Nest Fragrances Cocoa Woods ~ New Perfume Review + Sequoia and Chocolate Draw

In June, Nest Fragrances released Cocoa Woods, a new eau de parfum honoring and celebrating perseverance through adversity. Inspired by Nest Fragrances owner Laura Slatkin’s personal life challenges, Cocoa Woods is the 12th Eau de Parfum created for the Nest Fine Fragrance range. I love that Nest Fragrances uses top tier Master Perfumers such as Christophe Laudamiel and Rodrigo Flores-Roux  to create scents that are interesting, compelling, easy wearing, flat-out lovely and very importantly, totally affordable. Cocoa Woods in keeping with Nest tradition is created by yet another world class perfumer Jerome Epinette

Nest Fragrances Cocoa Woods is a 360 degree turn in a different and wonderful direction from the previous release last February; the luminous and beautiful Wisteria Blue. Exploring the genre coined “Neo-gourmand”, Nest Fragrances Cocoa Woods, is essentially a smooth-as-butter creamy sandalwood and cedar-ish bon-bon enrobed in a luscious bittersweet dry cocoa powder. It may sound a bit curious but trust me when I say that it works exceedingly well. Having grown up in Northern California surrounded by Sequoias/Giant Redwoods, I am quite intimate with their dry, sweet, and fusty smelling soft bark, as well as the bitter astringent vibrant green of the needles.

That wood forest loamy smell is a perfect foil for the rich chocolate fragrance with its own woody-sweet and slightly acid coffee notes. I love how the beautiful wood notes (one of my favorites) plays off of the cocoa, almost like spooning a fine 80% Scharfenberger dark cocoa powder with a handmade aromatic cedar wooden spoon. These two notes are entwined as finely as a DNA strand, each providing their best attributes while maintaining their own scented autonomy, dancing and swirling as closely and intimately as a pair of sensual tango partners at the end of a night-long Milonga. I can absolutely see rocking this fragrance best in the cooler weather rather than the humid hot days of summer, and for that very reason Nest Fragrances Cocoa Woods  will be sitting front and center on my desk just waiting for the weather to turn, which here in the great Pacific Northwest is only about 8 weeks away. Crazy as it may sound, I can’t wait! Notes: Bittersweet cocoa, Sequoia wood accord, Tiaré blossom, Thai ginger, White Sandalwood

Disclosure: Many thanks to Nest for the sample. The opinions are my own.

  • I absolutely adore the nest and Cocoa Woods bottle picture by Robert. Yes this seems to be a cooler weather fragrance. I own many Nest perfumes, as I love the brand.I discovered that Citrine is fabulous for layering. In the USA. Thank you for this generous draw.

Nest fragrances are so accessible and I love their packaging. I’ve been a Nest follower since the beginning and have tried every one of their offerings up to this one. I have been checking our local Sephora regularly but Cocoa Woods hasn’t yet made its way out to all retail yet. I love gourmands, especially those with cocoa notes, and a ‘woody’ cocoa will be an interesting new trail off the beaten path for me to explore. It does seem the neo-gourmand concept is currently trending, as I’ve seen several reference recently to upcoming scents that strike a balance between edible and some other category. My favorite Nest fragrance is Paradise. I live in the US and thank you for this draw.

The combination of cocoa and cedar wood sounds fantastic. I imagine sitting by the window on a cold winter morning, wrapped in a cashmere pashmina, watching the snow fall and sipping some hot cayenne-cocoa for warmth and comfort. Cocoa Woods would be the perfect complement to it. I like Citrine from the line. I am in the USA. Thanks for the draw.

Excellent review by Robert! Cocoa Woods sounds amazing….what is better than cocoa and cedar wood? A friend of mine bought this recently and she raves about it….she says it’s the best in the line. I can see wearing Cocoa Woods in front of the fireplace wrapped in a cashmere throw with a glass of wine and a good book. I am glad that this is an affordable offering. My favorites from the line are Midnight Fleur, Black Tulip, and Dahlia & Vines. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • I have not tried Nest but I would love to. Thank you Robert for the interesting article! Scharfenberger chocolate and Cedar. Wow. Thank you for the draw. I live in the us.

  • Gillian McNulty says:

I love Nest fragrances, and own two. Midnight Fleur is one of my favorite scents, and Black Tulip is amazing too.

Some of my favorite trips have been up to Northern California, so I enjoyed the review because I love scents that remind me of that. If it’s mixed with a dry chocolate, even better! Yes, I do think that Neo-gourmands are becoming a trend, and chocolate seems to a note often used as well as coffee.

Thank you for the giveaway. I live in the US.

  • Sounds yummy! I love the smell of loamy woods and cocoa. I bet they smell terrific together. I live in the US. Very generous draw!

  • Linnea Wiedeman says:

Beautiful bottle. Love the scent of cocoa and cedar always reminds me of home where I grew up on an island in Puget sound. Thank you for a chance at the draw. I live in the U.S.

  • Great review, Robert! I agree with you, this does sound like a fabulous scent for fall. I love that loamy earth scent. Top it with cocoa….heavenly!!

  • Creamy sandalwood bon bon. I think I need this. This would be a wonderful cooler weather fragrance and we have plenty of that here in Wisconsin. I think the Nest bottles ard cute and my favorite is the Nest Amazon Lily. I own the body cream and perfume and its lasts hours on me. Thanks for the yummi review. I am in the US.

  • Thanks for the review, Robert! Cocoa Woods sounds absolutely amazing! I love how detailed your description was! I’ve never tried anything by Nest Fragrances, but would love to give some of them a try. Love that bottle design, also. I think neo-gourmands are here to stay.

So exciting!! I’ve been looking for a cocoa fragrance that isn’t juvenile. I hope this is the one. Gourmands are one of my favorite types of fragrance, but often they sadly go into ‘sugar land”. Hopefully more daring perfumers will take a twist on the gourmand. I don’t have a favorite Nest…..yet. I can’t wait to try this at my local Sephora if I’m not a lucky winner. Thanks for the chance. US.

  • Scented Hound says:

Just knowing that I could be wearing a wonderful scent that honors and celebrates perseverance through adversity certainly has my vote! Thank you for offering something comforting in a beautiful bottle for the cooler months ahead. With the exception of citrus, which I enjoy, I have not been introduced to the Gourmand family of scents. This would be my first. My Whippet hound insisted that she help me type this. (Food item, you know how it is…!) Robert, you always manage to get a giggle out of me with your fantastic descriptions! Thank you for this opportunity! Waving from California!

  • Harbinger says:

I love how Robert described the notes of this fragrance. My favorite Nest is Black Tulip. I am in the US

  • I never had the chance to try anything from this house but that bottle looks so so good, just wonderful. I would love to give this a try .

  • I smelled this in sephora and loved it. Perfect for fall. I’m a fan of Nest fragrances and the artwork on their black bottles. I own White Sandalwood and Verde and would love to add Cocoa Woods to my collection. It’s warm cocoa but without going into teenage girl sugar territory. I’m in the USA.

  • I’m eating chocolate right now. My Sephora didn’t have this new one to smell. My favorite Nest is the White Sandalwood. US

  • I enjoyed how Robert related to the fragrance stating, “…having grown up in Northern California surrounded by Sequoias/Giant Redwoods” that he was familiar with the beautiful smell. Fantastic review!

  • Jake smith says:

Great article! I have sampled the whole lone of nest fragrances at sephora and I like them alot. I believe there were 2 that I almost got my girlfriend but she wanted chloe so I got her that one. This one sounds really good in love a good chocolate fragrance and sandalwood is one of my all time favorite notes. Keep up the good work! I am in the USA in AZ.

  • Except for the beautiful bottles, I didn’t know anything about the Nest line and its’ history. I appreciate the inspiration for this perfume that honors perseverance through adversity. I see it in my special needs students every day .Love the image of Cocoa Woods in the nest. Thank you for the draw.

  • Just enjoyed this article with a bulletproof coffee to which I had added some cocoa. This review made me look forward to cooler fall days and this perfume sounds like it would be perfect to wear then. Gourmands do seem to be a trend, although I generally tend to avoid them because they make me hungry… USA – Thanks for the great draw!

  • ooh, I love chocolate, but have not like it much in quite sweet, gourmandy fragrances, and I also love woody scents, so yes, this should be lovely for fall! thank you for the draw! in the US

  • I definitely agree with Robert that this sounds like a great scent for fall! Cocoa and sandalwood sound like a perfect match. My favorite Nest fragrance is Black Tulip but I think Cocoa Woods has the potential to unseat it! I’m in the US – thanks for the review and draw.

  • I LOVE Nest fragrances. This one sounds so beautiful. I absolutely love sandalwood and also love cocoa. I also need to try Wisteria. I have Verde and Black Tulip and Moss and Mint. I wish Moss and Mint was still available for purchase.

Thank you for the opportunity .

  • Marianne Miller says:

I just sampled this at Sephora this morning and immediately liked it. As I was reading this review, I kept sniffing my arm and loving the whiffs I was getting. As I was reading, I found myself saying (not out loud, Whew!), “yes, I really want this!” 🙂

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Really like the combination of notes and absolutely the packaging and love cocoa.
Id love to try this out.

    Thanks

  • jeremyn87 says:

I like that this doesn’t sound very edible. Cocoa notes can be kind of difficult for me if it’s too gourmandy, but when it just adds a bit of an edible touch to a fragrance, I really like it. Im not really familiar with other Nest fragrances, and not sure about neo-gourmands. I’m in the US. Thanks

  • I am always intrigued by scents with coffee notes as I am such a coffee drinking fiend and am beguiled by the smell. I have never tried any Nest fragrances so am excited to try this one! I”m in the U.S. Thank you for the review Robert.

  • I am so excited about this new release by NEST! I cannot wait to test it out! I definitely plan to buy it, no matter what. It will definitely end up being my go-to for the cooler months. It sounds AMAZING! I love cocoa notes. This is going to be a must have for me!!
    I live in the US.

  • The mere mention of sequoias makes me want to pack up for a trip to the PNW, but in the meantime I’d settle for a whiff of woody-chocolate perfume. I, too, am waiting for the weather to turn, but in the mid-Atlantic we have a long slog left through the dog days of summer, lol. I’ve smelled a lot of woody chocolate perfumes, mostly from indie and natural perfumers, and I’d be curious to sniff Nest’s take on the genre. Chocolate wood is definitely a sub-category of its own in the “neo-gourmand” genre. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • Great reviews D I like the idea of dark chocolate not sweet and Woody notes. I love nest fragrances especially Black Tulip and midnight Fleur
    Lovely art too
