MATIERE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait (Aurélien Guichard) 2024 + sensual woods giveaway

MATIERE PREMIERE SANTAL AUSTRAL Extrait

I was at my happy perfume place in Dublin when their delivery of the new MATIERE PREMIERE Extraits arrived and two instantly stole my heart. First up was Radical Rose Extrait, which transforms the playful, summery vibe of the EDP’s patchouli rose into a darkly devastatingly diva, finery on and dripping with elegance as immortelle brings out the darkly sweet facets of the rose as if it blooms in the night. Then Santal Austral Extrait knocked me sideways, a stunning elevation of Australian Sandalwood, making the material shine in the way perfumer Aurélien Guichard, perfumer and director of MATIERE PREMIERE does so well.

As it opens, MATIERE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait sparkles with hints of metallic greens, as its complex textures create a delightful interplay of dry, woody notes alongside a soft, powdery sensation. The introduction of Nepalese Black Cardamom Essential oil in this Extrait version, along with a generous dose of Australian sandalwood oil, allows Santal Austral Extrait to resonate more powerfully, enriching its creamy, sensual undertones.

It took me some time to move beyond my initial reaction to this new extrait, which was simply, WOW! It felt like diving into a bag of Australian sandalwood chips, enveloped in its aroma, a scent I absolutely love. This scent differs from Mysore sandalwood, which offers a richer, creamier woodiness with a touch of sour blonde woods, almost akin to the sensation of tasting bare skin. In contrast, Australian sandalwood presents a cooler experience; if Mysore is horizontal, Australian is vertical, with its sour notes taking on a refreshing uplifting green quality and a metallic sheen. It feels more fluid and milky compared to the denser Mysore. This milkiness lends Australian sandalwood a sensuous, silky texture as you wear it, accompanied by a calming aroma often associated with spiritual practices. Additionally, it features a balsamic myrrh facet that introduces a resinous sweetness, creating a deep intensity that emanates from its core. Aurélien Guichard masterfully showcases this remarkable material, enhancing its diverse characteristics and transforming it from a mere ingredient into a perfume that envelops you in a smooth, inky darkness.

The aroma of ink is another olfactive scent I love, MATIERE PRMEIERE Santal Austral Extrait has a fascinating overlap with black drawing ink, in my head a least, its that dark silky shimmering feel ink has when applied to a surface, with both ink and Santal Austral Extrait presenting with subtle smoky, dark woody notes scent wise, complemented by that slightly green, medicinal sharpness unique to Australian sandalwood. This inky essence conjures memoires of elegant traditional Japanese ink landscapes, Santal Austral Extrait holds that same captivating dark fluidity and elegance of the brush strokes that move with precision in a minimal deeply considered and thoughtful way. This connection with black ink scent likely explains why Santal Austral Extrait ranks among my top favourites in this new Extrait collection.

The Nepalese black cardamom essential oil used, crafted specifically for MATIERE PREMIERE, adds a unique touch to Santal Austral Extrait. I would love to experience it on its own to fully appreciate its character, but here it seems to enhance various aspects of the Australian sandalwood. Its cooler, aromatic greens soften the sharper edges of the sandalwood, while hints of lemony mint impart an airy, expansive quality, reminiscent of inky lines drawn on silk as it dances in a gentle breeze. The other side of the black cardamom’s coin gives us more dark facets, introducing a smoky woodiness, as if the sandalwood is gently smouldering, allowing its delicate incense-like notes to intertwine with the creamy, inky iris silk, accented by flashes of camphor that highlight the sweeter nuances.

Black Cardamom and Sandalwood

Black Cardamom essential oils from Nepal used in MATIERE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait and Australian sandalwood courtesy of the brand.

These two materials are woven beautifully together by Aurélien Guichard, giving us a bold and alluring complex sensory sensation that further develops the originals creamy almond milk and iris facets, adding new depth, allowing that inky darkness to make the brightness and soft sensuality glow. More of the original’s dry resins and ambery facets reveal themselves later in the dry down, as the sandalwood and cardamom subtly smooth into a soft silky milky woody dream. Powerful woody amber materials are cleverly cloaked in the cardamom and sandalwood, smoothing out their more tenacious facets and giving that signature MATIERE PREMIERE seemingly endless feel, I still have no idea how this magic is a achieved in the citrus fresh Neroli Oranger, which seemingly defies the laws of physics. Benzoin gently softens the edges with its warm, fuzzy texture, creating a dreamy haze that draws your focus back to the heart of the Australian sandalwood and black cardamom. The tonka bean enriches the woods with a creamy vanilla whisper, dry yet hinting at coumarin, guiding you back to that silky, milky iris sensation. It feels as if a gentle, warm breeze is moving this soft sensual powdery iris silk, caressing your skin gently, while softer, powdery woods emerge, still glimmering with the gentle greens of cardamom. Santal Austral Extrait slowly transitions from the inky darkness into the light of sensual white woods, leaving you in a serene meditation on sensuality, its presence lingering beautifully in the air around you.

Notes: Organic Sandalwood Essence Australia, Black Cardamom Absolute from Nepal, almond milk, Iris Absolu Toscane, Benzoin Absolu Laos, Tonka Bean Absolu Venezuela.

  • I wore a small sample of this from Nose Paris the other evening and was so impressed with it, the performance was fantastic and it played a much richer song of the original. I found the black cardamon to be just stunning.

  • I would love to win this perfume because I have often heard of Aurelien Guichard without ever having had the opportunity to try these perfumes. I love sandalwood, my favorites are: Bois des iles by Chanel, Tam Dao by Diptyque, Sacred wood by Kilian. I really like this passage: “Santal Austral Extrait slowly transitions from the inky darkness into the light of sensual white woods, leaving you in a serene meditation on sensuality, its presence lingering beautifully in the air around you.” All this reminds me of the typical elegance of a black and white Chanel suit. I live in France, EU.

  • I absolutely loved your review, J, of MATIÈRE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait! The way you describe the Australian sandalwood with its cooler, more fluid texture really intrigued me. I adore how you compared it to Mysore sandalwood and the inky, smoky depth you mentioned sounds so unique. I’m especially fascinated by the inclusion of Nepalese black cardamom — it feels like such an unexpected yet perfect contrast to the creamy sandalwood.

Also, I have to say, Radical Rose is one of my absolute favorites! The extrait you mentioned sounds like it takes the rose-patchouli mix to another level of elegance. Both of these are now on my must-try list!

  • Who doesn’t love a good sandalwood fragrance. What stood out from the review was the emphasis on the addition of Nepalese Black Cardamom Essential oil and the more potent Australian sandalwood oil giving it a milky, silky texture that combined with black cardamon makes a spicy and creamy experience–that is elevated in the Extrait version…making it a more intoxicating scent.

I smelled a few of the counterparts to the extraits or the “originals”, I seemingly remember them being very powerful already so I can only imagine the longevity/spillage of the extraits. Santal Austral (original) was one of the ones that stood out to me so this new line of Extraits is really peaking my interest to experience them. J mentioned the sandalwood oil and black cardamom absolu play an integral role in this new extract adding an even stronger creamy/spicier layer to the already powerful scent. The almond milk and benzoin also contribute to the overall comforting texture of the fragrance and I love a silky smooth fragrance on a fall/winter day. I too want to be in a serene meditational state in the woods of Australia. I’m located in the USA.

I did not tried any of extracts from MP. My favorite is beloved oud seven, and encens suave, and would die, for check those

  • J’s review of MATIÈRE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait is quite captivating! The fragrance is described as a sensual white wood with a creamy, powdery opening that includes notes of almond milk and iris. The dry down features a hint of sandalwood, tonka bean, and benzoin, creating a velvety, mysterious scent. I never tried this brand so I don’t really have a favourite. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

My favorite from the house is Parisian Musc. I love a good sandalwood and cardamom fragrance, though, and have had Santal Astral on my wishlist for a while. The added aroma of ink is very intriguing.

“Fragrances by MATIERE PREMIERE are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions.”

    I am in the USA.

  • My current favorite from this line is Parisian Musc—to me it is addictive. Re: this new release, I love cardamom and sandalwood, but was particularly interested to learn about the different kinds of sandalwood explained in the article! And black cardamom is a particular favorite of mine to use in tea blends. Reading the other article, I’m so jealous of the idea of one’s family owning tuberose fields! I loved learning about the enfluage method, “a technique which uses frames with a glass panel that is covered with vegetal wax. Flowers are carefully layered on this wax that will absorb their olfactive molecules, with layers renewed until the wax is fully ready to be distillated.”

  • This was a wonderful and well written scent journey that you took me on J! As an Australian, living currently in London, you reminded me of home and when I’d be out walking and exploring in nature and how it would remind me of the scent of the woods in your description of this fragrance! A beautiful memory. Thank you

  • J’s review of Matiere Premiere Santal Austral Extrait delves into the extrait’s transformation of Australian sandalwood, highlighting its cool, milky texture, green metallic notes, and deep, sensual aura. Enhanced by black cardamom, the fragrance reveals layers of smoky woods, creamy iris, and balsamic sweetness, creating a balanced yet intense woody profile. The extrait’s unique inky and meditative qualities evoke elegant Japanese ink landscapes. Aurélien Guichard masterfully blends sandalwood and cardamom, making this extrait a refined, complex scent experience. Also, sandalwood is my FAVORITE!!!

  • What sparked my interest in J’s review of MATIÈRE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait is the masterful way the scent’s complexity is described, particularly the interplay between the Australian sandalwood and Nepalese black cardamom. The comparison of the sandalwood’s milky fluidity and inky darkness evokes an artistic, almost meditative fragrance experience. Aurélien Guichard’s creative approach shines through, transforming raw materials into something deeply emotional, which resonates with his quote, “Raw materials are for me, as a perfumer, the colors that I use to create emotions.” His emphasis on quality and simplicity truly elevates this extrait.

I live in the EU, and while I haven’t tried Santal Austral yet, Radical Rose remains one of my favorites for its intensity and beauty.

  • I loved reading about the sandalwood. I recently got into that note and wondered why I was so late to discover it. I love that this has milkiness and that the myrrh gives a sweet resinous touch. This sounds divine. I haven’t smelled it in its original form. I do love Encens Suave and Parisian Musc!! Such a good line of fragrances. Quote: ” I memorized 2000 ingredients within 3 years. I was entirely dedicated to raw materials”. That sure shows in his work!! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • The description of the cool Australian Sandalwood and me imagining it blended with the ink note had me glued on this one. This seems to touch several fragrances I’ve loved in the past including the metallic note mentioned that was an absolute love for me. Thank you for a detailed review and I’ve not yet had the pleasure of wearing anything from Matiere Premiere. I’m in USA

  • I adore J’s distinction between Mysore and Australian Sandalwoods as it helped to really paint a vivid picture of what is offered and evoked in this extrait. I’m most intrigued by the honing in on it’s “inky” profile and how that will be received once able to experience the smell of this perfume. It’s amazing how uniquely individual everyone’s sensory vividness is.

As for Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien goes.. this was such an insightful share to read about his life and professional journey. These two quotes stood out to me in particular…
“Also, as a perfumer, I needed to do something more than just formulating. So I filed all the paperwork to acquire the official status of farmer, opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.”

“Raw materials are so complex and variable depending on the origins, the terrains, the climate, the farming, the way they are extracted…. Raw materials are for me, as a perfumer, the colors that I use to create emotions.”

    Many thanks!

What a stunning review for an exquisite perfume by Matiere Premiere. I really want to dive head first into this fragrance. Everything about it’s composition speaks to me, and I would love to wear it effortlessly. I do not yet have a favorite, but this brand is on my radar. A quote that I enjoyed from Michelyn’s interview: “The reason why I was drawn towards creating perfume was probably because I wanted to collaborate with creative people from different origins and countries.” I live in Oregon.

  • Wow, Matiere Premiere Santal Austral Extrait really took me by surprise! J’s description of how the Australian sandalwood is elevated in such a creamy, yet dark and inky way has me fascinated. The mention of the inky fluidity with hints of metallic greens, and the sensual balance of cardamom and sandalwood, makes it sound like such a unique experience. I love how J compares it to an elegant Japanese ink landscape—now I’m dying to try it!

  • From the piece with Michylyn I love when Aurenlian speaks of his childhood for example, “I am from a family of perfumers, and during my childhood, creating perfumes, growing flowers or perfume production appeared to me as part of our way of life, more than strictly a profession.” I loved J’s take on the extrait the added inky dimension seemingly adding more complexity. Really want to try this especially as the edp was my favorite, but also Encens Suave. Thanks for the generous draw from CT USA.

  • I was immediately captivated by J’s review of MATIÈRE PREMIÈRE Santal Austral Extrait. The way J described the rich, creamy notes of sandalwood and the balance with velvety iris and benzoin resin was simply alluring. I’m always on the lookout for unique and high-quality scents that stand out from the crowd, and J’s detailed review painted a vivid picture of a luxurious, complex fragrance that I absolutely must experience for myself.
The emphasis on sustainably sourced ingredients also aligns with my values, making this perfume not just a treat for the senses but also a conscious choice. J’s passion for the scent was palpable and truly infectious, sparking my curiosity and desire to add this extraordinary fragrance to my collection. Thank you MATIÈRE PREMIÈRE for this exciting giveaway opportunity!

The first part of the description made me think of a creamy, balmy, deep, warm, powerful woody fragrance but then arrived that soft, silky and light breeze of iris and that mix of black cardamom, Tonka bean, benzoin. Beautiful! I haven’t a favorite MATIÈRE PREMIERE perfume yet.

  • I was truly enchanted by J’s review of MATIÈRE PREMIÈRE Santal Austral Extrait. J’s description of the fragrance’s deep and creamy sandalwood, complemented by notes of iris and benzoin, was nothing short of mesmerizing.
The review painted a picture of a scent that’s both rich and sophisticated, with an ethical commitment to sustainable ingredients that really resonates with me. J’s enthusiasm for this perfume was infectious and has sparked my intense interest in experiencing Santal Austral Extrait for myself.
I appreciate the chance to win this exceptional fragrance, thanks to MATIÈRE PREMIÈRE and their generous giveaway.

  • This perfume is pure poetry.
I love sandalwood and cardamom, wearing it is definitely a unique, sensual and calming experience and in its wonderful evolution, it conquers and never abandons you. I don’t own any perfume from this brand but I often read positive reviews of the creator of these fragrances. This is a beautiful article, it goes straight to the heart for those who love the world of perfumes. Thank you

This perfume sounds amazing! I love sandalwood and would love to win this.

I was quite struck from the previous interview by the quote below:
“So I filed all the paperwork to acquire the official status of farmer, opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.”

I think it’s really impressive he is farming his own materials. That’s true creative control

  • As I read j review of Santal Austral Extrait, I thought, “I want to dive into sandalwood chips too!”. I think he did great job of capturing the immersive nature of the fragrance. Additionally, he sold me on the scent of Ink, which never really called to me before.

It is clear that Michelyn spent time with Aurélien Guichard when we view her review through the lens of this quote from the interview, “Fragrances by MATIERE PREMIERE are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions.”

This quote also captures the essence of Matière Premiere’s creative core. It, also, makes me a fan of the house and a hopeful entrant in this give away.

  • My interest was sparked reading about the Aussie sandalwood and it’s comparison to Mysore. I don’t have a favourite from the brand. US

  • I love this review so much. This just sounds right up my alley. I love woody scents and especially Santal. Love to be sliding into a soft silky milky woody dream. Who wouldn’t? If you look at Aurelien Guichard’s incredible portfolio I would like to know how he feels about this new creation and how he would rank it himself. As he said in his interview with Michelyn: I did not want to create a brand per se, but a “Maison de Parfumeur” – a house led by a Perfumer, whose mission is to push the limits in terms of olfactive quality and know-how. Did he push the limits with this one? From reading this wonderful review i certainly feel he did, but would love to try it myself of course!

  • This Fragrance right here seems so deep an alluring at the same time. While the description of the sandalwood in this particular one seems to die for due to it being so well rounded! This Fragrance suits perfectly in the direction My collection has been heading lately and the house of Matiere Premier has been dropping some heavy hitters. My favorites are vanilla powder and French flower. USA !

  • J’s text, more than a review, is more like an ode to Santal Austral! It’s exciting to read how excited HE is about the fragrance.
What I found most interesting was the in-depth “comparison” (in lack of a better word) between Mysore and Australian sandalwood. I had never thought of the two in such a way, and never really smelled it either, but J really threw a great piece of knowledge out there in that paragraph, to keep the nose open for next time when I smell sandalwood or a sandalwood fragrance.
I just adored how Santal Austral almost displayed itself with a “textile” quality to me, due to J describing it as inky dark, rarefying then into a silky, breezy, soft quality. It almost seems like the fragrance opens “upside down” in that sense.
Would love to win this, from the EU.
    Thanks!

  • A really informative review J!I was unaware there was such a difference among sandalwood extracts. The Australian variety seems to encompass a greener, cooler and more metallic feel. The comparison with black ink is especially striking. The almond milk, black cardamom and iris notes add to the complexity.

From Michelyn’s interview: “ Together, we thought there was something absolutely beautiful about the simplicity of a raw material. When I smell an ingredient from my perfume organ, I already see beauty and, in many cases, unique textures and technical olfactive qualities. Often, as fragrances are complex and made with many ingredients, the quality of a single ingredient is not perceivable by the person who wears the fragrance.”

    I’m in MD, USA.

  • I love all the notes listed, especially the cardamom. I liked that it smells like a “rose as if it blooms in the night.” Thanks for another awesome review and draw. MI USA

  • I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz surrounding these new extraits and I must say, they do sound quite intriguing. What draws me in most from J’s review is the black cardamom. As a huge fan of the lesser-used black variety of the spice, I’m excited to see how its unique aroma enhances both the inky tones and the sandalwood. Thus far, my favorite from the brand is Encens Suave. While I do think it is beautiful, it is also the only one I have tried from the house, so it wins by default. lol. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • I love sandalwood, through every variation of it that I have tried it remains thoroughly alluring. This extrait sounds beautiful and the addition of Nepalese Black Cardamom sounds exquisite. Like J, I too would LOVE to smell this extract on its own. I was just reading about black Cardamom in Nez magazine and now I am just fascinated and dream to one day experience it. A smoky Cardamom Sandalwood feels perfect to get us through this cold upcoming winter! ☺️ As always, thank you for the excellent review and the generous draw. I live in the USA.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

What sparked my interest was the mention of balsamic myrrh, a resinous sweetness. This sounds amazing. I wasn’t to sure about ink component of this fragrance but being that it’s an extrait it may be more smoky than inky. I’m definitely curious.

I need to revisit a few samples I have from Matière Premiere but this seems just right for this season.

  • Oh you had me at sandalwood. And I’ve never thought of Australian as milky or vertical! It makes sense – the vertical absolutely and the less dense, but I think of it as more drier than Mysore. Less spiced and more bright. Almost a cedaey sandalwood. I love all sandalwood so I’m very keen to try this. Then you mention ink and I immediately harken back to sumi-e and creating ink with water, stone and a black ink rock. That smell!!! But where you fully got my heart is the specialty black cardamon! Just take my money !!
Well hopefully I win the generous giveaway. I am in California. My fav from the house so far is Parisian Musc.

  • I have never tried anything from this house so I have no idea how and where the Extrait stands in relation to the original one – Santal Austral – but what I do know is that I love sandalwood since I first tried Samsara and used to wear it, even if I am a man, so I get very excited when there is a new perfume to test that has sandalwood as the main focus. I do love the enthusiasm you have from the experience of testing the Extrait and I must say that is contagious. A creamy and sensual mix of sandalwood together with the Nepalese Black cardamom oil does sound like a match made in heaven. Thanks for the review and for the great chance of being able to win such a prize! Reader from EU

Now due to the beautiful written review of the extrait I was fascinated by this composition cause it seems to be a vibrant evolution between sensuality and mysticism, very alluring and magnetic too. I loved how the notes of sandalwood, cardamom and ink are given a more complex dark creamy sensation to this scent. I think it is a glorious fragrance!

    Hi there,

I’m curious about Australian sandalwood and the differences it has with Mysore sandalwood, which is a favorite of mine. Also wondering how frequently cardamom is a featured note in fragrance. This one sounds beautiful; hits in all the right places! Thanks so much for your insight. I am in NYC/USA; I don’t have any familiarity with MATIERE PREMIERE, so thanks for the introduction.

  • Aurélien Guichard really has created fantastic extraits. Like J radical rose is my favorite of those I tried. The cardamom truly seems like it adds an extra dimension.
J reference to the inky essence has me intrigued. From Michelyn’s interview
“ I did not want to create a brand per se, but a “Maison de Parfumeur” – a house led by a Perfumer, whose mission is to push the limits in terms of olfactive quality and know-how. A house which places fragrance quality at the very center of each single step and consideration. A house which embodies that French Perfumery is all about extreme olfactive modernity and quality, far from the old-fashioned craft as some may see it.” I am in the EU

  • I love sandalwood and i love Matiere Premiere even more. My favorite from the house is Radical Rose.

What really sparked my interest in J’s review is the fact that he finds it “simply WOW, like diving into a bag of Australian sandalwood chips, enveloped in its aroma, a scent he absolutely loves as much as I do!

Also, I like how it feels as if a gentle, warm breeze is moving this soft sensual powdery iris silk, caressing your skin gently, while softer, powdery woods emerge, still glimmering with the gentle greens of cardamom.

    Hugs from EU.

  • The special cardamom oil has me very intrigued me. Cardamom and sandal wood are come of my favorite fragrance notes. I would love to smell this extract version. I love so many Matiere Premier scents including Vanilla Powder and Neroli Oranger. Utah, USA

  • Thanks for the giveaway! I loved this section of the previous interview:

“I felt the fragrance was not good enough. I called my partners and told them I had to start all over again! I worked night and day during 6 months, including during the month of May, the month of the Rose Centifolia harvest, weighing and compounding every try myself.”

I think that with that sort of passion, the end result is just always going to be good. Many people wouldn’t have it in them to call off a fragrance entirely after it’s already gone to press and start all over again, so the fact that Aurelien did, and worked so hard on it, says a lot about where his priorities for his brand lie; namely, making fragrances he is truly proud of, rather than just making what will sell.

This Extrait definitely sounds interesting, I was a big fan of the original so it’ll be cool to see what spin he has put on it with the new added ingredients.

I didn’t know if “EU” here strictly refers to just the ‘European Union’ or the broader ‘Europe’, but I thought I’d throw in my entry just in case it’s the latter (since Matiere Premiere usually ship to the UK, where I’m based). Sorry in advance if this isn’t the case.

  • I haven’t tried any MATIERE PREMIERE fragrances yet, but I’ve heard Radical Rose highly recommended. This is the first I’ve read about Santal Austral, which sounds like a focused and beautiful take on sandalwood. Excellent, detailed review—I appreciated J’s comparison of Australian and Mysore sandalwood (the latter of which I’m more familiar) and the reference to the dark, woody, medicinal smell of drawing ink. The “metallic greens” in the opening of Santal Austral Extrait are a surprise, though the cardamom seems like a natural pairing; interesting how it enhances various aspects of the sandalwood material. I’d love to try this.

Reading Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien Guichard, his story about starting a organic farm is memorable: “It all began when, in 2015, I decided to plant Rose Centifolia on our family domain in the Grasse region. My grand-parents were approaching the end of their life, they had quit farming a few years back. They had taught me so much in my childhood, I wanted to perpetuate this local and family know-how. Also, as a perfumer, I needed to do something more than just formulating. So I filed all the paperwork to acquire the official status of farmer, opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.”

    I’m in the USA.

  • The description makes it feel like wearing a fluffy, cozy sweater in front of a fire. So ready for autumn, and this beauty has AUTUMN written all over it. Bring on the inky nights, this would be my first Matière Premiere. I’m in the USA, thanks for the generous drawing.

  • Oh my gosh, sandalwood, cardamom, orange blossom, this must be a fantastic scent with all my fav notes. Comparing sandalwood notes, horizontal vs vertical, this is the first time I’ve read that, and now I’m really intrigued. Let’s not forget the dark, cool, inky note as well. I would love to try this scent from Matiere Premiere, I do not have a favorite, but I’m sure this one would be IT. Thank you for the wonderful review and the sample
    I’m in the US.

  • Really enjoyed reading J’s review.
This is my favorite part that got me interested in Santal Austral Extrait: “Aurélien Guichard masterfully showcases Australian sandalwood – this remarkable material, enhancing its diverse characteristics and transforming it from a mere ingredient into a perfume that envelops you in a smooth, inky darkness. Along with cardamom, these two materials are woven beautifully together as they subtly smooth into a soft silky milky woody dream.”
Some of my favorites from Matiere Premiere are Neroli Oranger and Vanilla Powder.

  • The way J described the Australian sandalwood with its cooler, more fluid texture really caught my attention. really really enjoyed J’s review. Huge fan of matiere premiere as well! Located in Austin Tx

  • I am intrigued by the comparison to Ink. I don’t think I would have picked that up just from the notes alone. I haven’t been able to try any from the brand but am interested. I think for me just the blend of sandlewood and cardom9k sound great. I live in the US

  • “….smoothing out their more tenacious facets and giving that signature MATIERE PREMIERE seemingly endless feel, I still have no idea how this magic is a achieved in the citrus fresh Neroli Oranger, which seemingly defies the laws of physics”

Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger is zesty and luminous , full of energy fragrance, also made by the talented Aurelien Guichard , I was gifted a mini , I believe it’s 8ml . Compared to Neroli Oranger, Santal Austral Extrait is way more complex, way deeper, I like sandalwood and cardamom sophisticated fragrances with a lot of depth , and ambery drydown.
I especially enjoyed the parallel J Wearescentient made between the Australian and Mysore sandalwood, very informative

I read again the interview with Aurelien Guichard , and my quote is :
“Two things still strike me today as important takeaways from this period. First, the creative conviction and courage it took, for established brands and marketing directors to let a young trainee perfumer create his first perfumes alone, under no Master Perfumer’s guidance and supervision. This is rare.”

Exceptional work ethic by the rather young perfumer . Creating almost everything , from creation of the scent, to all that comes after, even harvesting some of Matiere Premiere ingredients on his own .
    Thanks the draw

  • I have been interested in this scent since I first saw it announced. That Australian sandalwood and black cardamom combo has me excited for sure. Now I did see J mention an inky note to it and I am intrigued to see how that adds to it.

Guichard mentioned in his interview with Michelyn “Radical Rose and French Flower by MATIERE PREMIERE are very special to me, because they are made with my own organic Centifolia Roses and Tuberoses.” and you can tell he puts that energy into every scent he makes for the house. Crystal Saffron has been my favorite so far.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved J’s review of MATIÈRE PREMIERE Santal Austral Extrait. Being a huge fan of Matiere Premiere and the original Santal Austral and the note of Sandalwood in general I was very excited to hear about the Extait. I love how J describes the extrait as having the milky and fluid quality of Austrailian Sandalwood as well as a rich Black Cardamom sound truly divine. Aurélien Guichard is a brilliant perfumer, so I am very excited to try this. My favorite fragrance from Matiere Premiere is Encens Suave. I am from the USA.
