Dawn Spencer Hurwitz and Michelyn Camen co created Disco Queen

Perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz and ÇaFleureBon Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen have collaborated on numerous artistic projects over the years – Reveries de Paris in 2015 (inspired by Michelyn’s recollection of Paris as an art student), Project Talisman’s Become the Shaman (2017), Drama Queen (2021, for ÇaFleureBon’s 11th anniversary), Warrior Queen (our 12th anniversary) amongst them. This year ÇaFleureBon celebrated its 13th year (Michelyn’s lucky number), and Michelyn and Dawn wanted to evoke a more carefree era while maintaining a current relevance: Disco Queen. Both women spritzed themselves lavishly with Paco Rabanne’s Calandre at that time – and it relates the narrative of  Michelyn’s “first years after moving to Manhattan as a young executive by day and a dancing queen by night.” After the 9-to-5 stressful corporate day, a brief “disco nap” was all that was required before venturing out into the night to the toniest clubs – to dance into the wee hours at such discos as New York City’s Area and Limelight while sipping Bellinis. Michelyn lived up to the perfume’s name… she won a dance contest at the Limelight.

“ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen has had a prescient quality about it since Michelyn and I began working on it together last year. We both have a personal relationship with Calandre (created by Michael Hy) and wanted to reference the gorgeous metallic and glass tones evoked by this perfume in Disco Queen. And with the passing of Paco Rabanne earlier this year, it felt all the more right.” ~ Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

Under the shimmering disco ball, the club is a-buzz with palpable energy: laughter, drinking, smoking, shameless flirtation and dancing until either your breath or feet give out – whichever comes first.  Some clubs are so packed that it resembles a zombie jamboree (back to back, and belly to belly), but that deters no one. You’ll dance with anyone who crosses your path with equal enthusiasm under the throbbing rhythm of a disco beat and the dizzying reflections from that dazzling orb above. Working up a powerful thirst, you blithely slake it with as many peach-infused champagne Bellinis as it takes – and it can take any number, judging by your incessant pace. You may even decide to jump from club to club in an unofficial upscale pub crawl (although it’s actually more like a sprint, as you want to live every passing moment ardently ablaze).

ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen opens with a blindingly brilliant flash of aldehydes: they smell crystalline and metallic, with a silvery sheen – shiny, shiny bright. The acute nature of bergamot only serves to reinforce this impression. Dawn has composed a Bellini accord which is peach-fizzy, playful, and refreshing – followed by the floral bonhomie of Bulgarian rose and rose geranium (both floral and herbal), hyacinth, muguet, and indolic jasmine grandiflorum. Disco Queen is primarily an aldehydic fruity floral chypre; its base boasts sandalwood, vetiver and oakmoss – gentled with musk, benzoin Siam, and wisps of cedar and amber – but never to the point of weighing down the other aromatic components. While it is a diffusive, airborne fragrance, Disco Queen has impressive tenacity and significant sillage, which is perfectly in keeping with the big hair, padded shoulders, and bold fragrances for which the late 80s were renowned. It bears a degree of comparison with the legendary Calandre which inspired it – but Dawn and Michelyn’s collaboration is its own creature as well. To quote the perfumer: “As Spring opens its doors to the world again, Disco Queen comes in beaming with shimmering beauty and sweet delight; a perfect celebration!” A timely description for a modern scent with vintage sensibilities.

Notes: aldehydes, bergamot, Bellini accord, hyacinth, muguet, Bulgarian rose absolute, Egyptian rose geranium, grandiflorum jasmine, Virginia cedar, Australian sandalwood, Siam benzoin, amber, Brazilian vetiver, green oakmoss, musk

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • Everything appeals to me about ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen! I too had a similar experience of working as a business exec when I first moved to NYC while living a double life in dance — both in the studio and in clubs/lounges. And the description of the crystalline/metallic opening with bellini accord completely sold me; I sure do love chypre scents too. This sounds like a stunning winner.

  • Wow- that brings me back. I used to love Area and Limelight. And the Pyramid. We were poverty stricken kids back then and would go and sling back a couple of cheap beers at The Bar on 2nd before running over to either to dance. So many fun memories..

This review made me remember with pleasure and nostalgia the parties under the glittering disco ball when the club was full of palpable energy: laughter, drinking, smoking, shameless flirting and dancing. I am from EU

  • Love, love, love the huge fragrances of the 80s. The era of excess was like no other and this fragrance seems to encapsulate that idea. Aldehydes for days? Yes, please. Love the way they pop off the skin. I didn’t have my first real clubbing experiences until the late 90s so I have to live through stories. I’m sure this fragrance would help me envision was it was truly like. I live in VA, USA.

  • How unique and special this fragrance is appeals to me. I didn’t really go to discos. The intriguing facts appealed to me in Ida’s review. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

As a fan of bold aldehydic colognes this would be a must. I remember Calandre and I enjoyed it. I am happy to see Michelyn put her touch on it. I am also loving that is made bold with a great projection and sillage putting the club scene in mind. I am a fan of fruity floral aldehydic perfumes and this seems like it matches the best if the best. I would love to try it.

Aldehydes, ambers, and 80s party vibes?? I need this in my life! I didn’t get to experience the party myself but the energy and wild freedom of the picture painted is so very enticing and it’s beautiful that there is an ode to Paco Rabanne in the creation of this scent as well! • I loved reading the inspiration behind Disco Queen and Ida’s review. Although I wasn’t yet born, my mom always said I was born in the wrong decade. I love everything about the 70s, including Disco. I wish I could have experienced taking a “disco nap” while sipping Bellinis. It’s only appropriate that Disco Queen opens with a strong burst of aldehydes, reminiscent of all the lights and disco balls. A fizzy Bellini surrounded by flowers sounds feminine and beautiful, yet fun and carefree. The warm base notes must round out the composition beautifully. I love everything that Dawn does, so I am sure I would enjoy Disco Queen. One of my favorites from DSH is Bois Étincelants; I love the sparkling aldehydes and pink champagne. Therefore, I am very curious to smell Disco Queen and have no doubt I would enjoy it. I also love that Ida mentioned it has significant sillage, as I prefer strong scents. Thank you, Ida, for the great review, and thank you to Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz for the giveaway. I am located in the CONUS.

  • What a fantastic review! Here’s my favorite part.
ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen opens with a blindingly brilliant flash of aldehydes: they smell crystalline and metallic, with a silvery sheen – shiny, shiny bright.
The notes sound Gawjus. Thanks for the very generous giveaway, I live in the USA.
I think I remember going to Discos

  • How creative! I moved to Manhattan in 1985 and went to some of the same clubs. Fond memories also of Save The Robots and King Tut’s WaWa Hut! Ida’s review captures the vibe perfectly. The floral notes in Disco Queen are some of my favorite, and I love chypres as well as aldehydic florals. Thanks for doing this! I live in the US.

The last time I went to the disco/club was in Barcelona 2013, and boy was that a night to remember… This lively fragrance sounds wonderful…And aldehydes are something I adore in fragrance, especially the shiny, bright type 🙂 This bold Disco Queen could be the thing that gets me back on the dance floor.

  • I remember going to dance clubs when I was younger. The music was more techno/rave then disco but I’m sure the energy and fun level were the same. The Disco Queen collab between CaFleureBon and DSH sounds like a party in a bottle. The gorgeous florals and woody amber musk base has an effervescent aldehyde and bellini opening. It’s definitely a celebration of new beginnings and dancing (and yes, ABBA’s “Dancimg Queen” is playing in my head). MD, USA

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thanks for your review, Ida. Lovely as always. And congrats on another interesting CaFleureBon commission!
Seeing the name, I predicted there would be metalic-electric notes (likely, aldehydes) and bubbling peachy champagne accord. But I was surprised about the green florals such as hyacinth and muguet. Hyacinth is not a that common note nowadays, let alone being used in a bop image. I am even more curious when Ida mentions Calandre – I love Calandre but it is just too elegant for Disco! Oh, I am so eager to see how the disco spirit is interpretted!

  • I was not born early enough to be a disco goer, but I do love the music of the time! I watched So You Think You Can Dance for ages, and my favorite routines were always famed choreographer Doriana Sanchez’s disco routines 🙂 I love the bright, bold, flashy and expressive quality of the disco scene — all of which appear to be well-reflected in the composition of Disco Queen. As springtime blossoms in the US, I find myself craving aldehydic florals, and Disco Queen would perfectly fulfill that desire! Thanks for the draw.

  • I love the emphasis on the shine and metallic nature of this fragrance, tempered by more herbal and earthy notes! It’s also so special that this serves as a sort of homage to Paco Rabanne. Ida did an incredible job really capturing the energy of a dance club and how that’s reflected in this scent. The heyday of NYC discos was perhaps before my time but I do enjoy stepping out to a club every now and then, particularly as the weather warms up, as it currently is doing! I am located in New York, in the US.

I LOVE this bottle! And have fond memories of disco days and really trying to learn the steps. Ida’s review is a disco ball of notes and adventure. Fragrance sounds like so much fun. I live in NY.

  • Outstanding review by Ida. I have never been to a disco but I do like disco music. What I like about ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen is the notes of aldehydes metallic bright opening that makes me think of a disco ball spinning lights everywhere listening to Dancing Queen by Abba. Thanks for the opportunity. Greetings from the USA.

  • I am a lover of Dawn’s creations, and I have owned a couple of her aldehyde perfumes, and she knows how to create these! I came of age in the disco era, and big perfumes were all there were. I was not a fan in the 90s of the turn to watery, neutral perfumes in the mass market! I would love to experience what new treasure Dawn and Michelyn have created! I am in the USA

  • Excellent review, Ida. I like how Dawn and Michelyn captured the pulsing low-light dancefloor with metallic aldehydes, and the Bellini accord is a nostalgic reference to Calandre and fond memories of ’90s nights out. (A little before my time to appreciate nightlife.) And while those elements are surely quite sweet, I assume the woody, complex base balances that aspect out and give it some additional texture. Disco Queen sounds like a riot.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • I wasn’t aware that Michelyn was an award winning dancer !! Ida created the perfect image of the disco universe – the lights, the crowds, the sounds, and so on. I have heard so much of DSH perfumes, but have yet to try one. Have checked out Michelyn’s collabs with Sarah Cartney of 4160 Tuesdays and would love to try out ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen. Interesting also to read how it takes inspiration from Paco Rabanne’s Calandre. Not much experience with discos as so eloquently describe by Ida. Curious about the Bellini accord!! Thanks for the review and draw. In CONUS.

  • Really interesting collab after the recent pirate queen one. I’m quite sad to have missed out on the disco era, but glad to see it immortalized through this fragrance. I’m interested in the crystalline and metallic opening that this fragrance opens with and how it fades or shifts. From TX, USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I used to go dancing at Limelight in New York City all the time in the 1980s. There was something so decadent about drinking champagne and dancing in the altar of the club–it used to be a church before it was a disco (and isn’t it a high-end fitness center now?). The Bellini accord that Dawn developed is genius. I think that accord plus the rose, jasmine and sandalwood sounds joyful and fun. Disco teen is the perfect fragrance for having the best night of your life, even if now it’s just a kitchen disco.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the wonderful review, Ida.

Loved getting a little insight into this fragrance and into the wild and energetic world of the eighties.

I like the idea of this fragrance opening with a metallic zing to capture that essence of a disco ball reflecting little facets of light everywhere. The use of a Bellini accord (a drink I’ve never tried) is pretty neat and I assume it contributes nicely to the chypre structure.

Also enjoy the fact that this is a big/bold fragrance, keeping with the style from that era.

I was unfortunately born waaay after the disco era.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Lovely review Ida! What appeals to me about ÇaFleureBon X DSH Perfumes Disco Queen is the “blindingly brilliant flash of aldehydes”. I am a big fan of aldehydes in fragrance and think they get such a bad reputation. Aldehydes after all are not all powdery, heavy, and artificial. I particularly love fragrance that incorporate sharp crystaline and crisp aldehydes, so Disco Queen definitely appeals to me in that regard.

I did not go to the discos of the 70’s but I have been to the more modern iterations of clubs in New York! I live in the US.
