Les Indemodables Iris Perle Review (Antoine Lie) + Grand Cru Orris Draw

Les Indemodables Iris Perle Review

A girl in a field of flowers by Gaston Bussiere, 1911

In a sea of modern, abstract fragrances, Les Indemodables – whose name means “timeless” – is wonderfully old school, with a line of fragrances based on classic olfactive families but given creative twists. Raw materials, which are extracted in-house, come from growers who supply the brand exclusively, which means the “vintage” of each perfume can vary from year to year along with yield and climate. The resulting fragrances showcase their luxurious ingredients in uncluttered, carefully crafted compositions using high concentrations of natural absolutes. Les Indemodables Iris Perle, from master perfumer Antoine Lie, is one of the best; a glowingly lovely iris fragrance festooned with heady flowers. If you have ever longed to bottle springtime, Iris Perle smells as though you stepped into an impressionist garden in mid-May.

On first spray, garlands of honeyed mimosa, fruity ylang and translucent iris seem to cascade from the bottle. At the very top is a juicy top note like blood orange, all juicy sweetness and tart rind, followed by a more watery, cool note that evokes cucumber one moment, melon the next. These unexpected fruity touches provide an ebullient entrée to the flowers, which also take some surprising turns. Lie teases out  less obvious characteristics from his bouquet: mimosa, which comes out first, only hints at its usual powder puff delicacy, instead displaying its more sensual, honeyed side; the jasmine that follows quietly hints just slightly at decay, its fruitiness amplified over its more usual girlish or indolic qualities.

And then there’s the iris.  Les Indemodables Iris Perle contains a grand cru orris absolute – apparently, the world’s most expensive extract – in what seems like a sizeable dose. The orris brings a complicated set of aromas: unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder. The iris becomes a rich, seductive flower as it twines with ylang ylang and darkened with violet leaf. These ylang and violet create a dynamic tension, the tropical fruit headiness of the former both flirting with and pushing against the dark woodiness of the latter. Stepping back and smelling Iris Perle as a whole again, the iris is fully rounded: the green of the stem and leaves in the soil is hinted at by the inspired addition of clary sage the bloom fully open, the scent of rainfall over warm air and new blossoms. This is where Iris Perle stays until it slowly fades from the skin some hours later.

And yet, despite the multifaceted floral notes in Les Indemodables Iris Perle, the composition retains a watercolour translucence. There are many gorgeous iris fragrances, but none that so perfectly capture the ephemeral loveliness of a breeze-blown May morning.

Notes: French orris absolute grand cru, Moroccan mimosa absolute, violet leaves, Indian jasmine absolute, Madagascan ylang-ylang, clary sage from the Alps.

Lovely review! I love how Lauryn described the orris root here as capturing so many different facets of the material–woody, waxy, powder, creamy, etc. This sounds wonderful and I have enjoyed what I’ve tried from the house before. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US!

  • Gerald Martin Moore says:

This review really sparked my interest, as French perfumes, Iris and vintage were the three words that make me want to smell it! I also really want to read Lauryn’s other reviews, as I think this is a house I may fall for….

  • I liked this about Lauryn’s review, “e orris brings a complicated set of aromas: unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder. The iris becomes a rich, seductive flower as it twines with ylang ylang and darkened with violet leaf. ” I live in the US.

  • “In a sea of modern abstract fragrances, Les indemodobles is wonderfully old school.” Hooked right there. Grand cru Orris and Antoine Lie—- I would love to walk in an impressionist garden. I am going to look for more of this brand on Indigo Perfumery, I have bought from there before vivacious.
    Thank you

Very detailed and in dept review , seems like the iris fragrance to top all iris fragrances , would really love to put my nose on it , new york , usa.

  • I enjoyed Lauryn’s description of Iris Perle, especially the part about the fragrance reminding her of “the scent of rainfall over warm air and new blossoms”. It’s also interesting to see where some of the notes originated. Mich USA

  • I love this description of Orris it’s so spot on! “Unbaked sweet pastry wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder“ YES. All this complexity is why it’s my very favorite floral scent.

  • I welcome the trend of abstract perfumes and it is interesting how Les Indemodables sources the ingredients for its perfumes. The composition is transluscent but it captures the essence of iris well. USA

  • Lauryn’s review of this fragrance was quite intriguing and very informative. I really enjoyed hearing about the creative process and the beautiful notes that went into this amazing sounding fragrance. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • Beautiful review and description! Described so vividly that if I were so inclined I could blind buy confidently. This tells me everything I need to know “ Iris Perle smells as though you stepped into an impressionist garden in mid-May”. Beautiful heady sweet floral yet translucent at the same time ❤️ From US

  • I love iris fragrances, although this one sounds like a much much more interesting and complex combination. The most intriguing part for me was the description of the orris – “with its interesting set of aromas: unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder”. I live in Illinois.

  • Lovely review by Lauryn! I appreciate her description of the grand cru orris root which seems to supply a complexity not usually found with an iris forward fragrance. The honey mimosa and violet leaves sound like wonderful additions and I’m intrigued by the use of clary sage to anchor the composition. Commenting from the USA.

  • I really enjoyed the comparison to a watercolor transparency and the iris note sounds excellent! I have Escale en Indonesie and it Is immaculate! Would love to be considered for this amazing giveaway!

  • Lauryn- bravo!
You really captured the joy of Iris Perle. The high quality of its notes is very evident.

It will put you in a happy frame of mind– much appreciated in 2020.

  • ” If you have ever longed to bottle springtime, Iris Perle smells as though you stepped into an impressionist garden in mid-May.” Lauryn goes on to explain to just how this is accomplished. Many thanks to Lauryn for this most lovely review and many thanks to Indigo Perfumery for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • What I enjoyed about Lauryn’s review was how she emphasized that this fragrance was a standout iris perfume. I like that it isn’t your typical perfume and it is clearly a fragrant masterpiece. I love the notes and I would really love to get my nose on this one. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Great review! It is very in-depth and I love how Lauryn described orris. Definitely want to try it out!
    Florida, USA

  • I really enjoyed how Lauryn explained that in Iris Perle some notes like the mimosa and jasmine for example are mad to act differently than they often do which is nice as well as how the orris butter Grand Cru shows the many facets of iris. This one really sounds amazing and I’d love to try it. I’m in CT USA and thank you for the extremely generous draw.

  • The world’s most expensive orris extract? Sign me up. Lauryn’s review paints this offering as an ephemeral, floral, translucent scent – much like a “breeze-blown May morning” she mentions. I think her words convey the notes so well, which is hard to do. Based in the US.

  • I enjoyed hearing the complicated set of aromas that the iris brings… unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder. Sounds like a lovely perfume. I live in the USA

  • This is a lovely review of a fragrance that seems to embody many facets I love, including hints of paper, wax and powder in addition to floral notes. Also, I’d love to try orris grand cru. I am in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

  • Lauryn knows how to sell a scent. Everything about this review is perfect. I definitely want to try that grand cru orris absolute!

  • Hashim Madani says:

I’ve always associated orris with make-up and face powder so it’s great to know we get to experience its other dimensions in Les Indemodables Iris Perle (unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, and candle wax). VA, USA.

  • As a lover of vintage style perfumes and orris, I loved everything about Lauryn’s review. Beautiful fragrance description. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Besides the wonderful description of Les Indemodables Iris Perle in Lauryn’s review, I enjoyed the pictures that engage the eyes as the fragrance and flowers are described. Simple but deep and rich perfume. I can conjure up the smells from the small set of listed notes, but for experiencing the artistic creation, I may have to check out the perfume itself. Heady, cheerful, uplifting, happy, springtime perfume. Thanks for the generous review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Thank you Lauryn for this beautiful review.
Sounds very beautiful – orris with mimosa, jasmine and ylang-ylang.
    US

  • Lauryn has really captured the essence of Iris! The whole flower is in Iris Perle and it sounds heavenly. Thank you for the interesting review and a step into, Le Indemodables. USA California

  • The gorgeous words and art work perfectly together to paint a picture of a beautiful iris-centric fragrance. I love that the exclusive iris changes the vintage every year. It makes it that much more special. I live in the USA; thanks for the opportunity.

  • patrick_348 says:

I enjoyed how Lauryn took pains to make clear how Iris Perle is different from other iris perfumes. The evocation of other scents was vivid, as when she lists “unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder.” And the addition of clary sage does sound inspired. In the US, in NC.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I have to admit being leery of Iris, but the way that Lauryn expounded on its multi-faceted nature makes me want to fet my nose on this. And she definitely had me at: “There are many gorgeous iris fragrances, but none that so perfectly capture the ephemeral loveliness of a breeze-blown May morning.” A must try!

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Gabriel Garcia Leyva says:

    Great review Lauryn,
Im just exploring the possibility of orris and its many facets, quite good reviews, and I don’t know much about this accords,
    So interesting.
    Thanks
    Gabriel, las vegas nv.

  • Iris with springtime. Lovely. This one sounds like it’s right up my alley. I love iris and I love spring fragrances.

  • Lauren’s delicate references to the work of Nature (“garlands cascade”, drawn by gravity, ushered by wind,) ( “it twines with ylang ylang” like a vine reaching for the sun) speak to the magnificent atavism that fragrance can evoke. Also, she is careful to mention that the vintage of these raw materials can vary year to year, (various growers, differing yields and climates.) This is very dear to my heart, since I have a small farm and know well that Nature has her moods, can endure much, or has much to celebrate and share, and we know this by what she gives. I love the “how it is” as much as the “what it is” in Lauren’s writing. I would love to live in that veil of perfume.

  • I really love the description of this fragrance as ‘bottled springtime’. Would love to smell it myself!

    USA here.

  • My favorite month is May and I have long wanted to bottle the fragrance of this month, with all the violets and lilacs and new greenery everywhere. I love how orris can sometimes smell like damp pavement.

    I live in the USA.

  • ClashOfTheTypos says:

I’m such a fan girl of Lie and to know he has made a perfume of my beloved Orris … well I’ve near turned into a knock kneed teen at a Beatles concert Swooooooooon ( little pee probably too) What I enjoyed about this article? everything -it transported me into a most gorgeous spring day in May -it was overwhelmingly descriptive for an iris lover – I had never heard of “iris cru” do you mean to tell me there’s something even more magical than & even more expensive Iris butter & an absolute? could it be possible? The blood orange and greens with all the mimosa mixed white flowers with the master of Lie’s perfume composing -completely descriptive it made me misty eyed. I don’t think I could much more describe how I would give myself to the perfume gods to have this perfume- what part of my soul I would sell…. But I will just leave my comment here and let whatever good karma I have be.

  • Mmmmm…a sizable dose of orris! This one was already on my “must sniff” list (which has become ridiculous this year) and this review has surely bumped it up the list. Thanks for the draw and the review. I’m in the US and this house is new to me.

  • Another great review. I feel very intrigued by this perfume house and soon I’ll purchasing some of their creations. I have to say that is quite intriguing reading about the notes used to create Iris Perle specially the violets leaf with the jasmine absolute concoction. It feels like a privilege to be able to smell such a notes mixed together. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw. Commenting from Orlando, Fl.

  • The French orris absolute grand cru is the most intriguing part of this creation and I liked how Lauryn described it. I live in the US.

  • Great review by Lauryn! This fragrance sounds amazing. I enjoyed her description of the fragrance and in particular the orris root. “The orris brings a complicated set of aromas: unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder.” I am now even more intrigued with this fragrance. I love Iris fragrances and I really want to try this one. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Thank you dear Lauryn for your absolutely beautiful review of Les Indemodables Iris Perle!

Thank you for the beautiful review Lauryn.

I really like how you talk about the transience of this scent – “There are many gorgeous iris fragrances, but none that so perfectly capture the ephemeral loveliness of a breeze-blown May morning.”

I love the use of iris along with citrus, sage and watery cucumber notes.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • I’ve always wanted to find an iris and orris perfume but they also seem so cold and cool. This one however with the opening notes seems so much warmer and dynamic and I love the description of ‘watercolour translucence’. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Michael Prince says:

Lauryn, another amazing review. This time of Les Indemodables Iris Perle. An amazing floral fragrance with fruity touches for balancing out the fragrance and the highest quality orris root extract on the market along with honeyed touches tp sweeten up the fragrance. This one sound truly amazing and I would love to own this. I am from Ohio, USA

  • I love iris. This one sounds like a much much more interesting and complex combination than your typical iris frags. Honey mimosa and violet leaves sound amazing. The most beautiful part for me was the description of the orris – “with its interesting set of aromas: unbaked sweet pastry, wet pavement, old paper, candle wax, face powder”. MA/USA
