MATIERE PREMIERE Radical Rose Extrait Review (Aurélien Guichard) 2024 +Rose Seduction Giveaway

MATIERE PREMIERE Radical Rose Extrait

Radical Rose Extrait instantly stole my heart when I first smelled it, I’d already fallen for the fun-loving patchouli rose EDP but the extrait elevates the experience even further for me. Immortelle is one of my favourite materials and flowers, in perfumes its essence is deeply complex nearly being a perfume in it own right with deep dark hues that range from a burnt candy sweetness to purring bodily musky spices meeting a darker honeyed balsamic heart. Aurélien Guichard, the perfumer and founder of MATIERE PREMIERE, skillfully harnesses this exquisite material; drawing out its deeper, darker facts alongside his own highly dosed roses, grown in his hometown flower farm in Grasse.

A sultry fleshy pink rose blossoms on your skin, it’s fresh with deep pink peppery spices leaping forward as cool dew drips from the rose petals, giving you this cool yet spiced warmth brimming with a delicious jammy rose sweetness. Saffron turns this into a soft shimmering steam as a soft honeyed overtones wink at you, flashing a glimpse of the delights beneath Radical Rose Extrait’s petals. This stunning rose scent of pushed to limits here using MATIERE PREMIERE own organically grown roses. It’s feels so full and huge letting saffron turn its petals into sultry sensual silks feeling like a stunning pink rose has wrapped itself around your skin. Subtle herbal green flickers at the edges with patchouli’s earthy richness hinting at Radical Rose Extrait’s darker desires.

Immortelle in perfumery

J’s Photo of immortelle

You can slowly feel the rose getting richer and deeper as more warm spices join the jammy sweetness with subtle balsamic resins making the sweet juices sticky, luscious and enticing. The pink feeling fades as the petals unfurl further, revealing darker reds and crimsons. Saffron makes its spices glisten with gentle mineralic flashes, giving them an erotic bite as its thorns gently tease you. The playful side of Radical Rose EDP fades here, as a darker deeper rose takes you by the hand and leads you into the night. Radical Rose Extrait turns up the seductive sexiness levels as immortelle drips deep honeyed tones over the petals. The jammines of the rose starts to have a figgy facet, with a beautiful abstract floral yellow glow radiating from the rose. Here is where the extrait departs from the EDP; Aurélien Guichard has used Croatian immortelle absolute in a very high dose with his Rose Centifolia Absolute to take Radical Rose Extrait to the next level of opulence. Immortelle is a super complex material and here its darker sweet facets give depth to the rose while working with saffron’s suede/leather facets to give than a purring raw edge that give you a wink of carnal desire. Soft skin like musks hum with subtle savory salts and spices, as things get steamy.

The Extrait’s dry down darkens the rose even more, saffron keeps the petals feeling luminous and silky with subtle rougher velvet textures added from pepper and immortelles complex spices. Saffron lifts the composition too with its shimmering metallic mineralic facets making the dark rose unfurl revealing its sultrier slightly animalic heart. Immortelle whispers of bodily spices as you get intimate with Radical Rose Extrait, its darker liquorice facets seep into labdanum’s resins as a soft smokiness wrap around the rose giving its this sensual mysterious allure. Immortelle brings this darkness out revealing the inner desires of Radical Rose out in this extrait iteration. The playful airy patchouli rose is ready for the night and has pleasure on its mind.

You still get flashes of its jammy sweetness; though with the immortelle it’s a darker more burnt sugar and deep Manuka honey facets adding a richness. The woody undertones from patchouli and labdanum’s resins giving a chiaroscuro effect with the counterpoint of vanilla and sweet musks bringing the light to Radical Rose Extrait.  With the saffron this makes Radical Rose Extrait a very opulent wear, it turns the fun loving EDP into a devastatingly sultry rose, one that will break your heart and enjoy doing it. Saffron whispers of leather mixed in with the softer sweet rose kisses all while it envelops you in its opulent wake. This is a black rose engulfed in dark rich pleasure, glowing with immortelle and bodily musky desire. It’s a rose to fall for, a heartbreaker that has you yearning for more… To quote PJ Harvey, ‘This is love, this is love, that I’m feelin’.

  • Thank you for this lovely review! Matière Première always captures such depth and artistry in their fragrances, and Radical Rose Extrait sounds like a masterpiece. The idea of a more intense and seductive rose, crafted by Aurélien Guichard, is truly enticing. I’d love to experience the duality of its richness and freshness myself. Fingers crossed for this giveaway! Thank you for the opportunity! I live in Romania, Europe.

  • I love how all the facets of an already masterfully crafted scent are deepened and enriched in the extrait version according to J’s voluptuous description. Like taking the finest of everything and leveling up to the point of decadent excess.

As the saying goes: A rose is a rose is a rose…

Well, not this one. The original is a huge love of mine, it would be a dream come true to sniff this from Maître Guichard.

Thanks for the draw. Based in the EU

  • In J’s review: First off, to already love the original, but prefer the new extrait version is high praise for newest incarnation. And the focus on the Immortelle note, with its deeper nuances that run the gambit from sweet to a musky-spiciness paired with fragrant roses from Grasse, that go darker in the dry down–combined with the other highlight notes of saffron, herbaceous notes and labdanum create a luxurious, overall wear that is more of a dark, sultry vixen of a scent: “This is a black rose engulfed in dark rich pleasure”.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Matiere Premiere is one of the best niche houses. If you were to ask me, they were strong enough (the originals) so when I saw that extra it’s were coming out I was scared. However, reading more that there is something a little different indeed and not just the higher concentration of the oils, it makes the new collection very enticing. Radical Rose, although it has a simple note breakdown, it’s exactly what the name implies: a rose fragrance like no other. The rose note is vibrant, front and center with the rest of the notes playing in the background. The immortelle addition along with the amped up saffron, it’s a match made in heaven. Saffron goes so well with rose and the addition of the patchouli only adds to the longevity of the scent. A radical name for a radical rose scent! I’m located in the USA.

  • First off, I had never heard of this perfume house before. This article is a wonderful overview of the fragrance. While I love all rose scents, my favorite is the jammy, rich, full bodied kind. Radical Rose Extrait sounds incredible and exactly in my wheelhouse. My favorite quote from your description is “With the saffron this makes Radical Rose Extrait a very opulent wear, it turns the fun loving EDP into a devastatingly sultry rose, one that will break your heart and enjoy doing it.”

    I live in the USA.

  • I didn’t always like rose; when I was younger I felt that it was kind of an old-fashioned scent. In recent years though, I’ve been really enjoying the discovery (or rather, re-discovery) of the note – it has so many different facets that I’m convinced my nose just wasn’t mature enough to appreciate it back then. That said, the name of this fragrance alone intrigues me, and this review has me doubly interested – I love a jammy rose, but add a dark immortelle and a rich honey? Sign me up.

I’ve come to realize the truth in Aurélien Guichard’s words:
“Not everyone can relate to a fragrance. However, when it comes to raw materials, anyone can appreciate the beauty of a citron, a sandalwood, a rose or a tuberose.”

  • J’s review of MATIERE PREMIERE Radical Rose Extrait grabbed my attention with its vivid, almost cinematic storytelling. The way he described the evolution of the rose—starting as a playful, fresh bloom and deepening into a dark, seductive heart—is nothing short of mesmerizing. The imagery of saffron turning the petals into “sultry sensual silks” and immortelle dripping honeyed tones over the composition makes this fragrance sound like an experience rather than just a scent.

I also love how he captures the interplay between light and dark—jammy sweetness balanced with spicy, resinous undertones—and the use of phrases like “erotic bite” and “pleasure on its mind” makes it impossible not to be intrigued. Plus, the idea of the rose going from “fun-loving” in the EDP to “devastatingly sultry” in the extrait is fascinating. If a perfume can embody that much complexity and emotion, I need to try it!

  • I own the original Radical Rose and was on the fence about buying the extrait. Until I read Wearescentient review. “Radical Rose Extrait turns up the seductive sexiness levels as immortelle drips deep honeyed tones over the petals.” I love immortelle as well (looking at you Ganymede).
The Quote I loved was when he spoke about his training on his own, “Two things still strike me today as important takeaways from this period. First, the creative conviction and courage it took, for established brands and marketing directors to let a young trainee perfumer create his first perfumes alone, under no Master Perfumer’s guidance and supervision. This is rare.” My favorite from the brand Matiere Premiere is Parisian Musc.

  • The original Radical Rose was one of the most beautiful perfumes I’ve gotten my nose on. A similar DNA to profiles I love such as Portrait of a Lady and Eau Capitale, but with a deeper depth that I found to be more elegant with its dry down. I would love to see the direction the extrait goes with its saffron. Sounds so gorgeous!

  • Is this rose suitable for a man?
I love Amouage’s Epic 56 composed by Cécile Zarokian but I’m not a fan of Rose de mai by JC Ellena for Perris Monte Carlo. What tempts me in J Wearescentient’s description is the addition of immortelle, I’m a fan of Sables by Annick Goutal for her incredible use of immortelle. “Aurélien Guichard has used Croatian immortelle absolute in a very high dose with his Rose Centifolia Absolute to take Radical Rose Extrait to the next level of opulence.” is my favorite part of this extract. I’ve tried Encens suave before and was very impressed by Aurelien’s work.
    I live in France, EU.

  • Absolutely divine review. I love rose fragrances in the winter months. This sounds especially interesting and sexy. So much to like and enjoy wearing. Would love to try this. Thank you! I’m in US.

  • PerfumesforLife says:

As a fan of rose, I am extremely interested in all new rose creations especially one by Matiere. Rose is a tricky note. The original was beautiful but I feel based on J’s review that this one is even better. Saffron with Rose to darken it with pepper and labdanum; with Jammy rose coming through with sweetness yes darkness. I am in love.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

This is love…this is love that I should be wearing 🙂
I’m already of fan of Radical Rose. This extrait flanker sounds so wonderful. I’m interested in experiencing all facets of this creation. However, it is the drydown that seems to have captured my attention with the burnt sugar and Manuka honey facets. I can’t wait to get my nose on this one.

  • This is a house that I have yet to dive into, but I have certainly been hearing a good deal of buzz about them lately, especially since these extraits dropped. Radical Rose Extrait sounds quite sultry. I really like the idea of the licorice and smoky facets that J talked about. I love rose anyway, but when it’s taken into a dark direction, that’s what really tantalizes me. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • J’s review completely captivated me with its rich, evocative language and deep dive into the nuances of Radical Rose Extrait. The way he described the transformation of the rose—from dewy and playful to dark, sultry, and dripping with immortelle’s honeyed, spicy warmth—was so vivid, I could practically smell it. I love how he brought the saffron and immortelle to life, making them feel like characters in the story, each adding texture and depth to the rose’s evolution.

The contrast he paints between the extrait and the EDP really stood out to me, especially the idea of the extrait being darker, more seductive, and unapologetically sensual. The description of saffron as “shimmering metallic” and immortelle as having “burnt sugar and bodily musky spices” made this fragrance sound like a complex, emotional journey. Now I can’t stop thinking about how it must feel to wear something so bold and transformative!

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Radical Rose Extrait must be the “rose de la rose’ in perfumery – the carefully grown main ingredient and the expert hand of Aurélien Guichard can’t produce anything less but a masterpiece.
J’s love for immortele’s scent made me extra curious – I think I’ve seen the little yellow buds, but never smelled them – ✔️ on the to do list is now a must.
    I’m in EU.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

Without having smelled this extrait version, I love how the inclusion of immortelle brings this rose to life. The saffron and vanilla adding some spicy sweetness, I think I could fall in love with this fragrance. Encens Suave is my current favorite from the brand, but I can’t wait to smell this one. A quote from Aurelien in Michelyn’s interview that i found intriguing is: The reason why I was drawn towards creating perfume was probably because I wanted to collaborate with creative people from different origins and countries.
    I live in Oregon.

  • Danu Erce Seith-Fyr says:

I am, I have to admit a Radical Rose Devotee in extremis. Body Lotion, EDP, now this sultry beauty comes knocking at my door. The notes list has me purring before I have even finished reading, I think I shall have to do a ‘Cleopatra’ and just bathe in the stuff. This combination of Immortelle, yes one of my favourites also with that lush, voluptuous rose, well one’s mind runs itself ragged with imaginings. Thank you J, for such temptation. I live in SW France.

  • That’s a wonderful review and I agree about Immortelle. This really sounds alluring and addictive. I love that the rose used is the one grown by the house. It’s just amazing to have that all natural and deeply curated and loved Ingredient -to be able to harvest at the just the right moment for the perfume! I’m thankful for the giveaway.
    U.S.

  • Love how Radical Rose Extrait instantly stole J’s heart when he first smelled it, I’m sure I’d feel the same, especially with a description like this: “A sultry fleshy pink rose blossoms on your skin, it’s fresh with deep pink peppery spices leaping forward as cool dew drips from the rose petals, giving you this cool yet spiced warmth brimming with a delicious jammy rose sweetness. It’s a rose to fall for, a heartbreaker that has you yearning for more… ”

This review makes this perfume sound very interesting and enticing. Love how it’s described as a black rose. I love reading michelyns interview and hearing that the creator is inspired by nature.
“ I was certainly influenced by this environment.”. Our context influences us greatly. I’d love to win and live in Indiana.

  • (Colorado, USA) I have tried the original Radical Rose and fell in love with it. I wore my 5 ml sample abroad last year and every time I wear it the memories of that trip come rushing back. I haven’t yet smelled the extrait, but the deep, dark aspect and the heavy dose of immortelle piques my interest!

  • Radical Rose Extrait is so beautiful that it takes your breath away, sensual and opulent, this is how it is described, it is a “PRIMA DONNA” rose, it is the absolute protagonist that has no rivals. I have nothing of this brand.
    Linda (EU)

  • J’s review of Radical Rose completely drew me in with its vivid descriptions and sensory detail. The way they describe the transformation of the rose—from fresh and pink to dark, seductive, and honeyed—is mesmerizing. I love how the immortelle adds a unique burnt-sugar richness, and the mix of saffron, patchouli, and musks sounds like pure opulence. It’s like the fragrance tells a story, and now I’m dying to experience this “heartbreaker” rose myself!

  • Oh, Radical Rose… A perfume I’ve been dying to try ever since it came out…
What I like in J’s review is the game between rose and saffron -how saffron turns this sultry fleshy pink rose blossoms, fresh with deep pink peppery spices, into a soft shimmering steam as a soft honeyed overtones wink at you, flashing a glimpse of the delights beneath Radical Rose Extrait’s petals.
I also like that Aurélien Guichard has used Croatian immortelle absolute, that’s my country, in a very high dose taking Radical Rose Extrait to the next level of opulence.
My favorite from the brand is Vanilla powder.

  • Thank you for the review. I am not familiar with this house but am now intrigued based on J’s description. Rose scents have always been my favorite but I don’t think I’ve experienced anything like this “black rose” with it’s dark burnt sugar, honey, labdanum, and immortelle. I’m in love!

  • Chilly weather greetings from England, UK. This perfume would be ideal for cheering one up on a cold day. I loved the intricate descriptions as if reading a story that was easy to imagine and to picture wearing this perfume with the feelings it will invoke from the notes. I’d love to own a perfume with Immortelle weaved in with the Rose centifola and saffron. I’m fairly new to the awe inspiring world of perfumes and feel able to fully appreciate the work that goes in to them and the magic they create for the wearer and those around.

  • Love Manuka honey and PJ Harvey so would be interested in any perfume that conjures both. But I have to confess I have a sample of this one so I already know I would love a full bottle. I’m in the US.

  • This sounds like a elevated rose fragrance. Seems like the original would be great for day and the extrait for night. I’d love to test them side by side. I sadly have not smelled the original or any from the new extrait collection. That saffron must give it that lift. My favorite from the originals are Crystal Saffron (on my buy list) and Ensens Suave. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Radical Rose Extrait by Aurélien Guichard. This fragrance has been getting a lot of attention for its unique composition and the way it enhances the original Radical Rose with a higher concentration and the addition of everlasting flower (immortelle) to create a sweeter and brighter scent, and that really sparked my interes, I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Your review perfectly conveys the depth and allure of this extrait, especially the interplay between rose and immortelle. I haven’t tried Matière Première yet, but this fragrance sounds captivating—fingers crossed for the giveaway!

  • J’s effusive praise for Matiere Premiere’s Radica Rose Extrait has me excited to try it. It seems the extrait version is more intense and seductive than the original with Centifolia rose absolute grown and distilled in Grasse and a heavy dose of immortelle. The immortelle sounds like it’s bringing out the darkness and sultriness to the extrait composition. MD, USA.

  • This review really makes Radical Rose Extrait sound like an experience—like the EDP grew up, got a little rebellious, and decided to embrace its darker side. I love how it’s described as starting off bright and jammy, but then layers of immortelle, saffron, and patchouli give it this sultry, seductive depth. The imagery of a rose wrapped in velvet and honeyed spices is so vivid—it’s definitely making me want to try this and see how it transforms on my skin!

  • This write-up makes Radical Rose Extrait sound absolutely mesmerizing. The idea of a rose starting off bright and playful but deepening into something darker and more sensual is so intriguing. I love how immortelle and saffron are highlighted—they’re such unique notes to pair with a rose, adding a smoky, honeyed richness. It seems like a perfume that really evolves as you wear it, and I’m so curious to experience that transformation for myself. Definitely adding this to my must-try list!

  • I was really drawn to J’s review of Radical Rose Extrait because of how it describes the rose evolving from fresh and playful to deeper, more sensual notes. The way immortelle and saffron add complexity and warmth makes this extrait sound so luxurious. I also loved what Aurélien Guichard said in his interview about creating perfumes that are like “an olfactory portrait of yourself”—it really feels like Radical Rose Extrait would be an intimate, personal experience. I live in Austin, Tx. I haven’t tried Radical Rose Extrait yet (i’ve been dying to) but it sounds heavenly. Vanilla Powder definitely is my favorite from the brand. Loving the Matière Première Content!

Radical Rose Extract sounds like a seductive and sultry rose, with so many rich and deep facets. I am impressed that the roses in the perfume come from MATIERE PREMIERE’s own organic farm. The saffron and immortelle certainly add opulence to this fragrance. I truly would like to wear a carnal fragrance like this.
    I live in the USA.

  • A friend recently recommended Radical Rose, so J isn’t the only one instantly smitten with this fragrance. While the jammy rose here sounds almost hyperreal in its potency, I’m particularly intrigued by the use of immortelle, dosed aggressively to give the rose and saffron some honeyed snarl. Radical Rose Extrait sounds like sexy stuff.

I haven’t tried any MATIERE PREMIERE fragrances, yet, but Radical Rose would be at the top of my list. Reading Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien Guichard, this line stood out: “It all began when, in 2015, I decided to plant Rose Centifolia on our family domain in the Grasse region. My grand-parents were approaching the end of their life, they had quit farming a few years back. They had taught me so much in my childhood, I wanted to perpetuate this local and family know-how. Also, as a perfumer, I needed to do something more than just formulating. So I filed all the paperwork to acquire the official status of farmer, opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.” Radical Rose Extrait brings that idea full circle.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Radical rose extrait seems really seductive! Spiced rose blooms with saffron’s silky warmth, I already loved it while reading the review.

  • “Radical Rose and French Flower by MATIERE PREMIERE are very special to me, because they are made with my own organic Centifolia Roses and Tuberoses” told Aurélien Guichard in the interview. The use he makes of his own raw materials is fascinating, I hope I manage to visit his flower field in Grasse.
J’s review goes deep in the shades of each ingredient and made me very curious about Immortelle. Sweet, dark, sharp and sensual, I think this perfume is very graceful and complete.
    I live in Italy

  • I didn’t always appreciate rose as a male fragrance note. But in recent years, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed rediscovering its many facets, especially if mixed with Oud and Musk. Looking back, I realize my nose simply wasn’t mature enough to appreciate its complexity then. The name of this fragrance alone has piqued my curiosity, and the review has only heightened my interest. A jammy rose paired with dark immortelle and rich honey? That’s an irresistible combination—count me in! Aurélien Guichard’s words resonate deeply with me: “Not everyone can relate to a fragrance. However, when it comes to raw materials, anyone can appreciate the beauty of a citron, a sandalwood, a rose, or a tuberose.” Regards from NY!

Thanks for the nice writeup J. MAtiere Premiere fragrances are always interesting to read about because they take a high quality oil/note and then play around with its facets in so many interesting ways. I really like the use of immortelle, pepper and labdanum to push the desire that has been associated with rose since antiquity.

I have not had a chance to try this brand.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • This sounds just amazing. A rose centric blend of superb quality and a heavy composition that has an opulence and richness that simply can’t be beat. I love alot of rose & oud combos but this here i imagine has a velvety soft smell and is a pleasurable, easy choice for those who want to impress those around them. Hope to win from Jacksonville, NC
