Matière Première Oud Seven Review (Aurélien Guichard) 2021 + the urban oud draw

Social networks magically remove geographical borders (even Brexit ones!) which is how many perfumistas learned that Takasago Senior perfumer Aurélien Guichard who also is the perfumer for his own brand t  Matière Première has just released an exclusive perfume at London Harrods department store. Since its official launch, everyone  I know wants to smell and wear Matière Première Oud Seven. The name  evokes sensuality, magic and universality, as the number 7 is omnipresent in our daily live;  7 days of the week, the 7 rays of the sun, the 7 colors of the rainbow -in-heaven, the 7 musical notes, the 7 chakras or even… the 7 capital sins. Lucky number 7 is the basis of myths and folklore and in Matière Première Oud Seven it symbolizes the 7 raw materials that accompany Oud Assam Bangladesh, its flagship ingredient. And it’s my personal privilege, from Paris, to review this very surprising fragrance.

But first, why a new oud? I remember discovering this intense and ultra-animalic note about ten years ago, when I was a salesperson for L’Artisan Parfumeur. Bertrand Duchaufour, then in-house perfumer, had just created  L’Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh,  which was the oudiest, most animalic oud I had ever smelt. It was an avant-garde fragrance that went beyond my comfort zone at the time. Over the years, my nose has gotten used to oud. I have never been a great fan of it, although it remains a very fashionable note in perfumery, with a commercial success that does not seem to weaken and continues to inspire the greatest perfumers. In any case, it is a raw material that Aurélien Guichard knows well for bringing it into the bright light of Robert Piguet Oud Divin and Oud Délice.

But Matière Première Oud Seven is not JUST another oud, as M. Guichard told me: “What makes Oud Seven unique is first its central raw material: the Oud Assam Oil by Jalali Argarwood. To me it was an obvious choice, first for its olfactive qualities – it had the strength, warmth, the ambery, rich, animal aspects I was looking for. But it was also the one that became magical when I started overdosing it, like I do for all the central ingredients of Matière Première fragrances. And very importantly, it is an Oud produced responsibly, by a company that contributes socially for its workers and the local population. When you overdose the most qualitative Assam Oud, the challenge is to preserve the outstanding quality of the central raw material, while making a unique fragrance. This overdose of Oud Assam Oil became the diamond I could start faceting with seven ingredients, that I selected from the same, extended family for their strong character, that could highlight the most sophisticated aspects of Oud while containing its animal side.

Matière Première Oud Seven is a Harrods exclusive

Matière Première Oud Seven is a Harrods exclusive – Harrods department store picture ©Emmanuelle Varron, Matière Première Oud Seven 100 ml bottle ©Matière Première.

And why does Matière Première give Harrods a new exclusivity? There is a strong link between Aurélien Guichard and London’s most famous department store: first in 2013 when his Robert Piguet Knightsbridge, a tribute to the luxury store, was introduced. Then, in 2019, when Matière Première Falcon Leather was launched as an Harrods exclusive, giving the young perfume house the opportunity to stand out among very demanding and knowledgeable customers. A success that cannot be denied  and it is one of the Fall big hits. In short, London and Harrods seem to bring him luck …

But let’s talk about Matière Première Oud Seven. You know my usual frankness,  before smelling it I imagined I was about to discover another “Eastern” oud (that would remind me of the famous seven veils dance performed by the sublime Rita Hayworth in William Dieterle Salomé, or a stroll in a souk or, even, an excursion in the desert).  I was wrong. At the first spritz I immediately imagined myself wearing Oud Seven in my beautiful city of Paris strolling along the banks of the Seine, visiting the last exhibition at the Picasso museum, or sharing a “happy hour” on a bistro terrace with friends as it is so urban in character. If usually oud gives me the impression of living in a cage with the most ferocious felines, Matière Première Oud Seven completely changes my perception, and places me outside this famous cage, my face glued to the bars. The intensity, animality and sensuality are still there, but more set back, more framed and totally controlled. For those who are familiar with the Matière Première collection to me Oud Seven is the “evening” counterpart of Parisian Musc: the same finesse, French elegance and an olfactory harmony  and universality.

Matière Première Oud Seven 7 review

Matière Première Oud Seven symbolic 7 bottles – Bottle picture ©Matière Première, photomontage ©Emmanuelle Varron

The opening is lively, playing on the contrast between masculine and feminine: here, vetiver and violet leaves are linked from the first seconds, oscillating between woody and powdery notes, with green and earthy accents specific to the two ingredients. This appetizer takes on aromatic accents when tobacco makes its appearance, even tending towards honey. Slowly, Matière Première Oud Seven warms up and rolls out the red carpet to the fabulous and opulent oud assam Bangladesh, that, miraculously, does not overwhelm the other raw materials. Its animalic side is perceptible, dark and linear, gently raising the temperature and gradually taking on the light. This is perhaps the only moment I feel that Matière Première Oud Seven is leaning masculine with a leathery note. Balance, always! Over the next hour, I perceive the camphorous facet of patchouli which blends wonderfully with oud, giving it a slightly greedy twist (tobacco is undoubtedly for something too) and densifying its opulence, but always in the measure. Looking at the list of ingredients, I noticed the presence of cypriol; it is a raw material that is very popular in India, (bearer of luck in love), with powerful woody accents, which here are juxtaposed with the patchouli-oud accord. A triptych like a spine holds like a plinth. The longevity being, as you can imagine, exceptional, I am each time surprised to feel its presence long hours after vaporizing it. The oud is still noticeable, like a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean, but warmer and rounder notes have succeeded to the powerful woody facets: my skin madly loving labdanum and amber, these two ingredients find their place in this well-balanced perfume bringing a touch of lustful sensuality. Matière Première Oud Seven by Aurelien Guichard is an addictive multi faceted skin fragrance, never falling into an excess of animalics. It is the most urban of ouds.

Notes: vetiver oil Haiti, violet leaf absolute Egypt, tobacco leaf absolute Balkans, oud assam Bangladesh, patchouli oil Indonesia, cypriol oil India, labdanum absolute Andalusia and amber.

Disclaimer: A huge “merci” to Matière Première for the Oud Seven bottle provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • Great review! I don’t have experience with much oud, but I like what I’ve smelled. Thanks for the draw! From Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • Matière Première Oud Seven seems like an impressive perfume that has clear oud note but not too animalic that would scare away people. It is also unisex and has warm composition. Moreover, it uses oud from Asia. I have Piguet Knightsbridge and love it and Matière Première Oud Seven is also Harrods Exclusive so it would be great to get this. I like Oud perfumes but I prefer friendly oud compositions that keep animalic aspect within reason. I am in US.

  • Matiere Premiere is a wonderful fragrance house. I know Oud Seven is going to be a hit. Harrods this being an exclusive that’s great. It’s unisex , Oud Seven sounds like something I would want to wear in the Fall season. Thank you for the chance. USA

  • What a intresting and detailed review, Emmanuelle !
Love animalic notes and oud especially with its woody, animalic, resinous, balsamic touches!
I would like to win this perfume because I have heard so many wonderful reviews about Matière Première perfumes and Emmanuel said that it is rich, animalic and sensual perfume.

  • I’ve heard the quality of Matiere Premiere’s fragrances are incredible. I feel like Emmanuelle helped me smell the fragrance with such great writing. USA

  • Thank you, Emmanuelle! A well-behaved unisex Oud? I love that it is so layered and multifaceted, always with balance. It would be fun to win this, especially since I won’t see London this year. 🙂 NC, USA

  • Thank you Emmanuelle for allowing us to see into the mind of Aurelien Guichard and his inspiration for his creation of Oud Seven. I enjoyed learning of the initial conception of this fragrance and how it evolved into an “addictive multi-faceted skin fragrance…and the most urban of ouds”. Just thinking about this fragrance gives me the “goose bumps”. I am a fan of oud fragrances. Other Matiere Premiere fragrances that I have interest in are Encens Suave (love amber and vanilla) and Neroli Oranger (a great neroli scent). USA

  • Oud fan here…. Lovely review Emmanuelle. We are all privileged to be introduced to this surprising fragrance, surprising cause it’s not your normal oud. Some of my favorites fragrances have oud/aoud notes but can be very intense our as perfumer Aurelien Guichard said can be out of your comfort zone. I’ve sampled Falcon leather recently. USA thanks for this (exclusive) opportunity good luck everyone!! Lucky number 7

  • Emmanuelle! ❤️ What a gorgeous review!!! I Love your description of the notes in Oud Seven! I am a huge Matière Première fan and would SO Love to experience Oud Seven now (instead of having to wait a long time). My favorite Matière Première fragrance is Encens Suave. It reminds me of living in Paris, on rue d’orsel, just where Chateau Rouge, Pigalle, & Sacre Coeur meet. What a gorgeous & sensual scent. Falcon Leather is also fantastic. I’m so curious to experience the “urban” oud that Emmanuelle describes! I am just beginning to explore oud fragrances. So far, my favorite oud is Moto Oud by Blackbird (it also feels urban), I really want to compare it to Oud Seven! I have much to learn. Thank you for this amazing opportunity! Whoever wins will be SO lucky! M. Guichard’s perfumes are amazing! USA ❤️

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Wow! Wonderful review and now I’m really tempted to try this one. Because like you, Emmanuelle, sometimes I just find many oud fragrances to be overly animalic, so much so that I’d be worried to wear them around other people. But the idea of an urban oud that performs more like a sophisticated skin scent is very appealing! Thank you for this. I’m in the USA.

  • Darla Bellissimo says:

Lovely layers,In-depth indeed.Cozy up warm violet and patchouli tingling my scented.Silage was a all nighter for sure

  • Emmanuelle’s story of her experience with oud really stood out. It’s a reminder of how, in such a short time, this note has become so important in (Western) perfumery. I like oud-centric fragrances. I’ve never smelled any Matière Première fragrances, but I’d love to try Oud Seven. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw.

  • I’ve been starting to dip my toe into the Oud lately and this seems like a good place to get my nose more aquatinted. I trust this house/perfumer’s quality so would be so grateful to get this bottle. The review makes this seem like a quality Oud that is still approachable.
    In US.

  • I don’t know this house, but I am glad to see that it’s becoming more and more popular – and you can see it here as well, as there are plenty articles on it!
It has some great notes and I am sure that Aurelien is doing a great job, as usual.
    Thank you from EU!

  • I enjoyed this review and I like that ‘Matière Première Oud Seven by Aurelien Guichard is an addictive multi faceted skin fragrance, never falling into an excess of animalics. It is the most urban of ouds.’
I don’t know any from this house, but wouldn’t mind starting the exploration journey with this one.

  • I absolutely love oud fragrances, an urban one with oud assam, patchouli, cypriol , labdanum and amber notes like Matiere Premiere Oud Seven it’s a delight for the senses! From EU, thanks for the draw and the review!

  • I always love reading Emmanuelle’s reviews! As other Cafleurebon reviewers, there’s a level of truthfulness about her reviews that I absolutely love! Other than that, I love taking a stroll (in my mind at least) through cities and imagining the perfume on me – her descriptions are always SPOT ON! I absolutely LOVE oud centric perfumes – be it funky, animalistic oud like Faqat al Rijah by Rasasi or The Night by Frederic Malle, as well as tamed down western ouds like M7 (the original) by YSL, Oud Wood etc.. I tried EVERY single Matiere Premiere perfume! I thought very highly of them, they are incredibly well blended, Aureliens mastery comes to forefront with every single one of them! I loved Falcon Leather and Parisian Musc the most out of the collection and bought both of them to have in collection, and since Emmanuelle said that Oud Seven is an evening counterpart to Parisian Musc – well, that is just right up my alley! Sadly, I’m not in UK, so I can’t try it out or buy it in Harrods, but would love to win it, I’m sure this would be in my favourite perfumes of the year list! I live in Croatia, EU.

This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am familiar with the perfumer. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Very interesting review! I love any kind of Oud fragrance and that one sounds great, a new direction to explore this amazing world.
    Thanks!
    I live in EU.

  • What a beautiful review. Thank you Emmanuelle. It was really interesting to read.
The quality and longevity of Matiere Premiere perfumes is incredible. I discovered this brand just recently and became a huge fan of the brand. I recently purchased “Falcon leather’ and “Radical rose”, adore both of these. Absolutely love “Neroli Orange” and “Encens Suave” as well, these are on my wish list.
“Oud Seven” sounds AMAZING. My love to oud perfumes started when I moved to Dubai, UAE. It took me a while to really appreciate it as some can be so strong. But now it’s one of my favourite things in perfumery.
I’m in between UK and UAE.

  • I totally love oud perfumes and this one has plenty of everything I look for in a perfume! It has oud (of course), it has patchouli, there is also amber, vetiver – you can’t miss it, and it’s also some labdanum for a nice, final touch!

    Thank you!

  • I feel like this is an amazing review with lots of details and interesting information. I live in Poland EU, I really like oud centric perfumes. My favorite Matière Première fragrance is Falcon Leather.

  • I didn’t know cypriol is believed to give you luck in love. now I will be looking for cypriol! Ouds are still new to me so I would love to try this.
I have not experienced Matiere Premiere fragrances. TX USA

  • Anamalic scents are my favourite kind , so to see this has those aspects but are both refined and restrained has my curiosity piqued!

It can be hard to balance making them noticeable and yet not overwhelming everything else in a composition , so I’m really curious how it was managed in this perfume!

I love oud in all its forms.

I’m only familiar with Santal Austral from the brand , so by default it’s my favourite.

    I live in Israel.

  • What a great review – it made me want to try this perfume even more! I usually like oud fragrances, although I am very cautious with “Eastern” ouds, since sometimes it might get too animalic on my skin, and I don’t always feel comfortable wearing them. However, based on this review, this is exactly the oud I would love to!
I enjoy Matiere Premiere creations, and my favorite is Encens suave, which is my sotd today, by the way.

  • As a unisex fragrance lover, I do enjoy many notes that are found to lean masculine. I’m always excited to discover another oud perfume. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • ANDREEA ELENA TIMOFTE says:

A Masterpiece…Urban oud sounds really interesting. And the fact that it is not very animalic sounds good.
Also 7 ingredients from 7 parts of the world if you noticed it.
Amazing, good quality ingredients, I really wish I win this parfum!
I live in London, UK, but I haven’t heard of Matière Première fragrances. Or maybe…couldn’t afford to hear 🙁
Fingers crossed, thank you for the oppotrunity!!

  • I love that parfumistas around the globe all found out about this Harrod’s exclusive release. The most interesting thing, to me, about Emmanuelle’s review is where she aligns Oud Seven with Parisian Musc. I understood what she meant when she said it is the night version. I have had mixed experience with oud, the ones I love, I LOVE. I am in the US.

  • The detailed description of the perfumes development has me feeling I want this. I like or dislike oud fragrances one at a time. US

  • Nice review Emmanuelle! Love your frankness and your fear to try another ““Eastern”oud” and your surprise with this fragrance. I also make ugly faces when I see a new oud fragrances but I am glad to see that you recognize this one is different: addictive and multifaceted and not just animalic. I love how Mr. Guichard choose noble and highest quality raw materials for Matiere Premier . Here we have the Oud Assam Bangladesh: must be amazing to smell this opulent oil! . I tried once Encens Suave, because I love Incense perfumes, and it is a great smoky gourmand juice! I live in Spain, EU.

  • I am not familiar with this brand but I love Oud fragrances. I live in the US and I love this perfumer’s work for Robert Piguet. I love fragrances that use the raw material of Oud and I love patchouli and wood resins .

  • Bryant Worley says:

I think Emmanuelle’s review was excellent, breaking down the fragrance into its many facets, helping us visualize what it would smell like at different times during the wearing. And the enthusiasm displayed just enhanced the review.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA, and have never experienced an Oud-centric fragrance.

    I have never experienced a
Matière Première fragrance, but after perusing the site, I wouldn’t mind sampling FALCON LEATHER, BOIS D’ÉBÈNE, COLOGNE CÉDRAT, PARISIAN MUSC, RADICAL ROSE, etc.

  • What an incredible draw! How lucky are we to have a chance at this exclusive scent. Emmanuelle’s description was wonderful, and I know people talk about Paris in the springtime, but this made me think about Paris in the fall! In Louisiana, USA.

  • Thank you for this wonderful comprehensive article Emmanuelle!

I have a small bottle of Encens Suave from Matière Première.
There are many Incense fragrances that I tried, but none of them really interested me. Matière Première managed to create such a smooth, warm and comforting experience I knew I had to get a bottle. Fantastic brand.

When Emmanuelle talks about Oud Seven’s finesse, the French elegance and an olfactory harmony, I know exactly what she means and am excited to try this new release.

I love Oud, but I am not one that goes for the challenging Ouds. The fact that this is more of a Parisian than an Arabian Oud really piqued my interest!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I love fragrances which use oud as a main player, yet manage to soften and round it up with other notes that are more mellow and graceful, in this case labdanum and amber, which also happen to be one of my favorite notes.
I have unfortunately never tried Matiere Premiere before. I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Lovely review of Matière Première Oud Seven by Emmanuelle. Love oud, and oud perfumes in general, and have tried Al Oudh, Montale’s Honey Aoud, Mancera Black Aoud, Halfeti, Levantium, and so on. It is a distinctive smell but I like it in its various avatars. From the ingredients, and the review, Matière Première Oud Seven appears to be a very strong and earthy perfume, but also urbane for those not used to, or not in love with, the animalic facets of oud. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Loved the review, and especially the description of the notes, and how they form some sort of “urban oud” – that phrase alone is fantastic! (may i suggest the Oud by MFK as another urban oud?)

I love oud-centric perfumes, have to stop myself from buying only Oud stuff! Sadly i have never tried any Matière Première fragrance.

    Living in the EU

  • I am intrigued by this review!
I love oud and have read that Aurelien Guichard used very high quality ingredients! Animalic notes with leather sides and woods will be perfect!
Unfortunately I haven’t tried any from this brand!
    Armenia

  • I have never tried one of their perfumes so I do not have a favorite. As of right now, I am not a huge oud fan. I appreciate the artistic intent needed to create such works. In maryland.

  • wandering_nose says:

I like a more tame oud, in which the animalic aspect is a bit subdued and controlled, so Oud Seven seems to fit the bill. The warm, ambery hues add to the appeal it has to me. Then the vetiver, tobacco, patchouli and labdanum seal the deal. Emmanuelle’s descriptive and very imaginative review is like a dream of the finest beauty and sophistication that comes true in the ‘city of light’. I have not experienced Matière Première creations but would love to as they sound just otherworldly. I like oud-centric fragrances where the oud is not too animalic and overwhelming. I would be delighted to try Oud Seven. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • Oud, my favorite note. I really love it, medicinal, fecal, etc. I am glad that Emmanuelle enjoyed Oud Seven, it really sounds amazing.
I owned Piguet Oud (another Aurelien Guichard masterpiece) and enjoyed it a lot, it’s animalic Oud-myrrh-earthy patchouli combo was fantastic and God, I miss it badly. I am sure I will love Oud Seven, it looks like my kind of fragrance, the notes, the oudy ozonic and camphorous feeling, and of course, it’s animalic aspect that intrigues me a lot. I hope to be as lucky as the number 7 so I can enjoy this new Oud fragrance that sounds beautiful.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to participate for this generous prize.
    My best regards from Mexico.

  • I use to wear oud centric fragrances all the time and then I put them aside for awhile. With the cooler weather approaching, I’m starting to rediscover my stash. I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiiere but am fascinated by the “overdose” of oud assam oil used as the starting point for the fragrance. The provenance of the other notes is impressive as well. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Oh, I definitely love Oud oriented perfumes, how could I not? Oud Delice is also one of my favorites for how unusual an oud it is, which makes me even more interested to try this one. Thank you for this lovely review, I’d love to try an “urban” oud! US

  • I quite enjoy oud forward fragrances. Many people find them challenging, however I do not get strong dirty notes that some people do from it. It simply smells rich and luxurious to me. What captured my eye about the review is how balanced this fragrance is. I’m always on the lookout for an oud that doesn’t throw rose into the mix, as seems to be the common trope!
    Thank you from Canada.

  • My favourite note family is the wood. So I love many facets of oud, but I’m not a huge fan of animalic notes when too dominant. What I read here is very intriguing for me: a balanced and urban oud along with other favourites vetiver and tobacco. I haven’t tried anything from Matière Première before, unfortunately. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I’d love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • Love the 7’s reference from Emmanuelle’s review. I live in Texas USA. Like oud centrics and my favorite Matiere Premiere fragrance is Santal Austral.

  • I really like oud, and especially the facets which Emmanuelle highlights: the warm, ambery and animalic aspects. I am especially curious about this as it contains natural oud, something that is quite rare in western perfumery.

    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • A lot of people are talking about Matiere Premiere on Instagram, and YouTube, I’m still new to the brand.
I like how Oud Seven is part wild man, and at one point turns into gentleman. I’m more comfortable with its ambery , sophisticated tobacco and oud part .
Thanks to Emmanuelle and Matiere Premiere
    USA, rarely Paris France

  • Thank you for the great review Emmanuelle.

Oud is certainly a hard beast to tame and very often smells barnyardy or urinal cake like.

I’m fascinated by your review, especially of the imagery created by your prior oud perceptions (being in a cage with wild animals) and this fragrance( being on the outside, with your face pressed to the bars) – what a wonderful metaphor for this brilliant material.

I love oud in all it’s forms, mainly because of where I grew up. Animalic ouds or skanky ouds are not the mistake of the material, rather of the hand that wields them.”

I’ve not had a chance to smell anything from this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I really like how Emmanuelle has relatedbthe perfume with the artística world and the glamurous side of Life. And of course I LOVE how then she explains the development of the Fragrance.
I have not tried any matiere premiere perfume yet but this giveaway could be a great opportunity!!
Regardingy test for oud I must say that… I LOVE It!!! At the beginning I could not stand with oud fragrances since I found them too dirty and strong but every time I smell more and more I like this note also more!! Above all when It is worked in an original way!!

  • Fragrance Capital says:

Natural Oud and tobacco! These are my favorite notes ever. I like all levels of oud and tobacco variants especially if they are crafted by a senior perfumer like Aurélien Guichard. The review is awesome and covered all the questions that could be asked about a new fragrance release with a complex note like animalic oud. Thank you so much, Emmanuelle! I did not have the chance to smell any of Matière Première fragrances, therefore I’m looking to win this Oud Seven perfume. Cheers from Sarajevo, BiH

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Really, How could I not, having fallen for a number of Matiere Premier perfumes, this exclusive release certainly garners my interest. The fact that its a sophisticated oud, with deftly chosen Parisian aspects, moving us away from the middle eastern association. Hoping to smell this one here in Firenze. I live in SW France

  • I am very intrigued by Matiere Premiere, a sample set is on my wish list since I keep on reading amazing reviews about Aurelien Guichard’s work. I totally relate with what Emmanuelle says about oud: I have started about 1 year ago to develop an interest in niche perfumery and try new things, and oud is still a difficult note. When it’s too animalic it’s really too much for me! So it would be really great to be able to smell Oud Seven, as the oud seems well balanced by the other notes and the fragrance really looks elegant and urban. Greetings from Italy

  • I’m an Oud fan! I would love to win this perfume
Thank you Emmanuelle for the great review!

  • I do like perfumes focused on oud, but I am very special and picky about oud, I think I have that in common with Emmanuelle.
After reading the review I admit that Oud Seven strikes me so much, it seems to have a very luxurious and sensual aroma, the kind of Oud that I like.
I would love to be considered for this giveaway. I have never had the opportunity to smell any Metière Première perfume, I hope Oud Seven to be my first.
    Thank you very much.
I send you greetings from Mexico.

  • What a fabulous review, Emmanuelle! You’re right: I am dying to try these fragrances, and the word “exclusive to Harrod’s” makes this one in particular, even more tempting. I also find oud very challenging. The oud fragrances that I do like are few and far between, but this sounds so smooth and enticing. I don’t have a favorite Matière Première fragrance yet, but this might be my favorite description yer. I’m in New York! Thank you all for another great review and a great draw!

  • My interest is piqued … I never had the chance to try Oud Assam Oil and its olfactive qualities described by M. Guichard – “it had the strength, warmth, the ambery, rich, animal aspects I was looking for”, but I think I will enjoy it greatly. Why? Some of my favorites ouds (I love them all, but I tend to favor warm ouds) include Xerjoff Malesia, The Bewitching Yasmine from Penhaligon’s, Sahraa Fragrance Du Bois, Fidelis Histoires de Parfums.

Oh, and i love Encens Suave by Matiere Premiere.

I live in Europe, thanks for the opportunity!

  • I have tried oud-based fragrance before and found them to be a little much for me, just like Emmanuelle. I love how the review describes how this oud is well blended and places you a little removed from the super animalistic smell I associate with oud; that’s why I would love to try it. I live in the US.

  • what a great read! I am a self-professed Oud junkie, so this one I absolutely MUST try! It sounds very complex and beautiful – I am interested in how the combination of different ouds with labdanum smell in this amazing offering. I remember vividly trying my first read oud in Abu Dhabi in 2014 – It took me on a magic carpet ride I haven’t hopped off of yet. I’m in Washington DC. I have not tried any Matière Première perfumes yet.

I’m not familiar with this house but this sounds so wonderful. I am a fan of oud but some are definitely too animalic for me. I love the way you describe the balance of this perfume and the imagery of oud as the lighthouse is wonderful. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

Emmanuelle did an amazing job of painting several very vivid pictures of this fragrance may be interpreted.

The Oud representing a wild beast with the animalics often associated to Oud, but instead of being in the cage with the animal, you are standing just outside the cage, the ferocity of the Oud is there in full affect, but it is contained, it can not get out of control and harm you. Brilliant!

I have never tried anything from this house, but this review makes me think that this fragrance is so incredibly well balanced:
    Light/Dark
    Feminine/Masculine
    Playful/Dangerous
And has definitely piqued my interest.

In the past I did not appreciate Oud much at all.
But over the last year I’ve grown to appreciate and even admire Oud.
I’m still not big on very barnyard or fecal smelling ouds, but I do enjoy a smooth, classy Oud that gives a fragrance a sense of maturity and nobility.

I live just outside of Houston Tx.

  • I found, perfumer, Aurelien Guichard’s description of this fragrance, and his description of all of his Matiere Premiere releases, to be fascinating and informative. I haven’t tried anything yet from Matiere Premiere, but I’d like to. I can like oud in fragrances, but I haven’t tried many oud-centric fragrances. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • It seems he’s answered the “Why another oud?” question. I like different interpretations of it, so would love to add this Harrod’s Exclusive to my modest collection. It’s an accomplishment that the Assam oil is more subdued in the scent and has a more “composed” quality, along with the “camphorous” patchouli. So far, my favorite of the Matiere releases is Cologne Cedrat. Best wishes from Dallas, TX.

  • Very evocative review. I feel like I have informed expectations for Oud Seven. That list of ingredients is stunning, with the Oud Assam from Jalai being the pinnacle. This material is so expensive that you are unlikely to experience it in even the most opulent of niche perfumes. This will be a true prize and the crown jewel of any collection.

I am familiar with only Encens Suave from Matière Première, but it’s a stunning, explosive incense. Expertly done.

Thanks so much for the draw! From Canada.

  • Oud Seven is intriguing colder weather fragrance I’ll try next time in London . Ruff opening maybe, but tobacco in base with some resins, and some playfulness is exactly what I’m looking for.
Matiere Premiere Encens Suave I’ve smelled , high end gourmand. I do know Aurélien Guichard too
    Another good opportunity , thanks
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, two weeks in US -> two weeks in Scotland, and so on. Basically both USA and UK at the same time

  • I have yet to smell oud or anything from Matiere Premiere. This sounds like a wonderfully wearable oud with many notes that I do know I love. USA

  • I find oud centered perfumes to be very mesmerizing, deep and rich. Unless they are animalic ouds, i really enjoy them. A patchouli-oud accord sounds very interesting. I hope to try out this fragrance and see if it is in fact unisex. Thank you for the opportunity. I live in Romania, EU.

  • I’ve smelled all Matiere Premiere fragrances, except for Oud Seven , and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Encens Suave
    2. Santal Austral
    3. Falcon Leather
Oud Seven is an interesting fragrance , with both dark, and light side , and connections to Harrods.
Funny thing is I perceive a lot of tobacco in Falcon Leather, i wonder if it’s the same one used in the new UK exclusive.
I don’t think Oud Seven is a butch fragrance, confident woman can easily pull it off.
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot
    USA only…for now

  • I’m glad Oud Seven in not a linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis from animalic oud , to comforting resins , vetiver and tobacco , is what intrigues me the most.
Matiere Premiere I have no experience with, but the perfumer i know. Gucci Intense Oud punches above its price range. I like oud perfumes , but never had a chance to smell Matiere Premiere creations
Thank you Emmanuelle Varron, Matiere Premiere

  • Oud Seven opening sounds just a bit hairy-chested, with the exception quality “Oud Assam Oil by Jalali Argarwood” , but mellows into sensual resinous fragrance, with powerful woody facets . Top of the line cold weather fragrance .
Aurélien Guichard i know for Gucci Intense Oud , and yes , I love Oud. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with Matière Première fragrances.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • “At the first spritz I immediately imagined myself wearing Oud Seven in my beautiful city of Paris strolling along the banks of the Seine”

Good old days living in Paris… Interesting enough by overdosing Assam Oud , Aurelien Guichard actually achieved his vision for
Oud Seven. I also tweak here, and there some of the original recipes , a lot of i learned studying under the great Pierre Hermé , one ot the best Pastry Chefs and chocolatier .At some point Emmanuelle Varron was part of his company too , I saw it on her Twitter.
I have a sample of Encens Suave now , smoky , incense vanilla, with boozy feel. I see Oud Seven is more focused on the Oud , but keeps the resins, and adds tobacco . Encens Suave is a great fragrance , I presume Oud Seven is just as good. Yes I like oud fragrances.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Great review Emmanuelle! I particularly liked the part of the review where we learned about M. Guichard’s commitment to socially and ethically responsible extraction of the precious oud raw material. This is an issue that I’m very concerned about, and it is comforting to hear that it is of serious concern to the perfumer and a point of careful consideration. I am very excited to try this fragrance and it’s good to know that I can support this perfumer and this oud perfume with a clear conscience.

I live in the US. I very much ADORE oud centric perfumes, and unlike Emmanuelle, I usually prefer to be inside the cage with the felines rather than on the outside looking in. My favorite oud centric perfume is Bortnikoff’s Oud Maximus. I have not tried many Matière Première fragrances but of the ones I’ve tried Falcon Leather is my favorite.

  • Matiere Premiere I’m not familiar with, but I like complex fragrances, with a lot of depth.
Woody, powdery , green and earthy, tobacco …even honey? Oud Seven is no doubt fragrance with a character.
Labdanum and amber drydown, the oud and tobacco is why I’m drawn to it.
Aurélien Guichard made a special fragrance, I know it
    Thanks for the draw
