Montale Ristretto Intense Café Review + Espresso Shot Draw

Montale Intense Cafe Ristretto review

Francoise Hardy drinking coffee, 1960s apped with roses by Michelyn

How do you take your coffee? Mine is de-caffeinated espresso cappuccino.  Unless it is in a perfume. Editor Sebastian Jara’s favorite Montale fragrance (until last week) was Intense Cafe. But if you are like us and you can’t get too much  caffeine and creme in your fragrance that’s where Montale Intense Cafe Ristretto, the new double shot coffee, cream, rose gourmand comes into play.

Best coffee perfumes

 Coffees via tumblr

In the context of coffee, ristretto refers to a short (restricted) shot of espresso, meaning the barista pulls only the first portion of a full-length espresso shot. The new Montale Ristretto Intense Café, is an Extrait de Parfum and more concentrated. It is perfect for coffee perfume lovers, as it has just enough froth to keep it from being bitter and is exactly  what you want…even if you are like us and want to drink it instead of spritz it.. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Sebastian says the name live up to the expectations as it is an improvement over intense cafe, with less water and more expresso aroma. My fav. from Montale is Lime Aoud. I am in US.

  • isunnychaudhary says:

Montale always come up with amazing fragrances and last one I remember Sebastian said reminded him of 4th July and this one Ristretto Intense Café which reminds him of smooth coffee with scoop of cream and I love my coffee exactly like that.

As I said I like Montale sensual instinct and am in USA.

  • Sebastian is always precise and I haven’t disagreed with any of his opinions yet. Ive never tried any of Montale’s frags but coffee and rose sounds incredible.

  • Glendon Studdard says:

I love how Sebastian explained the difference between this one and Intense Cafe.I have Intense Cafe and love it and definitely interested in this one as well.

  • Vlad Baicu says:

My favorite Montale is Santal wood, I like how Sebastian manages to describe the relation between ristretto espresso and ristretto cologne. I currently don’t have any coffee fragrances. USA

  • I always enjoy sebastians reviews. This time I could tell hes very excited about ristretto intense cafe and I liked how he explained you get a sense of both liquid coffee and the roasted beans. I also love coffee and would love to try this fragrance. I dont have any Montales but this and the other review I saw sebastian do of sensual instinct are two I’d love to try. From USA. Thanks

  • Joseph Pledger says:

I’ve been buying intense cafe everytime I run out and Sebastian turned me onto this one in particular. I want to try this pretty bad. I was looking for a more prominent coffee note!

    USA here!

  • As always Sebastian delivered a perfect review on another masterpiece from montale, cant wait to try this.

  • scentastic27 says:

As always Sebastian delivered a perfect review on another masterpiece from montale, cant wait to try this.

  • I love Montale! One of my favorite houses. Just ordered a decant of Honey Aoud today. Red Aoud is my favorite so far. They have a huge selection to choose from. Thanks for the review! US.

  • Coffee and rose….fantastic combo! Sebastian likes this fragrance better than Intense Cafe. Thanks for the opportunity to see if he’s right, lol. USA

  • Xavier Reynolds says:

Sebastian made this fragrance sound very delicious in his YT review describing RIC as an amped up coffee version of the original Intense Cafe with less rose. I’m dying to get my hands on a sample.

  • I’m actually about to buy Black Aoud from Montale because of Sebastian. This will be on my list for purchase in November

  • Lisa F Collins says:

I love Sebastian’s enthusiasm about coffee scents…made me want to run to my nearest Starbucks. I haven’t tried either of the coffee scents he was talking about but now I need to go find a sample or two.

  • Xavier Reynolds says:

Sebastian made this fragrance sound delicious from his description in his YT video about this being an amped up coffee version of the original Intense Cafe. I’m dying to get my hands on a sample.

  • I appreciated Sebastian’s explanation of how ristretto is made at the beginning of the video. He mentions a nutty, coffee bean note in Ristretto Intense Café that sounds wonderful. My favorite coffee fragrance at the moment is Café Tuberosa by Atelier Cologne. I have not sampled anything from Montale, but I’m interested to see how the coffee and rose notes work in the fragrance.

  • I love love love coffee fragrances! Sebastian is always so enthusiastic when it comes to coffee. I’m hoping that this might become one of my favorites from Montale, but right now my all time favorite is Sensual Instinct!

  • Malka Leybov says:

I love all of Sebastian’s reviews. I liked seeing him compare this to the original and it’s cool to see that this is now his favorite beating intense cafe!! I’d love to win a bottle of this.

  • lunderwood says:

I love coffee perfumes. One of my favorites is Cafe Tubarosa by Atelier Cologne. Sebastian does a great job at contrasting the lactonic characters of Ristretto vs Cafe Intense. I always am eager to try the fragrances he recommends. -Laura

  • I share Sebastian’s love of rich, intense coffee. As well as favoring rich gourmand & oriental fragrances. Ristretto Cafe Intense is a must have for me. Thanks to Sebastian, Europerfumes and CaFleurBon for a chance to score a free bottle, and for your devotion to the craft.

  • Love the espresso reference in this fragrance and wonder how it can top Intense Cafe – my favorite Montale.

  • Sebastian always has such amazing, detailed and thorough reviews on fragrances. This one was no different! Honestly I haven’t tried any coffee fragrances yet or even any Montale but I need to get on that. I’d love to start with this fragrance 🙂

Thank you for your continued work and dedication to your YouTube channel- it’s always an absolute pleasure to watch!

  • If it’s good for Sebastian. I’m sold. Intense Cafe with more coffee is right up my niche alley! Can’t wait unitl a bottle finds its way to Chicago! Thanks…

  • I have Intense Cafe, but this one sound better. I like how Sebastian describe the difference between both.

  • Great review! I love the original Intense Cafe so less milk and more coffee sounds like a winner. Ristretto intense cafe would be my addiction
    Thanks Sebastian and Cafleurebon

  • I’m really interested in this fragrance because I love the smell of vanilla and ☕️. Plus Montale is quickly becoming one of my best niche houses. I’m just getting started in the parfum and Colongne game. I now own about 50 fragrances and about 20 are niche fragrances. Really hope I win!!

  • Steven Rosario says:

I’ve definitely got to try this. This may very well be my first coffee fragrance and it’s going to be probably one of the more, if not the most intense one on the market!

  • I just Love the smell of coffee! sadly I’ve not found a coffee fragrance that works for me, this one sounds Fantastic!
Sebastian has really good taste and this sounds glorious, Ive not tried any Montale fragrances yet but I would love to start with this one.

  • Lester Grant says:

I think a intense version of intense cafe would be great! Amped up coffee and more gourmand.

  • My favorite Montales are Wild Pears and Sweet Peony. As usual, Sebastian is clear and precise. I’ve never tried a coffee perfume before, but this sounds delicious. Thanks for the review and the generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • since i started watching your videos i am buying more and more samples ! and will definitely get a sample of this one as well ! Thanks for your reviews as always

  • Montale fragrances and Sebastian reviews are like perfect combination. Both I love – bold , straight to the point , honest , and you do remember both for a long time.

How do I like my coffee you ask? Strong and dark Michelyn. I have no experience with original Intense Cafe, a crime for coffee and Montale lover like me. I’ll go straight to Ristretto Intense Café.
In my collection there’s 2 Montale’s Mukhalat and Amandes Orientales .Both are sweet , long lasting clubbing fragrances , and that’s exactly what I except from Ristretto. 10 years ago there was a big hit called “Party like Rockstar” . I have a feeling Ristretto Intense Cafe will be the star of the show in the winter .
Thank you Sebastian , Europerfumes and Cafleurebon . What a draw.

  • Carey Frank says:

I love the house of Montale! Like Sebastian, Intense Café is my favorite from the house. I can’t wait to try this new one by Montale.

  • I love excited Sebastián is about this fragrance. The idea of a coffee fragrance has always intrigued me but I haven’t had much luck finding one that encapsulates that freshly brewed coffee smell I love, so I hope I win this! My favorite montale fragrance to date would rather be red vetiver or honey aoud.

  • David Thomas says:

Another great review from Sebastian!! I’ve been watching Sebastian for quite some time and I can tell when he is completely blown away by a fragrance.

  • j.alexander says:

What isn’t there to love about Sebastian’s reviews… Always extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Intense cafe is certainly my favorite fragrance from Montale. The amped up coffee in this one sounds delicious!

    Thank you for this opportunity.

    I’m in the US.

  • I’m glad Sebastian compared Ristretto to the original! The original didn’t sound up my ally because of the rose, and less emphasis on the coffee. This new one sounds like the fragrance I’ve been looking for.

  • finerthing_940 says:

Sebastian is passionate about fragrance and he is very knowledgeable! I learn a lot from watching his videos. I’m intrigued by this Montale fragrance because I looove coffee. Seems like it’s right up my alley. I definitely trust Sebastian’s review on this one.

  • If Sebastian calls certain fragrance “to die for” Ristretto Intense Café should be top gourmand.
Like I discussed with him a few months back on YouTube I’m always careful when American reviewers use “coffee” describing fragrances. Not all , but most Americans think about Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks muca-laca sweetened, caramelized bull… when they think about coffee. Being European when I think about coffee I think about strong espresso, ristretto or grounded coffee from just opened bag. I trust his nose . Rose and milky vanilla are nice additions.
After watching the video, I was instantly reminded of me eating Rose Panna Cotta Tart ( with rose water actually in it) and drinking ristretto. Pastry Chef in the house.
I love potent fragrances, so my appreciation for Montale comes naturally. Own 5 100ml bottles , and Dark Purple is my favorite one. Unfortunately the original Intense Café I do not know.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • I always like his reviews, my window into finding fragrance. I don’t live near shops and have been wanting to try Intense Cafe. Now i’d Like a chance to win this new version! Coffee smells awesome.

  • Rigoberto Portillo says:

I liked the comparison that Sebastian made between the two fragrances, and why he likes this new release more. I think that the added amount of coffee is a nice addition, I haven’t tried the Intense Cafe one, but I haven’t heard nothing but good comments about it. However, I do like coffee fragrances.

  • I always like Sebastian’s reviews. Tells you about the fragrance and descrobes what it smells like really well. I have not tried any fragrances from Montale bur looking forward to maybe trying it one day. USA

  • steven8301 says:

Great review Sebastian, you always do a great job helping us visualize the scent. I too really enjoy intense cafe and just wished for a STRONGER coffee note. I cant wait to try Ristretto intense cafe!!!!

  • I just love how Sebastian is bringing all of these awesome frags to my attention, I wouldn’t know about 50% of my collection without him

  • Carlos R Rodriguez says:

I’m very enthusiastic about this release. I’m a coffee buff and a frustrated barista wanna-be. I live coffee in all forms. So when Intense Cafe came out in 2013 I had to try it and fell in love. It was like smelling a very sugar-sticky latte mixed with a jammy rise and, to my nose, a very mild kiss of oud. I couldn’t be in the lusitano of buying it until last year. But unfortunately when I re-visited it the smell of coffee was not there for me. I thought I had been reformulated. No smell of a coffee latte for me, though it continued to smell great as a rose and amber perfume. So I’m excited and encouraged by the review that Sebastian has put together. Thus time I’m hopeful to be ready to get a bottle.

  • Lara Anderson says:

Very excited to try this one. Like Intense Cafe but found that it wasn’t strong enough on the coffee note for me. Sounds like they really improved on it.

  • I too very much like coffee fragrances. I don’t think I smelled a coffeee/rose combo before. Would like to win this and share in the enthusiasm. My fave of Montale is Boise Vanille. US

  • jraiter322 says:

His description of Ristretto has me very excited to try this. I love the original, but this new version sounds amazing. More coffee please 🙂

  • saul flores says:

Sebastions reviews are always very informative, coffee fragrances are my favorite and currently my favorite is intense cafe

  • Paul Mankarious says:

Sebastian is the only reviewer on youtube that gives you the REAL DEAL breakdown and honest opinion of every scent. Specifically with this review what i enjoyed the most was “Im a coffee snob myself, and this fragrance takes intense cafe to the next level” as another coffee snob this got me so excited that i feel like i need to get that bottle NOW LOL Personally i have never had a coffee like perfume but it sounds glorious!! My favorite Montale scent is Starry Night! I would love to win i’ve never really won anything hahah thanks Sebastian

  • Sebastian always exhibits a true passion for a fragrance when the scent has made an impact on him. I value his depth of evaluation (good or bad) on each fragrance. We shouldn’t be surprised, but Montale Ristretto Intense Cafe sounds like a winner.

  • I’m interested since this has beat out Intense Cafe for Sebastian’s favorite!! Intense Cafe to the next level…..yes please. I do like coffee in perfume. I’ve heard they amped up the coffee in this. I like Intense Cafe, but the coffee doesn’t come through very strong. I wasn’t surprised that a little of this goes a long way, that’s typical of Montale. My favorite Montale is Patchouli Leaves. I mostly have only smelled their vanilla’s and Intense Cafe. I have avoided their Oud’s which they seem to have a lot of. I’d love to win this!! USA.

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always good. I love the original Intense Cafe and I am actually wearing it today. I like the idea of this new version having a more pronounced coffee note since the original the coffee note goes away after a little while. I also like the addition of Amber in the base which I think is different as well. I enjoy coffee and coffee fragrances and Intense Cafe is my favorite from Montale. Thanks for the draw. In the USA.

  • Andrew Lowley says:

I love his expression of each note.. I feel like we have alot in common as far as what we enjoy in fregrances and he teaches me something new about how to identify each note.. a year ago for me, cologne is cologne and I never knew what exactly went into creating that scent I just picked what I liked.. all sebastian’s videos are very helpful in sampling new to me fregrances.. he is a great instructor on the subject.. thank u and good luck to the other entries… I hope I am lucky enough to win a bottle.. I have been curious of a few different montale scents.. this one and hindu kush

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love Sebastian’s reviews. Less milk, more coffee is basically my motto and I think I need the fragrance to go with it. Sebastian’s review of Sensual Instinct had me immediately finding some to sample and I can’t wait to try this one. Thanks for the draw. US.

  • Outstanding review from Sebastian. I agree with more coffee than milk in the fragrance making it more appealing for coffee lovers. Montale Intense Cafe which is my favorite Montale makes me want to get this one for sure. Thanks for the drawing. I live in USA.

  • Love how sebatian says it’s an even more intense coffee note than in intense caffe. Definitely want to get my hands on this one. From USA

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Never tried a coffee/rose combo so looking forward to trying this concoction. Excellent review by Sebastian as always. VA, USA

  • I especially enjoyed the comparison Sebastian drew between Intense Cafe, a more milky rose fragrance, and Ristretto Intense Cafe, a stronger and darker coffee fragrance. As an espresso lover, I would love to try this. I live in the USA.

  • I love Intense Cafe and this one sounds even better! Thanks to Sebastian for sharing another new fragrance. I trust his descriptions and love Cafleurebon’s giveaways!!! Thank you… KY, USA

  • What I like is that it has more of a coffee note than the original. Especially given that it has multiple kinds of coffee notes. The original is lovely, but I don’t get much coffee out of it. It’s more of a vanilla, milky rose to my nose.
I love coffee notes. Like Atelier’s Cafe Tuberosa.
My fav montale is Black Aoud and Red Aoud.
Im in the US. thanks for the draw

  • I loved Sebastian’s exuberance when reviewing this fragrance. When sniffing the older Cafe Intense, I agree that it is somewhat lacking with the coffee aroma and too milky and sweet. Finally I had a chance to sample Ristretto Intense Cafe and there is a world of difference between the two. Ristretto is much darker and aromatic. Sebastian is right when he says this is a potent fragrance. I haven’t tried many Montales, but I do have and love Red Aoud. If I were to win this bottle of Ristretto, I would be so grateful. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • I love coffee perfumes, I was introduced to them by none other but Sebastian after watching his reviews. That’s how much I love and trust all his reviews. I don’t have a favorite Montale fragrance.
    I live in USA.

  • I’d like the chance to try and own a bottle of this. Sounds delicious. This has become Sebastian favourite Montale. Also learned about ristretto. Thanks, US

  • What I enjoyed about Sebastian’s review, was his enthusiasm, along with the knowledge and preparation he has. I am, unfortunately, not familiar with Montale fragrances. The only real coffee fragrance I am familiar with is Intense Cafe (making it, by default, my favorite). I look forward to becoming more familiar with Montale fragrances, as I have with Mancera.

  • hey Sebastian is not fair!! I just received sensual instinct and now ristretto coffee comes out !! You need to make a review video now about divorce lawyers my wife will not be happy when she finds out that I am going to buy another Montale great video keep like that!!

  • I enjoyed Sebastion’s description on the feel of the fragrance and the main accords as usual. I love that he went into detail on the focus of the fragrance, coffee ! I love coffee fragrances and adore Givenchy play intense, but have always wanted something more intense. My favorite Montale is saffron aoud ! So rich, leathery and refined, yet with a growl !

  • I love Sebastian’s reviews – he always explains so well. He explained the difference between this and Intense Cafe very well. I don’t drink coffee! but I do have a couple coffee perfumes and I love them and wear them often.
Thanks for the great review, and thanks for the generous draw. I’m in the US>

  • I am a huge fun of montale, especially intense cafe. That is my fav.
Sebastián s review perfect as usual. Miami Florida Thanks

  • O M G, I so want this perfume!!! I’ve wanted the original but never bought it. But hearing that this one has a stronger coffee note, I definitely need this!!! I do enjoy coffee perfumes, most notably Angel for Men. Sebastian has me totally sold on this one!
    I live in the US.

  • I had the pleasure of smelling Ristretto Intense Cafe last month in EU, and I have to say it’s beautiful. As usual EU gets most niche fragrances earlier.
To me Ristretto is tweaked version of Intense Cafe. You get a lot more coffee, and less rose. The coffee is noticeable in the base too , which is good because does not matter if they like the fragrance , or not , half don’t even get the coffee in Intense Cafe.
I think it’s really good fragrance, and I’ll get it 100% for the late autumn and winter. If you want to wear it right now ONE spray will be your best shot. As i said i love the smell , but Ristretto is a strong one , and If you’re not careful with the sprayer you could easily choke someone out.
Montale is one of my favorite houses – atm i do own 11 100ml bottles. Not sure what’s mt favorite one , but i can tell you i’m wearing a Montale right now – Wild Pears.

Another great one, Sebastian! Love the explanation on coffee/espresso strengths. One of my favorite Fall notes. Thanks for the opportunity.
I’ve sampled and love Intense cafe.
    – USA

  • Sebastian, I am available for coffee! His passion is contagious. This Montale sounds like the perfect potion to put my son and his Brooklyn hipsters in their place. I live in the USA and love Stram Oud.

  • Thanks for another great review, Sebastian! I know you love Intense Cafe and to have a new favorite in the Montale house says a lot. My favorite Montale is Intense Cafe. I am a coffee lover and this Ristretto Intense Cafe sounds more exciting- less milky, more coffee and rose combination. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • doveskylark says:

I only drink one cup of coffee a day, early in the morning. It must be strong and black. I am happy that the coffee note of Ristretto Intense Café has been amped up. The coffee note with Turkish rose sounds very lovely. I hope I like this one as much as Sebastian.
I like Black Oudh from Montale.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’d like to win this- I like how Sebastian admitted to his obsession on his video… I have a few niche perfumes and also designer and I think I would like a stronger coffee perfume. I have Black Opium and a couple flankers if it, but I’ve always wondered where the latte note is that people refer to. Out of the couple Montales I’ve tried, I like Full Incense the best. Thanks 🙂

  • I like my coffee with triple shots espresso, no milk , with added just a small tea spoon of honey.
Every time I think about Montale I think about top performance. Vanilla Cake lasts forever on me , Sensual Instinct is super strong too. Sampled the second one because of Sebastian Cafleurebon review , and it was so impressive I got it next week.
Judging by the flames in Sebastian eyes we have something special here with this roasted coffee and rose combination. The original is pretty good, and I expect something better from Ristretto version.
Thank you for the generosity, the review was enjoyable too , it’s Sebastian after all.

  • Michael Prince says:

Sebastian, with another great review this time of Montale Ristretto Intense Cafe Extrait de Parfum. I heard this is an improvement over the original Intense Cafe with a dimmed down rose note and amplified coffee and gourmand notes. I am really excited to try this one out. I am from the USA.

  • Jessica D Hansley says:

I always love Sebastian reviews. He mentioned this fragrance smells More like coffee than milk. Intense cafe is a wonderful fragrance, yet having a stronger coffee note sounds amazing.

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews; they are very thorough. I like that this fragrance has more coffee notes than milk; it sounds amazing.

  • IvanVelikov says:

To my understanding Ristretto Intense Cafe is upgraded version of Intense Cafe. I see the hype train coming soon. The original Intense Cafe is a fragrance with cult following, for a good reason I believe. It’s my second favorite Montale after Chocolate Greedy , my third favorite being Honey Aoud.
Amped up coffee intrigues me a lot.
I like Turkish coffee the most with cardamom.
    Fingers crossed
    Thank you all

Sebastian always does a great job describing fragrances and this time is no different. I like Intense Cafe so I definitely need to try this new version. I’m in the USA.

  • mariotgomez says:

I’m a coffee snob as well and been looking for a coffee scented fragrance from some time. My Favorite Montale fragrance would be Aoud Cuir d’Arabie. I live in the USA.

  • Bought so much fragrances because of Sebastian – mostly niche. He has a way to convince people they should buy , or at least try fragrances he’s reviewing.
I’ll get Ristretto Intense Cafe sample next time i’m ordering samples.
Grounded coffee is the most intriguing part , rose , vanilla , caramel and milky dry-down Wow
Ristretto Intense Cafe is brand new , but i do own 3 Montale fragrances Chocolate Greedy , Oudmazing and Vanilla Extasy all full bottles. My favorite one is Oudmazing .
I like my coffee dark and black , and i love coffee fragrances .My SOTD is Follow Kerosene.
    Great opportunity – thank you.

  • Hillorie Swartz says:

Sebastian is one of my favorite reviewers! He is so thorough, and I love his enthusiasm. My favorite Montale that I’ve tried so far was probably Honey Aoud, but Intense Cafe was a close second. Ristretto sounds like a huge improvement on the original, I can’t wait to get my nose on it 🙂 USA

  • wildevoodoo says:

I’ve already been wanting to try Intense Café, and as one of Sebastian’s fellows in the coffee snob department, Ristretto Intense Café sounds even more amazing! I’m thrilled that coffee is included in both the top and heart notes, as well as with the extrait concentration- I love being able to spray only a little but get many hours’ wear out of a fragrance! If Intense Café is more of a milky rose latte like Sebastian says, I think I will like Ristretto better anyway. The more coffee, the better, as far as I’m concerned! I would love to wear this on chilly fall and winter nights. My favorite Montale fragrance is Arabians. I am in the US 🙂

  • I’m in love with the expresso aroma, and would really love to try it!! This is totally in my boat, and the scents seem so refreshing. I’m from the USA.

  • I enjoyed how his anticipation over the years of this product needing more coffee and less milk, is now here. Seeing him excited has me excited and I never even smelt it! Good job bro.

  • as a major fan of coffee fragrances – i need this. what a gorgeous fragrance! this one sounds perfect for cold weather. Sebastian always knows how to make the fragrances seem so elegant. USA

  • I am now very interested in the intense cafe with more coffee – ristretto intense cafe. I enjoyed Sebastian’s review – really explained the difference!

  • “Vanillic, rosy coffee!” that was it for me, sold! I’m a fan of the Intense Cafe/Roses Vanille DNA, and as coffee lover I’m sure I would love this one even more. My favorite Montale is Arabians and my favorite perfume with a note of coffee, although not really a coffee fragrance, is Dior Vetiver.

  • Excellent review by Sebastian! I enjoyed his review of Intense Cafe, but this one sounds like it is on a whole other level. The burst of coffee and rose with a little milk have me sold. The Ristretto sounds like one I have to have in my collection for sure, Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Victor Pandolfe says:

I was really looking forward to get intense cafe but this seems the way to go! Super interested in this one. I’m in the US, for the giveaway!

  • Michelle Blair says:

I think Ristretto espresso is the absolute best! I love Montale’s Intense Cafe and would love to try this one. (I’m in WA)

  • I loved the clanking cap stopper the most. my ocd was hyped up on that shot of ristretto lol
This sounds so good I gotta try it.
    Also in the US.
