Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery Review (Shawn Maher) 2021 +Deeper and Richer Draw

Maher Olfactive Barrel aged treachery review

When I described 2020’s original Maher Olfactive Treachery as an inscrutable gourmand, artisan perfumer and Art and Olfaction 2020 finalist Shawn Maher’s limited edition and newer iteration  Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery which is an extrait de parfum came along and amplified that interpretation: it now resembles a boozy hearthside lovefest. Deeper, richer and more flamboyant, Shawn’s charred oak barrel aged elixir is a delight for those who appreciate the bouquet of a fine Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Islay malt whiskey. You don’t even have to taste it (although you very nearly can): be you a sophisticated bon vivant ensconced in your precious pied à terre or a Canadian lumberjack seated around a scorching campfire, the new Treachery suits to a T.

I sat pondering why barrel aged Treachery has been haunting me – until I finally made the connection. In 2007, local indie artisanal perfumer Serena Ava Goode of Ava Luxe Perfumes created a marvelous ambery, spicy, honeyed and fruited tobacco perfume entitled Shisha. There are probably very few folk about who recall it now (it was discontinued, alas), but I used to send flacons of it to the late Vero Kern in Switzerland (initially, because I suspected that she’d enjoy it – and afterward, to keep her afloat in it). Shawn’s reincarnation shares a certain DNA with that particular type of water-pipe, hookah aroma which is shared among intimates in a charmed circle of fast friendship. Though far from opiate territory, Treachery possesses a distinctly dreamy, narcotic quality which feels both familiar and exotic.

Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery smells exponentially more intense to me, as well as more gourmand. This is very good news for anyone who has been craving sweeter culinary pleasures, especially if they have been finding many of the current offerings rather humdrum and unimaginative. All that’s divinely smoky and liqueured is incorporated into this potion which poses the question: do I want to wear this, or down it to the dregs? Dusky cocoa, woody vanilla, the fruity/herbal eau de vie intoxication of davana absolutely sing – and are augmented with berry-like savor, sweet almond and saffron tones. Whiskey boasts its six well-spent months within its seasoned oaken cask; it’s confident and ebullient, seconded by its leathery wingman labdanum.

Like any true decadence, Shawn assures us that more is preferable, particularly when your materials reign supreme. The new Treachery is a fragrance in which you feel completely indulged and utterly spoilt. I admit to confection-fatigue of late – then something like Maher Olfactive’s appears and I fall in love with the genre all over again. Whether you find yourself in a north woods log cabin, a Park Avenue penthouse or a hookah lounge, Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery smells authentic and seductive. Like its predecessor, its tenacity is legendary. There’s a reason why it made my top ten selections for 2021’s best fragrances.

Notes: tobacco absolute, labdanum, cocoa, vanilla absolute, davana, whiskey, spices, saffron, berries, sweet almond, oakwood absolute.

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

I’m not of a whiskey drinker, but I really enjoy it’s presence in perfumery. The mixture of whiskey with tobacco an cocoa sounds really nice. I liked Ida’s description of the Canadian lumberjack seated around a campfire. Sounds like a cozy and seductive experience. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Shawn Maher is an amazing perfumer and I have tried a number of his beautiful creations. Ida is spot on in her review of Treachery. I’d love to try this barrel aged version of this lovely perfume. Liked Ida’s comparison of the old original version of Treachery with this new version. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I am getting gourmand fatigue too. There has to be something extremely unique about a gourmand perfume for me to purchase a bottle. Barrel Aged Treachery sounds special. I’m intrigued by the whiskey and love tobacco in a fragrance. I would definitely like to give this one a try. I live in Indiana.

I really appreciated Ida showing her passion for the fragrance through her writing (“Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery smells exponentially more intense to me, as well as more gourmand.”) Her breakdown of the fragrance was excellent, giving you a 3D picture of how it will interact with one’s senses.

  • I’m a sucker for a boozy gourmand (Seattle Chocolate was my signature scent for years) and Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery sounds stupendous! As a side bar, for New Year’s Eve I inherited a partially used Whiskey Advent Calendar from a friend who isn’t a big fan of the stuff. Myself, my husband and my best friend finished it off — a somewhat ill-advised move, as only a couple of the samples were more than palatable. The next morning I was feeling very whisky-averse and concerned that I might not be a fan of bourbon any longer. I went to the cabinet and smelled some of the “good stuff,” and rest assured it still smelled fantastic. The advent calendar was a total bust, but I’m sure Barrel Aged Treachery would be a huge hit with myself and my husband too, if I grace him with an opportunity to try it as well, haha!

Sorry for double post!! I live in Indiana, USA

  • Very seductive review! Now that we all crave for something more rich and intense during this time of the year, whiskey, tabaco, cocoa sounds right up my alley!

  • This sounds fantastic, I love whisky scents. This seems to be in the range of Nasomatto Baraonda or the dryer Your Liquid Gold by Fine Spirits Perfume – both great. I’d love to win this sample to Europe, thanks for the draw!

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️ Oh boy!! Thank you for such a fun review!! I happen to own a sample of the original Treachery and so put some on to shovel snow last night. It was perfect! The warm hug of scent reminded me of many a pleasant walk home in the frigid snow after drinks in grad school (but without the sore morning). Personally, I get more of a Speyside or even bourbon note, rather than peaty scotch (on my skin the vanilla and wood were quite prominent, making me think of American oak barrel rather than European smoke). The tobacco is fantastic and truly reminded me of several scholarly meetups where pipes, whiskey, books, & armchairs were the olfactory landscape. The cocoa and berries kept everything away from the bitter edges that tobacco & whiskey/scotch can push. This scent was especially nice outside where it had full space to expand. ❤️ I can only imagine how powerful & how lovely of a winter scent the new Treachery will be for the lucky winner! Thank you for the opportunity! USA ❤️

This sounds lovely, really like the notes and the sense of smokey vanilla but mostly in here for the love in with a Canadian lumberjack wearing this… Where do I sign up?! From UK.

  • Eric Nelson says:

Well being from St. Louis I might be biased since that’s where Shawn is based from, but I ADORE the original batch of Treachery so I’d love to try this. I enjoyed Ida’s description of the fragrance that it’s more whiskey and gourmand. Would love to try!

  • Great review! You had me at this line: “Deeper, richer and more flamboyant, Shawn’s charred oak barrel aged elixir is a delight for those who appreciate the bouquet of a fine Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Islay malt whiskey.” I’ve enjoyed OK Fine barrel aged fragrances, so I’m really intrigued by this take on the original Treachery.

    Cheers from the midwest, USA.

  • Ida’s whiskey mentions caught my attention. I will sometimes order a Laphroaig or Oban for the aroma. Then I will sip slowly on it all night. I want to feel this luxurious! I am in the US.

  • I’m interested to try this fragrance for different reasons, e.g. because Ida says that it is one of her ten favorite releases from 2021, because of its list of notes, and because Ida’s description of it made it seem very appealing. I’d like to finally get a chance to try a fragrance release from perfumer Shawn Maher. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

What an appealing review from Ida! I am a happy enjoyer of all sorts of boozy scents. If they are gourmand-ish to that, which they usually are, then I am in fragrance heaven. Maher Olfactive Barrel Aged Treachery sounds like a super potent magical concoction, and reading about its distinctly dreamy, narcotic quality which feels both familiar and exotic makes me really want to try it. I am based in Ireland, EU.

  • As someone who strongly dislikes the taste of alcohol, I find it amusing that I tend to enjoy boozy notes in fragrance, and this certainly sounds like a profound scent! I love in Houston, TX

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review, Ida

I had a chance to smell the original Treachery and I need to dig it out.

I love the idea of a barrel aged version of this fragrance. Of course, it is an extrait and that will be percieved differently, but alcohol has the ability to extract many wonderful olfactive elements from barrels used for alcohol distillation.

The concept of intimacy in the context of a shisha was quite interesting and brings back many fond memories of sitting at the beach with friends and blowing dense clouds of shisha smoke. The OG Treachery had this touch of intimacy in that it stayed sweet and close to the skin and enveloped you throughout the day.

Looking forward to smelling this one,

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

Thanks for the wonderful review Ida. I found the original a little too smoky for my tastes (and I usually love smoke!) but maybe this aged version is more up my alley. I do love a shisha or hookah scent from my days spent in the Middle East. I would love to get a sample of this to try. Thank you Cafleurebon and Shawn! US

  • Treachery sounds so indulgent and rich! I love the notes listed and especially the smoky notes! I would love to try this perfume. I live in the USA.

  • I have a sample of the original Treachery that I’ve been only using on special occasions to avoid using it up. I’m a student so I can’t go splurging on the full size fragrance.

I’m new in my fragrance journey and although I’ve tried about 30 different samples, nothing has come close to Treachery yet.

Ida’s description of the barrel aged version sounds mouth watering and as a whisky lover it’s extra cool. I live in New York.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Very nice review Ida! What appeals to me about Ida’s review is her description of it as the perfect elixir for those who love Laphroaig or Islay whiskey. I absolutely adore a good peaty and smokey scotch, and Laphroaig is my hands down favorite, while Islay scotches are a close second. And so I’m very intrigued by a fragrance Ida says is perfect for that type of person, someone who loves a good dose of decadence with their sophistication, who loves smokey and strong flavours. I too suffer from confection-fatigue in a way – meaning that I generally can’t handle gourmands that are too sweet – but one that is woody, liquored, deep and rich without being cloyingly sweet sounds perfect. I live in the US.

  • I am big fan of buzzy perfumes and whisky with tobacco sounds just amazing! Unfortunately I am not familiar with Maher Olfactive.
