Matière Premiere Radical Rose Review (Aurelien Guichard) 2022 + A Bold Giveaway

Radical Rose by MATIERE PREMIERE

Matière Premiere Radical Rose by Olya Bar©

Once considered old-fashioned, roses have experienced a remarkable renaissance, shedding their dated image. Today, roses are celebrated in the perfume world and loved by consumers of all ages for their versatility, presenting lush, gourmand, mineral, metallic, and even cosmic interpretations. This newfound appreciation and often even borderline obsession of the brands with it has revealed roses to be multifaceted, gender-neutral, and highly addictive, especially when a brand like Matière Premiere takes on a project.

Since its launch, Matière Premiere, which translates to “top-quality ingredient,” has established itself as a key player in the niche fragrance sector. The brand’s commitment to quality is evident in its meticulously crafted perfumes, all under the expert guidance of master perfumer Aurelien Guichard, whose extensive and successful olfactive portfolio speaks for itself.

Matière Premiere Radical Rose is a fragrance that embodies the brand’s innovative spirit. The original concept behind Radical Rose was to create “An Overdose of Rose Absolute,” using Rose Centifolia Absolute from roses organically grown in their fields. The goal was to achieve the highest concentration of Rose Centifolia Absolute worldwide. This fragrance accentuates the bright, spicy facets of the rose with a burnished saffron and pepper berries essence from Jamaica while highlighting its dark, woody facets with patchouli essence from Indonesia and labdanum absolute from Andalusia.

Rose Centifolia

The challenge was to make Radical Rose stand out amidst hundreds of other rose-centric fragrances on the market. Aurelien Guichard executed this flawlessly, resulting in a fragrance that commands attention. Radical Rose is bold and unapologetic, with a solid backbone that showcases the rose’s natural facets to their fullest potential. The scent opens with a glorious rose, accompanied by pepper walking beside her. As the fragrance settles into the dry down, it becomes dark, earthy, and slightly humid, evoking a moody vibe. Some describe it as reminiscent of a wet basement. It smells like warm earth, lit by sunlight right after a thunderstorm—slightly mineral, a bit smoky, and with a touch of balsamic snugness. It’s an olfactory snapshot of walking through the woods and stumbling upon a forgotten church, where the remnants of the incense imprinted in the interior walls are mingling with the fleshy scent of the wild roses thriving among the stone ruins, their jammy fragrance glowing like a halo above it. It’s both poetic and photorealistic.

Matière Premiere Radical Rose by Aurelien Guichard

I find all Matière Premiere fragrances wearable, modern, and versatile. Aurelien Guichard masterfully translates the texture of each featured ingredient in his compositions. Radical Rose, for instance, is velvety, oily, and slightly wet—a true olfactive snapshot of Rose Centifolia. It is perfect for heading out after work and enjoying a night on the town. It exudes confidence and pure, untainted sensuality. It’s undeniably carnal, yet it plays the game perfectly, drawing you in and making you lose yourself in the moment.

Notes include: rose, pepper, saffron, patchouli, labdanum.

Disclaimer: I was gifted a bottle of Matière Premiere Radical Rose, but my opinions are always my own.

Matiere Premiere is a brand I’ve had on my radar for a while and I’m glad finally ÇaFleureBon is covering it. I have tried a few of their offerings like Cologne Cedrat, Encens Suave and Vanilla Powder (the one that grabbed my attention the most) but didn’t get the chance to try Radical Rose. Don’t be fooled by only seeing 5 notes, Matiere Premiere fragrances are super potent and complex! Radical Rose based on the review by Olya describes the blossoming of a rose on an old abandoned basement or church after a long time. I can see it beginning with the rose smell but then transitioning to a darker facet with patchouli and saffron, making it a very long last fragrance. From my experience, Matiere Premiere fragrances last at least 10 hours so these are all beasts! Aurelien truly knows his ingredients and how to create fragrances that are unique and don’t follow any trends. Amazing! Cheers from the USA.

  • Olya’s review of Matière Premiere Radical Rose captivated me with its portrayal of a fragrance that redefines the traditional rose scent. The concept of using an “overdose of Rose Absolute” from organically grown Rose Centifolia, combined with spicy saffron and pepper berries, alongside woody patchouli and labdanum, intrigues me. The description of the fragrance evolving into a dark, earthy aroma reminiscent of walking through woods and discovering an ancient church filled with incense is particularly evocative. Living in Nashville, TN, I appreciate unique and bold scents. While I already enjoy Falcon Leather from Matière Premiere, Radical Rose sounds like a fascinating addition to explore.

I love a beautifully crafted rose fragrance. I’m excited, this one sounds wet and dirty, like cutting roses in the garden. I would love to get my hands on this. Beautiful review.
“The reason why I was drawn towards creating perfume was probably because I wanted to collaborate with creative people from different origins and countries.”

  • jessica.rauch says:

Radical Rose sounds like a unique scent and not your typical rose fragrance. I like the spicy and woody elements described in the review. That sounds like an interesting scent profile. I have not yet tried anything from Matiere. I would love to try it! -NYC

  • I’ve been dying to try this one ever since it came out!
I like this concept behind Radical Rose to create “An Overdose of Rose Absolute,” using Rose Centifolia Absolute from roses organically grown in their fields.
I also find it fascinating how bold and unapologetic it is, with a solid backbone that showcases the rose’s natural facets to their fullest potential.
    Sounds amazing!
Still don’t have a favorite, perhaps this one will be!?

  • Rose centric fragrances are always exciting to discover and explore, because the queen of flowers herself is so versatile, varied and full of possibilities.
I find it extremely interesting that Radical Rose tried to capture the highest concentration of rose centifolia absolute. The fact it also smells wet and dirty, moody and temperamental, woody and balsamic, really caught my interest. It truly sounds like a many-faced rose.
I have not had the pleasure to try anything from Matiere Premiere yet.

Olya’s review of Matière Premiere Radical Rose truly captivated my interest with its vivid and poetic descriptions. The imagery of the rose’s multifaceted nature, combined with the elements of saffron, pepper, patchouli, and labdanum, painted a rich olfactory experience that feels both modern and timeless. The way she described the scent as evoking a walk through a forgotten church after a thunderstorm was particularly evocative and resonated deeply with me.

As for a favorite from the brand, Encens Suave holds a special place in my heart. Its warm, incense aroma is both comforting and exotic, making it perfect for those introspective moments. I’m excited to explore Radical Rose and see how it compares!

  • I’m a big fan of Matiere Premiere Fragrances. So happy to see Cafleurebon is always giving them a spotlight. Olga’s review on Radical Rose was perfect the notes making it a modern Rose scent. Thank you for this chance USA

  • I remember reading the article about Aurelien Guichard. I want my comment to count twice so

What fragrance are you the proudest of?

Aurélien Guichard: It is impossible for me to name one only! Radical Rose and French Flower by MATIERE PREMIERE are very special to me, because they are made with my own organic Centifolia Roses and Tuberoses. Right now, I have fond memories of creating Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez, Gucci Guilty and Gucci pour Homme, Eros by Versace, and Burberry Hero.
I love rose perfumes and own French Flower from Matiere Premiere. A bold rose that uses flowers he grows appeals to me

  • The saffron, pepper berries, rose, patchouli, and labdanum notes really spark my interest it sounds like a gorgeous composition. Spicy saffron and pepper berries, enhancing the rose’s vibrancy. I never tried this brand so I don’t really have a favourite. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I have been following the perfumer and his house for a while and am in love with Neroli Oranger. As a lover of rose scents I would love to try Radical Rose as well given the positive review here. As I go on my perfume journey, I am drawn to soliflores and Guichard’s ethos is perfectly in line: “We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to facet the main one.” I live in USA

  • “I did not want to create a brand per se, but a “Maison de Parfumeur” – a house led by a Perfumer, whose mission is to push the limits in terms of olfactive quality and know-how.”. Really speaks to me. I haven’t Reid anything from the brand yet but Radical rose sounds beautiful. I am eager to smell how Guichard make his mark in distinguishing this from other rose scents. It is definitely on my sample list. I live in the US

  • (Colorado, USA). A wet basement? Warm earth? So intriguing! I’ll have to dig out my sample of Radical Rose and see if I can smell that. This fragrance is truly a pleasure to wear. My sample took me through a week long trip to Korea, and sniffing the bottle now brings back a rush of rose-scented memories. This is one of my favorites from the house, along with Parisian Musc and Encens Suave. Aurelian is truly a perfume genius!

  • roxhas1cat says:

I didn’t realize what Matiere Premiere means. I’ve always heard their ingredients are top notch which I can smell in the few I have gotten my nose on. I love that incense note in it, sounds not too overpowering. I have a rose/incense and the incense takes center stage. This sounds like a great balance. Yes, a rose has to stand out, sad that people think of rose as old fashioned. My favorite of the brand is Parisian Musc and Encens Suave. Quote: “I memorized about 2000 ingredients within 3 years”….amazing memory. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I love photorealistic roses, my favorite is Rose de mai by Jean Claude Ellena for Perris Monte Carlo. I am a man. I can wear a rose if the perfumer isn’t trying to make “a jam for women”. I have already tried Encens suave which completely captivated me. In Olya’s review I like when she says: “The challenge was to make Radical Rose stand out amidst hundreds of other rose-centric fragrances on the market. Aurelien Guichard executed this flawlessly, resulting in a fragrance that commands attention.” because that’s exactly what I want to smell like a rose different from all the others ! In Michelyn’s interview I like when Aurelien says: “We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to face the main one.” because I would like more niche perfumes to work with their principles.

  • My Mom’s garden was full of roses. Their beautiful scents, all unique, were intoxicating. I’m most intrigued with the description of the drydown as “dark, earthy, and slightly humid.” I do enjoy earthy fragrances. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

  • Sounds like a stand-out rose, which I’m always game to try, being a bit bored with the usual rose scents these days! The richness and heavy dosing of true rose sound perfect! I live in the US.

  • Versatility and wearability are very important to me and overall radical rose sounds like a very fun/unique fragrance compared to other versatile fragrances for my taste. Olya’s mention of “reminiscent of a wet basement” definitely caught my eye as I really enjoy dark, earthy fragrances. Really like how the dry down sounds and will definitely be checking it out. Current favorite is Santal Austral.

  • I have great respect for Matière Premiere and already love some of their creations like Vanilla Powder and Neroli Oranger.
In the perfume community there have been many reviews of Radical Rose that made me want to have it.
Now Olya sparked my interest even more with “It’s an olfactory snapshot of walking through the woods and stumbling upon a forgotten church, where the remnants of the incense imprinted in the interior walls are mingling with the fleshy scent of the wild roses thriving among the stone ruins, their jammy fragrance glowing like a halo above it. It’s both poetic and photorealistic.”

I had the honor to meet Aurelien Guichard at one of his perfumes’ launches in Lisbon last year. His Crystal Safron is my winter scent and French Flower my spring one. As Olya says, his creations are modern and wearable. And she’s right, Radical Rose is velvety, oily, and slightly wet, fitted for an urban woman.

From the interview: “I grew up in an artistic environment. At home painters, sculptors, couturiers, designers, architects, perfumers and many other kinds of artists were part of our daily lives.” How very French!

I looove the rose and this house seems amazing, want to try. Perfumer is so interesting and i love this quote “grew up in an artistic environment. At home painters, sculptors, couturiers, designers, architects, perfumers and many other kinds of artists were part of our daily lives.”im from eu

  • “For me, as a perfumer, raw materials are the colors I use to create emotions”, this sentence in the interview is the truth, a painter uses colours, the perfumer uses excellent raw materials. I have always loved perfumes and even if not all perfumes belong to me I cannot deny the indisputable quality of the raw materials if they are present. I love rose and I am sure that Radical Rose is an excellent perfume that moves you. Linda (EU)

Rose is such a primordial flower. Forgotten church, labdanum and rose is a combination from summers at my grandmother’s village. I wonder if it resembles my favourite fragrance Cabaret.I live in the EU.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This rose sounds interesting. Wet basement had me hooked lol. I’d love to win and live in Indiana.

  • Indeed once considered old-fashioned, roses have experienced a remarkable renaissance in latest years. Radical Rose seems one of great ones.

Aurélien Guichard: I was certainly influenced by this environment. Because I have such wonderful memories given by these unique people surrounding me in my childhood, and also because I could see both the happiness and sadness, hopes and disappointments, dedication and human friendship linked to the creative work of my father – I knew what I was stepping into when I decided to become a perfumer.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

The wet basement note sounds so interesting! I also adore a dark rose scent. This sounds like rose on steroids! As Aurelien Guichard states he wanted to create a house “which places fragrance quality at the very center of each single step and consideration”, I know the quality of the rose must be exeptional. Thank you for the draw. From the US

  • WillRhodes says:

Matière Premiere is one of the best new lines, and I have been wearing Encens Suave a lot recently. My order came with a couple samples, one of them being Radical Rose, and I really love it. Such a beautiful pachouli rose. Reminds me somewhat of Portrait of a Lady, but I find Radical Rose to be more my preference, especially with that wonderful saffron note and the overall DNA of Matiere Premiere that I appreciate so much. Modern and wearable is right, and I would find great pleasure in this joining my wardrobe.

My favorite from the brand is Parisian Musc. I would love to try Radical Rose. A dark earthy take on the note sounds beautiful. I am in the USA.

“When I smell an ingredient from my perfume organ, I already see beauty and, in many cases, unique textures and technical olfactive qualities.”

  • An over abundance of rose is impossible, especially the bright and bold Centifolia variety. The combination with saffron, pepper, patchouli and labdanum makes the rose dark, earthy and steamy.
From the article: “ …. Raw materials are for me, as a perfumer, the colors that I use to create emotions. I search and source the right ones to express my creative idea.”

  • Matière Premiere Radical Rose, sounds like a bold, outstanding fragrance.
The rose absolute, patchouli, and labdanum…. I would like to add this to my collection.
    From USA

  • Roses needed a much needed uplift, from the dusty aura that surrounds them. Although I love the smell of the rose, my perfume wardrobe sort of lacks roses, but I do blame it on my focus on other flowers (tuberose, I’m looking at you).
Radical Rose set out to be a special rose between the perfumistic field of roses out there, the name Guichard. Aurelien Guichard ( see what I did here?) and the exquisiteness Matiere Premiere vouch for that.
Michelyn words also indicate what a quality rose (but not only) you can find in the beautiful bottles from MP.
“When Aurélien Guichard launched MATIERE PREMIERE in 2019, there was so much buzz in Paris that all of us in the USA were counting the months before the collection would arrive in the United States.”

  • Olya’s review of Matière Premiere Radical Rose intrigued me with its vivid description of the scent’s complexity and depth. The way she highlights the balance between the freshness of the rose and the warm, spicy undertones made me eager to experience this fragrance myself. The interview with Aurelien Guichard adds another layer of fascination, especially his statement, ‘The essence of creation lies in its ability to evoke emotion and memory,’ which perfectly aligns with the evocative nature of Radical Rose. This combination of insightful review and the creator’s philosophy truly sparked my interest

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice review Olya.

Been keeping an eye on this brand because I really like their careful approach to scents – they seem to work with minimal materials of the highest quality.

This fragrance sounds interesting because it’s really hard to stand out with a rose scent. I don’t think I’ve ever smelt a rose scent with the desciptions that are mentioned here.

I’m really excited to try and experience this rose fragrance in all it’s different facets

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Nearly every day, I check into Cafleurebon for the reviews.
But I only comment when I seriously like to win the fragrance.
    Radical Rose is this fragrance.

Olya’s description is intriguing und sounds exactly like what I am searching for in a rose fragrance.

    What sparked my interest?
“bold and unapologetic”, “moody”, “glorious rose”, “stumbling upon a forgotten church”, “velvety, oily, and slightly wet”.

I live in Bavaria, Germany, and plant fragrant roses in our garden.
I have perfumes, even rose perfumes, but none of Matière Premiere as of yet.

  • David Furman says:

Radical rose sounds appropriate for what I’ve read about. Big, bold, and lush rose. It’s good to see it as the centerpieces rather than your usual rose oud combo. Rose can have such a rich and soapy texture when it’s done right. Rose absolute and rose Otto are some of the most sought after ingredients. I just wonder if it’s a dark jammy one or a light punchy sharpe one. Either way I’d love to own it. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • Thank you for the opportunity, interested in seeing how these rise develops as I am a rose lover.

  • realtyisme says:

This has been a fragrance that I’ve been longing to get my nose on since 2021, when it first came to my attention. A quality house for sure. Any fragrance that can capture the natural facets of the rose has captured my attention.

  • zazazelle says:

Matiere Premiere is a new name to me and I was happy to read interview with Aurelien Guichard to discover that he is from Grasse, his father was parfumer and how he cherish natural materials in its absolute beauty:
“There was something absolutely beautiful about the simplicity of a raw material. When I smell an ingredient from my perfume organ, I already see beauty and, in many cases, unique textures and technical olfactive qualities. Often, as fragrances are complex and made with many ingredients, the quality of a single ingredient is not perceivable by the person who wears the fragrance. We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to facet the main one.”
So, at first, I was sceptical to see another new fragrance here, from France, featuring ROSE, but after reading the description and interview with its creator, I am excited. Besides, I really like peppery roses and roses with patchouli, saffron and labdanum, so no doubt I would love to participate in this draw and try my chances to win. If not, I will definitely search, where I can sample Matiere Premiere.
I am from the EU, many thanks!

  • What I’ve always liked about Aurelien Guichard and what Olya seems to reciprocate in her review is that he has a knack for giving scent a texture. When I was reading Michelyn’s interview back from 2022 I was surprised to see him mention just that. He said “When I smell an ingredient from my perfume organ, I already see beauty and, in many cases, unique textures and technical olfactive qualities.” It adds another layer of dimension when thinking about what experience the perfumer wanted you go feel when you smell their creation. Rose has always been one of my all time favorite notes. I’m glad to see that Olya mentioned that Radical Rose had to do something to stand out from all the other rose heavy fragrances on the market. I love that it sounds like a dark, modern, sensual rose. NYC USA

  • I recently read an enthusiastic recommendation for Radical Rose, so I was intrigued to see it highlighted here on ÇaFleureBon too. I love that Aurelien Guichard and Matière Premiere source the rose used in this fragrance from their own organic growing fields. I also appreciate that it stands out from other rose fragrances for more than just its overdose Rose Centifolia Absolute, but also the humid, dark, mineral (perhaps dank?) dry down. “It’s both poetic and photorealistic.” Sounds terrific and it’s on my to-try list, even as a frequent rose-fragrance skeptic. I haven’t tried any Matière Premiere fragrances yet.

Reading Michelyn’s interview with Aurelien Guichard, this line stood out about the perfumer and brand: “It all began when, in 2015, I decided to plant Rose Centifolia on our family domain in the Grasse region. My grand-parents were approaching the end of their life, they had quit farming a few years back. They had taught me so much in my childhood, I wanted to perpetuate this local and family know-how. Also, as a perfumer, I needed to do something more than just formulating. So I filed all the paperwork to acquire the official status of farmer, opened my own organic farm and became the only perfumer to grow his own raw materials.” Radical Rose brings that idea full circle.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Shelley87 says:

This sounds like a lovely perfume. “This fragrance accentuates the bright, spicy facets of the rose with a burnished saffron and pepper berries essence from Jamaica while highlighting its dark, woody facets with patchouli essence from Indonesia and labdanum absolute from Andalusia.” Fun fact: the street I live on is Andalusia! I love rose fragrances, but they are hard to do right. Interested in trying this one!

Matiere Premiere is one brand , which has many great fragrances and underrated ones as well . I really enjoyed the description and all the information about the house and the fragrance. From the house, the one that i enjoyed the most is cologne cedrat and after that vanilla powder. I live in Greece, EU.

  • I’m glad Radical Rose in not a linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis from highest quality Rose Centifolia Absolute and pepper , to dark and earthy to comforting remnants of incense is what intrigues me the most. Like Olya Bar said poetic, photorealistic and naughty rose fragrance.
Matiere Premiere I have no experience with, but the perfumer i know, Gucci Intense Oud punches above its price range.
The quote i liked the most is
“It was all about dedication. I remember the first time I stepped into the laboratory and saw thousands of bottles… it appeared to me like a whole universe, everything and anything seemed possible. This day changed my life – creating perfume became my passion. I wanted to know every single ingredient from every single bottle. I memorized about 2000 ingredients within three years. I was entirely dedicated to the raw materials.”
Rejoicing my job is a blessing to me ,i’m glad Aurelien Guichard feels the same way too
    Thanks to all involved

It is a joy to explore rose fragrances, to see which element will be accentuated. I like peppery and mineral elements, which Radical Rose has. I also like that there perhaps is a wet basement earthiness to the fragrance. That darkness mingling with the fullness of the rose sounds utterly captivating.
I enjoyed reading Aurelien Guichard’s interview with Michelyn. I lie what Mr. Guichard said about Matière Premiere’s fragrances: “they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions.”

  • Melina A Ott says:

Stumbled on this review today left LA this week and should have purchased this at Scent Bar but didn’t and I can’t stop thinking about it. Would love to have it in my collection

  • Olya started off saying how rose is having this sort of renaissance in the fragrance world and that is right. I did not have much experience with rose in fragrances until I picked up my bottle of Portrait of a Lady and that blew my mind. I just never thought I would like it until then and now I am open. I do remember getting a sample of Crystal Saffron and instantly wanting to know more about Aurelien Guichard.

In Michelyn’s interview I remember her noting Guichard mentioning about his time at perfumery school. Saying, “It was all about dedication. I was entirely dedicated to the raw materials.” and you can definitely tell he takes his time and pays attention to every detail when constructing a scent. The combo of rose, saffrom and patchouli has been just daydreaming about wearing it especially with Olya mentioning how much of a true olfactive snapshot of Rose Centifolia it is.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • For around 5 years Matiere Premiere became a cherished and well respected niche brand not just in US but all over the world. Encens Suave is the most famous one and I like how Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief and Olya Bar have chosen a bit under the radar fragrance like Radical Rose , fragrance with floral ,powdery , spicy and carnal personality.
I wonder if the new Matiere Premiere fragrances will be released soon , 4-5 new extait fragrances were hinted by Dutch Instagram influencer, i even remember one of the names Crystal Saffron Extrait

“There are quite a few classically trained perfumers who started their own brands. Why did you decide to do this?

Aurélien Guichard: I did not want to create a brand per se, but a “Maison de Parfumeur” – a house led by a Perfumer, whose mission is to push the limits in terms of olfactive quality and know-how. A house which places fragrance quality at the very center of each single step and consideration. A house which embodies that French Perfumery is all about extreme olfactive modernity and quality, far from the old-fashioned craft as some may see it”
