New Perfume Review: DSH Perfumes Chinchilla (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) + Old Hollywood Glamour Draw

Think of chinchilla and you might immediately recall old George Hurrell photos of movie stars wrapped in glamorous grey and white cocoons, gazing come-hither into the camera. While the white room in the background is filled with lilies, gardenias, roses and gladiolas, the scent of the dazzling siren in the image is musky, honeyed, seductive. It is Chinchilla by DSH Perfumes.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, Cafleurebon’s Perfumer of the Year 2015 (along with Geza Schoen), has created a retro-style oriental in Chinchilla which hearkens back to the sexy animalic perfumes of the 1930s, such as Weil’s Secret de Venus. If you’ve ever inhaled the aroma of vintage fur, its luxurious scent is unmistakable if hard to define: densely musky while almost woody with an undertone of ambergris.  Chinchilla captures this redolence with eye-opening accuracy.

Despite an absence of wood in the listed notes, Chinchilla starts with the same sensation as breathing in old fur and combines it with flowery, waxy honey. Anyone who has ever dabbed on one of the great orientals from the 40s or 50s will recognize that woody, dusty top note. This often lasts for a good half hour, as it does with Chinchilla. Smelling the perfume in its early stages, it is hard to believe it was created in 2016.

While the vintage feel of Chinchilla never diminishes, it is very much a honey perfume. During the middle stage, Chinchilla’s retro quality takes a back seat in the limousine to honey and beeswax. After the opening begins to recede, an amalgam of seamless floral and mossy notes merge to create a velvety backdrop for the honey. About 20 minutes in, the honey becomes the star. Honey is a feisty note in perfumery; so often, it turns sugary or urinous. Here, the balance is delicious: rich but not overly sweet, animalic without tipping into vulgarity.

As it enlarges, the syrupy notes are matched by a dark, filtered musk. This is Veronica Lake sulkily eating honey from a jar as she waits for Joel McCrea.

Wearing Chinchilla is like stepping back to a time when nice girls in evening gowns wore naughty perfumes to soirees. Lie back on a velvet divan littered with silk pillows, dim the lights and wait for your leading man to kiss your neck.

Notes: Africa stone tincture, ambrette seed, bergamot, Brazilian vetiver, brown oakmoss, Carnation, castoreum, centifolia rose absolute, cinnamon leaf, civet, French beeswax, gardenia, honey, musk, spikenard, tonka bean, white pepper.

Disclaimer: I received my sample from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. –Thank you. Chinchilla has above average longevity and above sillage. My opinions are my own.

  • This sounds amazing! I have a wee sample of Secret de Venus and it is one of my favorites! I haven’t had a chance to explore this line yet – this would be a perfect one to start with!

  • I have lately been really in love with honey as a note. Add to that additional animalic facets and Chinchilla sounds perfect. Thank you and DSH Perfumes for offering this generous draw.

  • I love Greta Garbo and I love Dawn Hurvitz! I gave worn her perfumes for years and given them for gifts. My favorite is Cardamon and Khypri–a spicy oriental that always feels wonderful!

  • Honey and a dark, filtered musk along with images of Marilyn, Veronica and Loretta make Chinchilla sound seductive, glamorous and appealing. I love the thought of stepping back to a time when nice girls in evening gowns wore naughty perfumes to soirees! Carol Lombard is one of my favorite old Hollywood sirens and Inner Sanctum my favorite DSH perfume. Thanks for the lovely review and generosity of Dawn and CaFleurebon, I’m in the US.

I am intrigued by it because Chinchilla has been intrigued by the animalic classics of the early 20th century. In addition, it has bold honey note which was also a major player in Schiaparelli’s classic Shocking. My favorite Hollywood icon is Audrey Hepburn and my favorite DSH creation is Mata Hari. I am in the US.

  • You had me at honey perfume….I like certain perfumes with honey…..probably one of my favorites is Mac Africanimal..I also adore Botrytis Gunested…honey can be a difficult note to pull off for me, but Dawns perfume sounds divine and cozy. Jeanne Crain is one of the beautiful old Hollywood actresses that I love. I am in the US. Please please enter me.

  • What a yummy sounding perfume! I love the smell of honey and beeswax! My favorite Hollywood icon is Lauren Bacall. I live in the US.

Nice review & I would like to wrap in this newly created Chinchilla by DSH to get into mischievous childhood with sweet honey & mossy smell. My favorite Old Hollwood Glamour icon is Marilyn Monroe. Prince, Viridian and Kohl Gris are my favorite from DSH perfumes.
Thanks to the generosity of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz and DSH Perfumes for the draw. Would like to participate by giving my relative address in NY, US.

  • Sounds utterly decadent! I love honeys and orientals. And I have to say that my favourite icon would be Katherine Hepburn – although I imagine she would smell less like chinchilla and more like leather, hay and clean soap. I haven’t yet tried any DSH perfumes as they are tricky to find where I live, but they all sound divine! I am in the UK but have a US address, so either prize would be fantastic!

  • I’m very excited to try this new one from Dawn! The idea of an animalic, “furry” honey appeals to me very much. My favorite Hollywood icon is the indomitable Marilyn Monroe. My favorite DSH perfume, which I will hopefully never be without, is Vert Pour Madame. Thanks for the draw! I live in U.S.

  • I very like this review. Chinchilla sounds very interesting from the review. I would like to try it. Thanks for the draw. (EU)

I always spray vintage fragrances when I watch old movies. This review with its description of the honey and musky notes made me think about which movie I’d watch while wearing Chinhilla. I’d probably watch something pre-code, maybe “Red Dust” with one of my favorites, Jean Harlow.
    I like DSH Michelangelo.
    I live in the USA.

  • Lauryn makes this sound like the Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard – esque perfume I’ve been looking for! All honey but with a layer of something dangerous underneath. I love how Cafleurebon chooses to review perfumes that I really wouldn’t hear about otherwise. My fave old Hollywood star is Joan Crawford for sure – no one can beat Mildred Pierce. I live in Canada, thank you for the draw!

  • Well you had me at densely musky, woody, with ambergris undertones! Never tried a DSH perfume so this is the perfect time to give it a go. Mae West is my fave “old” dame, I live in London, UK. Thanks for the draw

  • I love animalic perfumes and the way Laurtn tied the review of Chinchilla to old Hollywood photos and Weil perfume
The line that staid with me is that it is hard to believe that it was made in 2016
Grace Kelly is my favorite and Le smoking from DSH Perfumes

Flowery-waxy honey mixed with vintage fur was enough to draw me in, but the rest of the description of the scent sounds divine! I love the idea of honey being “animalic” but not slipping into vulgarity. This, coupled with my love of DSH scents, makes me so eager to try this. In her line, I’m a fan of the honeyed Mahjoun and the Passport a Paris (ode to Jicky basically). My favorite old Hollywood icon is Marlene Dietrich. Old glamorous movie stars in general, though, sure knew how to smolder! I’m in the US and thanks for the draw.

  • Ohhh DSH and Honey perfumes… two of my favorite things. I don’t have an old school glamour icon, but I do have a favorite DSH perfume- Passport au Paris. The photos from the article are super glam!

I am in the US, thanks as always for the lovely generous draws.

  • The feeling of smelling old fur and all this pictures of sexy and classy women from the 40’s …..love it!
    I’M in EU 😉

  • Dawn is just pure awesomness 🙂 I see the honey note is turning everyone on and i’m there too- is it an ancientness about honey? The ritual perhaps thats part of its creative journey? That Tonka sounds yummy as well but its Dawn we’re talking about here and there’s going to be surprises…and its gonna be good….I’m outside the US 🙂 Thanks for the draw and this lovely insight into
    Chinhilla

  • It’s nice that “glamour” is in the title of this article. Splendid and glamorous are probably the most often words that come to my mind when I read on or enjoy Dawn’s perfumes that have a retro vibe. Dawn is very proficient at conjuring up the atmosphere of her perfumes. Lauryn’s review creates and confirms the same atmosphere, too. I love her beautiful description of honey’s virtues in Chinchilla. I am very curious about the animalic aspects of Chinchilla. Love the fact that honey and civet are together in the perfume. Many DSH perfumes are among my favorites. My extra love belongs to Scent of Hope and Jacinthe de Sapphir. Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall are my favorite stars of old Hollywood. I am in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love all the glamorous photos of old Hollywood in this post! This new DSH sounds right up my alley with honey and animals together. I would love to try some! I live in the UAE.

  • I was already sold when I read “retro-style oriental” and reading the rest of the review didn’t disappoint! I am a HUGE fan of retro perfumes with animalistic notes, so this sounds fantastic. I’ve also been wearing another honey scent recently (Guerlain’s Rose Barbare) and am finding the note to really work with my chemistry. I’ll have to track down Chinchilla to test it out. My favorite star of the glamour era is Lauren Bacall. Such a classic sultry beauty! I could see her wearing this with a fur coat and nothing else. I have never had the chance to sample a DSH perfume, but have heard so many good things. I live in Canada, thank you.

I am not sure whether I like honey as a perfume note but after reading this review, I am dying to try Chinchilla. Love the image of nice young ladies in evening gowns wearing naughty perfumes. <3 I'm down with the velvet divan and silk pillows, but not sure Mr. Leading Man will lean in…never mind. Chinchilla sounds absolutely lovely. I am a big fan of Old Hollywood films and Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Sophia Loren, too. My favorite DSH perfumes are Rose Vert (wearing it today), Inner Sanctum, Cafe Noir, Cimabue and Le Smoking. I live in the US.

  • I love Garbo, can imagine her bathing in this fragrance. Chinchilla intrigues me because it sounds sexy but elegant all together. I” in Maryland USA and have warm fuzzies for Jitterbug because I met my DH while wearing it

  • I think haven’t smelled any perfume like this althougj I know a lot of typical flowery vintages. But wax, honey – this sounds interesting and I’d love to try this kind of old-fashioned perfume.

  • Animalic perfumes are a great mystery to me. Some of them I love, some are just impossible for me to stand on my skin (or on anyone else’s). The same applies to honey note. I am curious what type of fragrance is this and if I am going to feel good wearing it, as I am not a vintage elegance type of person. I live in Europe, thanks for the draw!

  • Lauryn and Michelyn… I think I melted (in the best possible way) somewhere along the line while reading this review of Chinchilla! 😀 Thank you so much for the perfect imagery and glorious writing to so beautifully conjure the fragrance for everyone. I am forever grateful. <3
