I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell:
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore …
~ Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Sudden Light (written in 1853-54)

Martha’s Vineyard by Ida©

Today is a warm, seabreeze-y day in May, illuminated by the light we know and welcome with gratitude. The scent of the Atlantic Ocean drifts through my sunlit window, a reminder of where I find myself as the earth brings forth luxuriant verdancy and colorful blooms. “Be at ease”, intones the delicate, persistent aroma. “No ill shall befall you.”

Liis Lucienne

So murmurs Liis Lucienne – which the brand refers to as ‘a different light’. I feel it as the light that dances barefoot in the waves along the coast – lighthearted and frolicsome, drifting on a zephyr. It is weightless and full of wonder, as so many of Robertet perfumer Jérôme Epinette’s fragrances are. In Lucienne, clarity weds symmetry: vivid citrus tones balance (and echo, as well) the lemony sweetness of magnolia, with its rosy facets.  A subtle melonlike (and/or kiwi fruit) limpidity can be perceived in the dragon fruit (Firmenich named it flavor of the year 2023), and also in the fantasy note of waterlily (lightly sweet, faintly aquatic with a lemon lilt). The crisp amber listed here I take to mean a form of ambergris (likely an art essence) – utilized with a sparing hand to assist in developing a marine accord which doesn’t scream ‘Calone®”. Lucienne’s composition smells blithe and airy, effortless.

Martha's Vineyard Summer

Martha’s Vineyard Lighthouse Summer by Ida

Lucienne combines fruit with florals and umami, all in a single breath: the bracing tonicity of a radiant day spent in salt air, without pushing the envelope. Overstatement is unnecessary when intimation is everything, all by its lone. There exists a purity and immediacy in the freshness of which it sings; the immense pleasure of simpler things, of sun and shore as you will it. Liis Lucienne is the light that we know intimately, unfettered by adornment or illusion – and it is precious. Wear it and grow wings. “For in the dew of little things, does the heart find its morning and is refreshed.” ~ Khalil Gibran, on Friendship

Notes: pomelo, lemon zest, magnolia, dragonfruit, waterlily, crisp amber, marine accord

Hello from Florida! Ida’s review definitely compelled me to try Lucienne — I think the world is sorely in need of marine accords without calone, and every summer calls for more light, refreshing scents.

I find this review appealing due to its poetic language and vivid descriptions of the fragrance. Ida’s use of sensory imagery, such as the scent of the Atlantic Ocean and the feeling of dancing barefoot in the waves, creates a sensory experience for the reader and makes the fragrance come alive. The use of quotes by Khalil Gibran adds a philosophical element to the review that some readers may find thought-provoking. Additionally, the detailed breakdown of the fragrance notes and the mention of Firmenich’s flavor of the year 2023 may appeal to those interested in perfumery and fragrance trends.

I am from Germany, but I adore the description of this fragrance!

  • I love the description of the foamy edges of waves on the shore creating such a light, ethereal atmosphere. This event sounds lovely. Thank you from NC, USA for the lovely review!

  • This sounds lovely with it’s light and foamy qualities. Wonderful review! Hello from NC, USA

  • What a beautiful review. It made me so nostalgic for summers past and excited for the one to come — Liis Lucienne sounds like the perfect scent for a perfect summer day, with the floaty citrus and fruity notes and the deeper marine accord and ambergris. I am located in New York, in the US!

  • The umami of salt air with the crispness of summer citrus in “purity and immediacy” – this Lucienne sounds like the perfect burst of freshness for this warmer weather. I really appreciate simplicity in fine things and Ida’s review suggest this is a strong point of this perfume by Liis. Sounds delightful!
    Best wishes from the US.

  • I like how Ida described Liis Lucienne as being aquatic without using calone – it sounds really lovely and refreshing for summer! I would love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

Not sure what dragonfruit smells like, but it intrigues me, especially since it was a Firmenich flavor of the year in 2023. I live in Maryland USA. I also like the idea of a bracing tonicity of a radiant day spent in salt air.

  • Trinity33 says:

Nice review Ida! Lucienne seems like an uplifting, optimistic fragrance. The citrus and dragonfruit in combination with the delicate magnolia and waterlily and the summery marine accord make it seem very feminine. I was mesmerized by the photo of the hyacinth and lemon provided by Liis. The juxtaposition of the shapes and colors is striking. MD, USA

Thank you for the lovely review of Liis Lucienne, Ida! I’ve been really into to this perfume house for some time now since getting my nose on Bo last year.
Lucienne sounds very appealing to me. The lemon sweetness of Magnolia? Oh, yes! Accompanied by rose facets? Yes!!
Dragonfruit, water Lily…this one sounds so etherial, I see myself painted as a mermaid washed by the water, kissed by the sun.
When you said, “Liis Lucienne is the light that we know intimately, unfettered by adornment or illusion,” I really connected with the illustration that Lucienne’s bouquet creates.
Finished with crisp amber and a marine accord, so lovely, and what a beautiful way to dry down this fruity floral.
I would so love to have this in my collection.

  • I’ve been so intrigued by Lucienne since it was first released, and Ida’s review just piques my interest more. I love the descriptions of the scent as frolicsome and light-hearted and as light dancing on the waves. After a long, cold winter, these images of sunny days by the sea and the “immense pleasure of simpler things” sound absolutely divine. I would love to try this one! I’m in the USA.

  • Ida’s reviews are always so artistic and evocative! Her description of the ocean’s scent as a calming, almost maternal force was most endearing. I’ve only had the pleasure of visiting the ocean a handful of times, but there is nothing quite like it. Should I be lucky enough to win Lucienne, I’m sure it would be reminiscent of those family vacations, brief glimpses into a world beyond my small midwestern existence.
    Indiana, USA

  • Thanks for the review Ida! This sounds lovely. I’m not a fan of calone when it is super apparent. Foamy and airy is what I prefer in the summer, and calone can be a bit heavy in high heat. Also, you mention there’s an umami feeling in this? I’m interested in exploring that.
    Hello from Chicago,

  • minteacup says:

Stunning review of this perfume! So evocative I feel like I need to step outside as soon as possible. My tastes tend towards cocooning layered fragrances, but lately I’ve felt drawn to explore compositions that let the light in and inspire a sense of openness. Lucienne sounds perfect in that respect. I’m in the US, Thank you for the draw!

  • Love the review. Sounds like a dragon fruit melon drink that I just want to wear.
Perfect time of the year to rock this one!

    Thanks from the USA

  • Poetical and beautiful review by Ida. I also love the Khalil Gibran quote, The Prophet literally had me in tears when I first heard the record. The scent profile of Liis Lucienne appeals to me as it sounds like a beautiful scene of partners walking on a white sands beach with Crystal blue warm water over their feet. I truly would love to experience this precious fragrance. Greetings and gratitude from the USA!

  • cynthmarie says:

This perfume sounds like a tonic for the soul. I love when ambergris makes a fragrance radiate, sing, and sparkle. Citrus and lemony florals are my favorite. I’d love to experience this new light shone on a fruity floral washed in the salt air. In Texas.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I would love to try Liis “Lucienne”. I’m truly intrigued to try it when Ida mentions the lemony sweetness of magnolia, with its rosy facets, the dragon fruit which Firmenich named “flavor of the year 2023”, the water lily, the amber, etc. This fragrance seems like it’s fresh and enjoyable, and I’d like to add it to my collection. Also, I’m under the impression that it’s unisex. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I tend to enjoy aquatics more in concept than execution—heavy doses of Calone® don’t agree with me—but Liis Lucienne sounds easy to wear, with a lovely airy quality. The melonlike dragon fruit note is unusual and sounds like it adds some complexity to the lemon and magnolia. This one seems understated and restrained. Thanks for the beautiful review, Ida.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • chrisskins says:

What a gorgeous-sounding day with, “the lights around the shore”. Ida paints a picture of moments I love to imagine and this lemony magnolia and more. This scent could carry a day on a breeze. I live in NY.

  • wallygator88 says:

This is a wonderful review Ida.

I sense a lot of uniqueness in this fragrance – the waterlily accord. the use of amber as a nod to ambergris, fruitiness, saltiness and (I don’t know how) umaminess.

I really would like to get a nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

Love the beautiful spring photos. This makes me crave a relaxing walk along the coast. The notes sound amazing. Thanks for the chance. USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Ida! What appealed to me about Ida’s review is how she described Liis Lucienne as a crisp and light fragrance that is both weightless and effortless yet unique with unusual notes of dragon fruit and the fantasy note of waterlily instead of the all too common “Calone” marine fruitiness. I am as tired of Calone as i am intrigued by dragon fruit so Liis Lucienne sounds like the perfect summer fragrance to try for me! I live in the US.
