“Velvet skin

fortuitous RENCONTRE.” For Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours by Perfumer Julien Rasquinet (2012).

This year, Naomi Goodsir, (French FIFI Expert Award Winner 2018 for an Independent Brand) celebrates ten years of creative freedom since the launch of Cuir Velours in 2012 and it seems as relevant today as ever. Discovering Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours in Milan during Esxence this year was quite the revelation and indeed a ‘fortuitous rencontre.’ Ms Goodsir and M. Coutaudier are a tour de force  with their flair as  exceptional creative directors of parfums.  As with her haute couture, Naomi Goodsir’s eponymous brand of  artistic fragrances reflect a unique aesthetic. To enlist Julien Rasquinet so early on in his career as a perfumer (prior to his appointment at IFF) was certainly an exceptional decision and one of great foresight.

“Cuir Velours (leather) by Julien Rasquinet is a deep and textured perfume, that evocatively encases the skin like soft velvet suede.”- Naomi Goodsir and Renaud Coutaudier, in conversation with Michelyn Camen, Çafleurebon Editor in Chief.

To meet both Ms. Goodsir and M. Coutaudier at the Magna Pars Suites in Milan was an incredible honour, and I was humbled by their warmness and humility. For people who have achieved so much to give such a personal journey of their brand identity was a treat. This approach is clear when experiencing perfumes such as Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours. Here is a luxurious perfume, one of high class and powerful in its message but subtle enough to go under cover. It exudes beauty and style, is balanced to absolute perfection and there is much to be intrigued with. Whilst the liquid is a thick amber colour, I personally imagine dense noir curtains and feel it works fantastically when paired with a formal outfit of black-tie attire. The sensation is that of an extrait to my nose. It sits close enough to the skin whilst pulsing out for many hours.

The suede is front and centre but is wrapped in labdanum, immortelle, and incense. Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours still feels avant-garde whilst rooted in classical perfumery. There are notes, which are tried and true but also curious whiffs of the unexpected and never before experienced in my case. Although Cuir Velours translates from its original French to English as ‘velvet leather’ it is extraordinarily complex, and its effect is mesmeric on the skin. Indeed, it forms a scent bubble which encases one in what I can only explain as a succulent, rich tapestry of notes which intermingle and dance with our individual DNA. The rum and tobacco are there, and there is a cherry laced with a charred bourbon thrill to me. However, I then detect a dark ink sensation, which is completely unexpected and adds an underlying darkness to Cuir Velours that I absolutely love! It provides an almost melancholic backbone to the fragrance and also keeps it from leaning into gourmand territory.

Rather than a top, mid, and base structure. I sense other distinctive aspects coming in and out; a raw honeyed note and the chocolatey aspects of immortelle throughout the wearing whilst the central theme of suede is apparent. Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours brings to mind a Caravaggio painting; for its intense realism, chiaroscuro  and deep expression. It is a darkly emotional perfume with dramatic effect. I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic.

Notes: Suede, Tobacco, Rum, Cistus Labdanum, Incense, Immortelle.

This sounds incredible. Julian is one of my absolute favorite perfumers. I like how the review compared the perfume to a Caravaggio painting. I’d love to win this. I’ve never smelled any by this brand. I live in Indiana.

  • This is quite a nice fragrance! I think that it has potential of becoming a signature scent for everybody looking for one. Thank you!

  • Leather fragrances can be challenging. Reading Karl’s review, I can now understand why Julian’s cuir velours is different. “ Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours brings to mind a Caravaggio painting; for its intense realism, chiaroscuro and deep expression. It is a darkly emotional perfume with dramatic effect. I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic.” this mix of classic with new aspects makes this a beauty. Leather/rum/tobacco/chocolaty aspects.. also what I liked was the fact that Goodsir hired Julian before he was famous; which shows their ability to spit good talents.

I never tried any if their frags. But I would be interested to try cuir velours. USA

  • The fabulous details and really intriguing and information appeal to me. The review was very enjoyable. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I never tried any Naomi Goodsir fragrances so I can’t say which is my favorite but Cuir Velours sounds fabulous.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

The perfume mixes a considerable amount of fine tanned leather with some top quality tobacco and rum. The labdanum and the sprinkling of incense just give it an air of mystery.

  • I got curious after reading about Karl’s perception about the dark ink sensation. I used ink a lot in primary school, and I’m very familiar with the smell, so I’d definitely like to try this perfume. I have blind bought Naomi’s Nuit de Bakelite, which I love. Hi from the EU!

  • I have read so much about Naomi Goodsir on Cafleurebon especially the past two years so it was great to read Karl review of Cuir Velout. Finding Julien Rasquinet so young shows they really have a vision. I am fascinated by the comparison to a Caravaggio painting.
Rum and immortelle and leather seal it usa
    My favorite is Iris Cendre

  • Congratulations to Naomi Goodsir and the ten years of the legend Cuir Velour. I think that this is an iconic fragrance when someone thinks of a leathery fragrance and knowing that this perfume has aged so well is just amazing. I think that the suede, rum and tobbaco makes this fragrance something just out of this world.
I hope I win this one. My favorite Naomi Goodsir fragrance is Bois Dascese.

  • John Michael Jones says:

I’ve had my eye on this house for far too long. Bois d’Ascese had my upmost attention until reading Karl’s review on Cuir Velours. Now I’ve got to try this one asap! What appealed to me was how appreciative Karl was by Naomi’s humility and warmth. Says a lot about her character & I love that! I live in Boston, Massachusetts.

  • I have loved every Naomi Goodsir scent I have smelled.
I can’t wait to smellbl this one.
    Oklahoma USA

  • “Darkly emotional perfume with dramatic effect” yes please! I must say Julien Rasquinet is not only an incredible talent but also has the best head of hair in all of perfumery! This is the only Naomi Goodsir I’ve had the pleasure of trying and it has sparked my interest and I want to try them all. I’m in NYC.

  • i love the mention of the ‘ink effect’ followed by comparing it to a Caravaggio painting. very intriguing. i have a small sample of this that is almost empty. this perfume really wowed me and i would love a bottle of cuir velours. to my knowledge i have only tried 2 naomi goodsirs (but there are more i am wanting to try for sure.) of those two, cuir velours is my favorite. i am in the USA.

  • The velvet touch, chiaroscuro, deep expression and realism of Julien Rasquinet’s work draws me to Cuir Velours. Thanks from EU!

  • Cherry laced charred bourbon? Wow, I wish my nose were so fine tuned. I just remembered I smelled it and liked it, but purchased Nuit De Bakelite. Naomi’s offerings are always top notch…..must be because they take their time to get them perfect. I always get excited when there is a new release. There isn’t one that I wouldn’t own if my budget would allow. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Julien is one of my all-time favourite perfumers, and I do not have nearly enough to satisfy my craving for his creations. This quote from Karl piqued my interest: “Rather than a top, mid, and base structure. I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic.” How can one not get enchanted by these words? Fantastic review, Karl. I would love to win a bottle of this, and not only try it for the first time, but the house of Naomi Goodsir as well.

Cheerishly writing to you from Sweden, EU 🙂

  • Cannot believe it has been ten years since Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours’ release. The review says Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours is a fragrance with classic feel but also an avant-garde touch. It also does not follow the traditional perfume pyramid but instead reveals its different facets now and then. My favorite from Naomi Goodsir is Boise d’Ascese. I am in USA.

  • This house seems so interesting. It pains me that I haven’t heard of it before, or tried any of their creations. “However, I then detect a dark ink sensation, which is completely unexpected and adds an underlying darkness to Cuir Velours that I absolutely love! It provides an almost melancholic backbone to the fragrance and also keeps it from leaning into gourmand territory.” Beautifully written, Karl. It would be an understatement to say that I am ecstatic for the chance of trying this fragrance.

    I reside in Sweden/EU.

  • lavienrose13 says:

To me this perfume is more velvet than leather. For some reasons, it reminds me Iris cendré, with which it shares a bit of coldness at the begining. This comparison is striking to my nose, although the notes are different. Later on, the everlastingflower provides a unique feeling which becomes more and more present over the 2-3 first hours. Then the very sweet leather appears. I recognize in the test I ahve made yesterday the description ‘realism, chiaroscuro and deep expression’. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to own such a beauty ! From France.

  • How have I not heard of this house before?! The lack of a classic distinct top, heart and base structure sounds very, very exciting. I’m so excited for the possibility of exploring this myself. Great review by Karl, but that was a given.

    I am from the EU.

  • base structure. I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic.

Notes: Suede, Tobacco, Rum, Cistus Labdanum, Incense, Immortelle. I am intrigued by the notes especially rum and tobacco this is a house that I have got no experience with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

  • with a charred bourbon thrill to me. However, I then detect a dark ink sensation, which is completely unexpected and adds an underlying darkness to Cuir Velours that I absolutely love! It provides an almost melancholic backbone to the fragrance and also keeps it from leaning into gourmand territory. A beautiful description by Karl this has piqued my interest in this fragrance and this is a house that I need to explore further. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • The suede is front and centre but is wrapped in labdanum, immortelle, and incense. Waw, interesting notes and very intriguing. I would like to smell Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Thank you for this yummy review. Your description of dark curtains really appealed to me. My favourite Naomi Goodsir fragrance is Corpus Equus. Writing from the EU.

  • Leather is a tricky note, it has to be balanced so one can enjoy it . The notes and the description for this cuir velours makes it sound incredible. Leather wrapped in incense, immortelle and labdanum? That’s an awesome list of notes. I would love to win this one!
    Wishing everyone happy holidays.. Cheers!

  • This seems to be a fabulous take on suede. I mean… suede with rum, tobacco, immortelle, incense. What’s not to like there? Plus, it’s created by Julien Rasquinet, so I am sure Cuir Velours is one incredible fragrance!
I am in the EU. Thank you!

  • I love Naomi’s creative twists on classical perfume families! I’ve tried Nuit de Bakalite and love it. I clearly need to get my nose on more of her scents. I’m in the USA, thank you.

  • The only Naomi Goodsir fragrance I know is Corpus Equus , gothic fragrance, hairy-chested opening , with all the darkness in it, but also floral . Then it mellows into sensual resinous leather and black tea .
Cuir Velours is a leather fragrance too , but the whole profile is different. There’s a bit of darkness too , but compared to Corpus Equus , the scent is way more inviting, cozy and easy to wear.
Because of the rum , tobacco and the melancholic sensation Karl so well described, I started thinking about Cuba.
Elaborate fragrance i’d like to win
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I fully agree with Karl, Naomi Goodsir’s perfumes are all Avantgarde constructs rooted in classic perfumery, which is why I probably love them so much. I am a maximalista who does not enjoy much the current strip-to-the-bone trend in perfumery, and this is why Naomi Goodsir’s perfumes, these twisted baroque concoctions, are like a private paradise for me. It is no coincidence that Karl compares Cuir Velours to a Caravaggio painting. Yes, any single Goodsir perfume is baroque in a bottle. I own and wear Nuit de Bakelite so often that it almost became my signature fragrance, and I also own and love Bois D’Ascese (it is the perfume I bought as a birthday gift this year). One way or another, I will end up owning the same line. I live in Philadelphia, United States.

  • What intrigues me most about Karl’s reviews is his description of the suede being wrapped in incense, olibanum, and immortelle, which are a few of my favorite notes of all time. With all three present, I would imagine this to be semi-sweet, soft, and a bit cooling (depending how heavy that incense is). That black ink hidden in there sounds interesting as well, would be exciting to see what direction that takes it. As far as a favorite, I have only tried one from the brand – Iris Cendre – which was lovely from what I recall of it. Corpus Equus and Noir de Bakelite have certainly piqued my interest, but I have yet to get my nose on them. Reading from North Carolina, USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thank you so much Karl for this great review!! Just like Caravaggio, your words clearly depict the complexity and the seductive side of this fragrance! I can’t believe I have never smelled it, especially since the perfumery when I often buy from has all the line and I own a bottle of Nuit de Bakélite, which is one of my favourites from my small collection…Based on what Karl says, I am sure I am going to love Cuir Velours also, as if feels seductive, dark, melancholic but addictive, the same feelings I have when I wear Nuit de Bakélite. It embraces you in a wonderful bubble and you wish the wonderful smell would never fade away…addictive!! Greetings from Italy

  • I love everything I have sampled from this house, though I have not had a chance to sample this one. Corpus Equus is on my wishlist. I would have to imagine from the details of the notes and what they invoke based on this review, that this might even be better. Also on a side note, Julien Rasquinet reminds me of a young Donovan. Thank you for the draw! In the US.

  • Very beautiful review! Love this description – honey and chocolatey aspects of immortal with “velvet leather”.
My favourite Goodsir perfume is Bois D’Ascese.
    US

  • Karl did an amazing job conveying the luxurious and emotional nature of Cuir Velours. I love a honeyed immortelle note. I would love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA, and my favorite from the Naomi Goodsir brand so far is Iris Cendre.

  • Thanks for the review Karl!

Leather isn’t a note that I am particularly interested in due to it’s animalic tendencies BUT when it’s Suede it’s a completely different story. This soft ‘creamy’ note seems smell incredibly sophisticated and sexy to me and should be used a lot more often!

What really piqued my interested was your description of the Rum, Tobacco and a Cherry laced with a Charred Bourbon.
As someone who enjoys a glass (or two), this sounds like an absolute stunning fragrances to wear on our date-nights this winter!

I have tried the amazing Nuit De Bakelite, but haven’t bought a full bottle yet. Naomi’s style of perfumery is one that perfectly matches my taste!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • It sounds really amazing, i was captivated from the first words of the review:”velvet skin” made me think immediatley of someone wearing that fragrance and have to others the feel of their skin as velvet material. Also the part of the cherry laced bourbon,my god do i want to try the fragrance now. Favorite from the house, from the ones i have smelled has to be Or du Sérail. I live in Greece, EU

  • Naomi Goodsir fragrances I never had a chance to smell. I very much like suede leather, incense, rum aromas, and especially perfumes with such levels of complexity.
Judging from Karl Topham review, Julien Rasquinet made Cuir Velours is sexy , and enigmatic leather . It seems like the moderately sweet, resinous-boozy base will correspond to a true seductive potion.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Your description of Cuir Velours is perfection! I’ll go and spray some now! Love Naomi Goodsir! At the moment, Corpus Equus is my fav, but this changes often (as everything by the house is wonderful)! I would be delighted to be entered in the giveaway USA ❤️

  • A sueded leather is a classic perfume combination. Leave it to Julien Rasquinet to elevate it with immortelle, tobacco and rum notes. The darkness Karl mentions is intriguing because the majority of the notes are so comforting. His designation of the scent as a future classic is high praise. I do not have a favorite Naomi Goodsir fragrance. MD, USA.

  • Amazing review! I loved the idea that instead of a linear top to base note progression the scent naturally comes in and out of honey, chocolate and other notes. I have never smelled a Naimi Goodsir fragrence, so this would be a welcome first! Thanks again for the review!!

  • I love to learn about new perfumes and houses I’m not familiar with. I think Karl’s review was very detailed and made want try this fragrance so much!!!! All the notes are deep, dark and sounds very sensual!!!! Leather, suede and boozy????!!!! Count me in!!!!
Fingers crossed!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • I really like Karl’s photos of Cuir Velours and his summary that it’s a darkly emotional perfume with dramatic effect. I have tried 3 Naomi Goodsir perfumes a few years ago and remember really liking them, but I don’t remember how they smell. Would be nice to revisit Cuir Velours after reading this review.
    I’m in the EU.

  • Cuir Velours is the best from the line of Naomi Goodsir although you can’t go wrong with either of them. Cuir Velours feels to me as being under a warm, cozy blanket. A really nice feeling!
Thanks for the article and giveaway. EU reader here.

  • I really liked this part ‘Cuir Velours brings to mind a Caravaggio painting; for its intense realism, chiaroscuro and deep expression. It is a darkly emotional perfume with dramatic effect. I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic.’ For sure something that put one’s curiosity on fire. Many thanks!

  • This review encouraged me to purchase a sample set of Naomi Goodsir fragrances. So excited to try all of them. Very intrigued by the description of the scent’s melancholic backbone! I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Karl’s review did a wonderful job of convenying mood whilst also being super informative and easy to comprehend. I have a sample of Cuir Velours that I’m going to go do a little spritz and re read the review. My favorite Naomi Goodsir, one of my favorite perfumes in general, Nuit de Bakelite! It’s so amazing. I live in Missouri, USA.

  • Karl’s review sent me looking for Caravaggio’s art. The beautiful play between light and shadow gave me the understanding of this fragrance easily. Thank you for that, Karl. Emotional and dramatic. How could I not want to try Cuir Velours? Naomi Goodsir is a name I’ve heard and read about but I have yet to try anything from the house.

Thank you for the lovely giveaway! In the USA

  • From Karl’s review it seems Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours is a very sophisticated perfume, despite only a few well-known notes being used (Suede, Tobacco, Rum, Cistus Labdanum, Incense, Immortelle).

I like tobacco and incense notes, but am intrigued by Karl’s review as to how they perform in Cuir Velours (like what karl wrote of Cuir Velours – “Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours brings to mind a Caravaggio painting; for its intense realism, chiaroscuro and deep expression. It is a darkly emotional perfume with dramatic effect. I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic”). Never tried this brand, so no favorites, yet, to speak of. Thanks for the draw and review. I am in the USA.

  • Wow, Karl has managed to stir my imagination for the NYE party: a slick black velvet suit and Naomi Goodsir’s Cuir Velours instead of silk shirt!

I live in Portugal/EU and I would truly love to win a bottle of this very dramatic perfume. Never tried any of her fragrances.

  • Karl Topham naming Cuir Velour a future classic is a big statement! I am intrigued by the description of this perfume as a dark emotional experience, a gourmand – non gourmand dichotomy and an avant garde experiment rooted in classical perfumery. Sounds like a very intellectual and complex perfume that I would be thrilled to try.
    From the EU.

  • Naomi Goodsir fragrances I don’t know yet, but Karl Topham convinced me that Cuir Velours is right up my alley.

“I personally imagine dense noir curtains and feel it works fantastically when paired with a formal outfit of black-tie attire”

    Talk to me Karl
Black tie attire is considered to be somewhere in between white tie , and business attire. Easily the most common formal dress code for events like weddings, proms, formal dinners, opera
Black tie events should be treated with a certain amount of formality, consideration, and respect , exactly the way I feel about Cuir Velours. The smoke , rum, tobacco, and inky profile demands such respect.
Thank you Karl, and Naomi Goodsir
    USA

  • Cuir Velours has some interesting notes and I see why it is an easy to like fragrance. Rum, suede, immortelle – definitely something that I would love.
    I am in Europe. Thanks!

  • Interesting description ! I like leathery notes and I think this perfume is must try for all perfume lovers.
Love this perfume and many from Goodsir house, especially Or du Serail and Bois d’Ascèse.
    USA

  • I really appreciate dense, heady fragrances with limited silage, so they sit “close enough to the skin whilst pulsing out for many hours.” I wish more perfumes achieved that performance. Along with that ideal wear style, Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours also sounds wonderful, combining suede, honeyed immortelle, and incense along with warm boozy notes and tobacco. The “dark ink sensation” Karl noticed really caught my attention. Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours sounds like a terrific leather fragrance. Thanks for the review, Karl.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Naomi Goodsir fragrances but Cuir Velours sounds like the ideal place to start. I’d love to try it. Thanks!

  • Cold Winter weather, woods are burning in the fireplace, one rose fell into the fire, and me , my husband, and my daughter are drinking tea, and watching the snow falling down.
Karl Topham brought me back to our family vacation in Wisconsin 2 years ago. We stayed at one rustic Airbnb cabin with leather furniture , and local Wisconsin charred Bourbon was also keeping me company. Coincidence maybe, but the “Sour Mash” charred Bourbon has quite pleasant cherry aftertaste
Or du Serail is my favorite Naomi Goodsir
Cheers with Cabernet Sauvignon , and thank you for the opportunity
    USA

  • Thanks for the review KArl.

This is quite an interesting fragrance. I was imagining things like leather with orris, but to see immortelle, labdanum, rum and keep it within the constraints of classical perfumery is quite the feat.

Of course, nothing less from Julien Rasquinet who I remember was responsible for at least two of the Amouage Attar series.

A master of perfumery in all its forms.

I unfortunately have not smelt this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Thank you for discovering this perfume to me. I love leather scents, and Cuir Velours sounds absolutely heavenly. I’m very intrigued by the notes of bourbon and ink mentioned in the review. It reminded me of how versatile a base of leather can be and how much room there is to play with it. It’s also thanks to the review that I’ve learnt about Naomi Goodsir’s brand, which I haven’t tried yet but I’ll be sure to order some samples soon.
I’m based in London and would like to take part in the giveaway draw.

  • My favorite from Naomi Goodsir is Corpus Equus. As a lover of unisex fragrances, I’m drawn to the velvety leather vibe of Cuir Velours. I’m curious about the “cherry laced with a charred bourbon” as described by Karl. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • wandering_nose says:

Karl’s awe for Cuir Velours is apparent from his review, and that doesn’t come as a surprise. A fragrance rooted in classic perfumery but taking on a modern twist and appearing so impressive is to me the ultimate proof that being aware of the legacy and at the same time brave enough to be unique and innovative is the way to go for modern perfumers. Cuir Velours, being darkly emotional with a dramatic effect, complex and mesmerizing, enclosing the wearer in a bubble of rich tapestry of notes, but also melancholic – truly sounds like one of modern masterpieces that simply cannot go unnoticed and should indeed be celebrated. Getting an opportunity to win this beauty would absolutely be a very ‘fortuitous rencontre’ for me. Thank you from the EU

  • Regis Monkton says:

I would like to try this fragrance. I want to become more familiar with Rasquinet’s works. When Karl called this fragrance “a future classic” I became intrigued to want to try it. I can like suede in fragrances and I’m interested to see how it works with a honeyed and chocolaty aspect. I live in the U.S.A. I still haven’t tried anything yet from Naomi Goodsir, but I’ve been wanting to.

  • I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a Pastry Chef, but I always relate fragrance to some sort of food, I’ll definitely sample Cuir Velours , I like what I just read.
Karl Topham take on the fragrance, in my Pastry Chef mind made me think of making the famous
Drunken Sour Cherry Chocolate Cake , where the cherries are well soaked in a Golden Rum , and the layers are moist from cherry rum syrup.
Eating the Cake , sitting on a suede leather couch, while on some fancy black tie event, the whole thing is how I imagine Cuir Velours would smell like .
I have no experience with Naomi Goodsir fragrances
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I love a dark, theatric scent! Super into the leather, definitely adds to its elusiveness. Cuir velours is my favorite!

    Greetings everyone
What appeals to me about Karl Topham review , is the melancholic backbone of the fragrance, the soft leather, tobacco and rum.
Just like one of my favorite watches , the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Black ref. 79220B , Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours , H. Upmann Petit Coronas cigar , all will also transport you back in time. Well known among cigar connoisseurs, as president John F. Kennedy’s favorite cigar brand.
Once you light up this cigar, the leathery and chocolate notes will fill your mouth. With a nice light colored ash and no burn outs, the second third of the cigar will greet you with coffee and vanilla notes. The same atmosphere is surrounding Cuir Velours
I’m about to order the Naomi Goodsir sample set, €35 and free Metropolitan France delivery is a steal.
    Thank you

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Karl’s review of Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours. French FIFI Expert for Independent Brand in 2018 Naomi Goodsir. Creative Directors Ms. Goodsir and M. Coutaudier recruited the young and talented Julien Rasquinet in 2012. “Cuir Velours (leather) by Julien Rasquinet is a deep and textured perfume, that evocatively encases the skin like soft velvet suede.” This sounds like an amazing fragrance. My favorite fragrance from Naomi Goodsir is Corpus Equus. I am from the USA.

  • Wonderful review Karl! What appeals to me about Karl’s review is his description of the thick amber liquid as dense noir curtains, intense and velvety, perfect with black-tie attire. I definitely have a soft spot for formal fragrances and this one sounds perfect for me.

I live in the US. My favourite Naomi Goodsir fragrance is Corpus Equus, a deep animalic leather.

  • Naomi Goodsir is such a creative person, and perfectionist i had the pleasure of meeting at Esxence, back in 2013 … time flies so fast.

“I would go as far as to hail it as a future classic”

It’s already a classic imo ,I remember the first presentation with the long shiny cap from ~10 years ago .

If I have to rate my favorite Naomi Goodsir fragrances
    1. Cuir Velours
    2. Or du Serail
    3. Bois d’Ascese

“paired with a formal outfit of black-tie attire”

To me Cuir Velours is more of a going out, romantic or date kind of scenarios, ot too daring for a formal occasions.
I’m a teetotaller and I had to Google what “charred bourbon” is , but I see the comparison.

“almost melancholic backbone to the fragrance and also keeps it from leaning into gourmand territory”
Not to me , it’s borderline gourmand, and very much alive and cheerful.
