Montale Oud Tobacco review

Montale Oud Tobacco collage: Photos from Sebastian and Pixaby

Tobacco and Oud are boon companions in perfumery. Perhaps the most well known is Tom Ford’s 2013 Private Blend: Tobacco Oud,  which is a smoky Middle-Eastern tobacco combined with equally smoky Oud. Montale Oud Tobacco is also reminiscent of the Middle East but that is where the similarities end. Instead of a burnt tobacco, the aroma is more like uncured tobacco leaves and  a seldom used ingredient in perfumery-sumac (not poison sumac-the edible kind). Sumac is a spice, from a flowering bush whose berries are crushed and used in Middle-Eastern and Lebanese cuisine. What does it smell like? Sumac has the tang of lemon without the astringency. It is prominent in Montale Oud Tobacco, and while this fragrance shares similar DNA to many Montale Fragrances, it is not what you might expect from the name… and that can be a good thing, as it is here. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Really love the house , have many of they re offerings , would love to get my hands on this one , new york , usa .

  • jcpointius@gmail.com says:

I love Sebastian’s tranquility and confidence. I never heard of sumac before but I’m always eager to try new things, especially if it has lemon scent. I’m from Miami, Florida.

  • What I appreciated most was he said this fragrance was “Not so oud-ie!”. Which to be honest is why I’ve stayed away from heavily oud fragrances. They never smell great on me.

  • I’ve never experienced sumac before but find the description very intriguing. The color seems to pop of tart lemony cranberry possible smell. Also the description of the tobacco notes makes me almost imagine like a tobacco tea kind of smell .

  • I love red sumac as a spice, I add it to my lentil soup, so I am very curious the mix of sumac and tobacco oud came out !!!YAY!

  • I love using sumac in my cooking and have never heard of this ingredient being used in perfumery. Also I was ingrigied by how Sebastian described tobacco notes in his review. Definitely would love to try this fragrance! Thank you for the opportunity to win a bottle.

  • Joel Franco says:

Sebastian all the time the explain the products like no one and I feel this fragance it’s amazing

  • Milton A Hernandez says:

I love montale fragrance especially their sensual instinct and intense cafe. I would love to try these new fragrance from montale Paris.

  • Well, I personally would have never thought Sumac would one day be used as a note in perfumery. I was raised consuming the spice or herb itself on various Salads and dishes .
I totally agree with Sebastian on how the spice tastes as he really gave it a detailed and accurate explanation, but again not sure how it would smell in a fragrance. Thank you all for all u do, and good luck everyone.

  • I always use sumac like salt! It’s really good on roasted chicken with lemons. I thought by the name it would be a beast but it sounds great
    From Bronx

  • I learn a new think from Sebastian that sumac is in frag. Tonka bean plus grape plus sumac. I am in CA

  • Fernando Garcia says:

I have several of Montales frags. Would love to win a sample. I’m a great fan of your channel. And glad to have know this fragrance web site thanks to you. Sabastion.

  • Dragana Sheaffer says:

I really enjoy Sebastian channel, he is good in explaining and describing perfumes. Because of him i got so many great fragrances. Montale is new house for me and I will love to try tobacco oud. I will have to see if I can find in Chicago

  • Sebastian gave a clear and concise explanation if the notes the fragrance. He described how sumac is common in Middle Eastern cuisine. He explained what type of tobacco fragrance this is and said it’s a:fresh tobacco scent that’s not overly powerful. I gave heard of sumac and have occassionally used it in middle eastern cuisine when it’s called cor in a recipe.

  • I wasn’t too excited about this one based off other reviews I’ve seen but I always like Sebastian’s take. I think the sumac addition sounds interesting since it’s citrusy and adds a berry feel in the top! My favorite montale is intense cafe and I live in Pennsylvania!

  • Devon Chamberlain says:

I like that Sebastian described the Sumac smell and talked about it’s uses outside of fragrances. I collected some sumac this year here in NY bit didn’t realize it was a note in fragrances.

  • Thank you Sebastian for your detailed review. I appreciate how you provide a reference point when describing a rarely used note – Sumac. I had not heard of this note before and would love to try it out. I’m in USA

  • Sebastian is articulate, so well spoken and gives a complete descriptive review on every fragrance he does a video about. I really liked how he clarified that Montale Oud Tobacco is not the typical style of ashy smokey tobacco like fragrance but rather a syrupy like tobacco. I think anyone interested in Montale Oud Tobacco should check out Sebastian’s video first before hunting down a sample.

  • Sebastian’s Youtube channel is like Netflix to me. I spend most of my free time watching his reviews.
I heard a lot about Montale Tobacco Oud, it would be a delight n get my hand on a bottle. I own Montale Intense Cafe, the funny thing is, I did not like it at the beginning, but now! I cannot stop wearing it. It is one of the best perfumes I own. I’m very happy that Sebastian reviews it! Honestly, most of the time, when I’m looking a perfume up, I find great info on Sebastian’s Youtube channel
The notes for Montale Tobacco Oud seem to be very interesting to me, as an Arab, note such as Oud, Sumac, and very familiar. The note layering for this perfume seems to be very interesting. I hope I own a bottle! but even if not, I really enjoyed watching the review!

  • Interesting comments about an heretofore unknown spice for me…..sumac. And the comments about the tobacco notes…..Intriguing…

  • I love how Sebastian explains and breaks down top middle and base notes gives a very good example on what to expect to smell. I have heard of sumac but never smelt it here from texas

  • kkarnes1986 says:

I love Sébastien’s channel and his exclamation of fragrances. I liked his focus on the sumac note since that’s a note you don’t see very often in fragrances and a lot of people may not be familiar with it at all. I love sumac though and I’d love to win this bottle! I live in Ohio USA.

  • I would love to try this, I love the unique DNA of montage fragrances and love to try fragrances where interesting and unused notes are utilized. Thank you!

  • Definitely was aware of sumac, but never tasted nor smelled it before. In fact, just like Sebastian, I probably can’t even name a single fragrance that includes it as a note. I can absolutely see a correlate with pink pepper though, with that undercurrant of lemony freshness. Really like the sound of the leafy nature of the tobacco in this one too. Although the grape feel most likely comes from methyl anthranilate in the orange blossom note (ala Jacques Bogart’s Silver Scent line), it’s great to hear that it doesn’t give it a chewing gum vibe. Now THAT would’ve been interesting. Happy that Sebastian was honest about it not being his favourite tobacco frag. Quite a few glowing reviews online so far. Nice to get a more objective take. Mi, USA.

  • I appreciated discovering this fragrance; I’m not sure if I had heard of it before having seen this review. I can appreciate a tobacco scent that is pre-burned tobacco. I want to see what the sumac note is like. I’ve certainly heard of sumac before. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Really interesting to see this note in a fragrance. Usually, I don’t love Montale or Mancera scents, but maybe there are some things I’ll need to give another shot. I’ve been looking for some more ouds to explore.

Thanks for reviewing, excited for the giveaway—I’m in Massachusetts.

  • As a fan of unisex fragrances, Sebastian’s description had me interested. A citrusy, berry, orange blossom oud combination sounds wonderful. I like the idea of a “sweet tart” experience. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Love tobacco fragrances so I’m excited to try this one.
Most enjoyable part of Sebastian’s review was his description of how sumac tastes/smells.

  • userdoesntcare says:

I cook with sumac all the time and also make tonic syrups using sumac but I could never describe the flavor outside of saying it tasted similar to coriander but with a floral aspect. But Sebastians description totally makes sense! “Fruity like lemon but less tart” is about right, though I still think it’s a bit floral. I have to have this fragrance to see how they used the spice! Commenting from Missouri, USA

  • I like sumac as a spice. It’s brings a welcome brightness and astringency to food. I’ve never tried it in a fragrance before but I imagine or would have a similar brightening effect. Sebastian’s description of Montale Tobacco Oud as a citrusy, floral, berry tobacco sounds lovely. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I love that Sebastian talks about his fragrances with such enthusiasm! He is so knowledgeable, and I admire his continued efforts to educate us! I love sumac, and that it has been utilized as a note in fragrance is super intriguing. Looking forward to the chance at winning the bottle!

  • Derek Belden says:

I’ve been interested in the house of Montale for a while since I enjoy many from Mancera. I enjoyed Sebastian’s breakdown of the sumac note and how it plays into the fragrance. While I knew of its character prior, it helps to have a hands on look. Would certainly be interested in the giveaway to try out another Oud fragrance.

  • Michael Bullock says:

Tobacco is one of my favorite notes and thanks for the giveaway and have blessed Ponchatoula La.

  • Kevin Carroll says:

I love Tabasco in a fragrance and the sumac sounds nice also I don’t own a Montale fragrance yet because I’ve made bland buys on so many colognes and be disappointed. But every review I’ve subscribed to seem to say nothing but great things about your
Fragrance Please consider me as a give bottle, thank you in advance.

  • Heather Barber says:

I love so many of the Montale fragrances so I can’t wait to try this one. Sébastien’s descriptions are always spot on!

  • Che Amoroso says:

I enjoyed hearing about the uniqueness of sumac, the memories he has associated with sumac, and it being the first time he has smelt or seen it in a fragrance. I enjoy the house and am looking forward to checking out this one.

  • I’ve never smelled or experienced sumac before! I love trying new scents, so I’m super keen to try this. Lemon juice without the tart sounds really good! I always love Sebastian’s honesty, regardless of where he gets his fragrances. I love his detailed note/scent descriptions, definitely a true fragrance expert, as opposed to a lot of other YouTube reviewers that just use buzzwords (mega compliment monster etc. *sigh*). Shout out from NY, USA.

  • Even though I never tried sumac before, I can imagine what it’s like based off of Sebastian’s review. I’m from Pennsylvania.

  • I have never heard of sumac! I was very intrigued by the intro so I hurried to hear more. I like how it sounds! Sumac intrigues me and how it blends with leafy tobacco with its fruity punch. Very interesting. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s knowledge about all the different notes in a fragrance. He does a great job with the note break down. I grew up thinking sumac was poisonous to eat and didn’t realize it’s used as a spice. Would love to try the new fragrance Oud Tobbacco.

  • Sebastian touches on every aspect on what makes each fragrance unique… from scent breakdown, sillage, some personal touches… always trying to educate and welcome with his honest and experienced presentations.

Although I grew up In New Jersey / Pennsylvania…. I was surrounded by woods filled with Sumacs. The color is such a deep and rich red. Always heard stories how you could make tea from it…. and taste profile is exactly as he described.

Love the scent profile…. add to that the Sumac and brings back some nice memories.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I enjoyed about Sebastian’s review was his ‘workman-like’ description of the fragrance,, as well as his experience with sumac. This was a subdued review (at least for him).

I’ve never heard of sumac before this review.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Sebastian has an interesting angle… I saw sumac listed and I immediately thought of poison sumac, so it was enlightening to hear all about the real deal (and besides, it made me crave Middle Eastern food). This sounds like quite an unexpected combination of notes, rather than the well-trod territory of so many scents.
    (SoCal)

  • I love Montale’s bold fragrances and I can’t wait to smell this one. I’m familiar with sumac in food but I’m so intrigued to discover it as a note in fragrance, especially in combination with the other notes. I really appreciated Sebastian’s description of the tobacco, not the usual ashy, smoky tobacco, but the fresher tobacco leaf. Before, I was concerned this would be similar to Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud but now I’m reassured and excited. I think I’m going to love this!

  • EricTheAviator says:

Sebastian the fragrance professor bring knowledge to us again.. It’s interesting to hear when he thinks something is unique, and a note surprises him! Would love to try!

  • Honestly, I loved hearing not only how he described sumac (which I’ve cooked with a lot before so I’m familiar with), but mostly how he described the Oud. I love tobacco and woody fragrances, but Oud is one scent that I haven’t completely been a fan of. I wanted to know if it was a strong “dirty” oud, or a more smooth silky Oud that blended into the background, and Sebastian described the Oud as more woody, which is right up my alley. So I’m entering! Because I would love to own this scent, it sounds beautiful and unique!

  • I appreciate Sebatian’s brief overview on how sumac is used, what it adds when used in cooking, and how it smells. It’s something I had never heard of so this knowledge of the diversity of this spice was awesome!

  • dorseyhorsey says:

I’ve cooked with sumac before, kind of surprised not to see it in perfumes at all. The review made it sound great, good disclaimer to let people know not to expect a huge oud. Sounds great!

  • Never heard of sumac, intrigued! Always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews. I own Chocolate Greedy from the house.

  • Lauren Yamasaki says:

I’ve heard of sumac but never knew what it was. Seems interesting! Especially as a note. I like how with his personal experience he was able to pain the picture in my mind of what it smells like. I’d really like to try it! 🙂

  • I liked Sebastians review because he always gives his honest opinions. I don’t have any Montale Fragrances yet and would like to try this one out. Thanks.

  • I love this house. Montale Sensual Instinct is one of my favorites and would love to win this. Enjoyed Sebastian’s review and thanks for the giveaway!

  • I have been really wanting to try this brand ,
Only having heard of it recently. I am half Persian and grew up eating sumac on kebabs and rice. : ) would love to experience it in a fragrance. I most enjoyed the description of the sumac and how it plays in the fragrance. Sounds lovely and the bottle! What a beautiful shade of red!

  • I’ve cooked with sumac and love it as a culinary ingredient. So, like Sebastien, I’m intrigued by the idea of it as a fragrance note. I like the Montale fragrances I’ve tried and I look forward to trying this one. I live in Oklahoma, USA.

  • I enjoyed learning about Red Sumac and hearing what makes him treasure the spice and how that goes well with why he really likes the fragrance. I also enjoyed the visual pictures that he adds to give the viewer a representation of what goes into the fragrance.

  • I like the detail in his videos. The way he compares multiple fragrances of one type is interesting. I purchased 3 Guerlain samples and eventually a full bottle because of his videos. I have heard of sumac but never tried it.

  • Diego Sebastian Diaz Bocanegra says:

I love the depth sebastian brings everytime he reviews something, and love when he brings memories about what that particular note means.

  • Sandy Benning says:

I love Montale perfumes. I am have only tried Intense Cafe and Black Oud so far and would love to have this in my collection and use it.

  • A short yet great review, i enjoyed the description given of sumac as i wasn’t familiar with it before.

  • forrestanez says:

I appreciate Sebastian letting us know that this is not your typical tobacco fragrance and that it is more leafy rather than ashy. I have previously owned Oudmazing and Fantastic Oud which I absolutely love! I have not seen this one, but based on the review, I sure would love to win this! I have never smelled Sumac in fragrance or cooking. Thanks again.

    I am from Hawaii, USA

  • One cannot predict from the picture of sumac that it has a smell with some resemblance to lemon juice. First time I have heard of sumac. Sebastian says the composition has prominent tobacco, citrusy, and cumin notes. Sumac is a bit like berry so the fragrance has fruity nuances, too and it has a warm base due to notes like tonka. USA.

  • Brian Braverman says:

Love Sebastian reviews and Montale fragrances. I was extremely intrigued with his description of Sumac and him not knowing any other fragrances that contain this spice. I have absolutely no knowledge of Sumac in a fragrance too, but consider myself extremely open minded. Would love to try.

  • Chris De Baun says:

Oh wow , i have had sumac in foods before. I bet this would be a superb addition to a fragrance. I am gonna have to see about samplng this one !!

  • IvanVelikov says:

I don’t know about the usage of sumac in the food industry, or the taste of it . But being in tailoring business I know it as top of the line dyeing and tanning agent , with properties almost second to none. Only highest quality leather should be treated with sumac , also it’s not an easy process by any means. It’s such a strong dyeing agent , you should NEVER touch it with your hands. It could even dye polished wood .
Montale is a house with cult following, for a good reason I believe. If you’re looking for powerhouse fragrances, Montale can offer a great variety. I own three Chocolate Greedy , Honey Aoud and my favorite Intense Cafe.
Different leafy tobacco, tartness, tonka bean and just a bit of incense , Oud Tobacco is intriguing.
Wonderful opportunity , and again great job by Sebastian
    USA

  • bigscoundrel says:

Sebastian’s breakdown for the type of tobacco used here really helped me figure out Oud Tobacco. I like the fresh, green tobacco but not the ashy kind, so this one sounds great to me. I have never used sumac before. New Jersey, USA

  • I love how sebastian described the fragrance as syrupy and tart and he made me really interested in experiencing the fresh tart smell of sumac alongside oud notes

  • I loved sebastians descriptions of tart and syrupy tobacco with the sumac. It sounds delicious and spicy!

  • I loved sebastians descriptions of tart and syrupy tobacco with the sumac. It sounds delicious and spicy!

    I am from Massachusetts, USA

  • What I liked about Sebastian’s video was learning all about red sumac, how it both tastes and smells. The only sumac I am familiar with is poison sumac, so I was not aware that sumac was used in cooking. And I would not have guessed that it has some similar properties to lemon. Once again, Sebastian has taught me something new. I’m in IL, USA for the giveaway, thanks!

  • Janine van der Merwe says:

I love the way Sebastian describes the fragrance. I use Sumac a lot in salads and it is a great addition. Never smelt it in fragrance before. As a fan of Montale fragrances I am positive the description of this fragrance is spot on.

  • Montale is one of my favorite houses, although the fragrance names vs notes often leave me confused. Where I live in the southern US, the name “sumac” refers to a poisonous type of oak plant that if contacted with bare skin will leave a blistering rash. I’d never heard of sumac as Sebastian describes and I’m interested to have a test of Montale’s Red Tobacco.

  • Thomas Stoner Jr says:

I enjoyed his content because sumac is an ingredient i have seen used in food however, it would be interesting in a fragrance. His content is not like alot reviews as old usual review.

  • Steve MILLER says:

Enjoy this house from what I’ve smelled. Honey Aoud is my favorite so far and I own it. Also have Chocolate Greedy and intense Cafe. Looking to expand my Montale collection.

  • A very different take on tobacco. The way Sebastian describes this makes me really want to try it. Montale Tobacco Oud seems completely different from any tobacco fragrance I’ve ever tried.
I am vaguely familiar with sumac. I always thought it was part of nutmeg though. It turns out I was confusing sumac with mace. A mace tobacco fragrance sounds pretty interesting too. But I’d love to try this lemony syrupy tobacco. I am in the US.

  • Anastasiia Novosad says:

HI! I like the review that Sebastian did a lot, like usual)!
I do not have a clue how does sumac smell, even though I love Middle Eastern food, and was many times in Israel. Maybe I tried it but did not know that it was sumac)
In the town where I was growing up we had only few nice stores that care good perfume, and Montale was the top of the top for everyone there. I loved to go there and put on myself Chocolate Greedy one and then many of my friends fell in love with this scent as well. The shop did not care a lot of scents, I think there was about 5 different perfumes or so)
I would love to win Oud Tobacco bottle giveaway!!)))
I like that this fragrance is a bit sweet and in the same time spicy!!!
I love oud smell very much as well and I like that it is not an overwhelming oud scent in this perfume.
I am as well happy that Tobacco is not too strong and not too dirty in this one as well!!!
I am living in Kansas, USA)
Wish everyone luck and a great weekend!!!

  • Sebastian always deliver excellent reviews, I have some montale fragrance I would love to have such unique like the oud tabaco.
    From Danville CA.

  • Yes I’ve heard of sumac before. I have like some from this house in the past, but I don’t remember the exact names. Like hearing about the lemon and fruity aspects of this. US

  • Sebastian reviews are the best he is the most imparcial and he know all you need to know
    love to win this one

  • This one was on my radar since it was announced and so glad to have this great note breakdown and review by Sebastian. I’m sold on the Sumac note, used it as spice a lot, and would be interesting to smell it perhaps extracted from the berry itself. The other aspect that appeals were a toned down Oud and pre-burnt tobacco. Cafleurebon thanks for the draw. A regular reader and Sebastian’s channel subscriber from Los Angeles, USA.

  • I’ve always wanted to try Montale/Mancera house, but never really have the money. But Sebastian’s reviews makes me want the house more and more! His description to Sumac makes me want to smell what that is since I’ve never heard to smelled something like that. The way he talks how the incense plays in the mix is interesting, but still amazing! Overall great review for the bottle notes and look of it!

  • Cassidy Doty says:

I have never heard of Sumac before but the way Sebastian describes the note and this fragrance as a whole has really drawn me in! I love the house of Montale and I love Sebastians reviews and descriptions, and this one is no different. He keeps it real, and has a way with describing these fragrances. He has sold me on this one so far and I would be honored to get the chance to experience it!

  • Blake Lieffers says:

Sebastian’s reviews are always very detailed. I use sumac often in my cooking. I’ve been wanting to try this fragrance for a while. I’d love to win a bottle. Thanks! Michigan.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I had no idea about Sumac and now I think I need to try cooking with it. I love tobacco fragrances and would love to try this one. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • It was so interesting hearing Sebastian talk about sumac. It is sprinkled in middle eastern dishes. Just like he said, He had never heard of it for fragrances. It is a spice and we smell so many in perfumes. I really loved his knowledgable review, as always. This Montale sounds so interesting. I love so many of their fragrances. Especially Intense Cafe. California

  • This fragrance is like something I will make up at my home. I love sweet fragrance and smokey. Oud notes, it would take me back to when my father smoke cigars. I know I would love this fragrance.

  • This fragrance is like something I will make up at my home. I love sweet fragrance and smokey. Oud notes, it would take me back to when my father smoke cigars. I know I would love this. Michigan USA

  • I’ve never heard of Sumac before! Sebastian always gives a down-to-earth and honest review. I love turning to him when considering adding a new fragrance to my collection!

  • patrick_348 says:

I have read about sumac in cook books and recipes, but have never tried it. This makes me want to try it both as a cook and in the fragrance. I liked how Sebastian tied this in to his life experience, and how he presented the prospect of the way a greenish tobacco note might smell. This sounds both unique and wearable. In the US in NC.

  • Sebastian always does a wonderful job of reviewing a perfume and this time is no exception. I’m intrigued by the sumac and the different scent of tobacco as opposed to Tom Ford. Also I’ m not a great fan of oud so “not too oudie” is a good thing for me. Many thanks to Sebastian and Michelyn for their reviews and many thanks to Europerfumes for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Loved Sebastian’s perspective on an interesting take on oud. Never tried Montale, maybe this will be the first.

  • I like that Sebastian’s Middle-Eastern heritage allows him to be familiar with so many exotic notes. I’ve never heard of sumac used in a fragrance, the only sumac I know is poison sumac and you don’t want that! Cheers from Indiana, USA.

  • New to oud fragrances, but trying to expand my knowledge and my senses. Sebastian has been very helpful in explaining many of the various offerings that are currently or formerly available. Would love to add this to my collection based on how Sebastian explained red sumac and how it balances out the scent over typical citrus notes. Not to mention that I enjoy cigars, hence my user name, so I would like to pick out the tobacco when I wear it. Really intriguing and I am absolutely excited at the chance to possibly win this. Thank you for the opportunity!

  • This sounds amazing!! With a name like oud tobacco it can be worrisome that it will be too heavy or dense, but I love when Sebastian said that it still has a fruitiness about it. So intrigued with the Sumac note.

  • Love Montale! I’ve been loving Arabians lately. I call it my oriental fougere haha. I was interested in Oud Tobacco right away because those notes are right at the top of my favorite list. I’ve never heard of sumac, so that’ll be a new experience. Hearing that Sebastian called it a unique take on tobacco makes me the most excited to try it. Putting it on my sample list for sure. Thank you for the chance to win! From Idaho, USA

  • Montale fragrances , and Sebastian reviews = perfect combination. Both I love – bold , straight to the point , honest , and you do remember both for a long time.
In my collection there’s 3 Montale fragrances, Ristretto Intense Cafe, Mukhalat and Amandes Orientales . All are sweet , long lasting clubbing fragrances.
From Oud Tobacco i personally except more tobacco, and less sweetness , pleasing tartness from the sumac and the usual for Montale longevity.
I’m a big believer in herbology , and sumac I know for its health benefits , helps stomach discomfort , and it’s also a hemostatic Herb.
Thank you Sebastian , Europerfumes and Cafleurebon . What a chance. In US

  • doveskylark says:

I love sumac. I often buy at Middle Eastern shops in New York. I love to sprinkle it on hummus and even guacamole. I just love the sour taste of sumac. I also love citrusy and tart notes in fragrances. Sour notes with leather, oud, and tobacco: yes, definitely. I enjoyed Sebastian’s description of all the notes. I am intrigued by the syrupy quality Sebastian mentioned.
    I live in the USA.

  • If you like Turkish and Middle Eastern food, you know the taste of Sumac , period. It’s in most dishes with rise.
Oud Tobacco I’ve not yet smelled, but it’s is definitely appealing to me, because of the tobacco leaves, the bitterness , and mild incense lurking in the background.
Montale is one of my favorite houses – atm i do own 11 bottles. Not sure what’s my favorite one , i was wearing Dark Purple yesterday.

I always like Sebastian’s videos. He does an excellent job on single reviews as well as breaking them down by theme. He has a particular taste in oud so if he likes it I know it will not be offensive. Thanks for the draw. From USA

  • Sumac with tobacco and some Oud is an interesting combo. I do eat sumac with some foods. Depends on the dish. Enjoyed the review and thanks, Ca

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Sebastian.

This sounds like such an interesting fragrance. Montale really likes to play around with their ouds. I’ve really not smelt a fragrance with sumac either. I’m familiar with the floral acidity of sumac and it has a mild astringent floral smell. It’s really cool to see that Sebasitan also hasn’t experienced a Sumac fragrance before. The concept is fantastic. Berry like tartness, tobacco, incense, orange blossom and oud.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Werno says:

I really liked hearing about the sumac note during Sebastian’s review. I’ve never smelled it before in a fragrance. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to try this soon.

  • Would love to win this fragrance! It was great to hear Sebastian talking about sumac – during my time in Lebanon, I was able to enjoy it a lot and it really seems like a great idea to pair fresh tobacco notes with sumac.

  • Every time I think about Montale I think about top performance. Vanilla Cake lasts forever on me , Sensual Instinct is super strong too. Sampled the second one because of Sebastian Cafleurebon review , and it was so impressive I got it next week.
Oud Tobacco tobacco leaves, incense, berries and the new sumac note I’m curious about. Compared to Vanilla Cake and Sensual Instinct feels classy and elegant.
Never even heard about sumac before.
Thank you for the generosity, the review was enjoyable too

  • No experience with sumac that I remember, though may have had it in Lebanese and Middle Eastern cuisine. So Montale Oud Tobacco would be good one to try. I like Tom Ford’s Tobacco Oud, but it seems from Michelyn’s introduction and Sebastian’s review that this is different. Love Montale’s fragrances, especially Honey Aoud and Black Aoud. What I like about Sebastian’s reviews is how he connects the perfume notes with down to earth things people have experience with, so without really trying the perfume, one can imagine what it may be like. Thanks for the generous draw and review. Writing from the USA.

  • Is it just me, or Sumac is actually dyeing agent? I mean it’s either different strains used in perfumery, and for making food, or Sumac is just multipurpose kind of fruit ?
Getting compliments is important to me, and one of the reasons to get, or not certain fragrance. One thing is for certain, Montale fragrances do get me lots of positive attention, at least in my surroundings . The are also quite powerful, projecting for hours.
Oud Tobacco is not a childish fragrance, but for grown up men , and women. Tobacco leaves drying on a rack , incense and tonka is what makes it so appealing to me.
My favorite Montale is Sensual Instinct, but the one that gets me most compliments is Wild Pears.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • I both know Sumac, and Oud Tobacco, I have a sample 🙂
I do not know Sumac as fragrance ingredient , but from culinary point of view I know it very well, and that’s how I’ll judge it
You can find Sumac in all Mediterranean, North Africa, all Caucasian region, Balkan cuisines , and not just in the Middle East.
Works great for barbecue, to marinate fish and chicken meat, for salads , of course rise too. Mixed with yogurt it’s served with meatballs and kebabs
Cakes , puddings , tartelettes , as traditionally trained in Paris Pastry Chef I can give you dozens examples how to use it . All Pastry Chefs use it , often with red berries, I’ll stop here or my post will become too long.
Oud Tobacco to me is a unique blend of humidor tobacco, a little bit of incense and fizzy , and sparkling Grape Fanta/Soda.
Not that you asked, but I’ll share anyway, my favorite Montale is Dark Purple.
Appreciate the review and the giveaway campaign

I loved Sebastian’s review of Montale’s Oud Tobacco. What interests me about this fragrance is the unique Red Sumac note which I never heard of before that gives off a berry syrup vibe in this fragrance, I also like the fresh tobacco leaf vibe and wearable oud present in this fragrance. It sounds like a unique offering from Montale I would love to try. I am from the USA.

I love that Sebastian got into the history of the ingredients. Also the smell description was so precise I could almost feel it!

  • Haven’t gotten to try any Montale yet, but the Oud/Tobacco combination is one I appreciate in Chopard’s Oud Malaki. Sebastian signaling out the sumac is an interesting twist and one I would be keen to try out. CA, USA

  • Sebastian bringing new fragrance to my unending “gotta try” which I love but also hate. I became interested in sumac after watching Bon Appetit video. Would love to try this one out!

  • Hendrix Wilson says:

Sebastian has a special way he speaks about notes and this video made him transform to his childhood when he first experienced sumac.

  • Never heard of Sumac but really looking forward to this new ingredient in perfumery. Sebastian always describes perfumes exactly the way you spect them to smell when you try them the first time.
