The house explored the richness and complexity of vanilla in their debut collection, then tempted gourmand lovers everywhere with their delicious cocoa line, and now Maison Tahité returns to wake us up with four new scents inspired by the various facets of coffee:

Best coffee perfumes

Velvet Coffee (Delphine Lebeau): gourmand, milky and voluptuous, with sandalwood, cocoa, and cardamom

Coffee Bomb (Arturetto Landi): spicy, warm, rich, and enveloping, inspired by Arabic coffee

Cafe Gourmand (Stephanie Bakouche): a creamy, dense, and delicious hazelnut coffee

And, Maison Tahité  I_Ristretto (Paul Guerlain), the tribute to the most iconic Italian coffee, and also my preferred way to drink my coffee: short, dark, strong, dense, and bitter: The Ristretto.

The history of espresso dates back to the early 20th century in Italy. At the time, coffee was typically brewed by boiling water with ground coffee beans, resulting in a beverage that was often bitter and too weak. In 1901, an Italian inventor named Luigi Bezzera developed a method for making coffee by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans using steam pressure. This resulted in a much more concentrated and flavorful coffee, and the process became known as espresso. The ristretto, which comes from the Italian word “ristretto”, meaning “restricted” refers to the smaller amount of water used in the brewing process, thus resulting in a more concentrated and intense coffee. Today, ristrettos are a popular choice for coffee connoisseurs around the world who appreciate the rich, full-bodied flavor and their ability to highlight the special characteristics of the coffee beans used. Many pages have been written about the positive effects coffee has on health, but researchers are also looking into the power of the smell of coffee alone, which seems to have similar effects to drinking the real thing. The aroma of coffee tantalizes the senses, waking up the mind and invigorating the senses. Its rich, full-bodied scent evokes memories of cozy moments and contentment, providing a sense of comfort and relaxation, and as the aroma fills the air, it can also have the power to calm the mind, reducing stress levels and anxiety.

The SCAA Coffee Taster’s Flavour Wheel

As a lover of everything coffee-related, I have searched and worn many fragrances centered on this miraculous ingredient. In my top of coffee-licious scents, the first that come to my mind are: Akro Awake with its gourmand-ish take on a cup of heavenly dark coffee, Kerosene Follow that feels like submerging your soul into a bag of freshly roasted Arabica, DSH Cafe Noire with its rich and warm eyes half closed seductive gaze, the mystical Xerjoff’s Golden Dallah or the light-hearted Terra Mia from Carthusia.

Iris is a note in perfumery with which I had a very complicated relationship – that is until I fell under its spell and smitten I’ve remained ever since. I wrote more about my awakening into iris here, with L’attesa from Masque Milano, and I stand by the very special type of light that iris lights up in my mind – a certain type of lavish nostalgia with all the ghostly glamourous emotional baggage and faux memories it drags along.

Film Noir

Maison Tahité  I_Ristretto is the best of both scented worlds. The top notes do not play around, and gets to the point quickly as does a highly concentrated, heavy-bodied shot of intense coffee flavor. It’s a thick, creamy, bitter coffee shot that wears on the skin like some interpretation of freshly grounded dark heaven, the bitter complex Arabica kind. The bitterness is further played on with an earthy and powdery veil of iris mixed with violets,  and a dusty mysterious dark patchouli backdrop that adds extra layers of contrast.

Sensual but restrained, alluring and tempting, Maison Tahité  I_Ristretto is a mysterious, dark, rich perfume with just a hint of danger lurking between the notes. It made me feel like I’m a film noir heroine, dressed in a tailored plaid suit, drinking a cup of coffee, and plotting seduction. Having just cut my bangs, it was easy to channel my inner Phyllis Dietrichson, cup of coffee in her hand, left eyebrow raised, deadly smile activated.

Beautifully balanced, dry, bitter, complex, and smooth, Ristretto from Maison Tahite is yet another reason to fall in love with coffee.

Top notes: Coffee Absolute Arabica, Pink Pepper CO2; Heart notes: Iris concrete, Violet Accord; Base notes: Patchouli Oil Indonésie, Cashmeran.

  • A ristretto scent sounds tempting. A like Akro Awake a lot, but still thought it should be more stripped down. Could this be it? I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

That said, I hope for a tea collection next from Maison Mahité!

  • Taleofarose says:

Although I am a coffee drinker I rarely enjoy its scent on my skin. Maybe it reminds it of bronzers from the 90s.
Nevertheless Nicoleta’s notes makes me rethink my relationship with coffee-centric perfumes. She had a way with words, they create desire.

I live in Portugal, and it would be awesome if I get to try Maison Tahité

  • I don’t drink my coffee in any other way than moka-brewed, and it seems like I_Ristretto has managed to capture that body, flavor and robustness perfectly. I believe that is the most “virgin” kind of coffee one could hope to find and therefore, very difficult to recreate in perfumery, since it lacks so many of the complementary notes, like cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla and those other sweetening scents.
I would love to see what Maison Tahité managed to come up with when it comes to pure, dark coffee.
    From the EU.

  • This article is everything! I really enjoy coffee in all its ways and have admiration for italian way of doing it. Love the historical backround. This Sounds Like a dream to try, and I have to find a coffee inspired perfume for myself for sure. Thanks for the giveaway, im from EU

  • Ooh, I completely share Nicoleta‘s love of L’attesa so I am so intrigued to see how such an iris would figure alongside a coffee note (the patch for depth sounds so great.) I’m a US reader.

  • The unique, fascinating and absolutely beautiful notes of this fragrance spark my interest. This harmonically composed piece of art must smell magically. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Love Nicoleta’s review. I’m a fan of coffee scent. Arko Awake I did sample. I would like Maison Tahite I Ristretto thank you for this Chance USA

  • As someone who doesn’t drink coffee, I never like the taste but love the smell.
I-Ristretto sounds fabulous and love the background on its invention
    Eu

  • What I appeal led to me in Nicoleta’s story is that this is resembling with Golden Dallah which I adore. I am interested winning a bottle of Maison Tahité I_Ristretto
    I am from USA
    Thank you

  • I am excited by Maison Tahité I_Ristretto as it pays tribute to Italian coffee culture. It is also a relatively dark composition with mysterious vibe. I am in US.

  • I love coffee, but sadly can’t have it as much as I would like, for health reasons. I can have as much coffee as I want in fragrances though. I got very interested in I_Ristretto, as it’s a dry, bitter coffee scent. I’m not a fan of sweet coffee in perfumery or as a drink. And I’m super curious about the plantable card.

  • I don’t think I’ve sampled a coffee based fragrance that uses the ristretto style as inspiration. Most of the fragrances I’ve tried were definite gourmands with a sweet vanilla, caramel or creamy component. I like the bitterness of this coffee note paired with the earthiness of the iris and patchouli. It sounds like a fragrance for espresso lovers of which I’m definitely one, MD, USA.

  • The coffee note sounds incredible in this winter season, especially the bitterness of the coffee in the scent. From TX, USA.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

Just like Nicoleta, I’m a huge, huge lover of everything coffee-related and searching for the perfect gourmet fragrance with coffee notes.
I love the way she describes the opening as a thick, creamy, bitter coffee shot that wears on the skin like some interpretation of freshly grounded dark heaven. Now that sounds delicious!
    Hugs from Croatia, EU.

  • Nice review Nicoletta! What a surprise to know that Maison Tahite launched a coffee collection after the vanilla and cocoa. I love Sel_Vanille (mixing sea salt with vanilla clouds was so great) and as a coffee lover I am very interested in the new launches. I love Cortile by Masque Milano who mixes jasmine and other florals with coffee. Ristretto opens straight to the point: Coffee Absolute Arabica to give us the creamy bitterness of the ristretto beverage (even though the good coffee beans shoudn´t be bitter). Then layers of the earthy and powdery violet and iris play to finish with dark patchouli to round a beautiful dry, dark and creamy cup of coffee. I live in Spain, EU.

  • A ristretto scent sounds intriguing. I always love the smell of coffee, is that because I love drinking coffee in the morning. How will it hold up during the day and will I love that smell in the evening as well? Really love to try this! Thank you so much for the draw!

    Living in the EU

  • From EU. I am drawing my interest in coffee smell in perfume from my rediscovery of drinking ground coffee with real caffeine lately, rather than the instant blends that I drank before.
I also like the bottle, this “medicinal” style.

  • I am also a lover of anything coffee related. I would love to experiense Maison Tahité I_Ristretto and fall in love with another rich fragrance. From EU.

  • I love Maison Tahite, this house delivers onest delightful gurmands, from I Ristretto i expect some revigorating contrast and depth. Thanks Nicoleta for another fragrant journey, from Romania with love!

  • The blend of coffee, Iris and violet notes are calling my name. I enjoyed reading about all of the other coffee centered fragrances from Maison Tahite. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • I love coffee fragrances and the article makes this sound very interesting. “Sensual but restrained, alluring and tempting, Maison Tahité I_Ristretto is a mysterious, dark, rich perfume with just a hint of danger lurking between the notes.” I would surly wear this. New Jersey, USA

  • Cherylle Oroncillo says:

The coffee notes is what makes me want this perfume. To me, it is sexy, complex and intoxicating. I live in 1406 Madison Ct., Merced, CA 95348

  • I’m intrigued by the combination of coffee and iris! I think the idea of these two notes combined does conjure up film noir images. I’m in the USA.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

I have fallen time and time agin for the fabulous forays into individual facets of a certain note, how fascinating the Vanille and Cacao collections are, delving deeper and deeper into a submerged territory and teasing out personalities. Here with coffee, Maison Tahite have done the very same, I am addicted to coffee so a ristretto would go down very nicely, thank you.
Nicoleta has whetted my appetite for a glorious cafe in a city swathed in history.

    I live in France

  • USA. Michael says:

I love coffee based fragrances & rare for me to find one that sounds this darn good! I live in Boston, Massachusetts usa.

  • A coffee scent! Oh boy, do I need one of those in my collection. I am in love with the scent of coffee, and this sounds lovely. Nicoleta has such a way with words, and won me over instantly. Thanks for this giveaway!

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • I love their attention to detail and care for our fragile planet, down to the glue used!
I have yet to be so lucky as to smell a Maison Tahite creation although I am beyond ready to!
The scent of coffee is always so uplifting at just the right times. Nothing else compares. It’s the citrus of the winter. The vetiver of the morning!
I’m keen to try this. In USA

  • Thank you Nicoleta! I had a perfect moment reading your review while sipping my coffee. I had no idee that ‘researchers are also looking into the power of the smell of coffee alone, which seems to have similar effects to drinking the real thing.’ Perhaps in the future we will walk into a coffee shop and ask for an espresso spritz or a cappuccino mist 🙂
Maison Tahite I_Ristretto seems like a great dry and bitter perfume, embodying coffee and iris.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Andrada Ghira says:

Oh, well, so that’s why I feel amazing chasing history through Italian cities! One of my dearest memory from Italy is related to the smell of coffee through the old streets together with the sound of the cups touching the small plates. I’ve taken a sniff of Awake’s coffee and didn’t convince me so much, so I’m curious about this one. I live in Bucharest, Romania.

  • I was not a fan of coffee (the drink mostly), but in the past years I’ve come around to really enjoying a good flat white. And the smell…I love it now. What I like about I Ristretto is the pairing with iris, a recent love of mine. I could see coffee and iris resulting in magic!
    I’m in the EU.

  • This house has some interesting takes on a few things I love like coffee, cocoa and vanilla. I hope I will be getting to test them soon, perhaps next month I will order some samples as I want to see first hand what you guys experience with their creations.
I am in Europe. Thank you

  • I love coffee in perfumes but I find a lot of coffee perfumes too gourmand. Nicoleta’s description of I_Ristretto’s balanced, dry bitterness makes me feel like this is one I would enjoy! I would love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Come on guys …. I’m trying to tone down the caffeine.
Maison Tahite I_Ristretto sounds so nice , quality ristretto fragrance, with sensual iris.
I wad looking for a new coffee fragrance, and now I_Ristretto is absolutely one of the contenders.
With all the , you’re almost enticed me to buy a cup of ristretto in my lunch break 🙂
Cacao In The Sun is cozy, sweet and inviting tropical-fruity-chocolate experience , and I bought the fragrance after reading Olya Bar review.
Also L’attesa is the best Masque Milano . Buttery and creamy iris fragrance I own , Nicoleta mentioning the beauty makes me even more enthusiastic about I_Ristretto
    Thanks for the draw

  • This is a perfect scent for me as there is no greater coffee lover than me!
Based on Nicoleta’s review, I like that I_Ristretto is beautifully balanced, dry, bitter, complex and smooth, sensual but restrained, alluring and tempting, dark, rich perfume with just a hint of danger lurking between the notes.

  • The facts stated by Nicoleta, about the origin of espresso are highly debatable. Most traditional culinary , and barista schools believe Angelo Moriondo is the inventor of the first, know at least , espresso machine , even though steam driven coffee machines were available from the 18th , some even believe 17th century. Luigi Bezzera took A LOT of inspiration from Angelo Moriondo work, and made a few important improvements, just saying….

“…. refers to the smaller amount of water used in the brewing process, thus resulting in a more concentrated and intense coffee.”

There are more differences between espresso and ristretto , the balance, the flavor, extraction time , aftertaste…
Also something important, the flavor of the ristretto is more intense, but as a whole the espresso is stronger than ristretto, because of the higher amount of caffeine.
Nicoleta take on I_Ristretto made me think of making the trendy Chocolate Cheesecake with Double Shot Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Ristretto , and sitting in the middle of a iris field.
Akro Awake, Kerosene Follow and Xerjoff Golden Dallah are great, Masque Milano L’attesa is really good too .
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Maison Tahité’s four-fragrance lineup is an interesting take on coffee fragrances—acknowledging that decadent cream-spiked coffee is different than black coffee, which is different than spiced coffee drinks. I_Ristretto is the most intriguing to me because sharp, bitter, dark-roasted coffee is harder to come by in fragrance, and can be an overwhelming smell in high concentrations outside of a steaming mug. The combination of thick, complex coffee with earthy iris and violet is clever, and a clever match to patchouli’s sometimes chocolaty facets. I_Ristretto sounds absolutely fantastic and I’d love to try it. Thanks for the review, Nicoleta.

I’m in the midwest, USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’m intrigued by the bitterness Nicoleta got from this fragrance, on the one hand it seems a no-brainer that a Ristretto-inspired perfume would lean in that direction, but most of the coffee-heavy perfumes I have tried leaned more into the mocha or latte aspects! I also appreciate that Maison Tahite uses recycled and recyclable packaging. I’m in the USA, thanks for the draw.

  • Sérgio Rodrigo Alves Teixeira says:

Wow. Nicoleta’s review of I_Ristretto was so vivid that, as a coffee addict, I could almost taste the roasted Arabica, which is undoubtedly what gives me the wake-up kick I need to emerge from a deep sleep in the morning.
    I Live in Lisbon Portugal

  • I enjoyed reading Nicoleta’s review of I_Ristretto along with the history of espresso and ristretto. I am interested in I_Ristretto because I have never tried a coffee based perfume. I am not even sure if smell of coffee on oneself would smell appealing but mixed with other notes it could conjure up a feeling of hard working, sophisticated, Mad Men type of vibe. Hence I am quite curious about I_Ristretto. No experience with this brand, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • A frgrance that makes you feel like a film noir heroine, you say? Well, color me intrigued. Thank you, Nocoleta, for painting such a vivid image in my mind as I read your description of this fragrance. I love the idea of iris playing with coffe – the soft powdery facets working in tandem with the bitter smoothness. Sounds lovely. I live in the USA.

  • Nicoleta really delivered a great review here. I love Maison Tahite and surely this new I_Ristretto fragrance is a gem.
I am a hugae fan of coffee and coffee based fragrances and I am sure I am gonna love this one. The iris surely adds to make it more special, a masterpiece of fragrance.
I hope I try it soon.
    USA here.

  • What an incredible review of this mysterious fragrance! I am incredibly intrigued because I have no idea what a combination of coffee and violet would smell like together. This sounds like a very unique perfume and I’d love to try it. And I absolutely love this description at the end of the article – “It made me feel like I’m a film noir heroine, dressed in a tailored plaid suit, drinking a cup of coffee, and plotting seduction. Having just cut my bangs, it was easy to channel my inner Phyllis Dietrichson, cup of coffee in her hand, left eyebrow raised, deadly smile activated.”

I’ve never had the pleasure of trying anything from this fragrance house so I’d be delighted to win it!

    I live in the USA.

  • Coffee, violet and iris – some of my favorite notes. You don’t see them everyday together in a perfume. I am quite curios about this one from Maison Tahite. Thanks for the draw and the review!

  • wallygator88 says:

    Thanks for the great review.

I love the scent of coffee and it’s hard to come by well executed coffee scents. I do enjoy Xerjoff’s Golden Dallah a lot, that is a fantastic scent.

The sensual nature of this ristretto scent took me by surprise. I do like the use of iris concrete and violet to bring this nature out.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • wandering_nose says:

I love Nicoleta’s story about her love for coffee, the informative part tackling the positive aspects of the coffee aroma (and I can attest to that – I have noticed decades ago that smelling coffee works in pretty much the same way on me as drinking it does), and finally, building a mental bridge in readers’ minds between the irresistible character played masterfully by Barbara Stanwyck and the seductive charms of I_Ristretto. The notes used are simply disarming hands down. I love the addition of patchouli, “dusty, mysterious and dark”, am sure a couple of sprays of this beauty would set me for a good day. Thank you from the EU

  • I don’t have a coffee perfume, and Maison Tahité I_Ristretto sounds like it would be a good entryway: with violet, iris, and patchouli, it wouldn’t be overwhelmingly gourmand. Thanks for an interesting review of a perfume a little outside my usual interests, I’d love to win!
    I live in WV, USA

  • Christos GX says:

As a gourmand fragrance and coffee lover, this perticular one is for me. All the description of the fragrance is amazing in the review, but the thing that sparks my interest is that it is a coffee fragrance, the name is Ristretto, so i immediatley imagine how it would smell, i do not need anything else. I live in Greece,Europe.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparked my nterest based on Nicoleta’s review of I_Ristretto is that I love the note of coffee in fragrances and that I’ve never tried any fragrances from Maison Tahite. I loved learning about the brands gourmand line of fragrances and now this new line of coffee based fragrances. I loved learning about the history espresso and how this strong bitter Ristretto Espresso note is utilized in this fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m interested to see what the coffee, patchouli, and iris/violets are like in this fragrance. I appreciate this company’s environmentalism. I’m interested to see if I agree with Nicoleta when she describes this fragrance as “beautifully balanced, dry, bitter, complex, and smooth”. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I have a personal connection to coffee, my partner works for one of the top roasters in the country. They make beautiful coffee, although not in the italian style (much lighter roasts). Ive not smelled anything coffee related except black opium, but i didnt find that much of a coffee note in there. I own vanillade by maison tahiti and have been really wanting to try other scents from them as they are affordable and very luxurious. Hard to find sometimes! Im not sure if this perfume would be a love from my partner or if hed think i smelled like work, but id love to experience it! I love the layers you lined out in your review, specifically, i love when violet is involved but not front and center in a fragrance. Too sweet alone but intermixed with deeper facets, chefs kiss. Anyway! I live in bellingham, wa.

  • foreverscents says:

I loved the Double Indemnity reference. Sensual and alluring, indeed. I had to quit drinking coffee 2 years ago. Oh, how I miss it. I think wearing a fragrance like I_Ristretto would help me to recall the mornings when I would brew strong cup to start the day.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’m a coffee connoisseur , and a snob , and I’d like to clear up one, actually quite popular misconception about ristretto . If you count ml/oz vs ml/oz only , ristretto is stronger than espresso, BUT in total in one cup of ristretto there’s less caffeine, and technically the espresso is stronger.
Thick is fine, but for the record ristretto should not be really bitter, but slightly sweeter ,less acidic with dark chocolate nuances.
I still haven’t smelled the new Maison Tahite coffee fragrances, but I know all from the Vanilla, and the Cacao Collections, and i like all , but one .
If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Vicious Cacao
    2. Cacao 2
    3. Vanextasy
I think I_Ristretto is comforting coffee fragrance with iris , and patchouli, well suited for the season concoction.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
