Musicology 'Cause I'm Happy review

As summer winds down we have the chance to reflect on wild times, sunsets and early morning dreams. I find solace and joy in fragrances that make me feel optimistic and ready to take on whatever comes my way.; Musicology ‘Cause I’m Happy is the perfect perfume to reset and begin anew. Launched in 2020 under the creative direction of Fabien Boukobza and orchestrated by Master Perfumer Nathalie Lorson (Firmenich) this is a sparkling and tender scent which will refresh and comfort in equal measure.

As I look forward to one last sojourn to tropical climates this year, Musicology ‘Cause I’m Happy will be accompanying me. I first experienced it whilst at Esxence in Milan and was so taken by the scent profile that I featured it as Best of Show at Esxence 2022. What set it apart from the masses of perfumes on offer was its citrus / amber identity.  Some fragrances that we typically link with ‘summer’ often come off cold and linear, ‘Cause I’m Happy blends bright citrus notes such as bergamot and grapefruit with softer ambrette and musk which gives a cocooning effect. Sensuality is something that Nathalie Lorson does with incredible skill across all the Musicology Parfums Collection and is the hallmark of the brand in my opinion.  Each fragrance carries such an undertone and the trio here of ambrette, musk and ambergris work in unison to create a deeply alluring and endearing sensation.

The transition of  ‘Cause I’m Happy from bright citrus in the top to its sensual heart takes one by surprise and its blend of cedarwood and vetiver top essence in the base is a sensation. Add in cypress essence and orange blossom we have a delectable scent to enjoy. There is a beachy sun-kissed skin vibe within which pulses through around an hour into the wearing which I absolutely love, and this makes me question whether it contains unlisted notes such as coconut because there is a very tropical yet sophisticated aspect to it. ‘Cause I’m Happy is a  perfume which puts one straight into vacation mode and gives a prelude of experiences to come.  It is both enticing and relaxed. When I discussed the brand with owner Fabien Boukobza he explained that a collection of consistency and quality was what he had strived to produce, and he has achieved this.

Musicology ‘Cause I’m Happy is a perfume which projects well in the air to give an enticing trail but also works so well close up to the skin and has that addictive quality where one wants to draw closer to experience it more.   Many will love it  as a transitional scent but also those in need of a feel-good fragrance. As for me, I look forward to soon jetting out on my adventures and being lucid in those early morning sun-kissed dreams.

Notes: Bergamot, Grapefruit, Cypress Essence, Orange Blossom, Absolute Musk, Ambrette, Cedarwood, Vetiver Top Essence, Ambergris.

I love bright citrus, but also mixed with woody and musky tones as well. This seems like a perfect fragrance to wear as summer leads into fall. I live in Maryland USA.

  • This fragrance seems like it is true to its name. It comes across as a cheerful creation with notes like citrus, cedarwood, and vetiver and is ideal for the upcoming fall season. I am in US.

  • The unique and absolutely stunning notes of Musicology ‘ Cause I’m Happy strike me. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Al-Muataz Al-Shibli says:

The opening notes of the fragrance can justify the name, true citrus notes in the opening can blast you with good feeling. The grapefruit and orange blossom combination sounds ideal to achieve that. And as citrus openings usually don’t last, the musk, cedar and vetiver will give depth in the mid and dry down.

  • Well this sounds lovely! I love grapefruit, and don’t have a grapefruit perfume in my collection, so I’d love to try this. The listed notes sound so thoughtfully put together.
Thanks for the review and the giveaway!

  • Karl review immediately transported me to Lefkada, Greece .
It’s next to impossible to find a spot on the Island , that doesn’t have spectacular views of the crystal clear Ionian See , but Egremnoi beach on the west coast is particularly stunning. The beach requires a steep hike down some ersatz stairs, which heavily thins the crowds, but once you’ve made the descent, the beautiful white sand stands in stark contrast to the turquoise water , making it ideal for spending the day relaxing in the sun.
I almost felt I was there, with a few sprays of “Cause I’m Happy” , and White Wine Sangria in my hand , cozy and happy fragrance.
Musicology i’m aware of because of friend of mine , she wears Close to Midnight . I only know how it smells on her , never tried it myself
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • What intrigues me the most about Cause I’m Happy is the transition that Karl mentions with it being such a wonderful citrus opening that moves to that musk and ambrette. That’s how I imagine the transition from summer to fall goes and I love the thought of that being bottled in a fragrance.

    I live in Dallas, Tx

  • Love a feel good Fragrance. The name is perfect . The notes are great for end of Summer into Fall. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • The unusual mix of bright citrus and sensual cozy musks sounds like an enjoyable and safe perfume experience I’d like to test. I also seriously lack vacation vibe fragrances so if this has indeed that aura, then I am in!

  • Citrus and amber feel good cocooning vibe of ‘Cause I’m Happy and Natalie Lorson’s touch interests me , thamks for the draw, from EU!

  • I like the concept of a non-linear citrus. I’m drawn to the warmth of Cause I’m Happy; something unique in this type of fragrance. I am unable to travel right now for health reasons but love a perfume that will mentally transport me to the tropics. ~Indiana

  • Cristea Camelia says:

The idea of citric notes combined with “warm” notes really turned me on. This perfume must be very delighting!

  • Musicology is one of the brands that is on my shortlist to try. This one sounds excellent with Bergamont, vetiver, and Orange Blossom. I have a love-hate relationship with ambergris but when it’s pulled off well it can make the difference between a good and great fragrance. Thank you so much for the draw USA

  • I am so intrigued by your description of citrus-amber. I would love to try this! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • What strikes me is ‘Cause I’m Happy being described as both refreshing and comforting. This sounds like the perfect bridge between summer and fall with a radiating and soft citrus. I have tried a couple of citrus fragrances that have real longevity and this sounds like another I would like! In Texas

  • Nom de Guerre says:

I like that in my head the name of the fragrance is sung by Pharrell Williams. Greetings from Riga, Latvia.

  • I like the idea of “a feel-good fragrance.” The citruses and ambergris sound appealing to me. Thanks again for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • Ahhh, this one sounds so beautiful. Citrus and amber I think are a very compatible pairing! I don’t know why but it is giving me Hermes Eau de Merveilles vibes (which I love!) but I’m imaginging with a sparkling citrus twist. It definitely sounds like a happy fragrance to me!

I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Would really love to try this beauty…love citrus so much!
It would be my first from musicology!

  • I love vacation vibes and grapefruit is a favorite citrus of mine. Then add in orange blossom and vetiver and I will probably be hooked. In maryland.

  • Karl’s review made me curious not only about ‘Cause I’m happy, but about all the Musicology fragrances – what could be more enticing than sensuality in a bottle?
Apart from that, any citruses that don’t take you to the lemonade stand are more than worthy to try.

A lovely and lively review by Karl! I adore tasty citrus notes in fragrances, and when they are backed by some fluffy and/ or resinous sweetness I am sold. That seems to be the case with ‘Cause I’m Happy, so I am really intrigued. I love a fragrance that is both enticing and relaxed. The ability of the brand in terms of delivering a collection of consistency and quality deserves to be applauded. I would love to be able to enjoy ‘Case I’m Happy on my long overdue sunny holidays later this year. Many thanks from the EU

  • AdventurousFox says:

I’ve sampled “Cause I’m happy” and “Close to midnight” already and both of them striked me as well rounded, original and masterfully blended scents. Musicology house caught my eye and I would love to win this bottle, since this is a perfume I didn’t sample so far. Greetings from Croatia, EU!

  • Musicology ‘Cause I’m Happy is different from other mainstream perfumes due to its citrus/amber identity, per Karl in this review. It seems to a lovely perfume from its notes and the way they are blended, according to Karl’s review. Thanks for the draw and review. From USA.

  • Sunny, sparkling citrus fragrances which have an enveloping, cocooning effect as Karl named it, are in my opinion some of the easiest to wear, while being absolutely special. Inoffensive, beautiful and bright, yet not simple and easily replicated. “Cause I’m happy” sounds like it has achieved exactly that. I live in the EU.

  • Pharrell’s (Because I’m) Happy was my jam a few summers ago and I assume Musicology’s Cause I’m Happy is an homage to that joyous earworm. The citrus forward fragrance is what I would expect for a happy fragrance. The wood and musk base seem like a perfect foil. This is a great way to hold onto the warmth of summer in the cooler fall months. MD, USA.

  • I loved the description of this fragrance, starting from the name. This totally gives me summer vibes, but with the uniqueness that ambary fragrances have. I would totally adore having this in my collection. Nice job Karl!

  • This scent has my wife written all over, I quickly join this draw ’cause this will make her happy! Nathalie has the gift of making very wearable scents that have a lot of character. I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • katyakotovskaya says:

Citrus and bergamot is a classic duo, and it looks like Natalie gave it such a beautiful new twist! I’d love to try it. EU

  • I like that this fragrance has an addictive quality and that it can be a soft scent for close-up, but that it also leaves a nice scent trail behind you.
I am in the EU. Thanks!!!

  • I’m dying to try this brand but it seems very difficult to find here in Milan. All the creation sounds incredible and well made, this one in particular speaks to me because I love bergamonte and citrusy notes as well as musk and ambrette!
    Greetings from Italy, Milan !

  • Nice review Karl! I confess I love Nathalie Lorson work, since I discovered her vetivery Encre Noir. She has a long list of master pieces. I agree with Karl about loving fragrances that make us feel optimistic and daring with the future ahead.Of course the name of the scent says it all “Cause I’m Happy”. Ms. Lorson mix bright and sparkling bergamot and grapefruit with ambrette, ambergris and musk (that seems to be in all the collection of Musicology) with the vetiver she masters so well in the transition. It is still a hot summer in Spain, so it will be a perfect addition to my cabinet! I live in Spain, EU.

  • Ambrette and Grapefruit sounds like a unique mix- I’m always looking for scents that are doing the Grapefruit note in unorthodox and interesting ways and this seems to fit the bill! I also recently purchased ‘ New York’ from this house and am enamored, this would be a great way to expand my collection of PdN. I live in Pittsburgh, PA USA

  • I like this due to the review of having citrus mixed with amberette, and ambergris. I don’t think I have smelled that combination before. Thanks for the draw!! US.

  • This fragrance sounds interesting, and I cannot wait to get my nose on it. Also, the bottle looks clean yet fun. Thus, making it more intriguing.

  • Thanks for the review Karl!

‘Cause I’m Happy sounds like it’s my personal fragrances by the name alone. I am always a happy and upbeat person. I see the good in everything and often try to help people see the positive in certain situations. It never rains forever!

The way you describe the ‘Cause I’m Happy simply puts me in a better mood. Coconut is a scent that makes everyone happy. It reminds me of summer, good times and friends.

I would love to try this and boost my mood to stratospheric levels!

    Happy greetings from the UK!

  • I recently sampled an amber that works particularly well in warm summer weather, and I thought of it when reading about ‘Cause I’m Happy. However, this perfume’s combination of citrus with ambrette, musk and ambergris sounds really unique, and different from anything I’ve had a chance to try. I’m also intrigued by the tropical feel Karl picked up. Thanks for the review, Karl.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I have not tried the fragrances from this house, but from what I see online, they have some solid offerings in their range. Plus, Nathalie Lorson is very talented and I am sure she creates unique scents.
    Thank you! Europe

  • This sounds so uplifting and refreshing. I like that you described it as a “feel good” fragrance. A lot of my fragrances are worn for that very reason. I tend to wear fragrances as “medicine” – to help elevate my mood. If I’m feeling under the weather or tired, I choose something that will perk up my spirits. Cause I’m Happy sounds like it would be perfect for days I need that pick me up!

  • Karl Topham take on Musicology “Cause I’m Happy” made me think of making my last year Summer vacation in Valencia Spain. Of course as usual I relate all fragrances to some sort of food, this time I imagined making Ruby Grapefruit and Coconut Bundt Cake and sharing it with my girlfriend while sitting on the warm beach. “Cause I’m Happy” is a fragrance suited for Valencia culture, and way of life
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

Perfumer Nathalie Lorson has made some of my favorite fragrances, and I’m always wanting to try fragrances that she’s made which I haven’t tried yet. I’m interested to try this one for multiple reasons, e.g. its citrus/amber identity which I think is interesting. I can like how Lorson uses vetiver, and the other ingredients/notes seem good also. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Hello! What peaked my interest about Musicology’s ” ‘Cause I’m Happy” is how Topham described the scent as “sensual”. Top notes of citrus sound bright and refreshing; ambrette and musk notes sound comforting. Although the note itself is not listed, Karl picked up on a coconut smell as well, which only adds to my curiosity. While reading the review, I felt like I was sitting on a beautiful beach watching the sunset- bright, yet warm and sensual at the same time. Sounds great! Thank you for the review and the chance to win a free bottle in this giveaway!

  • First impressions last , that’s why I’m always dressed sharp, smelling good.
Musicology Sun is modern woody aromatic ,with extrovert, full of optimism aura surrounding it. I’d wear it with a Tailored Sage Green linen suit.

    Greetings everyone
Cause I’m Happy review by Mr Topham is so inspired by the sunny memories he had with the fragrance.
Grapefruit is the most joyous of all the citrus fruits. When I want to have radiant smile on my face, I often wear grapefruit fragrances
What’s more, there’s vetiver, it’s sensual, and long lasting. So smile!

  • Thanks for the review Karl.

Nathalie has been on a run of citrus fragrances of late and this latest one – ‘Cause I’m Happy sounds like a blast. I love the zingy and uplifting citrus notes and the calming meditative woods that play together in harmony to create this unique scent.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Musicology Cause I’m Happy has some warm, captivating, and alluring sensuality.
Like a smile that you want to have on a specific day , beachy sun-kissed skin, kids playing in the pool with their father, and I’m reading a book, or articles on Cafleurebon, and enjoying every minute
    Thanks for the draw

  • Wonderful review Karl! What strikes me about Musicology ‘ Cause I’m Happy is the idea of a citrus / amber fragrance which as Karl says is quite rare. I am very intrigued by the idea of warm citrus fragrance as I adore amber fragrances and find most citrus fragrances cold and…a bit sterile. Cause I’m Happy sounds like the perfect summer/hot weather fragrance for me and I can’t wait to try it. I live in the US.

  • I’m familiar with most Musicology fragrances, unfortunately I don’t know Sun Goddess, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Close to Midnight
    2. The Rose
    3. ‘Cause I’m Happy
‘Cause I’m Happy is like Karl pointed out versatile, and transitional fragrance you could easily wear all year round. It’s fun , happy a portrait of happiness.
The scent profile is formulated to be both simplistic, yet sophisticated. In the base I get something green, and aromatic, like rosemary
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

What interests me about Musicology ‘ Cause I’m Happy where you live is first that master perfumer Nathalie Lorson created it. Next is got best in show at Excense 2022. Lastly is the beautiful combination of citrus and amber accords that really caught my attention. I’m from the USA.

  • First of all Nathalie Lorson is one of my favourites perfumers. Secondly “Sensuality is something that Nathalie Lorson does with incredible skill across all the Musicology Parfums Collection”. Thirdly when it comes to bright citrus, these are enough reasons to make me happy!Love from EU!
