Brassens sings defiantly about his mauvaise reputation on the tape deck behind the bar as the patron pours Jenlain beer into tall glasses. Through the long windows, rain patters on the cobblestones. It’s a time before cellphones or televisions blaring sportscasts; M. Brassens is interrupted only by the occasional barks of the chef in the tiny kitchen in the back and the animated hubbub of the table of students near the door. The air indoors is warm as a blanket and steamy with dozens of café au lait. As the waitress hurries past, bakery smells from just-out-of-oven croissants, thick with sweet butter, drift across the room tantalizingly. My café crème smiles up at me from its enormous wide-lipped cup – the barman drew a face in the foam – the whipped milk at its brim as thick as clotted cream. I sit back for that first milky sip, grab the copy of Le Monde someone left on the table next to mine, and feel certain that there is nowhere else I should be.

My first forays to Parisian cafes are indelible: the bubbling whoosh of the espresso machine, the bargello rise and fall of conversation; businessmen in suits gravely reading the day’s news, friends chattering over endless Gauloises and ballons of Beaujolais. And the aroma – a mingle of bakery smells, bitter coffee, dark chocolate, cigarettes, hot milk and caned wood. But I never thought I would find that unmistakably singular fragrance in a perfume until I smelled Maison Tahité Velvet Coffee.

While I am also a tea drinker, coffee is my first love: its bitter, earthy flavour, the roasty smell as it brews, the pop and bubble of the espresso maker. And coupled with a generous piece of seriously dark chocolate, it is one of my favourite flavour combinations. So, how in the world did I miss Maison Tahité’s coffee-centric line of perfumes (it’s other lines are based on vanilla and cacao) until Pitti Fragranze last fall? Fortunately, there they were, tucked into a corner in all their caffeinated glory. While I liked them all, Velvet Coffee, created by IFF perfumer Delphine Lebeau, caught my attention straightaway with its uncanny evocation of a classic French café.

Ah, that first spray! It’s a delicious rush of dark chocolate, barely sweet, and roasted coffee, bitter and toasty. Initially, Velvet Coffee smells of the undiluted beans of its key notes, not brews – the chocolate is unsweetened and dusty (I begin to detect cardamom), while the coffee is toasted and slightly floral. The unbearably tempting smell of butter pastry not far behind, and I quickly find myself taken back years ago to that little joint in Oberkampf, sampling noisettes with my friend Mia in our quest to find the best coffee in Paris. As the coffee and coca settle in, viennoiserie wafts in like an edible breeze. The pastry scent here is brilliant – off-sweet, creamy, buttery, and textural to the point where I imagine the flakes of the baked dough falling into my lap.

Maison Tahité Velvet Coffee is from the Coffee Collection

Lost in reminiscing for a while, I revisited the scent about twenty minutes later. In its mid-section, Velvet Coffee merges cardamom and coffee more noticeably as the cocoa moves back a bit. The scent starts to become rounder and more flowery with the arrival of leatherwood – a Tasmanian tree with hints of orange blossom – and orris. The orris, which is responsible for much of the pastry sensation, becomes much stronger now as itself, thanks to the reinforcing rooty sweetness of carrot oil. Sandalwood smooths everything out neatly, and the cedar in the mix is uncharacteristically quiet. But the combined wood notes towards the dry down remind me again of the cafes, with their striated wood walls and rattan chairs. Patchouli and vetiver bring a subtle earthiness to the finish. And then I’m ready to reapply to relive that delectable opening.

Maison Tahité Velvet Coffee is so redolent of the smells I associate forever with Paris that all I need to do now is pour another cup of my weekend black brew, dig out some Brassens, spritz my wrist and close my eyes. Paris, here I come.

Notes: Cardamom co2 (lmr), cocoa abs md, benzoin resinoid, cedarwood heart Virginia (lmr), coffee accord, orris accord, carrot oil, sandalwood oil album, oakmoss absolute, leatherwood, patchouli heart (lmr), vetiver oil Haiti md for life, vanilla accord, ambroxan.

  • I just love the scene that was painted for Maison Tahite, Velvet Coffee…I myself have found such peace and contentment in the chair of Parisian cafe by its sounds, smell, and ambiance. There seems to be so many beautiful chapters in the journey of this fragrance, all ones I would love to read as if I’m paging through a newspaper with a cafe au lait and buttery croissant in company. A place of aromas I often find myself longing for….

  • I enjoy drinking coffee and love the smell of it. Velvet Coffee sounds great with its dusty and unsweetened chocolate, pastry, and with the toasted and slightly floral coffee note. I have not yet sampled anything from Maison Tahité as they are hard to find in my country. Greetings from EU.

  • I do enjoy coffee in the morning and would love to win. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Maison Tahité. I liked the sound of a hint of orange blossom. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

Lauryn, You brought the scene together perfectly for me. I can almost smell this creation on my screen, as I read your article. The orris and its different stages in this fragrance has captured my attention. The coffee, cardamom, and pastry scents own my heart 🙂

  • I love how this fragrance evokes the feeling of being in a Parisian café and that concept really intrigues me as a coffee lover (also in scent). I’ve never sampled any Maison Tahité fragrances yet. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

Hi! I Live in Spain, in THE EU and this perfume really intrigues me. This mix of coffee with cocoa and patchouli and the sweetness of the carrots oíl. I love the association that Lauryn makes between the perfume and the cafés from Paris. I really would like to win the perfume and feel like having a coffee in the Senna from home….

  • I have yet to try anything from Maison Tahite. However, I am very familiar with their sister house, Laboratorio Olfattivo, and if the latter’s works are any indication at all, this line will be of the utmost quality. I am a relatively recent convert to coffee in fragrances. I love the smell of coffee, but until about 4-5 months ago, it was something I didn’t think I would want to wear. I then tried a few coffee based frags (Akro Awake, Montale Ristretto Intense Cafe, and the Follow/Followed duo from Kerosene) that opened my eyes to how beautiful coffee can be in a perfume. Lauryn’s description of this one makes me think it would be just as beautiful. I love all things orris and with the extra kick from carrot seed in this, I imagine a smooth buttery quality that would pair quite well with the coffee and elicit the sensation of a nice warm pastry. Sounds delicious! Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Isn’t it wonderful when a scent transports you to a place or a memory. Although I’ve only been to Paris once, and I don’t recall a particular scent, I’d love to try this out. In maryland.

  • This review captures the aromatic allure of Velvet Coffee, whisking us away to a cozy French café where the scent of freshly brewed coffee dances in the air. Delphine Lebeau’s creation promises a sensory journey filled with warmth, comfort, and the lingering essence of caffeine-fueled dreams. Sounds like a masterpiece! I live in Italy EU

  • I am obsessed with coffee Fragrances And obsessivly trying everything i am able. This sounds like a dream, Coffee, choco, cardamon. Would be so happy to try it and have my bakery Coffee fantasy. Im from eu

  • I like that Velvet Coffee sounds (and smells) like a classic French café. The blend of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and pastry notes are dream notes for every gourmand lover like me. And what I lack is the wanderlust for Parisian cafes, so after this review I am very curious to experience the fragrance myself. I haven’t sampled Maison Tahité fragrances, unfortunately yet, but this one piques my interest a lot!

    I am from the EU.

  • I almost felt Lauryn’s parisian nostalgia reading the review – although I haven’t been to Paris (yet).
It sounds unbelievably amazing that Velvet Coffee can be so powerfully evocative of a certain place, of a certain sensorial experience.
Apart from that – being an ardent fan of this small ritual of pairing unsweetend coffee with sweets – Velvet Coffee sounds like my trip to Paris just waiting to happen.
Thank you for this beautiful review and the draw, from EU.

Maison Tahité appeals to me in all aspects of their perfume art. I love their gourmand (but exquisite, not just sweet gourmand) leaning creations, the shape and color of the bottles, the design of the labels, and even the caps. Lauryn has written an amazing review, realistic to the point of triggering the salivary glands in readers. I am much intrigued by the orris being responsible for most of the pastry sensation. The butteriness of orris can truly be delectable so I would love to experience this delicious affair. I haven’t had a chance to try Maison Tahité fragrances as of yet. Thank you for the draw. I am based in the EU.

A fascinating little scent. There’s probably no way you can go wrong smelling of coffee, chocolate, and pastry. I wish that I had the experience of a parisian bakery to compare to, though I might be able to find an approximation somewhere with the right bakery. US.

  • I read this review while making my own French Press coffee this morning (Mexican Chiapas). It could not have been more timely. Every aspect of this is enticing. Ah Paris! The fragrance of baked goods wafting over cane backed chairs and mingling with the scent of bitter coffee, chocolate and cardamom. I need to get a whiff of this as soon as possible. Best wishes to the EU winner.

  • This is a brand I’ve been wanting to try! I love gourmands but haven’t yet tried any coffee scents. This sounds absolutely delicious! I love finding a cute cafe when in a new area and I feel this fragrance would evoke that feeling.

  • Gourmand fragrances with coffee notes are a favorite of mine. When combined with cardamom, chocolate and an orris induced pastry scent, you have a lovely escape to a Parisian cafe. I’m interested in the orange blossom scented leatherwood note and the earthiness provided by the patchouli and vetiver. I’m in the US.

  • My mouth was watering just as I was reading this article. As an avid coffee lover myself, I absolutely agree that there’s nothing quite like that rush one gets when taking the first sip of a hot, dark, fragrant cup of coffee. Paired with dark chocolate? Yes, please. With an aftertaste of pastries? Absolutely.
The whole pyramid sounds elegant, cozy and wholesome.
I have not tried any Maison Tahité perfumes so far and I live in the EU.

  • I can’t drink coffee anymore so i search its smell in perfumes. This seems to be like the wonderful perfume of cafes in Paris so it is what I’m searching for. Chocolate, coffee and pastries…mouthwatering.

  • Lauryn’s vivid description of Velvet Coffee by Maison Tahité creates an alluring atmosphere of a classic French café. The immersive details, from the aroma of bakery delights to the thick clotted cream-like milk in the café crème, make it enticing. The nostalgia for a time before modern distractions adds to the charm, and the fact that the fragrance captures the essence of a Parisian café resonates with the coffee lover in me. I have never tried any Maison Tahité creation

Striated walls and rattan chairs, earthiness and I suppose, kind of dustiness evocation is what draws me into this fragrance. I have sampled Sel Vanille and Ristretto, they were very alluring. I live in the EU.

  • It’s not hard to fall in love with this scent without even having tried it, by simply closing my eyes and imagining Lauryn’s périple in Paris. I’m intrigued by the combination of coffee, vetiver and patchouli. I’ve never had the chance of testing any Maison Tahite perfumes so far. I live in The Netherlands, EU

  • I have several coffee scents, some more photorealistic than others, and am addicted. What gets me about this one is the cardamom note. I grind cardamom seed into my coffee grounds every morning because I so love those two smells and tastes combined. I know I’m not eligible but enjoyed Lauryn’s review.

  • I am a huge lover of coffee and I drink it all the time. I also love coffee as a note in fragrances, therefore I am always excited to try something new that features coffee. Such a fragrance seems like a bridge between two big loves of my life – coffee and perfumes.
I am looking forward to trying this one.
    Thanks!

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Thank you Lauryn, Maison Tahite do a magnificent job of chocolate, vanille and coffee collections and this one is a beauty. Smooth and full of french life, it exudes cafe culture. Lucky enough to reside in France, Velvet Coffee feels like home. Thank you again, I live in SW France

  • Lauryn’s description of the smell of Parisian cafes makes a compelling case for Velvet Coffee: “a mingle of bakery smells, bitter coffee, dark chocolate, cigarettes, hot milk and caned wood.” I’m intrigued to read that the chocolate and coffee notes here are bitter, toasty, dry, and a little floral, versus overly sweet and decadent, which is often the case with coffee-themed fragrances. The “off-sweet, creamy, buttery, and textural” pastry scent sounds equally restrained and inviting. And the earthy, spiced dry down sounds lovely. Velvet Coffee might be my kind of coffee fragrance.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Maison Tahité fragrances.

  • The truth is that the selection of notes that this perfume has are one of my favorites. I haven’t had the chance to smell it yet, but I’m sure it won’t disappoint. Greetings from Spain.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Lauryn. YOur nostalgia for the Parisian Cafe is so palpable.

I love how Maison Tahite Velvet Coffee is described as a perfume reminiscent of a classic Parisian cafe. The notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, cardamom, and pastry paired with the “round and more flowery” facets of orris and carrot oil and the nice woody “leatherwood” , really make this a very textural experience – as thick as the foam on your cafe.

Overall, the perfume sounds like a delicious and comforting fragrance that would be perfect for coffee lovers.

I have not had the chance to sample fragrances from this brand.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m still in search of a beautiful coffee scent, the review really captivated my attention, i would love to get my nose on it.
