photo by Steven

Patricia de Nicolaï is the great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain who, with his brother Jacques as chief perfume designer, led their company to success in the first part of the 20th century (she is the niece of Jean-Paul Guerlain, the last family member to run the House of Guerlain) but as Madame told me in an interview, “the “family” would not have a woman in the role as a perfumer: “it was not an obvious option for my family to believe that I could work as a perfumer. Remember that I began my career, in the 80’s and in those times, the Guerlain business was managed by my grandmother’s brother who believed that women in the family should not be working…” Their loss is independent perfumery’s gain. With the encouragement of her late husband Jean Louis Michau today Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur, is one of the most renowned independent perfume brands in the world, and has been so since 1989.

On January 15, 2023, ÇaFleureBon had the privilege of announcing the new Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense. An excerpt of Patricia de Nicolaï”s exclusive quote regarding her creative process:

“I visited the Middle East many times and I’m always surprised by the very warm and welcoming Arabic sense of hospitality. Especially when they offer you coffee! The Arabic coffee is so unique, it’s a wonderful mixture of Arabica beans and spices such as cardamom and Tonka beans. I really appreciate that smell and it was time for me to create a fragrance inspired by these notes.  It’s a path I really wanted to go through as I realize that I did not really have a woody gourmand in my collection of fragrances.

When I started to work on the new Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense,  the challenge for me was to transform this typical spicy coffee flavor into a perfume. To do so, I built a top note using coffee absolute, cardamom essence and some fruity plum facets. Then I decided to support this first impression by a woody patchouli and sandalwood heart all completed by dry amber base notes like Ambrocenide and Ambroxan. The name Caravansérail came at the end and it was so obvious! During the Middle-Ages a caravanserai was an inn developed throughout the Middle-East where travelers of the Silk and Spices routes used to rest after long and hard journeys. It was a safe place on which they also used to trade and get information of the world. It was a place of hospitality and this is really the characteristic of that fragrance.”

Top: Coffee absolue, plum, raspberry; Middle: Cardamom Essence, Clove Essence, Cinnamon Essence, Patchouli heart essence, Sandalwood essence; Base:Vanilla absolute, tonka absolute, immortelle absolute- Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

  • Jesus Barrera says:

It is very interesting and for me starting in this huge world of parfumes and getting the chance to try or smell like spices from far side of the world mixed with amber ,vanilla, coffee, etc. Very very excited about the idea

  • The history of this brand from Michelyn’s introduction was both informative and interesting. I liked Steven’s description of the note development during dry down. The idea of immortelle combined with cardamom sounds very interesting to me. I’m in Utah, USA.

  • As Michelyn said, Guerlain’s loss truly is a win for independent perfumery. The creations from Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur that I have tried have all been fantastic and are easily among some of the best performers in my collection (Pattchouli Intense nearly requires a scrub with indctrial chemicals to remove). Alas, Caravansérail sounds like it is another long-lasting gem of a fragrance. It was exciting to hear Steven talk about the enigmatic nature of the fragrance taking you on a journey. After all, my favorite part of perfumery is its transportive nature. It was also great to hear that the cadamom note is not only prevalent but lasts for hours – yay for me because I LOVE cardamom. The idea of it combined with coffee and other warm spices just makes my mouth water. Reading from NC, USA.

  • A woody gourmand experience is enticing, especially with the Arabica beans, Tonka beans, and cardamom. I love the story behind the name of the fragrance as an inn for spice and silk traders, definitely transports you back in time. My favorite from the house is Amber Oud. I’m one of the 29 readers/viewers, located in NY, USA.

  • THIS. Was the fragrance I was patiently waiting for! Terrible shame to hear about the Guerlain family’s intransigent tradition regarding female perfumers. But just like Michelyn said, it’s independent perfumery’s monumental gain. Patricia is a brilliant artist. The addition of fruity plum facets with the coffee and cardamom in this one sound divine. I can only hope the woody ambers in the base don’t scream as can be the case in many spicy/coffee formulas. Great to hear from Steven that it doesn’t go into the gourmand direction either. Ditto with the clear transition into vanilla, resins and patchouli in the base. Always a plus to have a fragrance that keeps me guessing. Would be nice to get a stronger clove in, but who knows, maybe it’ll pop on my skin. Like I said though, I’m usually quite cautious nowadays when it comes to woody amber materials, but I have absolute faith in Patricia’s blending ability. Can’t wait to try this one. In fact, I’m writing this while enjoying a rich black coffee myself, so my imagination is already primed! All I need now are the ssssssspices. Mmmmm. lol Current fav from the brand is Patchouli Intense! From Canada.

  • I love everything this house comes out with, their creations are always unique, and i’m happy to see l inspired creation from them. Can’t wait to smell this !

Thanks for the giveaway. Based in the EU

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

The idea of a fragrance inspired by Arabic coffee sounds really nice to me. I liked how Steven mentioned it being perfectly unisex and enveloping you like a warm blanket. I live in Maryland USA.

  • From the intro I found out the brand goes back to 1989. From the vid I learned the cardamom is at the helm. US

  • Huge fan of the coffee-cardamom combination when blended with hearty resins or rich vanillas. Very much appreciate the reviews of MICHELYN AND STEVEN, my favorite from the house is Patchouli intense.
    From France

  • I am in love with these notes — rich spices with coffee and immortelle! Sounds delectable. I am salivating just reading the list! Subscribed to Redolessence and in the USA.

An aside, I am fascinated by Madame Nicolai. Perhaps she will allow someone to write a biography. I would read that book.

  • I enjoyed a lot how complex and beautiful Michelyn’s introduction was. I really enjoyed how professionally Steven’s video review was made. I never tried this house but I think my favourite would be Caravansérail. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I was one of the 29 readers.

  • ramsesperez52 says:

I love the name, very exotic. I also don’t have any Mizensir fragrances so I would to win this one. A coffee cardamom combination does sound very rich and unique like Steven said. I like the story Michelyn told of how the word Caravansérail came to be, as a resting place for travelers with lots of spices around. Of course, being a Mizensir fragrance, it is also long lasting. Cheers from the USA.

  • Michelyn’s introduction is always informative and professional. Steven’s reviews make the fragrance come to life even not having smelled it before. Never tried any fragrances from this house before, but I love coffee scents and this scent profile sounds very appealing! I’m in California.

  • liquidasset77 says:

By combining the complex and invigorating essence of fresh ground coffee with the rich spicy depths of cardamom, and hay like Immortelle has to be incredible.

  • barrysharpnack says:

I actually bought a bottle a Nicolai Fig Tea for my wife a while back, and she likes it and so do I. I love coffee scents and have never smelled coffee with cardamom before (but would love to). Steven is always direct and honest with his reviews, and we tend to like the same recommendations.

  • Steven’s reviews are always very in depth and detail, always appreciated, this one sounds like it smells amazing, I hope to in it. From Puerto Rico.

  • Daniel Garcia says:

What an interesting sounding scent! Would really be amazing to get to try this. From Fremont, California

  • Omg.. I’ve always wanted to get into this house, with initially my eye on eau de yuzu.. but this reads too damn delicious to pass up. Here’s hoping!

  • Love the naming comment about how the name is indicative of an ‘Inn’ filled with the smells of those passing through with different goods (coffee, cardamom, etc). Steven’s comment is interesting about how you definitely pick up amber, spices, and vanilla without this leaning too heavily into Gourmand territory… yet it does say it’s an ‘ Intense’ fragrance. NY Intense by this house is one of my absolutel favorites and I’d love to see what they’ve cooked up for this fragrance. I commented on the original post as well so please count this entry twice! Shipping to Pittsburgh, PA USA

  • Just smelled the rich aroma oozing from my coffee jar. Man, I could smell that all day. I get the feeling this offering is right up my alley and make other passerbys just lift their noses to the rich aroma.

  • fragmerican_idiot says:

I really liked the way she described Arabic coffee, I know it well and I LOVE the smell! Steven’s video was great, he gives such an unbiased review and highlights exactly what I am wanting to know. My favorite from Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur is now Caravansérail Intense. I am in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States of America.

  • I quite enjoyed Michelyn’s introduction, Its very interesting to learn that the great granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain has created their own perfume house, yet also shows how much history there is in the fragrance business. I think Steven did a good job describing the notes in the fragrance, the tonka bean and vanilla sounds like an incredible combination with the coffee opening for the colder seasons. I haven’t tried any Nicolai perfume’s before so its hard to choose a favorite based on the notes themself, but I would love to try a sample one day. From TX, USA.

  • Haha, yup, I commented the first time. VERY excited! Coffee, spice, amber, vanilla—totally up my alley. Also excited to hear Steven say there’s an interesting development over time—with this many facets it sounds like it would be fun to wear even if linear but it’s always nice to have something develop. Love a good drydown! Reading in the U.S.!

  • I enjoyed learning the history of the perfumer, who was not able to work for the family business and had to break out on her own. I also liked reading the inspiration for the scent, the hospitality and fragrant spiced coffee to be found along the Silk Road. I liked Steven’s description of the evolution of the scent throughout the day, with the spicy amber dry down. I have not tried anything from this brand yet, but I am happy to learn about it. Hello from Colorado, USA and thanks for hosting this!

  • This sounds very good!
Patricia de Nicolai is a very gifted, seasoned and ambitious perfumer, which shouldn’t be surprising coming from the Guerlain family – the “great perfume formula“ runs through her veins so to speak. I love most of her fragrances and think she deserves way more acclaim than she gets.

  • I learned a lot from Michelyn’s introduction. Let’s hear it for the independent Fragrance house. As for the notes with the Arabic Bean , spices this is interesting. Steven’s Video said it’s unisex. I’m glad to hear that not sure with the notes. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Interesting that she is the niece of Jean-Paul Guerlain, but that “the “family” would not have a woman in the role as a perfumer. Their loss really because searching for the way to transform spicy coffee flavor into a perfume, she made a masterpiece.
Steven made me even more interested in this one describing it as not too sweet spicy amber that lasts long and shifts constantly in different directions.
    Hugs from Croatia, EU.

  • Michelyn says Guerlain’s loss by not embracing Patricia was independent perfumery’s gain Steven says Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense is spicy, warm, and indulgent. He particularly notices cardamom and coffee in early stages but the fragrance goes through different stages later including revealing its spicy character. i am in US.

  • As a long time lover of Patricia de Nicolaï’s fragrances, I’m always intrigued when a new perfume from this house is launched. This seems to be right up my alley, I love spicy perfumes and coffee. I like how Patricia got to make her own brand, seems like you cannot escape the family’s talent after all. Steven’s review was right on point, it gave me a solid idea about how this perfume develops, cardamon centered, warm and comforting. Immortelle is also a nice touch, I always love how this note brings a dryness feeling to the perfume, making them more airy I guess. Oh, and almost forgot, the name is gorgeous.
Thank you for the giveaway, I am in EU.

  • It seems so deep and interesting. I’ll be so glad to wear it before the end of Canadian winter.

  • Applauses to Patricia de Nicolai for all the efforts and determination during the years, despite her path being beset with difficulties and doubts ,some of which coming from family members.
Michelyn interview with Patricia was very helpful , I know Caravansérail spicy coffee background now .
Steven take on the fragrance , and Michelyn interview with Patricia together made me think of making , and later eating Cinnamon Bundt Coffee Cake, and drinking Turkish coffee with cardamom. Caravansérail I’ll enjoy a lot, I’m certain.
I’ve sampled 3 Nikolai Parfemeur Createur fragrances , Vanille Tonka , Neroli Intense and Angelys Pear. Even though there’s way more incense than vanilla and tonka , I like Vanille Tonka the most
Appreciate the introduction with the interview , the review, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • The interpretation of Arabic coffe , the spices, the ambery base and the add of immortelle made Caravanserail Intense a gourmand lover’s dream, i’m very fond of all those notes and gratefull for the chance to win this one , thanks from EU!

  • OMG, i just love coffee fragrances <3
Hope i can get my hands on this 😀

  • katyakotovskaya says:

Both the intro and Steven’s review were really informative and helpful! I liked how Michelyn emphasized the role of Patricia de Nicolaï in making the perfume industry more diverse gender-wise. And Steven did a great job by telling us about the entire olfactive experience during evolvement and dry down. I’m deeply intrigued by this creation, and I love cardamom notes! Amber Oud and Baïkal Leather are real beauties of the house! I live in Switzerland.

  • You just can’t deny who you are and are meant to be! Thankful for all the supportive families, whether chosen or born that help bring us all the creative maestros!! I’m fascinated by the addition of immortelle to this one. I’ve never smelled a blend by Nicolai that I did not like!!
Thankful for the giveaway, In USA

  • So many coffee based scents reviewed lately! Knowing the masterful blend the house of Nicolai does, I’m pretty sure it’s a rich full bodied coffee that would be good to smell on any time of day, not just the morning 🙂
    I’m in the EU.

  • Thank you so much for your generous giveaway! I’m so interested in this fragrance. The explanation of the name of this fragrance in the article was really interesting. The phrases “rest after long and hard journeys” and “safe place” caught my attention…I’m a coffee addict and often, it’s not about the taste or the caffeine but it’s more about the feelings I have while sitting with a cup of it and the time I take to slow down and enjoy it. Something about the heat and flavor gives me “safe place” feels and relaxing with a cup does in fact feel like “rest after long and hard journeys”, if that makes sense. Reading this article and watching this video, I believe that this fragrance will evoke those feelings in me. That immortelle note is not something I often get to experience in a fragrance but I enjoy it so much when it’s used appropriately. Steven mentions it having a wheat quality in this fragrance which sounds SO AMAZING!! I love fragrances like this. And Steven mentions this fragrance will provide warmth and envelop you like a warm blanket and that is exactly what I seek in a fragrance like this. Yes, there are presently many cardamom heavy fragrances on the market but this one stands out to me. The simplicity of the presentation just goes along with the whole vibe of relax, slow down, rest. The performance on this fragrance sounds like it’s just right…not overbearing but not a skin-scent either until the very end of the wearing. I’d love an opportunity to experience this one! I’m in Philadelphia, PA area USA. Thank you again for the generous giveaway!

I’m always a fan of Michelyn’s excerpts from the creators. Steven did a great job explaining the spices and how they mix with the resins, patchouli, and amber. I have New York Intense. I hope I win Caravanserail because I love cardamom, cinnamon, and coffee. I’m in New Jersey, USA

  • lavienrose13 says:

I have already posted a comment on the previous post, to say that the name of this perfume is intriguing because it reminds me the caravenserail I could visit and enjoy in Azerbaidjan.
“I have been lucky enough to see beautiful caravenserail in Azerbaidjan and the name evoques immediately some pictures and lunch I had there. Looking forward to discover it. The review is truely inspiring, Thanks for the journey ! from France”
    Thanks for this opportunity !

  • Caravansérail sounds absolutely exquisite both in Ms. Patricia Nicolai’s and in Steven’s words. From Michelyn’s introduction, which also thoughtfully presents Patricia and briefly, her history in perfumery, I gather this is such an indulgent, rich coffee fragrance inspired by Arabic coffee beans and spices. Reading about the Arab hospitality and how they offer you coffee was absolutely lovely, as I am familiar with Turks, Persians and other oriental peoples doing the same.
Steven then describes it as a luxury coffee shop – vibed, amber and vanilla based coffee with not only cardamom, but a plethora of spices to back it up, and I love it. It must be the coziest, most comforting and delicious cool weather perfume ever.
I was happy to read and watch a more in depth presentation of this fragrance, since it had already captured my attention in the previous article dedicated to it. I am one of the 29 readers that commented to the announcement.
My favorite Nicolaï so far is Baikal Leather Intense.
    Commenting from the EU.
    Thanks!

  • So glad to read Patricia bucked the family trend, and followed her heart and nose to create this powerhouse. Another tempting fragrance! Steven’s review left me salivating. I can never have enough cardamom. Going to put some in my coffee as soon as I am done commenting.

This sounds like such a rich, lush perfume, a wonderful reminder of Middle East travels. My heart goes out to Syria and Turkey now. Located in USA

  • Enjoyed reading Michelyn’s introduction, especially the part how Patricia layered this fragrance to get the scent she wanted to reproduce and how tge name Caravansérail came to be.
In Steven’s video, I love how he describes the whole sensory experience from top notes to drydown.

  • Cardamom is absolutely my favorite note, so the fact that in Steven’s review he mentions that it’s such a cardamom heavy opening really intrigued me! Especially since he says that it’s not really a gourmand, but rather an amber.

I also had no idea that Patricia de Nicolaï is related to the Guerlain family, as per Michelyn’s intro, and that Patricia was able to branch out and have her own successful company. Guerlain’s loss was truly the perfume world’s gain.

    I’m located in Pennsylvania, USA!

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

The quotes that Ms. Camen was able to elicit from her interview with Madame Patricia were really interesting. The motif for this fragrance is very intriguing as I’ve always wondered about life on the Spice/Silk Road back in the day. I enjoy the scent of coffee but this one seems to offer another level of complexity to the traditional with the added spices. Steven’s review got me excited to come to the site to read this narrative. He always has a story to tell that’s appropriate to the fragrance he’s reviewing. Definitely hope to win this giveaway. Many thanks for the opportunity and blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • Loved this review of Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense. The history of Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur and Patricia (narrated in her intro by Michelyn) is quite interesting. One would think that Guerlain, being French, would be quite liberal and open about anyone talented to run their perfumery business – the fact that they won’t let a woman run it came as a big surprise as I have always admired the brand. And the quote by Patricia on coffee and trying to capture Arabian hospitality through her perfume was interesting to learn too.

I am glad that Steven and Michelyn tend to focus on different aspects of perfumes, so there is not much repitition in their reviews. I am a Redolessence subscriber and like Steven’s reviews as they focus on practical aspects (not historical, juicy stories, which is Michelyn’s forte 🙂 meant as a big compliment, Michelyn). So I learnt from Steven that it is spicy, earthy, inviting perfume, not too giurmand, but ambery. So what is not to love about Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense. I have never tried this brand so no faves, yet. Thanks for a generous draw and lovely reviews. From continental USA.

  • I love everything cofffe and middle east related. Test was interesting and the vid was educational. Im from EU

  • wandering_nose says:

It is good to be reminded of Mme de Nicolaï ‘s honorable origins within the world of perfumery, as well of the limitations that used to exist in the Guerlain family in terms of women being allowed to work as perfumers. The world of independent perfumery has definitely gained an amazing talent as a result. I love Steven’s enthusiastic reaction to the fragrance and how he emphasizes the leading role of cardamom. I love me a cardamom coffee so I am sold on the opening. Cinnamon is one of my other favorite spices. Caravanserail seems to cater to the more mature gourmand lovers’ tastes who can see gourmand elements in a warm spicy amber perfume. I am happy to hear the fragrance shifts and morphs in the dry down, going in different directions. The high rating for uniqueness puts Caravanserail even higher in my books. Good longevity is always a bonus. My favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur perfume has been Ambre Cashmere Intense but I have an inkling Caravanserail might be a contender. Thank you from the EU

  • Arabic coffee is wonderful, redolent of spices and with an inherent creaminess. Its qualities are perfect for a fragrance interpretation and I’m so glad Patricia de Nicolai accepted the challenge. The notes are a perfect representation of the coffee and I’m really interested in the fruit (plum and raspberries) in the opening. This would seem to place it more firmly in the gourmand category. Favorite Nicolai perfume is Odalisque. MD, USA.

  • Patricia Nicolai life path could be summarized by one of my favorite quotes ever

“People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.” — George Bernard Shaw, playwright

Usually Despina Veneti, ( I’m glad she’s partially back ) , makes such comparisons , but this time Steven and Michelyn co-review made me think of 64’s Ford Mustang convertible, led by Ludovic Cruchot (Louis de Funès) in The Gendarme of Saint Tropez , (The Troops of St. Tropez) .
I re-imagined the scene a bit , cruising in the classic Mustang in the streets of Casablanca Morocco , jamming Michael Jackson “Wanna Be Starting Something” with decent amount of Caravansérail on skin , and going to local coffee shop , the fragrance is so fulfilling, and joyful .
I live for such moments , and fragrances.
Nikolai Parfemeur Createur I discovered late 2021, New York Intense i had to buy, it’s timeless , and in my latest samples purchase I’m still waiting, there’s Cuir Cuba Intense sample too.
    Overly exciting giveaway , USA
    Regards

  • I did not know Patricia de Nicolaï was rejected at Guerlain because of her gender. What a gift she has given us with her perfume house. As Steven said, the cardamom and coffee take center stage, which I love. Can’t wait to try this fragrance ~Indiana

  • Oooh this sounds like perfection, some of my very favorite notes. Ive been wanting to try this house for awhile, but was not aware of the guerlain relation, always interesting to learn more about stuff like that in your articles. I love how stephen breaks down each phase of the fragrance, some perfume influencers really only focus on describing the notes and the top of the fragrance as they smell it, I appreciate a longer description of what unfolds. As we all know, the top is so fleeting, almost no perfumes are perfectly linear. Im in WA, USA. 🙂

  • Nice reviews Michelyn and Steven! I think Patricia de Nicolaï is one of the best perfumers in the world and quietly she builded a brand with a lot of masterpieces and all of them are interesting. Fortunately, she did not follow the destiny set by her Guerlain family and become a perfumer. She had the great idea to transform the spicy coffee of the middle east into a perfume and was successful as always and choose and amazing name Caravanserai, the buildings along the Silk Road designed to provide overnight housing to travelers: I am sure they were offered coffee and cardamom, the heart of this scent. As Steven says a lot of spices get in the mix in a “supporting role”: clove, cinnamon, vanilla, tonka and the best part is that the scents keeps surprising you along the development. So Not a gourmand fragrance more an ambery one and long lasting (the lingering cardamom for 3-4 hours). Amazing. I live in Spain, EU.

  • I have already posted a comment on previous review and I have enjoyed reading again about Caravansérail Intense.
First of all, the interview with ‘The first lady of niche perfumery’ is absolutely great! I would love to read an autobiography because I did felt in love with her.
I like how Steven mentioned that the Caravansérail has meny layers and develops in time.
    Hugs from Romania

  • I’m a fan of coffee and cardamom. Enjoying the reviews of MICHELYN AND STEVEN. I’d love to get my nose in this based on both of their descriptions. New Jersey, USA

  • Thank you for your introduction and review! Nicolaï’s release is always a must-try!

As for the introduction, the exclusive quote is informative. I am a little surprised by Mme. Nicolaï’s sincerity. Instead of talking big like how some wild imagination inspires her, she very straightforwardly suggests her intention and approaches to recreate the Arabic coffee via fragrance!

I also enjoy Steven’s review very much. Honestly, this is my first time visiting his channel, and I am really impressed by his professionalism and all-round presentation. I love his detailed explanations on which facets of the notes are focused and what the relations between the notes are, as I can know much better what I can expect from the fragrance. The last conclusion section also helpfully summarises and emphasises some aspects we care about most. I guess I have a new guide for my future hunting decision 😉

    Love from Shanghai, China <3

P.S. 'Their loss is independent perfumery's gain.' Great saying! Besides the departure of brilliant Mathilde Laurent, this also reminds me of the hidden perfumer Anne-Marie Saget. She plays an essential role in the Guerlain milestones, such as Parura, Nahema, Derby, and Samara. Yet, her contributions have long been uncredited. I know this is less relevant with the Nicolai fragrance here, but I cannot help expressing my deeper disappointment towards Guerlain. Really love to see Michelyn's gentle stab on such sexism! How satisfactory

  • Michelyn’s article was a great read and an opportunity to learn about the triumph of Ms. de Nicolai in an often male-dominated industry, and how this perfume came into being. And Steven’s video review only adds to my excited anticipation especially hearing about his breakdown of the notes and its great performance! NYC. Thank you!

  • Great introduction by Michelyn and review by Steven, aka Redolessence.
I didn’t know that Patricia de Nicolaï is the great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain and that she was not let to enter the fragrance world.
I think that Caravansérail Intense is an amazing fragrance made by one of the best independent perfume brands.
I love that it has cardamon essence and it is a gourmand fragrance, warm and special for special nights. Would love to try it.
    USA here.

  • Such an interesting video-review!
Love coffee notes in perfumery and Immortelle combined with cardamom sounds very interesting.
I love Nicoliai;s creation, especially New York Intense.

  • “More olfactory territory to discover” describes what drives my fragrance explorations to a tee! Great review; he makes me want to try this for sure. I also love the ‘obvious’ name of caravanserai and origin story in the article. The scent sounds amazing! I like several Nicolai fragrances, and flirted with L’Eau Chic recently, but always come back to Sacrebleu. I live in the US

  • Awesome job by both Michelyn and Steven , one of the best Cafleurebon experiences since the beginning of the year
    I’ll start with
“Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.” — Sam Ewing
If fits Patricia de Nicolai character very well, she turned up both her sleeves , and her nose ,and the results are astonishing.
34th anniversary of Parfums de Nikolai is coming this year , as far as I can remember late September , such a milestone for independent brand.
My congrats are not only to how Michelyn called her once “The first Lady of Niche” Patricia de Nicolai , but to all Parfums de Nikolai employees, and especially to Axel de Nikolai.
He pumped huge amount of fresh blood into Parfums de Nikolai with the addition of 250ml decanters, bath products, soaps, gift sets , car sprays, sample sets , and so on are now available.
Everybody loves a good classy gourmand fragrance . Good to know Caravansérail Intense is not just a linear fragrance, but there’s woody , spicy and floral notes too. The amber , patchouli and vanilla are always nice additions.
Definitely the brand is going into right direction , i’m looking forward to try Caravansérail Intense.
My favorite Parfums de Nikolai fragrances are :
    1. Vanille Tonka
    2. Cuir Cuba Intense
    3. New York Intense
Thanks a lot, all profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg

  • I don’t have much experience with this house, but those fragrances from Nicolai that I did try are top quality and have above average sillage and longevity. Looking at the notes in this one, I am sure is going to be a hit.
I am in the EU. Thank you!

  • Interestingly, Patricia de Nicolaï’s perfumes come out once a year (rarely I would say), and how thoughtful and magnificent they are! Michelyn`s introduction says that Patricia was inspired by her trips to the Middle East, I love that she pays tribute to these places. I know what Arabic coffee is and I can’t wait to compare my experience with the perfume that Patricia has created. From Steven’s review, I realized that this fragrance is moderately gourmand, as spices, especially cardamom, combined with coffee, give this unforgettable aroma of Turkish coffee, and resinous amber-tonka notes make this perfume moderately sweet and balsamic. According to the description, this should be a perfect coffee-spicy fragrance.
I left a comment under the announcement article but it is 33rd 🙂 Nevermind, I enjoyed the introduction!
    Greetings from Belgium!

  • Addition to my previous comment: my most favorite from Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur is creamy iris of Baikal Leather Intense!

  • What a lovely giveaway.
I appreciate Michelyn’s introduction as I knew very little of Nicolaï – though what I have smelled in samples from friends was always beautiful. So I liked getting more info from Michelyn, including the quote from the Patricia on the fragrance inspiration. Caravansérail sounds so wonderful and delicious.
Steven’s video was informative for getting a sense of the notes, such as how the cardamon performs, as that is a note I am always interested in and seems hard to find it blend well on my skin.
Thank you for the giveaway, from Canada

I absolutely loved the introduction of Michelyn’s history and journey as a perfumer and traveler. Michelyn’s story is very intriguing and heightened my interest in wanting to try/have this fragrance. The introduction informed me of her passion & drive for perfumery and specifically Caravansérail Intense. Congratulations to her! I have never traveled to the Middle East, but I’ve seen plenty of documentaries and know the historical journey taken for spices and goods. The introduction painted the perfect picture and was informative. Like always, I enjoyed Steven’s review. He is a trusted source for perfumes, and he made this fragrance sound heavenly. I was looking for a rating from 1 to 10, but I’ll settle for his emphasis on how BEAUTIFUL, the fragrance is!

I live in New York and I have yet to try any Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur’s fragrances. Steven’s review is my introduction to the brand.

  • I’d love to try this fragrance inspired by a nice cup of arabian coffee. The notes sound extremely yummy. Plaudits to Steven and Michelyn for their youtube review and introduction respectively. Hopefully I can win this.

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Interesting Guerlain history. Surprising that as recently as the 80’s some didn’t feel women should be working. Happy she started her own line. I do like that she offers fragrances in smaller sizes as it takes me awhile to finish larger bottles. The raspberry note is interesting. Cardamom and coffee do go so well together. Love a fragrance that shifts and morphs. From the line, I like the 2 neroli’s and Violette in Love. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Caravansérail Intense sounds divine! I love that Michelyn highlights the challenges Patricia de Nicolaï faced in becoming a female perfumer – I love supporting independent female artists! I also like how Steven described this as more of an amber fragrance than a gourmand, since I prefer less sweet perfumes and love amber notes. Would love to win a bottle of this! I’m in MN, USA

  • The backround story of Patricia de Nicolai was really interesting and the description of the fragrance in Steve’s review also amazing. Iam a big fan of coffee, i have tasted before cardamon and coffee and the result is amazing, so iam sure(judging by the notes) the fragrance will be as well. My favorite is a fragrance that i smelled from a friend and it does wonders on her, Vanille Tonka is the name. I live in Greece,EU.

  • I’m always excited for a new Nicolai release!
Michelyn, thank you for the intro and quote from Patricia. NYI is one of my top 5.
Coffee cardamom and plum sounds mind blowing – Steven does a great job describing the ‘journey’ of this fragrance.
I need to get my nose on this!
    Thank you from Canada!

I truly hope to win a bottle of this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from this company yet, but I’m under the impression that I’d enjoy “New York Intense” and this one. I appreciate what Patricia de Nicolai had to say about this fragrance, and what she said about it only caused me to be very intrigued to try it. I can like coffee-centric fragrances a lot, and this seems to be one of the better ones. I can like certain Guerlain fragrances and I like the reminder that Patricia is from that family. I appreciate when Steven says this fragrance has good performance, that it’s non-linear, and that it’s unique. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Patricia de Nicolaï’s story is inspiring, achieving such success in perfumery despite the resistance of her family. Speaking to Caravansérail Intense, it seems like many interesting and well-composed coffee fragrances have released in the last few years, including a few that play off Arabic coffee’s mixture of coffee and cardamom. It’s a rich and fruitful starting point for woody gourmonds. The note that stands out in Caravansérail Intense is the plum and raspberry component; I’m sure it plays off the fruitier, wine-like quality of coffee and balances out the sandalwood, patchouli, and immortelle mixture. Thanks for the introduction, Michelyn.

I like Steven started off his video by talking about the coffee and cardamom combination in Turkish coffee. It really is a delicious pairing. He also pointed out Caravansérail Intense is more of an amber than a gourmond, which makes it more appealing to me. Even better, Steven highlighted how long-lasting this fragrance is, and the spice to warm amber and vanilla progression. Sounds terrific.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur perfumes. I responded to your earlier announcement with a comment. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’ll try my luck. Always been following Parfums de Nicolai soince I smelled NY intense in the perfume store. I could not get myself to pull the trigger yet I could not forget about it. Have come across other perfumes from the house and I have to admit the quality is there. By reading the intro here and watching the notes breakdown I would be glad to get my nose on this one also. Doha, Qatar.

  • What a nice introduction, I like how Michelyn let us know about how Patricia de Nicolai started her long, and successful career. Surely it wasn’t easy for her being ignored by the Guerlain family, at least for the part of becoming a Guerlain perfumer herself.
Unquestionably she showed all her friends, family, doubters that not giving her a chance was a wrong move , now we have Parfums de Nikolai , far-famed name on its own.
I have a feeling cold Winter will still upon us , and Caravansérail is the ideal solution , welcoming and comfy cardamom coffee fragrance.
Caravansérail is like a romantic , getaway vacation in the MiddleEast , exactly what I need at the moment.
Angelys Pear is my favorite Parfums de Nikolai, watery , slightly tart pear , fresh rose and positive emotions type of scent.
    Thanks for the draw

I loved Michelyn’s introduction and Steven’s YouTube review on Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Caravansérail Intense. It’s sad learning in Michelyn’s intro learning Patricia de Nicolaï is the great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain and niece of Jean-Paul Guerlain, the last family member to run the House of Guerlain and them not approving of her working in perfumery as a perfumer and all the hard work she has done since the 1980s to become successful. Based on Steven’s review and the creative process interview with Patricia de Nicolai I am reassured that I would like this warm and spicy coffee based fragrance with resinous and ambery base that sounds truly divine. My favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur perfume is Vanille Tonka. I am one of the readers that responded to the announcement. I am from the USA.

Thanks for the great review Michelyn and Steven.

Michelyn’s writeup on this famous perfumer with links to the house of Guerlain was a good read. We are lucky to have her in the perfumer world. I also learnt a new word – caravanserai

Steven’s review was a great introduction to this fragrance. He is so right about the combination of cardamom and coffee never getting old. It’s nice to hear that this stands unique in the cardamom coffee perfume category.

I think New York and Angelys PEar are my two favourites from this house.

    Greetings everyone
Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur is renowned and well respected brand in France, with 6 or 7 boutiques in Paris alone, and I’m very much intrigued by the sophisticated and grown up Caravansérail.
I knew Ms Nicolaï is related to Guerlain, but not how they never allowed her to follow the path of a perfumer. Through consistency and hard work she achieved her moral triumph, I’m happy for her , and her success.
Caravansérail i like because of the coffee, cardamom, all other spices , and Ms Camen and Mr Gavrielatos fondness for the fragrance.
At the end of the week all go to one of the two Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur i like to visit, the one on 69 avenue Raymond Poincaré Paris 16th , the main boutique as far as i know , or the one on 45 rue des Archives Paris 3rd , the only one open on Sunday , and try Caravansérail
Vanille Intense , Bois Bélize Intense I own , Cuir Cuba Intense I’ll most likely buy too.
Thank you , American living in Paris France

  • Our beloved Cafleurebon tag-team Michelyn and Steven took me on a journey, this time to Middle East , and ancient Persia.
I know Caravansérail was building that used to welcome wealthy merchants, and pilgrims along the roads , and sometimes the cities.
The fragrance is like a Scheherazade like story with Arabic coffee, plum , cardamom and lots of mysticism.
Patricia de Nicolai is like Michelyn called her once the first Lady Boss of Niche perfumery, I admire her, and her accomplishments
One of my father’s signature scents is New York Intense , I like the way it smells.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Wonderful reviews Michelyn and Steven! What I enjoyed about Michelyn’s introduction was how she emphasizes how Nicolai defied gender stereotypes and expectations to create her own independent perfume house. What I enjoyed about Steven’s youtube review is how he describes the melange of spices as mainly cardamom front and center but with the array of clove, cinnamon, tonka, and immortelle supporting on a secondary and tertiary level. That was so descriptive and expressive and sounds like the perfect combination in a fragrance.

My favorite Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur perfume is Odalisque. I commented on the original post as well so please count this entry twice! I live in the US in New York.

  • Michelyn and Steven!!! What a Fantastic Review! ❤️ Reading about the Amazing history and connections involved with Nicolaï is always addictive! I love many Nicolaï fragrances, like New York Intense, for example. I’m SO excited to experience Caravansérail Intense! I have been looking for a Great coffee fragrance lately and wow… this one sounds so Fantastic! Michelyn always has the best interviews and Patricia really describes such a beautiful journey making the fragrance. Steven, as always, gives a detailed look at the experience of wearing this complex and lovely scent. This fragrance is going to the Top of the list! Thank you so much for the Great information! This sounds very good!
