Mona di Orio Domaine (Fredrik Dalman) 2023 + Gauzy Muguet Giveaway

Mona di Orio Domaine

Maison Mona Di Orio Creative Director Jeroen Oude Sogtoen and in-house perfumer Fredrik Dalman have created a most affecting homage to the late Master Perfumer Edmond Roudnitska and his famed laboratory which opened in 1946 – initially named Art & Parfums, it continues the tradition today under the appellation Accords.

Their new Mona di Orio release, Domaine – is truly a Scented Skein which binds Monsieur Roudnitska, the late Mona Di Orio, and perfumer Fredrik Dalman to one another in a marvelously lyrical manner: via olfaction, history and tutelage. Perched high in the Alpes-Maritimes, in the picturesque village of Cabris – Monsieur Roudnitska’s Domaine Sainte Blanche is where Mona spent fifteen years in apprenticeship with the master, and Fredrik received his first briefs as a junior perfumer. Of La Domaine, Edmond Roudnitska engraved in stone: “Je ferai fleurir les pierres et chanter les oiseaux” – “I shall make the stones flower and the birds sing”. And that he did.

Mssr. Roudnitska’s immortal 1956 creation Diorissimo is the reigning paragon of photorealistic lily-of-the-valley (muguet) as most of us know it: melodic freshness, crisp and ever-vernal in its floral verdancy. It captures a delicately animalic note, the moist forest floor, stemminess. Mona di Orio Domaine presents us with a very different visage, as viewed through a gauzy romantic lens – that of The Dream Lily.

Fredrik Dalman has composed a hauntingly musky muguet seemingly fashioned of palest angel skin coral or the celadon-glazed ceramics which originated in China during the Han dynasty (206 BCE- 220 CE). Quite simply, the perfumer’s lily floats effortlessly, a fragrant nebula of tenderness which lingers on the flesh much as the memory of a skilled and thoughtful lover’s caress will. Perfectly rounded, ethereal and pastel-hued, Domaine embodies the odor of ineffable compassion; if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell.

Mona di Orio Domaine was inspired by lily of the valley

Mona di Orio Domaine is velvety, weightless and gracefully persistent: it clings closely and for considerable duration. Periodically, it will gently waft into your olfactory orbit unannounced – just when you thought that it had faded. When sprayed on cloth, it is long-lived – and because the jus is limpidly transparent, it’s not likely to stain most hardy fabrics. Fredrik Dalman’s coup lies in his ability to straddle the tightrope between innocence and carnal knowingness – which contributes to Domaine’s appeal. That sensuous ambiguity is conveyed with refinement as well as dignity, and is part of its charm.

In the words of Matsuo Basho:  haru kaze ni / fukidashi warau / hana mogana
A Spring breeze is blowing
I’m bursting with laughter
— wishing for flowers ~ Spring, 1668

Notes: lily of the valley accord, expansive soft musks, perceived woody notes (no notes listed)

Bottle gifted me by Mona do Orio – many thanks! I will cherish it.  My nose is my own…

  • I enjoyed learning about the absolutely beautiful notes of this fragrance and how unique they are. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I love how Ida conveyed the weightless beauty of Domaine and her reference to Matsuo Basho’s haiku. She created such a clear vision of experiencing this perfume in my mind. Thank you for the giveaway! I live in Maryland, USA.

  • Lilly of the valley and its beauty. I am glad it is getting a new look by an amazing perfumer. As a bright note mixed with earthly or green notes it sounds amazing…
“Velvety, weightless and persistent” is what I love in perfumes..

  • John Michael Jones says:

Love how Ida says the fragrance, “gently wafts into your olfactory orbit unannounced,” because to me this is what separates a masterpiece from the run of the mill fragrance. I miss Mona & would be honored to win a bottle of this. I live in Boston Massachusetts USA.

  • ScentedClown says:

I very much enjoy the associations with colour dotes through as it gives me an easier time processing how each section of the scent presents its self.

As often at times when I smell something I think of where it would be on the colour spectrum

  • Gauzy, graceful, and romantically whispered lily-of-the valley sounds perfect for the coming spring. Lovely review from Ida. I would love to give it a sniff myself! Hello from the USA!

  • FragranceIsMe says:

I always find Ida to have a wonderful way with words when describing olfactory terms. The notes in this creation are calling my name. US

  • Oh my, the description of Mona di Orio Domaine makes it seem so ethereal and romantic, quite different from Diorissimo. I love how two perfumers can work with the same note and create very different compositions. Domaine is a perfume I knew I needed to try when I read it described as bottled kindness and compassion. I think we could all use more of both. ~USA

  • I love Roudnitska’s work and I think I have almost every fragrance he ever created. Mona di Orio Domaine is an exciting release as it pays tribute to Roudnitska and his lily of the valley masterpiece diorissimo. Mona di Orio Domaine seems like a modern interpretation of lily of the valley with musky vibes. I am in US.

  • I was very touched by the phrase that if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell (Domaine). I agree with this. The smell of lily of the valley for me is the quintessence of love, kindness, awakening and anticipation of happiness. I am sure that Jeroen Oude Sogtoen and Fredrik Dalman have preserved and carried through the fragrance a tribute to Mona and Edmond. A very beautiful and poetic description of Ida, the sensual ambiguity of the lily of the valley as a component is felt very well through this description.
    Kind regards from Belgium

  • What an enchanting perfume: a core of lily of the valley and then an aura of sensuality around it – as Ida masterfully said, a scent which managed to “straddle the tightrope between innocence and carnal knowingness”. It happens so often to either have a perfume that is so clean it becomes sterile, or so filled with everything, it becomes vulgar. When a perfumer manages to keep the stillness while adding the charm, which is something that Fredrik Dalman seems to have managed in Domaine, magic is made…
Would love to smell this, from the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Thank you Ida for this beautiful and fresh review.
Lilly of the valley, musk and wood are such an awesome combination. Clean and clear like a spring surrounding the person who wears it.
    Hugs from EU

How absolutely divine, dear Ida. You have me spellbound amid these drifting waxen flowers, so intoxicating. I dream of such a bottle. Muguet always casts a spell and you have written a rare incantation. Every word enjoyed and devoured avidly. Merci Beaucoup. I live in SW France

  • Mona di Orio is a favorite fragrance house and Amytis was an early niche purchase for me. I enjoyed how the phrase “ I will make the stones flower and the birds to sing” embodies the earliest spring flowers when there is still some snow left to melt.
    I live in the US

  • I loved Ida’s description of the weightless but lasting nature of this fragrance, and her comparisons to coral and celadon china. I love muguet fragrances, and this one sounds extraordinary! I live in the USA. Thanks for doing this!

  • Lily of the Valley is just one of those floral notes that makes me feel so beautiful. The description “Mona di Orio Domaine is velvety, weightless and gracefully persistent” was perfectly put! It’s such a delicate fragrance that dances around your body. I think the very first time I was introduced to this note was when I was a child – my mom used to wear Jovan Lily of the Valley. So, for me, anything with this note is very nostalgic. This sounds like such a gorgeous fragrance and I would be so blessed to win it!

I live in northern PA – USA.

  • Really like how this is described as haunting, etheral, and compassionate. The lily of the valley gives it a timelessness, but the mix with the musks really draws me in most because Ida describes it so romantically.
Would love to win a bottle!

  • I love Ida’s reviews because they’re accurate and kind. What did I enjoy the most-discovering the new fragrance in this unbelievable fragrance house. I had a small bottle of Suede de Suede, and when the corona virus hit I still had to go to work, and I got a bit scared of the virus. I wore Suede de Suede, and it gave me comfort from its beauty and complexity. I wrote to their IG page, to tell them this, and got the kindest response, telling me that we, as a world population, would get through this. The fact that this company would take time to address one person’s fears was incredible to me. I cherish this house and I always will. The scents are innovative and the quality is top notch. Thank you for the review, and for the chance to try something so special. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. Think I’ll wear Dojima today, because we’re getting a break from winter storms and I want to smell like rice and amber and warm spices 🙂

  • As a gardener, a beautifully composed floral perfume is always welcomed. The description of a “moist forest floor” sounds fabulous and inviting. Thanks Ida for sharing your thoughts. Mich USA

  • lilyofthevalley says:

Beautiful tribute to an exquisite flower fragrance! Symbol of purity and happiness and harbinger of spring warmth and longer days, it is also known by many names muguet, lily of the valley, lirio de los valles, or lacramioara, but by a singular unmistakeable scent. Ida’s snippet “if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell” spoke to me the most as kindness is one important human attribute on its way to extinction. It brought to mind this whimsical idea that Domaine’s liquid kindness, once diffused, will waft its “ineffable compassion” throughout the world lingering for “considerable duration,” hopefully long enough to make a difference. Hailing from Ohio, USA!

  • Thank you Ida!
I enjoyed the quote from this review “I shall make the stones flower and the birds sing” – very evocative!
If I won this I would love to gift it to my mother.
    Thanks from Canada!

  • I love that Ida described Domaine as velvety and weightless – it sounds perfect for spring! I would love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA.

  • I love this lovely tribute to iconic Roudnitska. I love that the review is dreamy but also provides info. Im from croatia

  • Firstly, I really love lily of the valley and, for me, one cannot go wrong with it.
Tge oaet I enjoyed the most about Ida’s review is: “the perfumer’s lily floats effortlessly, a fragrant nebula of tenderness which lingers on the flesh much as the memory of a skilled and thoughtful lover’s caress will. Perfectly rounded, ethereal and pastel-hued, Domaine embodies the odor of ineffable compassion; if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell.”

  • I liked reading about Mona di Orio Domaine in Ida’s review, especially the contrast with Dior’s Diorissimo. I also liked Bassho’s haiku in the end. Most of all, these words by Ida summed up the review perfectly for me: “Perfectly rounded, ethereal and pastel-hued, Domaine embodies the odor of ineffable compassion; if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell.” Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • That sensuous ambiguity’ of the perfumery composition that Ida mentions is perfectly conveyed through the vocabulary that she picks up for her description, juggling with metaphors and contrasts to create full immersion in the ambiance of the fragrance. I find this really captivating.
Thank you for another beautiful review!
    Greetings from Switzerland!

  • Lily of the valley is the quintessential spring floral to me. The sweetness and delicacy of the flower promises new beginnings and a certain innocence. I own a decant of Diorissimo (unsure of the vintage) and I would love to see how Maison Mona Di Orin’s Domaine compares. Ida’s description of it as a dream lily makes me think it would be even more ethereal than Diorissimo. MD, USA.

  • kusudamakitten98 says:

I enjoyed the line “if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell”; it made me curious about the fragrance and I would love to experience it myself. I also found the comparison to the ceramics from the Han dynasty wonderful, as these objects are delicate and beautiful.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I can like lily-of-the-valley in fragrances, and I appreciated learning about: muguet, and Edmond Roudnitska’s photorealistic lily-of-the-valley paragon. I gather from Ida’s review that this fragrance would be easy for me to like. I’m interested to see what the lily-of-the-valley is like in this, along with the woody notes and the musks. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I really enjoyed the backstory that Ida gives in the beginning of these reviews, they really add a sense of depth and insight into these fragrances. Mona di orio Domaine sounds incredible with the lily and musk notes with good longevity. From TX, USA.

  • Oh, I so enjoy the green delicacy of lily of the valley.
What a lovely review, especially the phrase, ‘if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell’.
Thank you so much for the drawing.
    I live in the US.

  • Ida’s review of Mona Di Orio Domaine is, as always, so vivid and picturesque. I can almost feel how velvety, weightless and gracefully persistent it is just from her words. Ii also like that it clings closely and for considerable duration.

  • “A Spring breeze is blowing..” from Ida’s description of “Domaine”. It reminds me of the air around me when the first lilies of the valley would pop in my grandparents’ garden beginning of spring. Innocent times.. I would love to recreate them on my skin. Thank you for your generosity of words.

    I live in Portugal.

  • Sally Rosendale says:

“if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell.” -that in a nutshell is one of the most beautiful descriptions of a perfume. I’m a therapist so the concept of kindness is so important to me. I live in FL.

  • Ida always impress me buy her wonderful way to describe olfactory terms. The notes in this creation seem to be amazing . From France

  • I usually not a bit fan of floral fragrances. But everything about this perfume sounds just magical also this brand just cannot do something ordinary. Every creation is a masterpiece! I loved the photos, she was just so cute… I live in France, EU.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a stunning review of what appears to be a stunning fragrance! This one must not be missed! Thank you so much for the beautiful introduction! ❤️

  • I love the smell of lily of the valley, but it is hart to find perfumes with this note which are unisex. Edmond Roudnitska is a monumental personality in the perfumery, so it is so nice that other perfumers are creating some kind of tribute to their masters. I live in Poland.

  • I love reading about the connections, familial and mentoring… it’s fascinating to see the threads along the way. And to watch the signatures develop. I think my favorite part of Cafleurebon is reading about the histories and back stories of the perfumers and their creations, the procurement of ingredients and how they work is fascinating too (looking forward to reading more from Michael Schrammel!) and of course praying I win a giveaway! But really the back stories are always intriguing. And often give a heightened respect for the work behind it.
I would absolutely cherish this Lily if the Valley fragrance.
The haiku is beautiful thank you.
I am in US. Thank you for the opportunity!!

Given such a rich history of the house and understanding their nature of giving an all encompassing devotion to accords and structure that make exemplary perfume I really need to smell this potion that involve my favorite silvery toned musk floral note. Michigan, USA

  • I enjoyed Ida’s review of Mona Di Orio Domaine, for giving insight into the fragrance and all the notes and nuances, and for providing some education on the brand itself. It sounds really lovely, and your writing is eloquent.
thank you for the giveaway, from Canada 🙂

  • bigscoundrel says:

Domaine sounds like it could become a signature office scent for me or my SO. New Jersey, USA

  • This sounds beautiful – the emotional impression Ida’s review conveys makes me excited to try this perfume and the comparison to celadon-glazed ceramics especially intrigues me. My mother used to wear Diorissimo so I would like her to try Moa di Orio Domaine too. I’m in the US, thank you for the draw!

  • Honestly, how can one resist this statement in the review?
Fredrik Dalman’s coup lies in his ability to straddle the tightrope between innocence and carnal knowingness – which contributes to Domaine’s appeal. That sensuous ambiguity is conveyed with refinement as well as dignity, and is part of its charm.

  • Great review by the one and only Ida.
To be honest this is the first time I listen or read something about the brand Mona Di Orio,a but I have to say that Domaine looks so interesting with the lily of the valley and the musks. I .love that the fragrance is so clean and embodies kindness, just wonderful.
I hope I win this one.

  • Great review by Ida, as usual. It is nice to see a perfume composed by a Swedish perfumer. It’s not often you see that, and as a swede myself, it makes me very proud. The scent sounds lovely, with Lily-of-the-valley being one of the notes that I am trying to get into more, as I find it truly beautiful. Hopefully I can win and try it out myself.

    I live in Sweden/EU.

  • I really enjoyed how the fragrance is described on the review, how the different notes are presebted.I live in Greece,Eu.

  • Beautiful review Ida! I think Mr. Roudnitska deserves all the homages and this exquiste fragrance Domaine could be one more of an endless list. Muguet, which gold standard is Diorissimo (floral and animalic) by Roudnitska , for me is the epitome of transparency. Domaine by the hand of Fredrik Dalman is more “romantic” in its transparency: ethereal and tender and. Love to read form Ida that if kindness was a perfume should be like Domaine. Ethereal but persistant like waves on the shore of a calm sea. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ida’s review of Mona Di Orio Domaine because Maison Mona Di Orio Creative Director Jeroen Oude Sogtoen and in-house perfumer Fredrik Dalman have created a most affecting homage to the late Master Perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. • Really interesting introduction and comparison between Diorissimo and Mona di Orio Domaine. And this line stood out: “Perfectly rounded, ethereal and pastel-hued, Domaine embodies the odor of ineffable compassion; if kindness were a perfume, this is how it would smell.” Beautiful! This take on muguet sounds lovely and delicate.

Thanks for the beautiful review, Ida

Creating a fragrance that captures the essence of Lily of the Valley is a special feat.

The wrods of Matsuo Basho indeed convey the essence of Domain – the tenderness of spring and the loss of Mona.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Absolutely lovely review Ida! What I enjoyed most about Ida’s review of Mona Di Orio Domaine is how she describes it as a “dreamy” lily fragrance with hauntingly musky muguet that is ethereal and brings to mind the delicate, pastel-hued celadon-glazed ceramics of Han China. I have a special place in my heart for delicate lily fragrances, and this one sounds particularly lovely. I live in the US.

  • I enjoyed the way Ida describes the overall vibe of the fragrance in a way that brings it to life. I’m in California.
