My Velouria
“Velouria” by The Pixies

Album cover art 1990 via wikipedia

Guitars like raw nerves, exposed and jangled, distort as a beat comes in a repetitive wave. A voice, genderless but aware and sweet like an aging choirboy, skims the riff, a windswept boat sailing into calm. But a certain weirdness hangs about the edges of the song as the lyrics reference the “shine of the ever” and we know we’re in another here, one with lemur skin reflecting on the sea that is forevergreen. Maher Olfactive Velouria is artisan perfumer Shawn Maher’s evocation of the alt rock ballad of the same name by the Pixies. The song’s fantastical lyrics and its juxtaposition of “raw, crunchy guitars” and “smooth, angelic vocals” provide the frame for Maher’s similarly chimerical fragrance.

With its strange, contrasting accords of sweet, candied violet and turbulent vetiver, Velouria feels like something from the pages of a Phillip Pullman novel. From its first moments until drydown, Velouria is arrestingly, strangely enticing, one of those perfumes that draws you in, then pushes you away, then draws you in deeper. The opening is like a quick flash of crackling bright light, the scent equivalent of the way a central stage spotlight breaks the dim when after the lights go down and the band is playing its first chord. The composition is an interplay between moody, petrol-y green and wood notes that stand in for the edgy darkness of the song’s staccato hook and the cloudy orris and rainwater candy violet that parallel the lyric’s searching romanticism.

On first spray, there’s a huge puff of face powder and a bushel of dark violet punctuated by brash, turpenic sharpness. A smooth, polished wood note I initially mistook for sandalwood, but which turns out to be frankincense, fills in the top. It provides a foundation for the orris-violet to stand out against as it finds its place in the perfume’s melody. In trying to find the right introductory note for the perfume’s top, Maher ultimately landed on turpenic Somali frankincense. Coupled with the innocent, fruity-green scent of blueberry (why isn’t my favourite fruit’s aroma used more often in perfumery, I wonder?), the incense both piques and bridges the sweet violet-orris accord that represent the echoey, Byrds-like vocals of the verses.

Frankincense is also the heart of Maher Olfactive Velouria, providing a spectrum of aromas that recede and push forward at unexpected times. In the perfume’s first stage, the incense’s turpenic characteristics add the brightness that Maher was looking for to elicit the hard twang of Velouria’s escalating initial guitar riff.  The grassy greenness of Indian vetiver adds twang. Partnered smoky Javanese vetiver, the two rooty notes gives the perfume its dark, woolly texture. At this point, Velouria smells like one of those dislocating dreams about searching without knowing what you are looking for: hypnotic, ebbing and flowing between light and dark, soaring and furrowing. But just wait for the drydown.

As Velouria settles, Maher brings the notes together in harmony: the sad, violet-orris sweetness and caliginous vetivers merge with the  frankincense, the woods grow sleepy, and a deliciously animalic musk wraps the whole thing up in a sweaty, rock n-roll bow. This is one of the most unique fragrances of the year so far, and perhaps Maher’s most daring since his brilliant Weinstrasse for his brand Chatillon Luxe.

Notes: Candied violet, orris, blueberry, frankincense Frerena, Indian vetiver, Javanese vetiver, musk.

Disclaimer: Sample of Maher Olfactive Velouria kindly sent to me by Shawn Maher. My opinions, as always, are my own.

  • I had a sample to try recently and I love the evocation presented as “one with lemur skin reflecting on the sea that is forevergreen.” It is an unusual but wearable scent that I hope to own a full bottle of.

  • This is actually a scent I’ve been curious about for some time, so I’m very glad to see it reviewed! Lauryn’s description feels as poetic as the perfume’s inspiration.
The push and pull between sweet and smoky sounds especially interesting to me! I hope to be able to grab a sample of it soon :•)

  • As a fan of anything incense, I’m drawn to this fragrance. Paired with blueberry and candied violets Velouria sounds delicious. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

Hello from Florida, and thanks to Lauryn for the review! Blueberry can be so fresh and evocative as a note — I wish I saw it in more fragrances. Velouria sounds quite dreamy.

  • I’m a Pixies fan, and I love powdery perfumes. This sounds like a perfect match for me. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • FragranceIsMe says:

The Pixies, A Candied Violet, Orris, and Frankincense. You’ve caught my attention.
Like the song, it appears this fragrance is pulling together light and dark notes to create a harmonious creation. I’m looking forward to getting my nose on this fragrance.

  • Great review by the one and only Lauryn!
Maher Olfactive seems like a very interesting niche house, I really want to givea them a try.
Velouria is something I didn’t know I need in my collection. I love that frankinciense is the main note here and that blueberry is used also. I would love to win this one.

I love this- perfumes inspired by music are some of my most admired. The Pixies are one of those epic bands that combine beautiful melodies with a sort of brashness that says here I am, I dare you to love me. Hey! is one of my favorite Pixie songs and I say Velouria, been trying to meet you. With frankincense, violets, blueberries, and vetiver, you have my attention. I love the part of Lauryn’s review where she mentions the darkness of the stage as the spotlight appears and the first chord of the show is played. That excitement is like no other. Thanks for the chance to win a bottle.

  • Oh my, this sounds absolutely fantastic. All of the juxtapositions – florals vs. woods, sweet vs. sour, pull vs. push. I love a fragrance that pushes you to the point of confusion, but at the same time makes sense. Velouria seems to be just that. I am a huge fan of frankincense and orris, especilally when they are used together, so this sounds great to me. I’m eager to see how the smokey vetivers in here are complimented by the incense. Lauryn said this is one of Shawn’s most daring fragrances in a while. I certainly hope to find out! I live in NC, USA.

  • What struck me was this, “This is one of the most unique fragrances of the year so far, and perhaps Maher’s most daring since his brilliant Weinstrasse for his brand Chatillon Luxe.”. US

  • Candied violet and vetiver sound really interesting togther and I love music-inspired themes for perfumes. I’m in the USA.

I remember seeing the Pixies play in the 1980s. maybe 1985? I remember the crashing guitars and the sonic melodies. I love the way Shawn Maher is inspired by music for his Maher Olfactive creations. It’s thrilling to experience the notes he uses to evoke the guitar riffs. I love violet and vetiver, so I know I will love Velouria.

Frankincense and blueberry sound like a really interesting combo. “hypnotic, ebbing and flowing between light and dark, soaring and furrowing.” This whole fragrance sounds interesting and I’d love to try it. New Jersey, USA

  • I love Lauryn Beer review of Velouria , and the way she told us about this one of a kind fragrance with sweet, candied violet and turbulent vetiver.
I’m extra curios about the different stages of the fragrance , especially the woody incense, berries and the sweet violet-iris accords.
Velouria sound fantastic , artistic fragrance i’d love to have.
I don’t know Maher Olfactive, but let the journey begin with Velouria guitar riffs
    Thanks for the draw

For a while now, I’ve been interested to try a fragrance made by perfumer Shawn Maher, but I haven’t had chance to yet. I’m very interested to try “Velouria” for multiple reasons, e.g. I love frankincense, and it seems to be one of the main notes in it. I’m interested to try a fragrance which has blueberry in it. I’ve heard that when patchouli is refined a certain way, then it can smell like blueberry. I wonder if the blueberry in this fragrance is actually patchouli. I hope that I win. I live in the U.S.A.

Thank you for the review, Lauryn!
This one sounds like it would be a really nice fit for me.
I love the idea of the candied violet in this one taking a dance with vetiver, orris, AND blueberry (Yum!).

Velouria a fragrance for all adventurous people who know what they want in life . Incense with candied violet and vetiver, I’m in. I also like the optimism coming from Shawn Maher , just look at the 3th picture , noting fake in is smile there
Haven’t seen Maher Olfactive in any boutique , or sampled the brand yet

I’ve been a fan of Shawn Maher ever since I had an opportunity to try Sun Soaked. He is a master at constructing fragrances using unexpected materials. Velouria (love the name!) sounds cool and dark (and purple) with its orris-violet-blueberry blend, vetiver and musk. Lauryn’s review selecting it as one of the most unique fragrances of the year and one of Shawn’s most daring has be excited to try it. MD, USA.

I’ll have to admit I’ve never heard of The Pixies before, but Maher Olfactive i’m familiar with , well to be fair I’m familiar with 10 out of 13 fragrances , Sagan Dalya , Red Skies and Velouria I still need to try .I also know the sister company Chatillon Lux .
If I have to rate my favorite Maher Olfactive fragrances :
    1. Barrel-Aged Treachery (limited edition currently out of stock)
    2.Treachery/Tempo Rubato
    3. Nefertiti
Other than fragrances , and boats , I guess Sean loves rock music too. Traditionally for all Maher Olfactive fragrances, Velouria continues with the brand artistic concept. Dislocated dream with iris, vetiver incense and a bit of funky feeling.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg

  • Thanks for the review. Love the part about unique and daring. Everything still is a knockoff of another fragrance or similar to something else.

I like it when these houses take a chance. It’s the only way to distinguish yourself from others.

Anything that lands a beautiful frankincense has to be amazing AND violets at the top. Cannot wait to smell this.

  • roxhas1cat says:

This sounds so different than anything I’ve experienced. Blueberries, violets and a “twang” of vetiver. These are some of my favorite notes which I’ve not really seen combined. Actually blueberry is something I haven’t experienced in fragrance, but love to eat. I love unique fragrances, especially when they are brought together is harmony at the end. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Terrific review, Lauryn. I’ve been looking forward to ÇaFleureBon’s coverage of Shawn’s new fragrance, which I can’t wait to try. I’ve been a fan of the Pixies for years; I kept a Black Francis poster on my wall well after band-posters stopped fitting the vibe of my apartment, and “Velouria” is one of my all-time favorites. As far as I can tell, bold blueberry notes are underutilized in perfumery, and the idea of layering blueberry with sweet violet and raspy vetiver is really clever. I’m also happy to read that the frankincense is easy to pick up here; it sounds like it is an excellent pairing with the other aspects of this fragrance and an incense note I absolutely love. Velouria sounds like a trip.

    I’m in the midwest, U.S.

  • Outstanding review by Lauryn of Maher Velouria. What strikes my interest in fragrance discovery is that it’s described as the most unique of the year so far. A very daring creation that is hypnotic and dream like. Brilliant. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! Greetings from the USA.

Lauryn Beer take on Velouria made me think of visiting some open air rock festival , where eating made by me early on Candied Violets Cupcakes, with White Chocolate. Having fun with rock music, Candied Violets Cupcakes and a few sprays of Velouria is the experience I’m looking for .
I own Treachery , to me smells similar to Chocolate Ganache Cake with Wiskey and Raspberries i do on private orders only at my bakery.

Wow1 This review and perfume truly blew me away!
I love how Lauryn was able to truly connect each of the notes and the cascading elements of the perfume coming in and out of focus with how the structure of the Pixie’s song. I love the notes of vetiver and frankincense together. I loved reading about how the violet and Oriss combo reminded Lauryn of the vocals in the verses. Overall, it’s so exciting to have perfume inspired by one of my favorite bands and guitar driven music. I think that’s so exciting and would love to try this composition by the house of Maher Olfactive, which I wasn’t aware of before reading Lauryn’s review.

Thanks for the great review Lauryn.

This is quite an interesting fragrance, by the sound of it with so many movements and contrasts. I love the use of frankincense both as a bridge and as a top note in it – the wonderful terpenic lemony incensey qualities of the resin are such a good way to deal with the fruitiness of the blueberry and respberry ketone that was used.

I’m also enjoying the use of the different kinds of vetiver in this fragrance, both in a contrasting and complementary manner.

I would love to try this fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’ve long been a fan of violet and iris, but the accord in Velouria sounds amazing. I’ve yet to try anything by Maher Olfactive, and I am really curious about this perfume house.

And who doesn’t love The Pixies? “Velouria” is one of their best! I personally have a huge soft spot for “Where is my mind?”

What really stuck out to me in Lauryn’s review was the description of a moody petrol-y green in Velouria‘s composition. I can see how this can push someone away as described by Lauryn, but personally I actually kinda enjoy the scent if I catch a slight whiff while fueling my car or something. Would love to smell this fragrance in action.

I like how Lauren described Velouria, like dislocated dream flowing between light and dark
