As we approach summer the weather shifts and our moods begin to brighten, and our senses come alive with positive energy. There is a thrilling and tingling feeling as the sun hits us and warms up the cells and substance of our bodies. We seem to glide through the day more freely and inhabit a blooming sense of awakening as the warmth permeates through. The sun is revered and worshipped, and this extends far back in history in religion and mythology. People idolised the vibrancy of its majestic power. The sun goddess ‘Sol’ has been viewed in Norse Mythology as a ‘shining god’ and a ‘bright bride of heaven.’  Sol being the deity who steers the sun in a chariot drawn by celestial fire-horses. It is a wondrous image conveying the intensity of the sun’s blazing strength.

This solar feeling is conjured up exquisitely in Musicology Sun Goddess. This is a fragrance which captures the essence of the radiance and warmth we associate with the sun. I was immediately drawn to it reading the combination of notes and wondered how they would interplay when wearing it. As with the entire Musicology collection, founder Fabien Boukobza collaborated with Nathalie Lorson (Master Perfumer) to create it. There is a liveliness to Sun Goddess, which provides instant fulfilment. You cannot help but feel good when spritzing it. Whilst there is a powerful energy emanating, we also experience a sultry tonality and luscious vibe coursing throughout.

Sol is the Norse Goddess of the sun

Sol via wiki

The epithet of Sol as a ‘bright bride of heaven’ is an image burned into my consciousness when wearing Musicology Sun Goddess. The radiance of the scent is captured with a fresh orange blossom absolute and frangipani flower. This brings across a contrast because it is both a pure but also fertile and bewitching blend. There is a mutual sweetness when these combine effortlessly with heliotrope which makes one’s mouth water as this elixir seems to warm into a balmy marzipan experience. Heliotrope is such an interesting note to use in Sun Goddess as it has a changeable nuance, one minute you sense almond, the next a vanillic accent, it swirls and manipulates the accompanying notes to beam a myriad of aspects into the mind. I imagine Sol racing across the sky at speed steering her orb like chariot as these notes dance and soar.

Whilst not listed, I notice the hedione molecule as this perfume is incredibly tenacious and vibrant. It is isolated from jasmine which is indeed included in the list of ingredients. Jasmine Sambac announces itself in a musky way to my nose. It is really used here to create a soft-warm and comforting roundness to Musicology Sun Goddess bringing with it a seductive power and hot breath to the perfume. This creates a movement and tempo to the scent and sublimates the freshness of the opening, which keeps on pulsing well into the wearing. Again, I am transported to a dreamy state, this solar floral composition has a luminous natural lightness that makes one light on the feet and quite heady.  The trail of Sun Goddess is very captivating, and we become aware of the milky carnal facets of the scent as it transitions. It has the effect of lying on a sunbed with beams of light soothing and heating the body. Infused with base of sandalwood and vanilla, the sweetness is enhanced and coupled with the heliotrope brings a creaminess, which is silky smooth and to die for. Surprisingly, the opening of orange blossom and frangipani hold fast, and I can still notice this aspect hours into wearing Sun Goddess. It is a powerful yet soft experience. The kind of scent one keeps going back to smelling for the sheer pleasure of it.

Traditionally scents such as Sun Goddess have fallen into the ‘feminine’ category. However, it is fantastic for either gender. Where it shines is during the day or evening and is the perfect scent for taking lunch or relaxing with friends. Whilst it is a floral composition the heliotrope and sandalwood add enough depth to keep it from being linear and I find it to have plenty of complexity. It is a wonderful warm, airy, and sensual experience. I can just imagine Sol wearing it on her eternal race blazing across the sky.

Notes: Frangipani Flower, Orange Blossom Absolute, Jasmine Sambac, Heliotrope, Sandalwood, Vanilla Infusion.

  • I love anything creamy or milky so this sounds great. sun goddess Amaterasu, a major deity in the Shinto religion of Japan. Her brother, Tsukuyomi, is the god of the moon. It is from the sun goddess that the Japanese imperial family is believed to be descended. Thanks for the giveaway. Georgia USA

I’ll forward this review! I love these flowers! The goddess that immediately pops to mind is Aphrodite (luminous, warm, loving). I also think of Hestia, keeping the hearth & home ever warm. ❤️ Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! I would love to be a lucky winner! USA

  • A fragrance that mixes heliotrope, sandalwood and floral notes must be amazing! I love that this is a feminine fragrance but can be either used by any gender. I link this fragrance to Ra, the Egyptian god that is the major creator of everything.

  • I love Sambac Jasmine and even have a bush whose blooms are so intense that only a small handful of blossoms will fill an entire room!
Which sun goddess would I pick? What Surya of course! I am in the US

  • I love the changing nuances of this fragrance! Especially excited about the jasmine with frangipani and heliotrope notes. Great inspiration from Sol. I would link Athena with the fragrance. I’m from CA, USA.

I am a man, but I always liked heliotrope, jasmine and orange blossom. There are some interesting fragrances centered around orange blossom that are marketed for men, but indeed such fragrances tend to fall in the feminine side. It does not matter to me and I think I would enjoy Sun Goddess as much as I do enjoy the other flowery scents that I regularly wear.
    Thank you! EU

  • What seems stricking about this fragrance is its tempo, its evolution, particulary with its heliotrope. I also love creamy and airy fragrance, and Nathalie Lorson’s are some of the best in this category. From EU – France.

This sounds like heaven! I love white florals and the magical qualities of heliotrope. The smoothness of sandalwood and vanilla evoke warm summer air. From the US.

  • Jasub Ojeda says:

Saying Sun Goddess immediatesly makes me think of Japan… the land of the rising sun, who’s Goddess is Amaterasu.

I don’t know if that vision is what the perfume depicts, but from the notes it looks or feels like it would be like a flowery, orange creamsicle. Like something my mom would be eager to win.

    I live in Arizona, USA.

Orange blossom, frangipani ans heliotrope- can’t wait to try this! This sounds like the feeling you get when you are cold and the step into sunlight and your whole body dances with the warmth. All hail the sun goddess. NY state USA thank you for the drawing!

Musicology I’m not familiar with, not yet at least , but Karl Topham take on Musicology Sun Goddess made me think of my days living in Paris, working under Pierre Hermé.
Once or twice a month, we were taking a day trip outside of Paris to nearby destinations such as
Monet’s gardens at Giverny , or the medieval town of Provins, and stage a picnic there.
Laying on a picnic blanket on a warm sunny day at Monet’s gardens at Giverny, and eating Almonds Marzipan Cake, with orange blossom water, and slightly candied orange slices on top is what I’m thinking right now.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I love orange blossom and frangipani and those combined with heliotrope to convey a marzipan-like effect sounds like the stuff of dreams! I love that Sun Goddess stays unisex despite the solarity (excuse the pun) and sweetness and also that it’s perfect for the coming season and for casual situations.
I would associate it with either Demeter, the Greek goddess of crops, and Eos, the goddess of the early morning.

I have a sample of this fragrance and it is number 1 on my wish list for summer! It represents everything I love in a summer scent: tropical flowers, tinge of sand/sunscreen, and a gorgeous warm woody dry down. I am drawn to associate the scent with the Roman goddess of summer Aestas. Just like her the perfume reminds us of the abundance and glory of summer ☀️ I live in Belgium!

  • Nice review Karl! You are so right about the benefits of the sun and the awakening that produces in our body and mind. The emotional Well-Being
as a result of the serotonin our cells produce with the sun so we have more energy and help keep us calm, positive, and focused. The same liveliness you feel when spritzing Sun Goddess. Sun is translated in spanish as Sol, like the norse mithology you talked about. I love the work of Nathalie Lorson and she did again in this scent:the radiance using fresh orange blossom absolute and frangipani flower , and with the help of Heliotrope appear more nuances( creaminess and silky). You recognize the uncredited use of Hedione , the transparent and clean version of jasmine after removed the indoles, to create a soft-warm and comforting roundness with the help of sandalwood and vanilla. Overall a warm, airy, and sensual experience: summer in a scent. The closer we have in Madrid should be the Goddess Cibeles. I live in Spain, EU.

  • I am so ready to channel some Sol energy, and this fragrance sounds like just the thing. I love the idea of wearing this fragrance as a way to welcome back sunnier days. And a fragrance with lasting orange blossom and frangipani is definitely interesting to me! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • RiccardoC says:

Very interesting fragrance, as I love Frangipani and Orange Blossom! Never tried a fragrance from this brand, would love to…the review made the perfume even more fascinating!

  • Being a Norse goddess, I can understand how Sol could be interpreted as airy and sensual. Because of their extreme lack of daylight in the winter, the comfort and relief brought by the return of the sun must be even more pronounced than for those of us nearer the equator. I think I would keep Sol as the goddess to associate with the perfume. I am in the US.

  • Wonderful review. Based on the picture of all the citrus, I was expecting something “sharper” than what the rest of the notes suggest, which is something warm, sweet, and cozy (at least to me). The sun goddess that I would link is the Egyptian goddess Hathor. The more famous sun deity in ancient Egyptian mythology is Ra, a male, but before Ra came along, the ancient Egyptians worshipped Hathor! She was said represent the ideal of femininity, and was associated with music, dance, love, and creativity. Cheers from NC, USA.

I’ve read a lot about this perfume and it’s on my wishlist. Sounds like a perfect summer scent. And I love the description “There is a liveliness to Sun Goddess, which provides instant fulfilment. You cannot help but feel good when spritzing it.” I imagine Isis to be a symbol of Sun Goddess.
    Hugs from Europe.

Thanks for another great review. I really appreciate the connection to heliotrope, jasmine and orange blossom. I enjoy these arrangements. I will admit that I sometimes wear my wife’s Dolce and Gabana, “Light Blue”! One of my favorite orange fragrances and has an exceedingly unisex quality to me. The sun goddess that comes to my mind is the mighty Aphrodite. Both beautiful and powerful, much like what I’ve read of “Sun Goddess.”

    Appreciatively,

  • The scent description makes me think of the Egyptian goddess Isis, from a childhood tv show. Interesting that this is unisex, but it sounds right up my wife’s alley. NV, USA.

  • GennyLeigh says:

The orange blossom, jasmine and frangipane shout summer and feminine to me. I completely get the Sun Goddess reference. It seems like the heliotrope and sandalwood add some nuance and mellow the floral explosion. It sounds like a fun, uplifting warm weather fragrance. Definitely reminded of the Norse goddess Sol. MD, USA.

  • Sun Goddess sounds really nice. Haven’t tried anything from this House. Cool info too. Thanks

  • Karl’s review of Sun Goddess described the perfume in a lot of detail. I like the fact that it is bright and cheerful as a sunny day could be. I also like that it’s not linear and is perfect for summer days. It reminds me of L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme and there is some similarity in notes, though the latter has many more notes. Enjoyed the pictures and description of Sun Goddess perfume with characteristics of the mythological Sun Goddess. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Eric Hwang says:

This scent reminds of the summer days that are upon us .. hailing from Chandler ,Arizona the sun goddess reminds me most of Athena whose wings were clipped by the sun..

What a powerful perfume! My mind flew to Aphrodite, goddess of love, sex, beauty, and fertility. Full of feminine energy and flower solar spirit, I would absolutely love to try Musicology Sun Goddess.

  • I have wanted to try Musicology fragrances for a long time now and have been especially intrigued by Close To Midnight and Sun Goddess. Sun Goddess sounds very beautiful with its notes of orange blossom, frangipani, jasmine, vanilla, and heliotrope. I am particularly intrigued by the mention of it veering into marzipan territory from the heliotrope. It sounds like the perfect warm and solar fragrance for summertime. Karl’s review really paints quite the picture of Sun Goddess and it sounds like the perfect fragrance for Sol. I can also see Sun Goddess being the perfect fit for Bastet, as she was a cat goddess in addition to a goddess of the sun. Thank you, Karl, for the review, and thank you to Musicology for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • foreverscents says:

Karl’s review made me think about the healing power of the sun. When I feel sickness coming on, I wrap up and then sit for as long as I can in the direct sun. I almost aways feel better. All of the notes in Sun Goddess are ones that I love. I know this fragrance will please many. I can’t think of a goddess, but I think of nymphs frolicking in the sun.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love white flowers so I am always curious about a new reinterpretation of these beautiful gifts of nature, more so if Nathalie Lorson who is the creator.
I would like to start my journey into discovering this house with this new fragrance – Sun Goddess.
    Thank you! Europe

  • I’m a huge fan of the summer-y scent genre; I find it hard not to reach for my EL Bronze Goddess when the temperatures get high. I was born in the middle of the summer in a place where summers are short, hot and sweet, so the season makes me feel most comfortable and at home. Vanillic orange blossom frags seem to do very well on me. I have to join the others on connecting the scent with Aphrodite. Love the art used here! USA

  • I adore the way that heliotrope brings a creaminess to the fragrance and shifts with wear. I would associate the goddess Hathor with this fragrance. Hathor is the goddess of love, dance, joy and fertility. Summer brings the same vitality and joy and I believe sun goddess reflects that. Based in the UK.

  • Thanks for another wonderful article Karl!

With the summer around the corner, my own Sun Goddess will be lying on her stretcher in the garden soon. I would love to surprise her with a matching bottle of Sun Godess!

You mention this leans feminine, but I am no stranger to wearing feminine fragrances myself. I enjoy warm airy floral scents and the amazing Nathalie Lorson has more than once impressed me with her creations!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Sun Goddess sounds like the kind of perfume specifically created to compliment the summer, the warm weather, those perfect days where you do not worry about anything or anyone.
Please count me in for this one! Thank you very much!!

I would love to smell the combination of frangipani flower with the orange blossom and the vanilla and sandalwood. It picks my interest cause i have nevered smelled frangipani flower in a fragrance. I live in Greece, so the goddess that im suggesting is Electryone.

  • WaltherP99 says:

“The sun goddess ‘Sol’ has been viewed in Norse Mythology as a ‘shining god’ and a ‘bright bride of heaven.’ Sol being the deity who steers the sun in a chariot drawn by celestial fire-horses.”

To Michelyn’s question , and speaking of goddesses , there are quite a few euhemerised versions of the Sól tale , since she’s venerated not just in Norse and Germanic , but also in all Slavic , Baltic , Celtic , Thracian and other pagan mythologies.
In Norse mythology , what Karl pointed out is one of the most popular versions of the Sól tale, she’s steering the Sun , riding a chariot drawn by Arvak and Alsvinn , her horses, and is chased by a wolf called Sköll, the offspring of Fenrir .
Her brother Máni is steering the Moon , chased the the wolf Hati , another offspring of Fenrir, while riding his horse Skinfaxi.
According to the story, when the two wolfs catch up Sól and Máni, they will devour them , and the Ragnarök will start.

“Traditionally scents such as Sun Goddess have fallen into the ‘feminine’ category.”

Well according to Norse, Germanic and a lot of other Mythologies the Sun aka Sól was a feminine presence, that also represents health and life-force, cleansing and a way to connect with the higher soul.
I’m not sure how deep Fabien Boukobza , and Nathalie Lorson went into Sól tale, but I’m looking at my Classics & Ancient History diploma on the wall right now, and I’m pumped , Sun Goddess is a captivating solar fragrance I must try.
I’m familiar with all Musicology fragrances, excluding Sun Goddess, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Close to Midnight
    2. The Rose
    3. ‘Cause I’m Happy

  • After a long winter, followed by a stutter-start spring full of dreary days and frequent rain, I’m in the mood for fragrances that invigorate my day with a blast of cheer. Sun Goddess sounds like just that kind of fragrance! The hedione and Jasmine Sambac combination is particularly intriguing next to sweet orange blossom absolute and frangipani flower; orange notes can be all together too sweet if not balanced carefully, or given depth characteristic to notes like jasmine or patchouli.

I’d love to try this one. I’m in the midwest, USA, and I’d link the bright orange in Sun Goddess to Pomona, goddess of gardens and orchards. An orange grove is also sunkissed and fragrant.

  • What a bedazzling name, Sun Goddess!
I immediately start reminiscing feeling of hot sun on my skin. When a name of a fragrance or a review piques my interest, I check fragrance notes and start imagining how they interplay when wearing the fragrance just as Karl described it. I love when editors and contributors share their personal stories and approaches to the fragrance tasting and wearing.

I was impressed by how Karl depicted the interplay of notes and how their play creates summer vibes. Orange blossom absolute and frangipani flower create the radiance, heliotrope brings sweetness and does not stay still, and Jasmine Sambac embraces all the flowers with its warmth and softness. It seems such a seductive and captivating fragrance!

I would link Athena with perfumes, but I would keep Sol as the goddess to associate with this particular perfume.

Thanks to Karl to have so masterfully depicted the fragrance and thanks to Musicology for their generosity.
    Greetings from Slovenia (EU)!

Santorini is easily one of our favourite places , and Sun Goddess could become my favorite vacation of the beach, with cocktail in my hand kind of scent.
Because of my imaginable Santorini vacation, I think I’d link Sun Goddess to Aphrodite , the warrior goddess associated with love, lust, beauty, pleasure, passion . I think Aphrodite and Sun Goddess are in a perfect unison.

The luminosity and radiance of this scent is quite interesting. I like how the hedione and jasmine notes portray radiance, while the firangipani, orange flower convey luminosity. I love how the intensity of this fragrance is grounded in vanillic and marzipan like notes.

Wonderful review Karl! What strikes you about Musicology Parfums Sun Goddess is the idea of a fragrance not just focused on the typical things we associate with the sun – warmth, molten golden amberiness, and sweetness – but also liveliness and movement, and the pulsing tempo of the sun. I have not smelled a “golden” fragrance with that angle and it sounds incredibly interesting.

I live in the US. If I were to link the perfume to a goddess it would be Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility, sex, war, and of course: gold!
