During a recent encounter at the NH Collection Hotel suite in Milan during Esxence 2023, I had the privilege of exploring LilaNur Parfums AGAR ÉPICÉ, an exquisite fragrance crafted by renowned perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin (Firmenich).

Co-founded by Anita Lal and Paul Austin, LilaNur Parfums is India’s trailblazing luxury perfume house. Beyond purely fragrance, LilaNur Parfums stands as a beacon of sustainability and ethical practices within the fragrance industry. The brand’s commitment to social purpose initiatives is evident through its collaboration with the Rosabagh Foundation, which empowers local communities in regions where precious ingredients are sourced.

At the core of AGAR ÉPICÉ is the elusive Assam Oud, a prized resinous extract derived from the rare Aquilaria tree. This essence exudes an air of mystery and elegance, hailing from the heart of nature’s most precious offerings. As the fragrance unfolds, the warmth of ginger graces the composition, adding an invigorating and comforting quality to the overall experience. The earthy scent of cypriol further enhances the allure, intertwining seamlessly with the Assam Oud, preserving the essence of ancient traditions in this contemporary olfactory creation. There is certainly an underlying sweetness to the composition which could be a combination of unlisted notes such as cinnamon or cardamom and in the base an undertone of rich resins.

The inclusion of sandalwood offers a delightful combination of woody and creamy tonality, enveloping the senses in a soothing and serene aura. Moreover, the subtle leathery aspect adds sophistication and allure, elevating AGAR ÉPICÉ to a refined and evocative fragrance.

One notable facet of LilaNur Parfum’s dedication to responsible sourcing is its collaboration with Jasmine C.E., India’s largest source for floral absolutes. This partnership enables AGAR ÉPICÉ to embrace delicate floral undertones, artfully balancing the intensity of the Oud.

Thank you for the review of LilaNur Parfums Agar Épice, Karl!
Not only do I love how this brand supports ethical cause in the communities where they source their ingredients, the fragrance itself sounds fantastic as well.
I have had many amazing olfactive experiences with oud, so I am very curious of Assam oud and how it is sourced from resin from that rare Aquilaria tree. The opening of ginger paired with its rich resins sounds absolutely incredible, and I love how the sweetness of cardamom and cinnamon can be identified within its cocktail. The creamy sandalwood and leathery facets are a lovely addition to what I can only imagine to be a fantastic balanced blend.
I love how this fragrance is a beautiful homage to India’s heritage, and I would really love to get my nose on it.

  • Oud, spices, and sandalwood sound like a beautiful, fragrant heaven to me. “Responsible sourcing and social initiatives” make this perfume even more desirable. I’m in the USA.

Karl, this is a terrific review, as I have seen LilaNur on social media and Agar Epice really appeals to me, as well as learning about their commitment to sustainability. Assam Oud and resins appeals to me and would be my favourite. UK

  • Thanks for the review Karl!

This is the first time I read about LilaNur Parfums and you’ve left a great impression of the brand. I quickly had to read Ida’s previous articles to catch up!

Sustainability and ethical practices have become the standard for my consumer choices and reading about the social purpose initiatives is a cherry on top!

I’ve not always been a fan of Oud. In my journey to sample and try out new and different notes I have come across a fair few… challenging Oud fragrances that I simply had to scrub off.
It wasn’t until I started reading CaFleureBon and tried some of the more Natural, Softer and higher quality offerings out there that I started enjoying Oud.

Agar Épicé sounds like a bottle celebration. A scent that puts a smile on your face and lifts up your spirits! I could certainly use some of that!

    Greetings from the UK!

I truly value Karl’s nose, where he is able to pick up even unlisted notes of cinnamon and cardamom in this wonderful perfume. To me, this fragrance sounds absolutely divine. I am a huge fan of oud when combined with sandalwood. it gives the fragrance a very comforting nature. I loved the associations Karl mentioned that the Asam oud conjured for him. I have never tried Asam oud in a composition and I would love to try this lively perfume from such a wonderful and ethical brand.

  • I’ve tried and own quite a few oud perfumes but the Assam oud is new to me. This resin seems to combine well with warm spices like ginger and creamy woods. The addition of leather adds sophistication. I’m delighted to see LilaNur’s commitment to responsible sourcing of raw materials. It’s so important especially with regards to use of resins and certain woods. I’m in the US

  • Karl’s description had me at ginger and cypriol but the incorporation of Assam oud and leather has me even more intrigued. The story behind the brand itself is as inspiring as the fragrance. Their commitment to sustainability and the preservation of Indian culture is most admirable. I wish the best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Responsible sourcing is so important especially in a product that, although beautiful, is not a necessity. And the addition of ginger and this floral under current sounds amazing. In maryland.

  • As fan of spicy fragrances, I would love to experience Agar Épicé. The Asam Oud is what attracts me to this perfume. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

For a while now, I’ve been interested in trying fragrances from Lilanur Parfums. I’ve been interested in trying “Agar Epice”. I liked hearing about its combination of Assam oud and cypriol, with the perceived cinnamon and/or cardamom. It sounds like the sandalwood and leather are good additions to it. It seems like this company has certain principles which result in them releasing classy, high-quality fragrances. I live in the U.S.A.

Karl does an excellent job of describing the unique, elegant, and smooth qualities of this fragrance. Karl’s olfactory abilities are truly impressive; he can detect even the subtlest notes like cinnamon and cardamom in this delightful fragrance. The combination of oud and sandalwood is a personal favorite of mine, as it imparts a sense of warmth and comfort to the scent. • Massive respect goes out to the people at LilaNur for both respecting the environment, as well as respecting and supporting the communities from which materials are sourced. This is what mostly stands out to me as it is so important, but the fragrance itself looks lovely. I’m a big fan of fragrances that are earthy but also have a rather fresh and invigorating opening. I live in Illinois, USA.

  • I am unfamiliar with any fragrance houses from India, but I’m sure with their rich history they know a thing or two about fragrance. I am a fan of Fabrice’s work and own a few of his creations. Love that this is ethically sourced. Must preserve these precious gifts of nature. I’m curious about that undertone of rich resins. Perfect for fall. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I’ve been interested in LilaNur Perfumes since reading Ida’s great reviews last year! Agar Epice is the fragrance I would most like to try because agarwood is one of my absolute favorite scents.
Finding sustainable and responsible sourcing for ingredients is important to me and I’m glad to see more companies like LilaNur Perfumes highlighting their commitment to ethical sourcing.
And the scent notes themselves sound absolutely inviting – oud among woody, earthy, creamy notes with delicate florals wow!
    Best wishes from the US!

  • Ginger must be a wonderfully fresh foil to Assam oud, though I don’t have a grasp on what cypriol smells like in isolation, or in similar woody perfumes. It sounds like a distinctive highlight for AGAR ÉPICÉ, even though the oud and sandalwood here are the focus. Speaking of, LilaNur Parfum’s ethical sourcing practices are admirable and particularly important for these materials. Thanks for the review, Karl.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I’ve read about Assam oud in other articles and know its long history. Seeing the company create from it while doing it responsibly is a great way to honor the past while respecting its future. Cheers to LilaNur.

  • Excellent review from Karl of LilaNur Parfums AGAR ÉPICÉ. What strikes me about this amazing fragrance is the elusive Assam Oud, as I love Oud in fragrances. Also the included note of Sandalwood as this is my favorite note ever. Thanks for the opportunity. Greetings from the USA.

  • LilaNur Parfums is Indian niche house , working with French perfumers , top Indian ingredients , combining best of both worlds.
Agar Épicé I think lives up to its name , lots woods, spices and genuine Indian oud. The composition is brightened by fresh zingy ginger and hase modern gourmand facet.
    Thank you for the opportunity
