American artisanal perfumer Shawn Maher has successfully blazed his own trail since the inception of his first (and ongoing) fragrant endeavor, Chatillon Luxe – which began in 2015 as a skin care and shaving line intended to counteract Shawn’s native Missouri’s severe winters. His first fragrance, Gratiot League Square, released in 2016 – was an organic outcropping: spicy, leathery tobacco eau de toilette inspired by early Missouri settlers and the fur trade. Since then, Shawn’s audience has grown incrementally as his exceptional compositions continue to garner attention: in 2020’s Arts & Olfaction Awards, his glorious Weinstrasse was a Finalist in the artisan category – and in 2023, Maher Olfactive Red Skies garnered an Honorable Mention. Legato is an absolute stunner, yet another example of Shawn stretching his creative wings.

You might well ask why Shawn Maher decided to create a second line of fragrances after he has had such success with Chatillon Lux. When he branched out in 2020 into the Maher Olfactive brand (in addition to his existing brand), his goal was to create voluptuous perfumes without constraint, regardless of cost or materials. The concept was to foster his artistic instincts and grant them free rein. As a musician, Shawn had pondered the idea of Legato: a flowing, uninterrupted line of successive tones. He’d long desired to create an oud-themed perfume, but one which didn’t resemble any previous ones – which is a tall order these days. The main thrust of Legato was to allow a hand-picked combination of differing oud species inform him of the direction he should follow – much like seasoned chefs permit the ingredients they encounter to do the same. As a cook with many years’ experiences under my belt (who grew up in a multi-ethnic neighborhood), this idea makes perfect sense. It also speaks to a degree of flexibility.

Debussy/Paul Verlaine’s setting of Clair de Lune courtesy of Ida

To demonstrate the context of legato, I’ve taken a photo of my Debussy/Paul Verlaine score of Clair de Lune. Do you see the lovely smooth arc above “Au calme clair de lune triste et beau” (In the tranquil moonlight, sad and beautiful)? That arc is the musical notation depicting legato: the lyrical swelling of fluidity that creates an exquisite line. It simply melds, a seamlessness of sound. Maher Olfactive Legato aims for this mellifluous olfactory effect. Shawn describes his Cambodian oud as a very companionable one – milder than many, but rich and cocoa-inflected. His Thai oud smells less civilized to many a Western nose: wild, boisterous, intensely animalic; the Prachin oud to which he refers also hails from Thailand, but its character is a sort of bridge between the two – it’s woody, fruity, with notes of chocolate, caramel and creosol. The synergy between them called out for stone fruits in a symphonic vein – a plum accord of which the perfumer is extremely fond, and an essential oil from Robertet (what a delight!) of apricot: pure, ripe, juice-dripping flesh. Saffron does what it does brilliantly, burnishing the fruit, pulling leathery tones from the ouds, showcasing apricot in a manner somewhat resonant of osmanthus (another favorite aromatic material). Shawn describes the odor profile of white lotus as spicily floral – more similar to carnation than roselike. It is lotus which enhances the piquant aspects of oud and saffron. For increased depth and tonality, a red cedar intonation assumes the form of Virginia cedar, a scent which fills Shawn with nostalgic childhood reminiscence. Sweet, ambery with wisps of incense, its sylvan attributes blend immaculately with all components – just like that lovely rainbow arc which binds musical notes to one another to complete a flawless phrase.

Notes: plum accord, apricot essential oil (Robertet), saffron, white lotus, Thai, Cambodian and Prachin Pearl oud, Virginia cedar

I’m a fan of Maher Olfactive and Chatillon Luxe – even more so since visiting Missouri last year. So this sounds like Shawn at his best! And I’m certainly a fan of Ida’s, her musical comparison is so sensory. Would love to try this limited edition Extrait. Thank you for the opportunity, in the US.

  • The unique and absolutely beautiful notes of this fragrance strike me. I think that this combination must smell amazingly. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • From someone who’s been learning to read music and personally a big fan of oud this is absolutely amazing and would to see how this flows while playing and just being in the moment! Much love from PA USA

Thank you for your lovely review, Ida. The idea of legato sounds interesting. Look forwards to the interpretation and treatment inspired by this idea, wondering its difference compared to other creations.

Notes: plum accord, apricot essential oil (Robertet), saffron, white lotus, Thai, Cambodian and Prachin Pearl oud, Virginia cedar. A beautiful description by Ida I am particularly intrigued by the notes especially how the perfumer has balanced the ouds no mean feat. I am a big fan of oud and plum. This sounds like a magical concoction. Thanks a million from the UK

A beautiful description by Ida I am fascinated by the notes especially ouds, plum, and white lotus I am intrigued how it would smell like on skin. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • To create a symphony with different oud notes requires special talent, which Maher certainly does. I had not heard of Prachin oud from Thailand, and since I love oud, I am quite curious to try Legato. I have tried many of his creations and they are absolutely wonderful – for example, Treachery, Tempo Rubato, etc. Ida’s comparison of a perfumer to a seasoned chef is very apt. I can’t wait to attend the symphony Legato. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

plum note is my number one note in perfumery!! overture is the only music inspired scent i smelled, would love this one. im from eu

  • If I don’t win it, I may have to buy this one. Between my love of Apricots (I chose it as the name of my pet cat, believe it or not), my penchant for attars thanks to CaFleureBon’s rave reviews of Sultan Pasha’s work, and the fact that my husband and I are professional musicians, Legato would be an absolute dream to own. Thanks for this most generous draw!

I’m very intrigued to try something from Maher Olfactive, especially when Ida describes the brand as a means for perfumer Shawn Maher “to create voluptuous perfumes without constraint, regardless of cost or materials.” Ida description of each note made this fragrance seem very enticing to me. I’d like to try it. I live in the U.S.A.

  • As an enthusiast in the arts of cuisine and music, I’ve been always looking for this kind of “melody” and “roundness” in compositions. Although it doesn’t happen very often, from the hands of artisanal perfumers I’ve been truthfully delighted in the past few months. So whether I win this giveaway or not, I’m already check-in out a discovery set from Mr. Maher :-).

Also, Ida’s reviews are always so clear and enjoyable, it is always a nice read.

With the photo of the Debussy/Paul Verlaine score of “Clair de Lune” Ida brings musicality to the perfume notes of the Legato. Would love to try them on my skin.

  • Thanks for the excellent review, Ida. I follow Shawn’s work closely as he’s made some of my favorite shaving products and perfumes, including Gratiot League Square, Nefertiti, and Le Petite Prarie. I’m glad he released Legato via Maher Olfactive so he could explore oud with fewer constraints. And I noticed immediately that Legato shows what I think of as his perfumery signature, which often includes rich stone fruit in his sweeter, lusher accords. It’s very on-brand.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

As a musician myself I would love to get my nose on this fragrance. Like how the name Legato was described in this article with a visual attached. The notes in this fragrance sounds amazing. (pun intended)

I enjoyed reading Ida’s review and discovering what “legato” means in regards to music composition. It is thrilling to think of the different ouds that Shawn Meyer used to suggest a legato in his fragrance. I am excited there is a plum accord in this fragrance.

  • The striking aspect here is the comparison made between the creative process of a perfumer and a seasoned chef.
The reference to Legato and how this concept influenced the development of the oud-themed perfume is also interesting for me. Thank you for the article from DE, USA.

    Thanks for the great writeup!

I did pick up this fragrance and thoroughly enjoyed the direction that Shawn has taken with the oud notes. The use of stone fruit in this composition is quite beautiful.

Very interesting! What strikes me about Maher Olfactive Legato in Ida’s article is how Shawn combines three different types of oud and how they meld together – the intensely animalic Thai oud contrasting with milder, richer, and almost gourmand Cambodian oud, both bridged together with woody and fruity Prachin oud. it sounds like an absolutely intoxicating combination!
