Milano Fragranze Cortile review

As I stepped into the auditorium, high ranking guests from the worlds of fashion, media and politics mingle. There was an electricity and expectation in the air. The red carpet and the stunning floral arrangements lured me towards the central theme of the evening; sapphire blue and gold bottles encasing the scents soon presented. It is 20.30 on a Friday evening, in Bucharest. However, the focus is set clearly on Milan, the house is Milano Fragranze, the new brand founded in 2020 by Alessandro Brun. My dear friend Izabela Juncu transfixed the audience with her unique presence. You  felt the excitement build as one by one the audience was treated to a sensory experience of luxury and style.

Fast forward and I was in discussion with venerable guests, and we took the opportunity to converse about which fragrances made an impression. I mentioned that each perfume has a particular theme and effect as if locations on a scented landscape. I chose Milano Fragranze Cortile for my new acquaintance to try, she  immediately  was taken hold by the scent. Its uniqueness and beauty apparent to her and we discuss the merits of such a fragrance long into the evening.

Milano Fragranze is a tribute to the city of Milan and is a range inspired by a number of themes, which tell specific stories of the architecture, communities, and fashion that Milan is famous for. A looking glass into the peculiarities and wonders of such historic locations. For Milano Fragranze Cortile (Courtyard) Michelle Moellhausen’s interpretation was chosen to reflect the specific ambience of the ballatoios (balconies) where couples enjoy a relaxing vibe, whilst taking in the smells of rich foliage and ristretto coffee that hangs in the evening air.

Milano Fragranze Cortile gives the impression of, ‘Rilassati e divertiti’ the ability to relax and enjoy the surroundings of which we are in. Tranquil peacefulness, an oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of daily routine provides a moment of calm reflection. I envisage tumbling borders of jasmine from the verandas and couples courting their adoration for each other over coffee at dusk. The idea of this scent is to recreate and frame a specific mood and image within one’s mind to glimpse into the sensibilities of Milanese life.

I am sure of Alessandro’s vision for Milano Fragranze Cortile undoubtedly had been specific in his reason for choosing Michelle Moellhausen. Surely this is because she was able to capture the impression and present it beautifully as the perfume is balanced just within the realms of moderation without overdosing ingredients, which could potentially ruin the overall vision of the brand.

On reading the notes, one may consider Cortile a floral bomb with a rudimentary use of coffee thrown in. This is not the case. Yes, the jasmine sambac is sensual and the coffee bean extract gives an energetic aspect to the scent. However, neither overwhelm. Instead, the character of the scent gives various glimpses through intelligent use of accompanying ingredients.

To begin, we enter the courtyard at evening time and experience the whiff of ristretto mingling with cinnamon bark. The coffee note is specific to a shot of ristretto, as it is sweeter and more intense than a regular espresso.  The addition of cinnamon bark enhances the sweetness and adds a slightly invigorating texture and a warm and balmy nuance. This lively aspect bolstered with the introduction of bergamot and violet leaves Absolut. It is a photo-realistic viewpoint of senses taking in the communal quarter as opposed to one specific aspect at a time. Imagine couples and families taking in their evening in such a convivial and communal atmosphere.

Ristretto

Rather than a deep transition, the headiness of jasmine sambac quickly becomes apparent and acts to anchor the scent. You can imagine tracing your fingers through the hanging foliage and picking at ripe fruits of peach and apricots via the subtle use of osmanthus. The peacefulness of the setting enhanced by the slightest touch of tuberose and ylang-ylang dosed in tiny amounts.

Enhancing the experience further through the courtyard, you brush past a couple making their way out into the centre for an evening of festivities or to the galleria. Subtle wafts of suede leather emanating from couture handbags and leather jackets that adorn these perfectly styled and pristine people. This base of amber, suede and Indonesian sandalwood brings a touch of class and elegance to the fragrance. There is a slightly dusty and powdery beauty to the scent that mixes so well, giving an aspect of the traditional setting and covings of the architecture surrounding you. Thus, the scene is set.

Milano Fragranze Cortile is a stylish scent that has a unique blend that one does not come across often. The choice of ingredients ensure that it is suitable for both casual and formal wear; it is better to describe the vibe of the fragrance rather than list it in a specific category. The Milano Fragranze range is meant to stimulate emotional connections and provide direct links to attainable dreams and purposefully priced by the founders at a budget, which all can access. When asked about the perfume creation process Alessandro Brun mentioned recently that over 150 submissions presented and only a handful chosen. The successful entries were ones that encapsulated the fusion of the multicultural and historical context of Milan in all its rareness.

As for Cortile, I leave the final words to Alessandro,

In the hot summer all doors are opened on the ballatoio.
You can smell the evening coffee of every mamma in every house.
Two lovers are kissing in the shade.
In riches’ houses and working class’ alike, the jasmine in full bloom smells the same.”

  • GennyLeigh says:

The quality of the notes in Cortile is noteworthy. The sourcing of the sandalwood and coffee extracts and the number of e.o’s and absolutes is impressive. This sounds unique and perfectly balanced and encapsulates life in Milan. MD, USA.

  • Jake Dauod says:

What interests me the most is the description of the fragrance. I love the vision behind Cortile, and Karl did such a fantastic job of describing the feel of the scent. I honestly love all of the notes, I want to smell this juice so bad. I also would love to go to Italy to live the experience that Cortile tries to emanate (hopefully in two years to study abroad). My personal favorite note is cinnamon so I am very pleased that it is in this composition. I really like that it’s combined with the coffee, and I am very curious about how this develops on skin. I think this is a must try for me before the end of the year. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • The notes in this one are quite interesting. I would love to see how the coffee and tea notes mix with the tuberose. Seems quite lively with a cozy, relaxing dry down that would be amazing on a lovely summer day.

    From USA.

  • I’m enjoying reading about the courtyard where coffee is served under a canopy of foliage scented with white flowers. Cortile sounds intoxicating. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • AleksCipri says:

I’ve enjoyed all of the previous reviews of fragrances from this line. I love Masque Milano and hope to sample all of the Milano Fragranze fragrances very soon. Karl’s review really intrigues me. I’m not a big coffee note lover, but from the review I get the impression that neither coffee nor flowers dominate here. I am a huge fan of both jasmine and tuberose. I love cinnamon and I love sandalwood based fragrances. So I think Cortile has all of the elements of a fragrance I might truly adore. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Karl really set a scene and conveyed the feelings evoked by Cortile. I enjoyed learning the inspiration behind the scent and it sounds like it is very much captured in the bottle. The ristretto with cinnamon mixing with white jasmine sounds great and the added touch of osmanthus evoking peaches and apricots adds another aspect that interests me all culminating with sandalwood, amber and a suede accord that are the finishing touches to the picture painted for us, its all very inviting. Would love to be transported to that scene in reality and by Cortile. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Milano Fragrance – Cortile sounds wonderful for Summertime. It’s a coffee/floral scent. Rich, warm. Love the idea of sitting in a countyard. Everything about this Fragrance says Italy. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Skin.On.Me says:

    What a beautiful, vivid description!
I’m interested in the coffee – flowers combo as it seems unusual, but Karl claims jasmine sambac is sensual and the coffee bean extract gives an energetic aspect to the scent, but neither overwhelm. Very intriguing!

  • I am intrigued by Milano Fragranze Cortile because of its unique notes. On paper it seems like this should be intense but Karl gives the impression that it is smooth and calming, capturing a moment in scent. The perfume sounds like something I would enjoy. ~Indiana, USA

As a coffee lover , this fragrances warms my heart. I smelled some coffe based fragrances and they are something that i want to add to my collection. A must if i may. Being that you differentiate a smell of an espresso and a ristretto, the add of cinnamon and violet leaf, all of this sound so interesting to me. I live in Romania.

Cortile sounds absolutely delicious, with its combination of cinnamon sprinkled coffee and jasmin as main players and a shrould of white flowers (that I love) and suede supporting it. Truly seems to capture the sophistication of Milan, while still keeping the homeliness of Italy.

  • This sounds absolutely gorgeous. I could almost put myself on the balcony you’re describing with a cup of sweet cinnamon scented coffee in my hand and the wafting smell of Jasmine as I relax before my day begins. I love your way for words and this fragrances seems right up my alley. Also, who does it need a little bit of rest and relaxation these days? I’m located in the US in the state of Virginia.

  • Great review Karl! I loved the introduction and the detailed history in the making of the whole brand and I especially loved Karl’s description of the fragrance, it was so vivid I could smell it in my nose! Amazing! Love the brand also, every single fragrance I smelled, I loved! They all have the same unique DNA which I absolutely adore and this one seems like another winner from the house! Not my first Milano Fragranze giveaway, maybe this time i get lucky! Coffee based greatness, elegant yet playfull. Great review and thank you for the opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • I truly want to win a bottle of “Cortile”. I’ve been having a discovery set of Milano Fragranze’s first eight fragrance releases and “Cortile” is one of the fragrances which I like. My favorite from that set is by far “Basilica”, and I’ve also been enjoying “Diurno” and other ones too. I found “Cortile” to be enjoyable and unlike anything else I have in my fragrance collection. I find that the floral aspects of this fragrance are what’s most prominent. I agree with Karl in regards to certain things which he said about this fragrance, e.g. “Milano Fragranze Cortile is a stylish scent that has a unique blend that one does not come across often. The choice of ingredients ensure that it is suitable for both casual and formal wear”. I live in the U.S.A.

  • roxhas1cat says:

Stylish scent with a unique blend has caught my attention. I like coffee scents and the violet with it is interesting to me. I love the Basilico and Panattone from this line. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Constancesuze says:

Hi! I’m in the US and think this sounds lovely. I’ve only spent a little time in Milan and less time with this brand than I would like, although I love Masque Milano. The combination of jasmin, cinnamon bark, and ristretto sounds lovely.

  • I’m always on the lookout for my perfect coffee related frag and this one sounds super interesting. I am also a powder fan so the little touch of it intrigues me here. USA

  • I am especially struck by the addition of ylang ylang in the note description. I always love it when this yellow floral is added to a floral fragrance, which I find gives it a depth and dimension. I also am intrigued by the use of cinnamon which I have to admit I am a lover of as well. So this particular note combination sounds warm and vibrant! Thank you! I am in the US.

  • Thanks Karl for taking us to a evening in a Milan courtyard. This is what Sig. Brun pretended when he thought about this fragrance. I love several Masque Milano fragrance and I bought a discovery kit of Milano Fragranze. As you say the idea in the entire collection is recreate and frame a place, mood and image of Milanese life. Here in Cortile is the beautiful image of a ballatoio (kinda balcony) with its life at dusk. Mme. Moellhausen captures, as you say photo-realistically, this summer moment calmly: Sipping and espresso (or cappuccino with the cinnamon touch) while the white flowers ( jasmine with tuberose and ylang-ylang) scent the air. Not in a floral bomb way but in a peaceful and slow way. Lovely and unique blend. I live in Spain, EU.

  • When I saw this on Instagram, I was instantly hooked and excited to read the whole review. It did not disappoint. I’m always striving for that relaxed where you are feeling, the sort of “be here now” of it all, and Karl’s review makes me think Milano Fragranze Cortile delivers. I am in the US

  • What a beautiful review! Such a rich nuances of this perfumes.
Suede, sandalwood with flowers- would be great !!

  • Jeremy Upshaw says:

I’ve never dipped my toe into this line, but I’ve come to respect the fullness of the intentions behind the genius that is Alessandro the more I read about it. As a Greek American, I remember visiting the ‘old country’ the first time in summer; the adults reclining around a dock-side table until late hours, the steaming demitasse filled to the rim with strong, sweet coffee, licorice alcohol colliding with smells of seaside florals, leather sandals and woody earthiness wafting from the ancient church doors across the street. I have not been fortunate enough to go back to visit, but I would love to marinate in that experience once more. Oklahoma, USA.

  • I love that this comes across as a scent for all occasions, as I tend to love to wear my perfumes whenever I want. I also would love a chance to travel to Milan, as it was not on my only trip to Italy. In maryland.

  • I love a good jasmine perfume. And coffee is a seriously underrated note, so I am very happy to see it here. I think white florals and coffee would work together fantastically. Karl’s review gave me an almost picturesque impression of the scent of Cortile.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • ScentsofMike says:

I love the vision described by Alessandro. A lovely warm evening on the balcony and you can smell every momma’s coffee. Sounds lovely and makes me want to be there. These bottles are also beautifully done. Milano Fragranze seems like a great house to explore.
    New Jersey, USA.

  • I enjoyed Karl’s review of Cortile. It sounds like a unique blend… with notes of jasmine sambac, coffee… with a base of amber, suede and Indonesian sandalwood. This seems to be a representation of the complex of Milan.
    Maryland, US.

  • AndradaIl says:

Love those coffee notes. Also i prefer ristretto than a bit latte so i would not mind also wearing it. Sounds like a great fragrance! Serious, descriptive yet with a touch of sexiness. Thank you for the opportunity! I live in EU.

  • Karl described this as a very unique fragrance with notes that sometimes perhaps wouldn’t get along well, but in this case they do because of intelligent use of accompanying ingredients.

  • What struck me based on Karl’s review was how he spoke about the “vibe” of Cortile rather than focusing on any one ingredient or classifying it into a specific category of perfumery. Indeed, Milano Fragranze is full of offerings that are meant to transport you to those places/vibes/experiences that Alessandro Brun captures so eloquently. Cortile, to me, is so relaxing but also at the same time uplifting. It makes me yearn for vacation where my wife and I often wake to enjoy a cup of coffee together and watch from our balcony as the rest of the world begins anew. I’ve had the opportunity to sample this one (thanks to CaFleureBon!) and would very much love to own a full bottle. Thanks, as always, for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois!

  • wandering_nose says:

I like the atmosphere Karl builds around Cortile. The vibe of courtyards, balconies and a tiny peek into daily life of the Milanese people. The coffee and jasmine sambac combination steals my heart straight away, and I love that cinnamon was added as it goes so well with coffee. I like the moderation with which the other white floral components were used so the fragrance whispers rather than screams. I am based in Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • Cortile sounds like a perfect summer encounter in one of the Milanese courtyards over coffee, backed by the scent of jasmine and elegant guests. I’m in EU

I had the pleasure of visiting La Scala , Galleria Vittorio Emanuele , Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio , all inspirations behind Milano Fragranze perfumes.

  • Thanks for this excellent review Karl!

It’s already great to read about this house and how the fragrances represent the city of Milan and it’s amazing locations. It really makes me want to visit this city and experience it for myself!

As a fan of a strong cup of coffee in the morning, you really piqued my interested when you mentioned a whiff of ristretto mingling with cinnamon bark. To me it sounds like one of those fragrances that you want to wear as much as possible!

CaFLeureBon introduced me to Milano Fragranze and the amazing Alessandro Brun. While I haven’t tried any offerings from the Milano Fragranze, I have Russian Tea and Lost Alice from Masque Milano and with my experience with these two fragrances and the glaring reviews here on CaFlaureBon, I am quite excited to try Cortile!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I’ve been to Milano dozens of times , and I
was a bit surprising to hear there’s a fragrance inspired by the ballatois , unique idea.
For example Basilica is inspired Basilica di Sant’ Ambrogio is famous tourist attraction , one of the oldest churches in the city , but
I love strong ristretto, sandalwood, and non-dirty jasmine fragrances , but I don’t believe I’ve smelled a fragrance that has all .
    Thanks for the draw

What interests me about Karl’s review about Milano Fragranze Cortile is how this is a brand that has the same founder Alessandro Brun of Masque Milano which is another brand that I love. I have been wanting to try Milano Fragranze since their launch in 2020. Cortile sounds like a beautiful fresh floral and coffee fragrance with so many unique dimensions to the fragrance to explore such as suede leather, warm cinnamon, sweet amber, and delectable osmanthus. I would love to try this. I am from the USA.

I love reading about fragrances I know, when the reviewer opinion is different than mine.
I know all Milano Fragranze scents, and on my skin Cortile is rather linear , soapy , almost going into barbershop territory fragrance . Coffee i barely get, if any, and some dose of fruity suede leather, and sandalwood are lurking in the background, and helping the clean jasmine.
My favorite Milano Fragranze fragrance is Galleria

Never tried anything from the house, but I am quite familiar with the DNA as I wore numerous times the fragrances from Masque Milano. Thanks for the draw! Europe

  • Claumarchini says:

It is no secret that I have a “penchant” for Masque and Milano Fragranze: being from Milan myself, I was really delighted that Alessandro Brun has thought of a while line of fragrances dedicated to our beloved city! Cortile is indeed a beautiful fragrance, I can just see myself entering inside a cortile of what are called “case di ringhiera”, the old housing style of the city, and enjoy the aroma of freshly made coffee together with the flowers adoring the balconies…Indeed, on my skin the jasmin sambac comes out really strong, so it’s definitely a scent that I would wear a lot in this time of the year, waiting for the jasmine flowers to blossom in my garden (usually they between May and June), while sipping a coffee (rigorously made with my Moka machine) on my balcony! Greetings from Italy

  • Karl’s review takes me to that evening in the courtyard. I’m intrigued by the sweet coffee and floral notes. USA

Wonderful review Karl! What specifically interests me about Karl’s review is learning the fragrance was meant to embody the environment and feeling of “ballatoios,” with couples quietly enjoying a relaxing time together, romantic and comforting, while the foliage and flowers linger in the air and mingle with rich Italian roasted coffee aromas. A peaceful oasis among the busy intensity of the financial center that is Milan. As a resident of New York City, I can identify with the need to find an oasis of tranquility in the chaos of the city and this blend of fragrant, tumbling jasmine, smooth and rich coffee, and the greenery of bergamot and violet leaves sounds like the perfect escape that I can’t wait to try.
