Maher Olfactive Sun Soaked Review (Shawn Maher) 2021+ Opulent Optimism Draw

St. Louis-based artisanal perfumer Shawn Maher continually delights us with his singular creative approach to perfumery. He heralds the blossoming seasons which inspired him to compose a lilting fragrance – one which fairly dances with unbridled optimism, yet manages to shy away from the superficial. This is frankly no mean feat because, in addition – if Shawn creates a scent there has to be a novel, unanticipated aspect to it. He relishes chiaroscuro, contrast – and this is admirably demonstrated in his soon-to-be-released Maher Olfactive Sun Soaked.

Sun Soaked is shot through with the warmth of sunlight streaming through a clerestory cathedral window, infusing illumination everywhere it makes contact. These majestic windows are located well above eye level, a common feature in Roman basilicas, Romanesque and Gothic churches; not only intended for greater light, their purpose was also to provide fresh air. Their lineage goes as far back as ancient Egypt and King Solomon’s temple, by biblical accounts. The images which appeared before me as I sprayed my sample summoned the holy light and a paradisaical natural setting in tandem.

Maher Olfactive Sun Soaked spirals around all things orange: blossom, leaf, bigarade, even the aldehyde (C10 is a particularly sweet, fatty and floral with an orange peel feel). Orange is not alone, however; her intoxicating loveliness is augmented by an indolic narcissus absolute and exquisitely quirky cassis notes. Fruitiness wends its way among the flowers on several levels and helps counterbalance the animalic: Cassifix®, for example, tempers black currant’s sulfuric nature, because it’s sweetly fruity and green and has none. Rhubofix® adds complementary woody floral spice tones which are zesty and reminiscent of rhubarb; Apritone, in contrast – is a very jammy apricot which is chummy with all of the above. Apple’s persona pops up in a particularly fruity chamomile and a component from fruitier roses, damascone alpha. Along comes Vetikone®, with its fascinating almost tropical feel: sulfuric grapefruit peel, honey, gardenia and verdant roots; it finds fellow exoticism in tamarind’s sweet/sour/spiciness. The complexity of this aromatic give-and-take is dizzying if one tries to analyze it.

Shawn’s beautiful base is similarly intricate and spans the woody/sweet spicy/leathery/musky deftly seasoned with a pinch (no more) of incensey elements and a smattering of beeswax absolute for rounded sunny sweetness. What I particularly enjoy is the lack of scratchiness one frequently encounters in the woody/musky realm. Despite an ample dose of labdanum (I love it) and potentially heavy-hitting materials, there is a downy quality to this substantive underpinning. Any one of the elements is all too easy to overdose, with resultant heaviness and olfactory clamor – much like people shouting over one another in a crowded bar in order to be heard. Sun Soaked is both highly unusual and wearable as it takes you on a journey (the way I believe fine fragrance should).

Shawn Maher has manifested a fragrant equilibrium in Maher Olfactive Sun Soaked: sweet, sour, bitter, narcotic, grassy, fruity, floral; woods baring teeth tantalizingly. And all of them bathed in a glowing diaphanous light, redolent of opulent optimism.

Notes: aldehyde C10, Egyptian neroli, bitter orange petitgrain essential oil, neryl acetate, Rhubofix® (Firmenich), Corps Oranger® (Symrise), narcissus absolute, tamarind, Apritone (Bedoukian), Vetikone® (Symrise), black currant bud absolute, Cassifix® (IFF), damascone alpha, chamomile absolute, cypriol, Texas cedar, amber accord (labdanum, ethyl vanillin, olibanum, elemi, Iso E Super® (IFF), Habanolide® (Firmenich), ambrettolide, beeswax absolute)

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks, Shawn!  My nose is my own…

Ida’s review about Sun Soaked is amazing: sweet, sour, bitter, narcotic, grassy, fruity, floral with narcisum all of them bathed in a glowing diaphanous light, redolent of opulent optimism.
I’m already in love with this perfume

  • I’m ready for opulent fragrant optimism. This sounds perfect for the heat and humidity of summers in Virginia. I live in USA.

  • lillian33 says:

“Opulent optimism,”… hmm this one piques my interest. What creaminess I envision. I am very much a fan of black currant. I think I would enjoy. Thanks for the giveaway! Cheers from the U.S.

  • I am very much enjoying sun as a fragrance theme over the past couple of days! I loved the description of Sun Soaked as a fragrance that mimics sun rays that shine through the windows of Roman churches and cathedrals. And, I do love orange as a note in its multiple forms (blossom, bigarade, even aldehydes!), so I am definitely drawn to this along with other creations from the brand. I haven’t had a chance to try any yet. I am in the USA.

Thank you for the beautiful review Ida!

I love how your review is so true to Shawn’s talent as a perfumer. I’ve smelt a lot of his perfumes and all of them are characterized by the use of materials that can easily overpower but is done with a gentle hand.

I love how your review talks about Sun Soaked as a warm beam of of sunlight through a cathedral window. I love how the play of fruitiness and citrus creates the effect of warm and radiant citrus. It’s also nice to see all the aromachemicals that were used in creating the fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a beautiful and rare ingredients are presented in this perfume- just AMAZING. I am very intrigued by this description. It seems to me very opulent perfume. and it is perfect that with this complexity it has “optimistic mood”.

  • This scent sounds amazing! I love everything orange and orange blossom, and the base sounds so good as well. Ida has a real way with words, and I could smell the scent with my mind’s nose.

Sun Soaked by Maher Olfactive has a lot going on. One thing that stands out is the tropical feel comment. I would love to have the chance to try this out.

  • I found Ida’s review of this Shawn Maher fragrance to be informative and it is a reason why I definitely want to try this fragrance. I appreciated learning about all of the ingredients which are in this fragrance. I learned about, at least, a few new (to me) ingredients which are used in perfumery. This fragrance seems like there is a lot to it. I’ve heard of Maher Olfactive but I haven’t tried any of his releases yet. I live in MD., U.S.A.

Lovely review! Shawn Maher is a very interesting perfumer and Sun Soaked does sound great and very interesting. Just looking at the notes I would not draw a parallel with a sunlight streaming through a clerestory cathedral window. Probably because I don’t associate florals with this kind of setting. But that intro in Ida’s review led me to imagine this fragrance quite differently. I hope I will have a chance to try it. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I like the idea of a sweet, sour, bitter fragrance. Sun Soaked sounds so interesting with that tamarind note. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love Sean’s work and this one sounds lovely! I adore orange blossom scents mixed with green. So perfect for summer. I have many favorites from this line but, Orris Forest is one of my favorites. Thanks for the draw. US

  • I’m very interested in the orange, it sounds like a summer day. I haven’t trued any fragrances from this house. I live in Indiana USA

  • What appeals to me was the interpretation of soaking in the sun with oranges and aldehydes — just that to me, resident of the forever tropics, being sun soaked is way too close to unbearable radiation and hot asphalts. A view towards juicy produces and desirable warmth is a much nicer imaginary!

    I’m based in Thailand!

Unfortunately I haven’t had a proper visit to any of Maher Olfactive perfume, but I think I’d love Crystal Moon (hinoki and juniper!), Nefertiti (incense and cigarette smoke), Orris Forest (black pepper and oak moss!), Sun Soaked, and Treachery (cocoa, whiskey, saffron and spices!)

  • I quite enjoyed that this review delved into aroma chemicals instead of focusing purely on perceived notes. I enjoy learning more about them, so reviews like this are priceless. This sounds like a summer gem. I have not tried anything from Maher as of yet. Thank you from Canada.

  • I liked Ida’s comparison of Maher Olfactive Sun Soaked perfume to the majestic clerestory cathedral window, with a photo of the majestic cathedral in Croatia, and the opulent optimism that this perfume signifies. One has to try Shawn Maher’s creations to believe how truly beautiful perfumes can be, and to what majestic levels the art of olfaction, the art of perfumery, can aspire to. Having tried a number of his creations, I can say Sun Soaked perfume is as good as Ida says it is. I am delighting in the creamy, balanced, deep perfume of his classic Tempo Rubato as I write this, which is my absolute favorite along with Treachery, and Orris Forest, Crystal Moon, Gratiot League Square are majestic in their own right. These perfumes are deep and strong, but not at all obnoxious, being that they are so beautifully balanced. Thanks for the detailed review and a generous draw. I look forward to trying out Sun Soaked perfume, hopefully soon. I am in the USA.

  • Ida’s review pictured me a fragrant equilibrium in Maher Olfactive Sun Soaked -never tried any before, both round, light and luminous, the theme of holy light appeals to me în this Week of Light after Easter! From Romania with love!

  • What struck me first about Ida’s review is that I live in St. Louis, Missouri where the perfumer also lives! I have only recently began my deep dive in to fragrances and am especially interested in the niche and indie sides of perfumery. I have assumed that there other St. Louisans that share this passion, but this is the first time I’ve found any hard evidence. I need to check out Shawn Maher’s work ASAP!

I’ve been a reader of the blog for a short time, but I look forward to Ida’s reviews. I feel it should be nearly impossible to describe the nuance and beauty of the kinds of perfumes featured on Cafleurbon and Ida does it with such detail and grace. It’s like some sort of linguistic superpower. Sun Soaked sounds incredible!

  • This sounds like a great scent, warm, sour, bitter and ready for some sunshine. I would grant all of you a soak of the sun! Living in the EU

  • Renate Lindell Riul says:

wow . a treat to read this . takes me on a journey with all the notes and poeticly put story about light florals and the way it illuminates the darker things (cathedral) made me realy enjoy a travel and anticipation of what this could be like to smell like .

  • IvanVelikov says:

Sun Soaked ? Such an unusual name for such elaborate scent. Leather, woody, sweet , cassis… All the notes are appealing to me, it’s deep and full, so I expect fireworks.Good performance is always a plus.
I wonder why most Cafleurebon reviewers consider cassis smelling quite animalic?!?!? I’ve read such claims dozens of times here , from different people during the years.
Maybe because I’m used to both the smell, and taste of cassis , i don’t find it incredibly animalic , if at all. I drink organic cassis juice on daily basis , and actually love the smell of it too , not just the taste.
    Thanks for the giveaway

Thank you , Gracias, for an amazing review Ida! Your review introduces us to Mr. Maher´s talent as a perfumer and open our senses to “Opulent optimism,”. It is all about capturing the essence of an orange tree augmented by narcissus indoles, and an artful use of not so common molecules( Cassifix,Rhubofix, Apritone, Vetikone…) but the complexity of this scent is in a fragrant equilibrium. Kudos to Shawn! I tried Crystal Moon that is an amazing osmanthus fragrance too. I live in Spain, EU.

  • I almost squealed, this perfume sounds heavenly. It’s just what I have been searching for a long time now. Sunny but grown up. I loved Ida’s presentation, the juxtaposition of holy light and paradisaical settings. Moreover, I am psyched that new, independent perfumers are entering the game, I would much rather spend my money for people who genuinely love what they do instead of waste it on established houses run by big conglomerates. I hope I can get hold of this beauty in Europe even if I don’t win the draw! Kudos to Shawn for the creativity. Love from Greece!

  • You had me at chiaroscuro! I’m an artist and although I do not create art in that fashion, it is one of my favorite styles. I too love labdanum! This whole review was so appealing. Thank you so much for introducing me to this perfumer and scent. And especially for a chance to win. In the USA.

  • Paeonnia says:

Oh, what a wonderful review of a optimistic sounding perfume. I loved the explanations of what aspect do different aromachemicals add to the overall scent.
I don’t know any Shawn Maher scents yet.
    I’m in EU, SLovenia

  • NeroNick says:

    I love how Ida gives each of the individual ingredients their own persona to help establish the optimistic nature of the perfume as a collective. I have not had the pleasure to try this house yet, but I am optimistic that this could be my first ;
    NY USA

  • Sun soaking is just what I need. I love orangey fragrances to begin with and this sounds absolutely lovely. I adore the chiaroscuro comparison. I haven’t tried any Maher Olfactive perfumes and I am in Kansas, US.

  • Interesting review, nice photos.
It sounds a little complex with all that kind of notes but I really want to try this out.
    Love the bottle btw.
    Regards from Mexico!

  • all things orange – YES, please 🙂
I know perfume is a result of mixing chemicals, but it shocked me a bit when I’ve read Ida’s review and the notes of the frag – sun soaked made me think of a lazy summer afternoon, not at chemistry class.
Not familiar with any of Shawn’s works, but man, I’d be happy to start with this one [all things orange – YES, please! :))]
    I live in Europe.

  • GennyLeigh says:

The images Ida showed for Sun Soaked are very striking. I can remember touring some of the great cathedrals in Spain and seeing the brilliant sunlight filtering through magnificent windows. It was absolutely awe-inspiring. The focus on orange is very welcome especially for an uplifting fragrance. The liberal use of synthetics is interesting and I wonder if that helps extend the fragrance life of notoriously short-lived citrus. I do not have a favorite Maher Olfactive perfume but would love to try this! Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I like how Ida highlights the contrasts of this perfume and how it achieves a different spin on particular notes. I’m most interested in how the narcissus, citrus, and woody notes work together. I still haven’t tried a Maher Olfactive perfume, which I realize is a great deficit. I need to plot a trip to St. Louis to try them all. I live in the USA.

  • Julesinrose says:

Honestly, I ALWAYS am interested in whatever Ida reviews!! “Woods baring teeth tantalizingly?” Gotta try this one!! I haven’t tried any this line’s scents. In Maine, USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Ugh I really need to try this house! This sounds amazing! All of those fruits! This really sounds like a tribute to a sunny day. I am currently craving sun and a fruit salad. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Hi from Canada! Another great review Ida! The note combinations sound soooo nice! I also love the pictures used to evoke these springtime feelings, the Croation cathedral makes me long for travel – and the description of how the light reflect on the stained glass is lovely. Thank you for hosting a giveaway, I have not had the chance to try this house yet, so that is so wonderful!

  • What an impressive pyramid!
I know Shawn is famous for his sophisticated compositions and Sun Soaked seems to be no less!
The orange opening, the bigarade and the development into green and fruity territory and the incense-labdanum drydown, while also touching several other perfume families, sounds quite like a rollercoaster ride.
This would be my first Maher Olfactive experience.
    I live in Europe.

  • Thanks Ida for beautiful review!
I am intrigued by this rare components in this perfume. I think that all together have created very unique and dense perfume.

  • DespinaVnt says:

    Narcissus, orange, fruits, labdanum…
It all sounds magical through Ida’s words (sunlight through a cathedral window was so vivid a description!)
I especially appreciated the analysis of the synthetic notes, and their role in the composition (Shawn is a master of blending these seamlessly with his natural ingredients).
I’m still exploring my Maher Olfactive samples, but what I’ve tried, I’ve loved (Nefertiti and Orris Butter).
I’d be happy to win a bottle of Sun Soaked, thank you!
    Best from France (EU).

This scent seems remarkable! I love the scents of nature and noticing that is around me. I feel like this would smell like a day I am familiar with. I don’t have a favourite Maher Olfactive perfume yet. Canada.

  • Claumarchini says:

I am not familiar with Maher Olfactive fragrances, although I have been reading quite a bit about them recently and would love to try this new one! It seems a perfect wear for this season, to prepare us for summer and open ourselves to a bit of joy and serenity – at last! I enjoyed very much all the details about aldehydes and molecules, as I was not familiar with them, thanks Ida for the great review! Greetings from Italy

  • Barber82 says:

From St. Louis, to Egypt , or Croatia well made creative fragrances always work . Personally I’m glad there’s no copycats here , Sun Soaked is a fragrance with its own character, sweet, sour, bitter, leathery , with small doses of incense,
Thanks Ida , awesome job. Of course i have to thank Shawn Maher too .

  • Jed Or Alive says:

Ida is spot on when she describes Shawn’s perfumes as having a certain equilibrium. He has quite the talent for balancing notes that others may be hesitant to pair together. My favorite of Shawn’s creations is actually Weinstrasse under his Chatillon Lux line, but Madame Chouteau (for American Perfumer) and Crystal Moon are also wonderful. Located in California.

  • mleenstra says:

Sun Soaked sounds beautifully multifaceted. I like how Ida describes the different fragrance profiles she met on the journey that is Sun Soaked. Like Ida I’m often also put off by scratchiness of woody/musky perfumes that can appear bitter and sharp to my nose, so this sounds dreamy. Also I love a bit of bitter sourness so anything rhubarby and grapefruity I really like.
I have yet to try something from Shawn Maher. Thanks for the draw! Marit UK

  • Mo Yahia says:

Ida’s review succeeded in beautifully represent Sun Soaked! She has drawn an attractive sunny picture in my imagination about the vibe of this fragrance. Based on the notes, I liked the equilibrium in the Sun Soaked: sweet, sour, bitter, narcotic, grassy, fruity, floral; woods baring teeth tantalizingly, And all of them bathed in a glowing diaphanous light, redolent of opulent optimism. This is a wonderful balance that takes you on a journey. Regards from Bosnia.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

I like complex, different, and just a bit changing fragrances, not following trends!
Sun Soaked fits the bill perfectly with it’s dark cassis , woods and spices , added to the leather . I would be really happy to win a bottle.
Thanks to Ida , and to Shawn Maher for the opportunity

Cathedral window flowers, fruits , woods and honey, Sun Soaked is such a lively fragrance. Of course because being a Pastry Chef , and the notes I was instantly reminded of making and eating Pistachio, apricot and orange blossom cake, i do once a week at my bakery.

Maher Olfactive fragrances i’m familiar with , and i also know the sister company Chatillon Lux .
Weinstrasse by Chatillon Lux , is in my possession for a longer period of time , and influenced by Ida’s Maher Olfactive reviews I bought the sample set, and later 50ml bottle of Treachery. If I have to rate my favorite Maher Olfactive:
    1. Treachery
    2. Tempo Rubato
    3. Nefertiti
Sun Soaked was not available when I bought the sample set, so I can’t share my own thoughts. Sounds really good to me , and traditionally for all Maher Olfactive fragrances, with artistic concept.
    Thank you all

Ida’s review was helpful in understanding the proprietary (?)) accords or synthetic notes. Tamarind is under appreciated in perfume & is also a lovely tart & sweet treat, so I’d like to see how it is incorporated here – as noticeable or well blended counterbalance.

I love the promise of juxtaposition in Sun Soaked, much like the Spring here in New Jersey, when the weather is constantly at contrast with itself, one day spring is in the air with fragrant blossoms and the next day the cold grip of Winter returns to squeeze us a bit.

My favorite offering from Maher Olfactive has to be Santal Auster, a beautiful spicy, woody, and creamy sandalwood. I love the smell it leaves on my clothing.

A beautiful picture painted by Ida with words, as always. An optimistic orange-centered fragrance that is at the same time opulent, animalic and warmly inviting – this sounds like a dream come true for me. The complexity and artistry behind the composition seem to just be next level. I have not been lucky to experience Maher Olfactive perfumes as of yet. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • One of a kind leather, apricots , black currant , florals and labdamun , and a good performance. Sun Soaked sound fantastic , artistic fragrance i’d love to have.
