MUGLER Over the Musk (Les Exceptions) Review (Jean-Christophe Herault) +All about Ambrette Draw

via MUGLER

MUGLER is mostly known for their iconic perfume Angel, and the other pillar fragrances and flankers: Alien, WomanityA*men, and Aura. In 2014, they released a series of five fragrances, Les Exceptions, that are quite interesting: Oriental Express, Chyprissime, Fougère Furieuse, Supra Floral, and MUGLER Over the Musk which are all  housed in art deco inspired flacons, are refillable and are packaged in luxe black boxes. As the names may suggest, each fragrance pays tribute to a particular classic genre of perfume: These first five perfumes were created by Olivier Polge (who is now at CHANEL) and Jean-Christophe Herault who created Over The Musk. “Musk used to be one of the rare natural ingredients in perfume making that could not be farmed and was extracted from the musk deer. Reinvented by technology, musk has since lost its animal nature in favor of more mellow, transparent notes. The challenge? Finding the instinct, character, sensuality and depth of animal musk. A dream comes true thanks to botanical ambrette seeds which transform animal musk into plant musk. “Simplicity sometimes reveals many nuances. Over the Musk explores the bright side of sensuality. From fluffy white cashmere to powdery velvet, the story is about irresistible sex appeal”. Jean-Christophe HERAULT

Duhamel Du Monceau, Henri Louis.

Ambrette seeds are multi-faceted .Ambrette seed (and angelica root) are the only botanicals that contain macrocyclic musk, like the musk deer. There are a few vegetal musks, the most valuable being ambrette seed and angelica.  Ambrette comes from a plant that is in the hibiscus family and produces an edible fruit that is much like okra.

  • I think Sebastian may be the fragrance king he really does have and review alot of fragrances. I love his reviews this one sounds awesome he seems to really enjoy it.

  • I enjoyed the descriptive nature of Sabastion's video review. He is one of the best, and his review of this fragranced motivates me to try it. Cheers from the USA!

  • sukhbirgill says:

Sebastian is great as always, I love the notes of ambrette, black pepper with woody notes. Seems like very polite, laid back but very classy for your personal pleasure that what I like to enjoy some time with my fragrances. I'm not familiar with Les Exceptions but love to try this.I'm from The USA.

  • Mary Shean says:

I do like the Mugler brand Sebastian's review on- Over The Musk was done well. Amazing just 3 notes. I agree with him about Musk being personal & sexy not loud. So glad he found a musk he can add to his collection. I definitely need to smell this. Thank you for this opportunity. USA

  • John Martin says:

I wanna win! I wanna win!! I wanna win!!! My wife and I wear nothing but Mugler fragrances: Alien Man, Pure Malt, Pure Tonka, Pure Havane, Angel Man, Alien, Angel… and soon Alien Fusion…

  • twiggy3634 says:

Really interesting to learn about ambrette from Sebastian as I am completely unfamiliar with this note. I've yet to smell Over the Musk, but I did have a sample of Cuir Impertinent from the Les Exceptions line and it was amazing! Heavy anise on top of tobacco and leather. Cheers from the USA.

  • Doni Light says:

This one always seemed to lean a bit feminine for my tastes, but I love the simplicity of the entire collection.  Oriental Express is probably my fav, but trumped by Hot Cologne for daily wear.  Very glad that Sebastian mentioned the understated nature of Over the Musk, since to me, it really is more of an intimate affair.  Don't get the boozy nuances myself, but the smoothness of the overall composition definitely makes for one "woody experience".  lol  Just how woody I suppose is up to the wearer.  Zzzzing!  USA

  • fleurdetilleul says:

The review is great and I think it's especially nice how Sebastian explains what ambrette is, could be very useful for people who don't know much about what this and that note is. Not entering.

  • I like that it seems very unisex, with its peppery vibe. I'm a fan of Mugler, and would love to try this fragrance. Sebastian mentioned a fruity, boozy, woody kind of scent which is right up my alley. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • tuiu silver says:

I always say that Sebastian has a unique way to describe the evolution and the feeling that you get from a fragrance.
What appealed to me the most about his review is that this fragrance is more of a romantic, sexy but still have that gourmand ish approach that I LOVE from Mugler.
It definitely made me curious to try it, and I would be very thankful if I win this draw.
My favorite from this line is Oriental Express, a beautiful, elegant, creamy, woody fragrance.

  • Really cool learning about Ambrette. I have Hot Cologne which I like a lot from Les Exceptions. A soft skin musk sounds great

  • This is my first experience with this house.  Sounds wonderful.  Sebastian always steers us towards unique scents!  Thank you!

  • I have been eyeballing this fragrance for soooo long. So good to hear Sebastians words on it! I'm into anything with this level of sex appeal haha.

Now if I win, I will find a US address to send this to!! I hope that's not too naughty – I am sooo keen on this one!

  • interesting fragrance….glad to ee a more intimate fragrance as opposed to some of the loud fragrances that we all are used to. I have a quite Mugler fragrances, but none from the Les Exceptions collection. Would definitely be interested in trying this fine fragrance. Cheers from NJ.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I’m really enjoying Senastian’s reviews as someone who is new to youtube frag reviews. I’d really love to try this one as it’s one of Les Eaceptions that I’ve yet to smell. It sounds gorgeous. Thanks again for the giveaway and review! I’m in the US.

  • hillorie.swartz1 says:

Great review as always!! I love the way you explain different notes that I’m not overly familiar with. I’m fairly new to musk fragrances, and love Mugler. I’ve tried a handful from this collection and they were all truly unique. I’d love to have a bottle of Over the Musk and I look forward to seeing what you review next!! Thanks

  • Michelle Maddox says:

I love Sebastian’s reviews they are the best! Over the musk has been on my list of must have for a while now! I’m so excited that your doing this giveaway!!! Thanks

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

    Great review spotlight.

I'm a big fan of musk, Sebastian really takes it to the point, and I feel like this is a good tasty musk

Because it has some energizing elements, like the pepper and the woods,, great concept.

  • I'm a big fan of musk, but I wasn't entirely convinced on this one.

It wasn't until Sebastian referred to it as a more intimate fragrance that it piqued my interest. There are times I want to smell extra nice around the house but most my frags project a bit heavily for close quarters. Excited to try this soon.

  • I am not familar with this one and don't have a fave. It was surprising when Sebastian mentioned the three notes. Everything has gotten so complicated. I like going back to the basics. I would love to try this. Vintage Jovan still is the musk bomb, but not "clean and sexy."

  • bigscoundrel says:

The intimate closeness of Over the Musk sounds very intriguing. I have not experienced a great Ambrette based fragrance, and I haven’t tried any of the Les Exceptions collection. This would be a great intro to both. I’m in the USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

Sebastian says it is not over the top but intimate scent and has fruity boozy elements. I have not tried any from Les Exceptions though I do have one from Mugler's rpevious exclusive line that was discontinued. Over the Musk is, indeed, the one that seems to be most popular from this Les Exceptions line. My favorite musk is probably Kiehl's Original Musk and my favorite Mugler is Angel Extrait. I am in US.

  • citizenkage says:

This sounds nice. I love musk based fragrances. I like many Mugler fragrances too but I'm not really familiar with this collection. Would love to try. USA.

  • Based on the review, it sounds like an amazing sophisticated scent. I think I’ll enjoy the musk in this one!

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Cool explanation of ambrette from Sebastian! Also nice that he says it's a more intimate fragrance, as many Muglers tend to be kinda in-your-face, in a good way! I would love to try this one, I love musk. I'm in the USA

  • Xavier Reynolds says:

I loved Sebastian's review of this fragrance of this being a gourmand. I was intrigued with him saying how the fragrance is personal for you to enjoy. From Columbus, OH (USA)

  • i love watching Sebastian's reviews. He is so good at explaining a fragrance without being there to smell it. I got a sample of Over The Musk once and it was exquisite. I'd love to win this bottle!

  • adriana860 says:

Sebastian’s review of this fragrance left me YEARNING to try it! It sounds DELICIOUS in every way. From CT USA

  • Doc2SmellG8 says:

I have only sampled a few Mugler fragrances, but have taken pleasure in the ones I have been exposed to. With this one his one stayting closer I think it would thrill my significant other as she does't like me to wear colognes that shout their presence across the room. In the review I liked how Sebastian explained the complexity of the Ambrette giving possibilities of diverse directions. Also, he mentioned his search for other fragrances which use the interesting ingredient. He is a man with a mission.

  • This is on my list…I am musk crazy too!  I love that you are so descriptive in your review, and share your knowledge.  Now I want to investigate ambrette more.

  • Sebastian is a pro in the frag community. He is usually on point when describing the scent profile. I like that this one goes into sweet territory. I have never tried anything from les exceptions collection. I would love to try this one! Thank you for a giveaway! (Illinois)

  • George Bonilla says:

I like that he explained the notes and how it sits close tl the skin, but enhances your smell. Short and to the point!

  • Sebastian always pulls you in with a very clear and personal delivery.  What has made me want to try this Mugler for my first is that it's an intimate fragrance for you and those that get close.

    Thank you,

  • juanitoganancias says:

Mugler is one of my all time favorite house but I’ve yet to get my nose on this fragrance.  Sounds absolutely gorgeous and exactly the subtle type of scent I’m into.Sebastian is A+ in the YouTube frag game!  Would love to win this one!  I live in Chicago btw

  • jessicacosgrove says:

Again, Sebastian gives a wonderful review that is a breeze to watch. I adore subtle scents and the Mugler fragrances I have tried. This one sounds absolutely lovely and romantic! (USA)

  • Never tried any of the line, however Over the Musk has to be scrumptious.   A high quality clean Musk is hard to beat.  Sebastian laid out yet another highly detailed breakdown of the scent.   I’m imagining ambrette over woody notes and a fruity quality.

  • Didn’t tried yet any fragrance from the Mugler Les Exceptions. Like always a great review from Sebastian, thumbs up. Must be a really good one so i would love to try it, thank you for the chance.

  • Sebastian's review has me longing to try this fragrance – specifically that Ambrette note. I've not had much experience with Mugler fragrances and only sniffed Angel for the lady and didn't really like it. This one sounds like a keeper and I'd like to try it out. I'm in TX USA

  • Great review of Mugler Over The Musk.  Personal fragrances are good to have in your collection.  I also enjoy the note Ambrette that is some of the Dior Homme line as well as YSL L'Homme Intense.  I don't know any of the private blend Mugler lines but do own the Pure Malt and Pure Havane.

  • Love peppery, but then he said it was a gourmand, and close to the skin. I like how this sounds! I don’t have anything like that. I’m very curious.

  • I enjoy musk if its subtle, and sitting close to the skin. I do not own anything from Mugler. I was intrigued by Pure Havane, because I read it was a rougher version of Zerjoff Naxos, which I own and love. The new line sounds interesting though. I also like that the bottles are refillable. Thanks again Sebastian for the review. Well done. – US

  • Marvalicious says:

This fragrance sounds very nice. I like the intimate aspect he mentioned in the video. I also love to wear fragrances for myself to enjoy and this sounds like it is my kind of fragrance I live in Indiana USA. Thank you for this opportunity!

  • Weird coincidence, I was re-watching Sebastian's top 25 musk video from last year and was wondering about Over the Musk, and, well, you posted this video! Thanks! You answered a lot of my questions! I live in the US.

  • I. Love. Musk. I've never tried this one but it sounds fantastic. Sebastian kills it once again with his wonderful reviews and style. USA

  • I am not familiar with any of the perfumes in this line only AMEN. I am starting to appreciate musks and like that Sebastian said this is a personal scent as many of the AMEN fragrances I have tried are very loud. This sounds like a good intimate fragrance which I would enjoy trying. Thanks for the giveaway and good review as always.

  • I really like Mugler Amen. Sebastian reviews are always exceptional. I have not tried or smelled anything from the Les Exceptions line. The few notes sounds very simple but intimate as Sebastian mention. Sensual and a personal scent thats not loud. Thank you for the giveaway. I live in USA. One Love!!!

  • I am so glad that this draw came up ! I have been wanting to try this fragrance for some time and this is the one that stands out from the collection to me ! The fragrance sounds like a clear, clean and musky gourmand. I would love something like that and love Sebastian’s review. I am interested in winning as well, because he said it smells like pure malt. I am not familiar with this line and this fragrance , but hope to be !

  • Thank you, Sebastian for this beautiful and interesting review!
I do not remember now perfume with dominant ambrette, which has many directions, especially, as Sebastian said, in this perfume fruity.
I like musky perfumes and I like Mugler style- so I want to test perfume.
    USA

  • I must to say again and again- I like Sebastian's reviews.

Soft musk, with woody notes and fruty notes of ambrette sounds great. I have tested only Woodidime ftom Mugler Les Exceptions serie- very beautiful: and hope this one too.

    US, DE

  • Oh yes, big fan of this lineup, my favorite being Woodissime.  Sebastian is a great reviewer.  USA

  • Oh I have a soft spot in my heart for Mugler, though I haven't tried anything from this collection before, and the minimal number of notes caught my eye. I've liked fragrances with Ambrette in it and Sebastian always has such enjoyable and informative reviews. I think it really sounds unisex and soft and I enjoyed how he described it as a skin scent. I live on the USA… Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I've not bought any Mugler fragrances, so this would be a first. Sebastian always gives his listeners the straight scool and this one is no exception.  Its why i like his reviews so much.  Thanks so much for the draw.  I"m in the USA

  • I always enjoy Sebastian's reviews. I haven't tried anything from the Mugler Les Exceptions collection. But my favorite Mugler fragrance is Mugler Cologne. Over the Musk sounds like a really pretty scent – very gentle and personal. I like that sometimes in a fragrance where it wears close to the skin and has mild projection.

    I live in the USA.

  • Always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews. You can tell he still has love for the Fragrance World. Over the Musk sounds like a great scent and I’d like to check it out, haven’t tried Les Exceptions Collection and only smelled Pure Malt from Mugler. Thanks for the giveaway. US

  • WaltherP99 says:

I do follow Sebasian for a very long time-since his old channel Man Loves Cologne.
I’ve smelled not all , but most most of the Les Exceptions line , and imo there are 2 far better than the others – bought Woodissime and i also like a lot Wonder Bouquet.Never smelled this one-it was not available atm of my visit at the boutique.

Sensual , truty musk fragrance with some Pure Malt similarities ? Count me in.

    @cafleurebon , @lookfeelsmellgreat and @muglerofficial i allready follow.

     Thank you.

    Virginia

  • saadfragrance says:

Sebastian is without a doubt my favourite reviewer , plus he described this musky concoction with similarities to pure malt and that just screams me , would love to win , have yet to try the les exceptions line but maybe this can be my first haha from the U.S

  • Love to watch Sebastian's reviews.  My favorite is Angel Muse, though it may not be from the Mugler line.  I would love to try Over the Musk!  Thank you for the chance.  USA

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Sebastián s review amazing as usual.

My fav pure malt that is why Id love to try this.

    Miami Florida Thanks

  • This is Norman aka DWN4FUN on YouTube and I am a faithful subscriber and follower of Sebastian's channel.  I have always been a musk lover and have had musk fragrances such as Kiehl's, Houbigant, BodyShop, Flannel, Jovan, etc.  The part of the review that stood out for me was the fact that Mugler Over The Musk fragrance tends to take a tour into the fruity territory, which makes the fragrance delightful and playful in my opinion.  If chosen, I will strut like a Peacock while smelling like a King down here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where I am located.  Thanks for sponsoring the giveaway!!

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews because they are usually short and sweet. I’m quite familiar with Mugler but not this one.

    I live in USA.

  • Sebastian's reviews are always very detailed and make me want to buy most everyone who reviews I have never tried this one but I have many loves from this house. I would be very grateful to get the try this one out thank you for the chance of the giveaway

    I live in the USA

  • We all agree mr. Yara Is such a great salesman – right ? 🙂

Thierry… sorry Mugler is brand I really enjoy.  Value for the money is really good. Own a few bottles,  but this high end line I've never seen before.

Musk and Mure Malt combo intrigues me a lot.  Pure Malt is my second favourite Mugler , after Pure Havane.

Thank you for the great draw

    USA

  • Sebastian and his reviews. Not sure if it's his charisma , or the way he describes fragrances but 9/10 times I feel like I need to order sample of what he's reviewing.

Everybody knows Mugler for their A*Men , Angel and  Cologne lines but Les Exceptions I do not know , but I wish I knew.

I like the fact Over the Musk is close to the skin fragrance with fruity nuances. To me musk colognes should not be overbearing , but cuddling.

Pure Malt is staple in my collection. It is strong one , and I'm wearing it on dates and bars only. Maybe Over the Musk is toned down musk version made for special events.

    Thanks for the generosity.

  • doveskylark says:

Sebastian has not only piqued my interest in this Les Exception prefume , but also about ambrette. How intriguing that ths botanical has a musc quality. I like that this one is a skin scent partners can enjoy.  I really need to viist a Nordstoms to investigate this line. I live in the USA.

  • I appreciated how Sebastian called out the perfumer on Mugler Over the Musk as being Jean-Christophe Herault – stating that he was the same perfumer on Azzaro Chrome Aqua because the later fragrance is not listed yet on Fragrantica. The site also does not list Chrome Aqua's perfumer(s) & I was interested becuase I just received a sample of Chrome Aqua from my local Macy's rep & I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated. Thanks!

  • I do agree with Sebastian about muck fragrances. Most of the time You can’t expect some crazy strong smell. You wear musky colognes for your own pleasure, and for those who you’ll allow to get into your scent bubble. Musky gourmand? Yes please. Wonder Bouquet is my favorite Les Exceptions fragrance. Well it’s the only one I know, but still.. bought it spayed ones from a friend. Unwanted gift . Feels like I won a lottery with this gem. Thanks to all involved in this draw. USA

  • I like how excited Sebastian is when he reviews perfumes. I am familiar with this brand and currently using mystic aromatic. On my skin, it feels like toned down version of Creed Avantus. I have not smell over the musk yet. Thanks for the review, I enjoyed watching it. From Sacramento California.

  • Sebastian's enthusiasm and knowledge always come through in his review videos! I loved the explantion of ambrette seeds and I look forward to trying this fragrance. My favorite line from this was: Simplicity sometimes reveals many nuances. Over the Musk explores the bright side of sensuality. From fluffy white cashmere to powdery velvet, the story is about irresistible sex appeal”. I am a huge fan of Mugler fragrances. Thanks for this generous draw and I live in the US!

  • Sebastian and his his nice reviews…
I’ve always been a fan of Mugler , and i do own 4 from the brand – Woodissime being my favorite –fantastic are highly underrated fragrance , and yes it is part of Exceptions line.Jean-Christophe Herault created both Woodissime , and Over the Musc.
I do like it's crean , sexy and at the same time fruity and long lasting fragrance.
    Tnx for the giveaway.
I’ve been following Sebastian and Cafleurebon for a long time , and now i do follow @muglerofficial too.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Simple notes composition , but you get both woody , boozy and dried fruity intimate fragrance ? Good job by the perfumer i guess . Everyone knows Pure Malt .

My girlfriend loves Wonder Bouquet.Smells like Parisian patisserie with flowers in it.It is delicious,When Sebastian reviewed Sweetie Aoud by Roja Dove , i immediately thought of Wonder Bouquet.

My personal favorite Mugler fragrance is Pure Malt , so Over the Musk excites me.

    Thank you.

    USA

  • I love when Sabastian gets so excited about a scent. I have been wanting to get my nose on this but my Newman Marcus doesn’t carry it. Love Mugler. Love musk. I don’t own anything with a Brette seeds. A fruity musk sounds delicious! I would love to submit for the give away. I am in Clearwater Florida. Thanks Sabastian!

  • I was excited to know it had musk, woody and pepper. These are my favorite notes. looking forward to try it.

    Cheers from New York

  • I love that Sebastian did a well deserve review on his channel not speak about this line and is not fair I even contacted Mugler to sample it but unfortunately they don’t provide samples or discovery kits is an extraordinary fragrance and hot cologne too

  • Primo Songco says:

I have not heard under the radar. After I smelled it from my daughter. It grabbed my attention and wanted to have because of its colling smell.
