Liis…ethereal like a second skin ~ Alissa Sullivan and Leslie Hendin

Marin County natives Alissa Sullivan and Leslie Hendin, the founders/creative directors of California-based LIIS (the name Liis is an amalgam of Alissa and Leslie), share a vision: a desire to exemplify the beauty of minimalism manifested as fragrances which are a delight to wear. To this end, they have employed the talents of well-known Robertet perfumer Jérôme Epinette, the nose of choice behind many Atelier Cologne, Byredo, Commodity, Dolce & Gabbana, Ellis Brooklyn, Floral Street, Jovoy, Nest and Vilhelm Parfumerie releases (among others). One fragrance in particular called out to me –LIIS Bo, a very naturalistic woody tobacco eau de parfum which feels perfect for autumn and the encroaching cooler months.

Both Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Hendin were fortunate to grow up in northern California not far from Point Reyes National Seashore, the only federally protected seashore on the West Coast. Marin County has long been a haven for artists of all sorts since the early 1920s (musicians, painters, authors, actors et al), but this national preserve is also an extraordinary blend of craggy marine coastline, magnificent forests populated with cypress and redwoods, and fertile grasslands teeming with an abundance of wildlife. It’s easy to understand why the creative community once stealthily removed signage in order to protect their privacy and discourage outsiders: their hidden Bohemia.

Bo alludes to a Bohemian atmosphere with its calming chalorous tones of variegated gold, ochre and russet. The ocean is indeed part of coastal Marin County, but it is not that which we smell: conifer-redolent wooded environs reach out to us with beckoning fingers, wreathed in tendrils of spiced smoke. Too gentle to suggest a campfire, the delicacy of fine incense burns in a corner of the cottage set on the forest’s edge. It’s lemony, peppery and luminous (elemi), balsamic with a trace of bitter almond. Cedar logs in the fireplace release a warmth reinforced by guaiac wood for added smolder; redwood pine needles impart an elusive dry, lightly spiced aroma. Wistful puffs of tobacco suggest a thoughtful pipe smoked in contemplation, tenderly vanillic and more sylvan than sweet. Here we find that precious corner where retreat from crowds and everyday din is a boon; it sets the stage for burgeoning creativity in natural surroundings far from prying eyes.

Liis Bo is undemandingly beguiling; it doesn’t make you jump through hoops, challenge your nose, or attempt to impress you – because it doesn’t have to. That’s the point, in fact. In its own quiet way, Bo travels with you like a forest within which reveals itself upon the flesh, murmuring dulcetly to anyone who is willing to listen.

Notes: elemi, tobacco leaves, redwood pine needles, incense, white cedarwood, guaiac wood, vanilla beans

I enjoyed reading about Ida’s description of the Bohemian atmosphere that Liis Bo uses for inspiration and the description of Point Reyes National Seashore. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Oh wow this sounds like the perfect autumn fragrance. Such a great review. It literally spoke to the deepest parts of me. Along with Jerome, it sounds like Alissa and Leslie really understood the gentle magic of the forest. It’s an environment that encapsulated so much of my youth. Shame that large parts of it in California have turned over, but therein lies the beauty of cyclical regeneration. It’ll still be growing long after we’re gone. Wonderful to have a fragrance that can capture its intricately balanced essence in a minimalistic form. Lightly spiced, lightly smoked, tenderly vanillic woods perfect for this time of year. USA

  • Love Northern California and I would love a perfume that evokes the ambience of that landscape, with wood, smoke, and incense. In her review of Liis Bo, Ida created a lovely olfactory image of Marin County with her writing and pictures. Never tried this brand, but this perfume seems lovely. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Liis Bo sounds perfect for Fall. I loved “wistful puffs of tobacco”
Just went to indigo perfumery website and studied also sounds great
Thanks for a nice review since I never heard of this perfume company

  • Ida’s review just takes me places. I realize reading this I really need some time off from work and I need vacation. I want to go to California and just hike and smell the forest. I also love when fragrances try to paint this kind of picture. I love smelling fragrances like LiiS Bo when I want to escape my everyday overworked life. Sounds amazing! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I enjoyed Ida’s review it really painted a picture of where the scent, Bo, can take one on a journey. It also sounds lovely for New England weather. A few of the notes made me think of Byredo Gypsy Water which i believe is by the same perfumer, only a few common notes but if they’re similar I will definitely like Bo. Studied is another scent from Liis that sounds great to me and id love to try as well. Thanks for the generous draw! From CT USA.

  • Thank you Ida for a wonderful review. I really liked the idea of a gentle forest that travels with you rather than forcing you to acknowledge it. I was immediately taken when I saw Jérôme Epinette was the chosen perfumer since I’ve loved all his creations that I’ve experienced (Bal D’Afrique, Gypsy Water, Flash Back In New York and Rose Anonyme). I’m so ready to be beguiled by LiiS Bo. I’m in USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

This sounds gorgeous! The idea of tobacco “more sylvan than sweet” is just lovely. I also appreciate how it’s “undemanding” but “Beguiling.” The notes sound wonderful, as does the overall aesthetic. Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US.

  • I recently tried Liis Bo and it’s a very cozy fragrance that’s perfect for autumn and winter. Ida’s review of the fragrance is articulated in a way that really captures Bo quite well. I agree that it’s too gentle to suggest a campfire, yet there is a subtle smokiness to it. As Ida points out, it’s not a challenging fragrance. I would love to own a bottle of Liis Bo. Thank you, Ida, for the article- and thank you Ann for another giveaway! I am located in the USA.

  • Professor_Bair says:

Amazing. I’ve traveled to see the giant sequoias in northern CA and I still think about the beauty. This fragrance sounds like what I smelled there… It draws me to this fragrance. Can’t wait to try this one! USA

  • Ida’s description of Bo as being like “a forest within” really grabbed me. It sounds so calming and somehow empowering. I am in the US

  • Ida’s review makes Bo sound incredibly versatile, gender neutral, calming, and non-synthetic. Sounds like a must-try! In NC in the USA.

  • Once again Ida delivers a beautifully written review that gives me the impression that LiiS Bo is “Zen” in a bottle. I feel the world could use a few more Zen moments these days.

Bo sounds terrific with it’s woods, resins, and tobacco.

    I’m in TN USA.

  • Anything by Jérôme Epinette is bound to be wonderful, and this sounds like no exception. Vanilla and tobacco are a standout pair, and the addition of elemi sounds incredible. Ida has made a case for a quiet, uncomplicated fragrance and I’m excited to try it! I’m in Pittsburgh, and this sounds like a perfect fall fragrance.

  • joshuabrian says:

Wow, I’ve never heard of this house, but this sounds amazing. Thanks for the introduction and the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • I really enjoyed Ida´s description of Bo. I imagine a fireplace, in the forest, the sea nearby and someone smoking a fine cigar. Sounds like a truly amazing fragrance.

  • I like the way this perfume is described as quiet and it doesn’t have to try to be loud. It takes you to the forest. I grew up in California and there is nothing like being amongst those massive trees. Texas

  • The story in regards to the scent and it’s creation draw you into a less complicated place almost zenlike. We can all use a little more of that in our lives. The connection between the notes sounds quite appealing and perfectly unisex. Congrats to the noses of Alissa and Leslie for creating this scent. Thank you for the draw! WI, USA

  • Northern California is spectacular and I remember enjoying my visit to Point Reyes several years ago, A “green” tobacco is a very appealing scent for Fall’s cooler weather. I’ve tried a few compositions from Jérôme Epinette so I’m excited to try LiiS Bo. I’m in MD, USA.

Ida’s review of Bo by Liis is spot on. Sampling it now and find woody and resinous notes subtle but lingering. I agree with Ida that scent has a bohemian flair that invites creativity and quiet meditation.

  • Ida! ❤️ Adore your review! I’ve been lucky to experience this sample as a part of Indigo Perfumery’s Scented Program (wonderful monthly samples!). I love how Bo creates a gorgeous atmosphere that doesn’t overwhelm the beautiful natural smells of autumn (rather enhances them). Walking outside today, while wearing Bo, I noticed just how beautifully the scent of fallen leaves partnered with the woody tobacco and splendidly ethereal campfire. I would love to own a bottle of this lovely fragrance! Thank you for this opportunity! USA ❤️

Fall in northern California? I’ve never had the pleasure, but this description and fragrance may just take me there. Thanks for the draw. In Louisiana, USA.

  • Sometimes a fragrance that is simple and direct is often the most enjoyable. It can transport us to more ideal times. Sounds like a lovely offering. In maryland.

  • Another excellent review from Ida. I love her descriptions of the woody notes. It feels so rustic and yet so cozy! She is a wordsmith. Cheers from NC, SUA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appealed to me about Ida’s review was learning about a new brand Liis. The two founders growing up in Northern California near the Marine coastline and being inspired by nature including Redwood and Cypress Trees. Bo sounds like the perfect smokey, woody, resinous, earthy, and tobacco fragrance created by brilliant perfumer Jerome Epinette. I am from the USA.

  • Ida has presented an ideal autumn setting in the forest that is beckoning me to enjoy and relax with the use of all my senses. USA

  • Kitty Devereaux says:

I am very intrigued by this. Sounds delightful. I have been wanting a perfume that doesn’t clobber you over the head to get attention.
I live in Virginia and walk in the woods all the time!

  • When I read who their perfumer was, I was delighted!!! I love so many of the brands Jérôme Epinette has worked with, particularly Commodity. And this fragrance sounds so serene. I very much enjoy woody/incense/tobacco fragrances. Usually those notes combined can be very bold. But reading this article, it sounds like it is much more “meditative”. I’d be thrilled to win a bottle of this!
    I live in the USA.

Thanks for the great review, Ida.

This fragrance reminds me of the scene from Lord of The Rings, when Gandalf comes rolling into the Shire, puffing on his pipe on a beautiful day, with the green grass and yellow flowers and the blue skies, in a time when everything was good.

I would love to have a chance to sniff this fragrancce.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I want to try this fragrance very much. I like its list of notes and some of my favorite fragrances come from these lesser known fragrance houses. Ida’s review caused me to be very interested in trying this fragrance and other releases from this house. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Lovely review, Ida. I own and enjoy many fragrances from Atelier Cologne and Nest, so I imagine this would fit right in to my tastes. This fragrance does indeed sound perfect for a cozy, warming effect in autumn! The minimalist style of the bottle is very on-trend and would stand out among others in my collection. Thanks for the most generous draw,
    Anna H

  • I enjoyed everything about this review! This perfectly describes somewhere I could happily live forever if surrounded by such a divine scent. What a captivating description, and now I must get my nose on it! Thank you 🙂

  • I am a lover of anything nature. So, a walk in the forest? Let’s go….. Thanks for another fabulous draw and article. Mich USA

Wonderful review Ida! What appealed to me about the review is her description of the northern California shore as a haven to artists and environmental conservation/naturalistic elements alike, with its magnificent forests and wildlife and it’s protective air of “hidden Bohemia”. I went to college in northern California so I have equally strong, if very different, memories of the stunning environment. But I definitely understand that the area has so much to offer, and I love the idea of a fragrance that introduces me to a whole different facet of the area that is significant to so many people. And this woody, fresh, balsalmic, resinous, and lemony-pine fragrance sounds very much like my sense memory of the area. I live in the US.
