Elizabeth and James fashions and accessories are at once relaxed and comfortable, edgy and contemporary, reflecting the personalities of the twin owner-designers, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen.  The brand was founded in 2007 and named after the Olsen’s younger siblings, the sophisticated Elizabeth and the laid back James.

In collaboration with perfumers Pierre Negrin (Amouage X, the man knows his roses) and Honorine Blanc (Eric Butterbaugh Regal Tuberose), the fashion house  introduced its first fragrance duo in 2013 – Nirvana Black and Nirvana White.

Following Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s design aesthetic, these two perfumes reconcile diverse styles of scent, blurring the lines between designer, niche and celebrity fragrances, housed in a flacon styled like a vintage clutch.

In early August another set of fragrance twins – Nirvana Rose and Nirvana Bourbon – was launched online for Sephora VIB Rouge clients exclusively and will be instore and Sephora.com August 19.  The duo will be available at other retailers in spring of 2017. I have yet to try the Bourbon(look for our review soon)  but love the Nirvana Rose.

I relish many rose fragrances, including pure Persian rose oil, heavy middle-eastern mukhallats and stylized or realistic rose perfumes of all kinds.  Experiences with perfumes and flowers in the garden have given me a pretty good idea of what I prefer a rose fragrance to smell like.  Nirvana Rose works perfectly for me, bringing a fresh, invigorating approach to an old nostalgic favorite, Rosa centifolia – also known as Provence Rose, Rose de Mai or the Cabbage Rose.

Rosa centifolia, the hundred petalled rose, has tightly packed, thin flower petals, not unlike the leaves of a cabbage, forming heavy, cup shaped blooms that nod and droop on the stems.  These roses first appeared in the 16th and 17th centuries when Dutch hybridizers combined species roses with the ancient damascene (Damascus) hybrid.  The resulting flowers became favorites of contemporary Dutch still life painters and botanical illustrators.  The intensity of the fragrance seems to vary slightly with the color of the bloom (white through deep purple), but the scent profile remains the same.

The Cabbage Rose has a livelier, fresher scent than its damascene parent.  Nirvana Rose, sultry and ever so slightly dark, is imbued with this same lively quality. The supporting notes of geranium and vetiver add green, spicy, vegetal facets to the fragrance, creating a slight impression of astringent, bitter rose leaves.  As the perfume dries it morphs into woody incense touched with a suggestion of vanilla and light floral musk.

Nirvana Rose has a dark side, although it never veers into ‘goth’” territory. It manages to avoid the “sweet” stickiness I find in many Damascus rose oils and waters.  The EdP is extremely wearable with eight hours of longevity on clothing and at least six on skin. Sillage is rather discreet. I can spritz on impulse and not worry about overwhelming myself or anyone else. Unisex, yes!  Office friendly – yes! Sultry – yes! Nirvana Rose is a rose for all occasions and for all seasons.

Disclosure: I received my sample thanks to Elizabeth and James Nirvana. Opinions are my own.

I have read about Nirvana Rose being similar to many niche rose fragrances and this reviews confirms it. It is centered on rose but it has incency, woody elements as well and it is not just a rose centered fragrance but has dark sides, too although the review says it never completely goes goth. Seems like it is an all-weather fragrance. Thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Yum! Another rose to try. I love roses and rose perfumes. I love the accompanying photos. And, the brief history of cabbage roses. I live in the USA and would love to win Nirvana Rose.

  • I was given a strip of this at Sephora – I immediately liked it, I like most roses but was surprised by nice it was. Seems like a nice scent for work, or out, or home on a rainy day with a book. I like the comment that it never veers ‘goth’ which solidifies my interest. I hope this one will be my favorite Elizabeth and James perfume. Thank you for the draw.

  • Another rose lover here, always willing and wanting to try a new rose. I have to admit that I probably wouldn’t have take an Olsen twins frag seriously, but this review opens my eyes and makes me take notice! I’m very interested in the rose/vetiver combination, and appreciated the descriptions of the smell of different roses. A most serious review. Thanks for it and the drawing! Cheers.

  • Unisex, Office Friendly…sultry ? YES!!!!! and Rose to boot. Rose lover here in many different ways, dark, fresh, green even one with a little oud. The Elizabeth and James Black is a really well done sandalwood fragrance which is wonderful for cooler weather. Also very well done and also wears nicely. I am excited to possibly get to try this one. Thanks for the fab draw and I am in the US.

  • I really enjoyed the scent description and bit of history about the cabbage rose. Love roses and am very excited to try this scent! My favorite E & J perfume is Nirvana Black. In the US. Thanks for the draw!

I have deluxe samples of both Black and White. I really like them both. I’m also a big fan of rose fragrances, especially when they have a deeper, sexier quality to them. Nirvana Rose sounds awesome and I can’t wait to test it out in Sephora.

  • Great review….I love rose scents but didn’t appreciate the differences among types of roses. I liked E&J Nirvana Black and would love to try this scent…the bourbon scent also interests me. Got to get to Sephora!

  • I have been wearing nirvana white all summer and love black in the fall.
While bourbon was the Elizabeth and James I thought I would prefer Rose sounds like a must have. The olsens are really talented designers and I think they must have a lot of input into their perfumes
My favorite part of the review was the very detailed explanation of rose centiolia and how the colors can change but the scent profile is the same
    Lovely

  • Loved the review. I liked learning about the history of the roses in perfume. I think I would love this perfume – I love Nirvana Black and White both – and think this will make a wonderful addition to their line. I can’t wait for the review on Bourbon!

  • I love rose scents and would love to try this one. I very muh enjoy Nirvana Black from their previous collection. I am in the USA.

  • I have never tried an Elizabeth and James fragrance, but the description of the Rose sounds lovely. I did not realize different colors of roses could all have the same scent. i would love to try this fragrance. I live in the USA. thank you.

  • I’m a huge fan of their perfumes. Both black and white are Beautiful and great finds in the mainstream market. And the dry shampoos in the scents!
Rose is definitely a fragrance you can go wrong with- but I’m Not afraid of it! Can’t wait to try!

  • I love roses but struggle a bit with rose perfumes. I wonder is this could be the one for me? I love the color if the bottle! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • I love how the review mentions the Dutch hybridizers and the discussion on roses, that’s why I love this site — the reviews are so interesting. It’s very ‘cultural’ instead of purely dry info/content. I was actually researching this perfume line a while, ago, how funny that I hear about it today here!! I am also an enormous fan of their clothing line, it’s so beautiful and clean looking.

I love how different rose perfumes can be. I love Nirvana White myself. [I’m in the USA.]

  • I like the description of the Dutch paintings of roses for this scent in the review and I am intrigued by Gail’s description of Nirvana Rose avoiding the “sweetness” of other rose scents. I hope to smell this one. Thank you for the drawing entry!

  • I have a love/hate thing with rose perfumes. I like that you said it’s fresh and lively and almost goth. I’m reading that as it might not turn sour or moldy on me. I’m in the US. Thanks.

Rose scent was my mom’s favorite…I do not usually try rose scents but have every so often. Elizabeth & James (the twins great line) has almost something for most of us. I am especially fond of Nirvana Rose (love the name).
As with all CFB reviews, the description is very helpful in telling the story of the scent. Nice review Gail.
USA and thanks for generous draw.

  • Woo Hoo!! Another rose lover here. I have been hiding under a rock because I had no idea that Elizabeth and James had any connection with the Olsen twins….where have I been? I LOVE Nirvana Black. I can’t wait to try this one and I loved learning about cabbage rose. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • Wow! Great review. It seems to be a great rose based fragrance. I had never heard of this brand before but now I piqued interest. The bottle is wonderful very elegant and stylish fragrance to follow the same line already won my heart. The name Nirvana Rose is very creative.
I’m in the U.S. and thanks for the draw!
