Flashbulbs burn the air like tiny lightning strikes. In the first row are the glitterati, waiting from behind their dark glasses to be impressed. Then, down the runway drifts the smell of something masculine as a notched collar and as the music hits its rhythm, the fragrance shifts feminine and fruity. Models saunter the runway while electronica thumps a slinky beat. Welcome to New York Fashion Week where the Bibhu Mohapatra Show, scented with LilaNur Parfums Davana Cèdre, has just kicked off.

LilaNur Parfums is the creation of New Delhi-based Anita Lal and Paul Austin who has worked extensively in the fragrance industry and as a brand expert; whose brand ethos is to fuse the olfactive heritage of India with modern perfumery. For LilaNur Parfums’ initial collection, French perfumers Honorine Blanc, Olivier Cresp, Fabrice Pellegrin, and Clément Gavarry were selected to each compose a scent using a classic Indian ingredients “as their muse and starting point.

Honorine Blanc and LilaNur Parfums Davana Cèdre

Her second for the brand, Davana Cèdre was created by Firmenich master perfumer Honorine Blanc, who says, “cedarwood has always been elemental and androgynous; I wanted to accent it with the sweet, herbaceous tonality of davana used in the beautiful floral garlands of southern India.” LilaNur Parfums Davana Cèdre scented the runway at the Bibhu Mohapatra Fall 2023 Fashion show in New York City. Mohapatra chose the fragrance because of its harmonious blend of spiritual and urban and because “carries no hint of nostalgia. Like Nancy Cunard, it juxtaposes and blends masculine and feminine forces in a modern way. It is the scent of now.”

Mood Board of Nancy Cunard at the Bibhu Mohapatra F/W 2023 show

With its pared-down, transparent construction and androgynous character, Davana Cèdre is modern and urbane, something Nancy Cunard might indeed have sported. When I spray it on my wrists, the first thing that pops into my head is model Rain Dove, like Nancy Cunard, equal parts feminine swag and masculine chic. Davana Cèdre opens not with its stars but a warm-up act courtesy of some frisky pink peppercorn. With its piquant apple and rose facets, the pepper gives the fragrance a bouncy, fruity entrée accentuated by the berryish smell of cassis. And, as it turns out, the pepper is not about to rush off the catwalk. It sticks around long enough to escort leading lady davana to the front of the stage and then hangs back in the sidelines.

Enter davana. I find this Indian herb something of a chameleon; in some fragrances, I have been struck by a distinct citric bitterness not unlike grapefruit, while in others, I get more of a fougere-like greenery. Here, it is languid, sweetish, herbal and rooty. It partners beautifully with the angelica that comes out to join it, and the combination of the two plants echoes tarragon, white tea, and young carrots. There’s even a tinge of ganja. I find the aroma fascinating, and probably the most distinctive use of davana I’ve come across since Ormonde Jayne’s Osmanthus Elixir.

While I’ve been thinking about davana, cedar has been inching forwards. I was aware of its sturdy, burnished presence in the background, but now, in the heart, it adds a dry sheen to the davana and fruity notes that balances the fragrance elegantly, in a lucid style that reminds me at times of Jean-Claude Ellena’s work for Hermes. Unlike some genderless perfumes, Davana Cèdre does not so much weave between masculine and feminine in style but walks a thin line between the two, something few unisex fragrances manage without smelling bland. The dry-down brings the cedar further forward and softens the davana with some clean musk. It’s smooth, refined, with a surprising soulfulness.

Notes: Davana, cedar, pink pepper, angelica, cassis, musk.

  • Davana is a note that I am not all that familiar with and that is what interests me most about this fragrance. It sounds like it has herbal, woody, and green facets – a component that could serve many purposes depending on the aim of the perfumer. This fragrance sounds lovely and I appreciate those that walk the line between masculine and feminine as Lauryn claims this one to do. I would love to try this fragrance so that I could learn more about davana and discover what magic it holds. I live in NC, USA.

  • I am a fan of unisex fragrances that go both ways and this seems to be one of them.. cedar in general is also a note in perfumery that when done well becomes enchanting. Devana is also a tricky note. I am happy the perfumer found a way to work them together..

Davana seems like an interesting note to center a fragrance around. i like that the fragrance is both masculine and feminine at the same time. I like also that this is a distinctive use of the davana note. I live in Maryland USA.

  • This sounds like a perfect spring time fragrance. I love davana and angelica. They are some of my favorite herbal/woodland ingredients. It’s exciting to see Lauryn state that this one reminds her of Jean-Claude Ellena’s work. He is one of my favorites – a master of fresh yet complex fragrances. I would love to try this one. Reading from Virginia, USA.

  • Lauryn! Michelyn! ❤️❤️ What an intelligent and gorgeous review! I love my bottles of LilaNur and can absolutely envision the sleek modernity and vibrancy of Davana Cèdre that Lauryn so masterfully describes! A Must Experience! ❤️❤️❤️

  • John Michael Jones says:

What struck me was when Lauryn said, “the dry-down brings the cedar further forward and softens the davana with some clean “MUSK”. I love my musk!! I live in Boston, Massachusetts!

  • I do enjoy unique unisex fragrances and Davana Cèdre fits in this category well. Davana seems like an earthy herbal scent. As a gardener, this caught my attention. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • The thing that really draws my attention is the cedarwood mixed with sweet herbal notes. I think this may be the first fragrance that I’ve heard about with this combination of cedarwood and davana so I’m very curious to see how this combination would smell. From TX, USA

  • Ooh I’m so excited to try this house!! I love when houses are based on an East & West unity. It just seems to bring in a whole new expression of classic ingredients. And what a list of master perfumers they chose to launch with! This sounds exactly like a fusion of wonderful styles and I’m completely loving the notes used.
And what a wonderful way to do your runway show, with fragrance setting the mood!! Bravo!
In US – thank you for the opportunity to win this new fascination.

  • From the review, it looks like that Davana Cèdre is a modern, androgynous composition that does not look to the past but to the future. Cedar and davana are prominent and the composition may also remind some of OJ Osmanthus. I am in US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I’m really interested in the balancing between the davana, cedar, and fruity notes. New Jersey, USA.

  • I’ve had the opportunity to try davana essential oil and I quite like it. It’s fruity (dried peaches), balsamic and woody with a touch of tobacco smokiness and a medicinal tea quality. It’s quite complex and definitely unisex. Davana Cedre sounds like it makes good use of the note. The cedar and musk seems to refine the herb forward composition. My favorite use of davana in a modern fragrance in Chloe Nomade Absolu (Quentin Bisch). MD, USA.

  • Lauryn always delivers great reviews.
I loved reading about Davana Cèdrea. To me is somethinga tahat freshens up the perfume industry. I love unisex perfumes, but to be honest I think that fragrances do not have gender.
The Davana is something that you don’t usually see on perfumes but when you do, you get totally impressed. I hope I get this one since I think this would be a great addition to my collection.

Lauryn has piqued my interest in this creation. The notes of cassis, davana, and cedar sound intriguing. I look forward to getting my nose on this one 🙂 PA, USA

  • I am not familiar with the Davana note.
I always love the way we readers not only get great reviews, but also get to learn a little also.
This sounds like an olfactory experience.

  • A unisex fragrance that is not bland….yes please. I wasn’t familiar with Davana, didn’t realize it was a herb. Interesting that it seems to morph depending on what it is paired with. I’d love to win “the scent of now”. Thanks for the great review. USA.

  • Davana is a note I haven’t ever smelled before! It sounds great and would love to try it. I’m in California.

  • From Lauryn’s review of Lila Nur Parfums Davana Cèdre, it seems to be an elegant perfume, a good unisex perfume, balanced between yin and yang. I am not familiar with davana, so very curious about it. It was interesting to see Madurai-Grasse written on the beautiful bottle – Grasse is of course famous as a perfume capital of the world (I believe) and Madurai in South India for its sandalwood culture (maybe davana too). Thanks for the review and a very generous draw of Lila Nur Parfums Davana Cèdre. From continental USA.

  • Davana and cedarwood sounds like a terrific focal point for a chic, modern perfume. Your description of davana’s range is really informative and its facets here—languid, sweetish, herbal, rooty, and even a bit dank—are really appealing, especially in balance with pink pepper and fruity top notes. And some grounding cedar is always welcome. Great review, Lauryn.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway—I’d love to try this one!

  • Michael Prince says:

What interested me about LilaNur Parfums Davana Cèdre based on Lauryn’s review is learning about a newly discovered New Delhi-based brand created by Anita Lal and Paul Austin that works with so many great perfumers. Davana Cedre was perfumed by Firmenich Master Perfumer Honorine Blanc. I like the unisex interplay between cedarwood, a sweet fruity herbal davana and floral notes. I would love the opportunity to win this. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I’ve heard loads of amazing thing about Lianur and how it captures the vibrant florals and scents of India, a place I would love to visit one day. This perfume intrigues me with the description as an androgynous style perfume. True genderless scents are some of my favorites and free you up to feel however your heart desires on that day. Thank you for the chance to win a bottle. In US

I am very intrigued by the davana note. I like that it adds a rooty greenery to the perfume. And the tinge of ganja is definitely up my alley. The cedar and pink pepper notes will definitely appeal to both men and women.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d like to try this fragrance. Cedar and angelica are two notes which I like. I’d like to become more familiar with davana. I’m also intrigued to try it when Lauryn describes it as: “smooth, refined, with a surprising soulfulness.” I live in the U.S.A.

  • I am fascinated by the India herb Davana as this is the first time I’ve ever heard of it. I would love to try this fragrance as Lauryn said its modern. Also created with cedar for androgynously beautiful scent, “blending masculine and feminine forces…” I live in CA, USA.
    Thanks for the giveaway!!

    Thanks for the review Lauryn.
Davana is in the artemisa family and is said to smell different on everyone – which makes this fragrance quite interesting.
My memories of this plant are a herbal, green tea like scent.

I love the thought of cedar as an androgenous scent – It’s not something that I have thought about before.

Would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Very nice review Lauryn! What strikes me about LilaNur Parfums Davana Cèdre based on Lauryn’s review is how the perfumer describes it as “elemental and androgynous,” with the smoothness of the cedarwood complementing the herbaceous davana to create a modern and unusual fragrance that has traditional roots in French and Indian heritage and ingredients. That sounds so striking and interesting to me and I definitely wish to experience it for myself. I live in the US.
