Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique Review (Bertrand Duchaufour) 2021 + The blonde Paradise gatekeeper draw

Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Eclectique

Back to the Future: Marilyn back in the late 80s, when she was Les Bains Douches nightclub feared bouncer, holding Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique new fragrance dedicated to her (Marilyn picture via Les Bains Guerbois, Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique bottle ©Les Bains Guerbois, Les Bains facade via Les Bains – photomontage ©Emmanuelle Varron).

If you knew Paris a few decades ago, you could not have missed the legendary Bains-Douches, the trendiest nightclub in the French capital. A place already popular when created as a spa in 1885 by Francois-Auguste Guerbois, and full of artist celebrities (Proust, Zola, Renoir, Monet, etc.). But let’s go back to the end of the 20th century: all Paris was crowding rue du Bourg-l’Abbé, a stone’s throw from the Centre Pompidou and the Marais. Wealthy heirs, models, show business stars, but also anonymous people, so eager to be part of the trendy Parisian night. However, you had to cross the famous entrance gate and be dubbed by a woman who, in 1986, became its guardian: the famous Marilyn. Angelic blond but feared by all, she alone had the power to pronounce these words: “You! Welcome, have a good time!” or “You! Sorry, it’s a no. Goodbye“. Her fame largely exceeded the steps of the Bains-Douches; social networks did not exist then, but the press regularly devoted articles to Marilyn, introducing her as a modern-day Cerberus. That’s what you call a living myth!

Then time passed. In 2015, the long-unoccupied nightclub was transformed into a 5* boutique hotel by owner Jean-Pierre Marois, keen to restore Les Bains to its former glory, making it once again a friendly place, where you could sleep, eat, party, and relax 24/7. In 2016, he launched Eau de Cologne des Bains Guerbois, created by Michel Almairac. Then in 2018, it was time for an authentic collection of perfumes that has since grown from year to year: overall, 9 perfumes evoking a significant date in Les Bains history, sometimes even linked to a personality. I reviewed Les Bains Guerbois 1992 Purple Night a few months ago, an uninhibited tuberose dedicated to “Prince” Rogers Nelson created by Master Perfumer Dominique Ropion.

Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique, a one-month London Harvey Nichols exclusive will be officially launched worldwide on 27th October, is a tribute to Marilyn. “1986”, date of Marilyn’s arrival at the Bains-Douches and “Éclectique” (Eclectic) symbolic of her way of choosing the lucky ones: ultra-selective bouncer, of course, mixing rich and those with no money but great looks, flouting luxury brands or wearing thrift shop threads. Night-time eclecticism is impossible to reproduce in everyday life, so Marilyn is, no doubt, a full member of Les Bains legend. And to convey this tribute in scent, who better than Bertrand Duchaufour, already author of Les Bains Guerbois 1978 Les Bains Douches?

During Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique pre-launch at Les Bains, on 6th October, Bertrand Duchaufour confided that he, of course, was contemporary of the Marilyn period, and that he was almost sure she had not let him in more than once. Marilyn, seemed shy, but so happy to be there, confessed to us that it was quite possible, because she had to subdue her true sweet personality and sometimes be unfriendly. They were both looking at each other and it was quite moving to watch the perfumer and his muse meeting for the first time.  For me, rediscovering Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique this way (I had the chance to try it exclusively a few weeks ago in the hotel’s beautiful showroom), was a very beautiful and unique moment to live.

Bertrand Duchaufour composed Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Eclectique

When I spritzed Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique for the first time on my wrist, I was stunned by the intensity of its composition. A fresh and acidulous start, where the apple and yellow tangerine are deliciously juicy, intensified by the sweet and fruity facets of the davana. Then a sparkling and luminous treat is quickly taking on spicy aspects, with cardamom and black pepper to reinforce this openness all in freshness and intensity. I imagine myself in front of Les Bains Douches, in a long line full of noisy and stylish people, hoping to be noticed by Marilyn and thus enter the sacrosanct of the Parisian night.

Finally, Marilyn lets me in! I make my way to the dark basement of the nightclub, sweaty and deafening. Nearby VIP tables let out strong alcohol fumes. On my skin, a note of dried fruits takes on sweet accents. But not only: Bertrand Duchaufour also evokes a “whiskey vapors” accord obtained thanks to the essence of cabreuva (I Googled it: it’s a stimulant and aphrodisiac!). Here I am on the dance floor, in the middle of a colorful crowd with flowery scents; honeysuckle and geranium give off elegant and sophisticated notes, mixed with leathery facets reminiscent of the black perfecto which was an essential of the 80s wardrobe. Little by little, the warm and honeyed scents of cigarettes and cigars invade the atmosphere. In Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique, they are characterized by an addition of raw materials bringing this intoxicating roundness: broom, clary sage and honey support an addictive tobacco note that sticks to the skin, so it never leaves it. The bodies and the voices scramble on the track, under the jerky spots partially revealing the faces and the outfits that Marilyn approved. The hits follow one another, the glasses of champagne are never empty: it’s party time!

 My 1986 favorite club songs

The 1986 songs I loved to dance or sing to: The Communards Don’t Leave me this way, Mylène Farmer Libertine, Janet Jackson What have you done for me lately, Niagara L’amour à la plage, Pet Shop Boys West End girls, Prince Kiss, Run DMC/Aerosmith Walk this way, Paul Simon You can call me Al, Téléphone Le jour s’est levé – Photomontage ©Emmanuelle Varron

Time flies. 6 am: the DJ stops the music, and the white lights are turned on, harsh and blinding, interrupting the magic of that crazy night. The outfits are no longer so beautiful, the mascara has smeared, the lips have lost all traces of color. It’s Cinderella after midnight! I slowly go up the steps that lead to the corridor, then go towards the Bains-Douches entrance gate. The light of dawn is soft and welcoming. By reflex, I put my nose on my wrist: the notes of Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique are still here, intense, and the tobacco facet has not gone away, at all! I perceive the earthy warmth of opoponax combined with the intensity of patchouli, playing between vanilla and chocolate accents. Even brighter than at the height of the evening but still just as honeyed, the scent has certainly softened thanks to the musk and the roundness of amber, but sticks deliciously to my skin, addictive as possible.

Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique is par excellence a festive fragrance with a composition of great richness: luminous, joyful and bewitching, it is worn boldly on the skin, without shyness. Ultra-sensual, it is a formidable weapon of seduction with an incredible hold that leaves no one indifferent, and especially not those who wear it. It is delightful to trace Bertrand Duchafour’s creative hand, whose scents can be true love potions. It is also a beautiful tribute from Les Bains Guerbois to the mythical Marilyn, now sanctified in the bottle.

Notes: davana, apple, yellow tangerine, cardamom, black pepper, dried fruits, leather, clove, honeysuckle, broom, geranium, clary sage, honey, tobacco, opoponax, oak moss, mate tea, musk, amber, patchouli.

Disclaimer: A huge “Merci” to Les Bains Guerbois for the 1986 Éclectique sample and bottle provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • I didn’t know such famed Parisian clubs also had female bouncers. Looks like Marilyn has lot of fond memories, and Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique is an apt tribute to Marilyn’s days. The notes also sound like the composition pays tribute to the perfumes on 1980s and, more specifically, 1986. I am in US.

  • I feel that this is a great review with lots of interesting information. I live in Poland, EU. My “let’s party” song is Niagara L’Amour A La Plage.

Great review. There is a lot going on with the notes. It sounds great though. My party song would be Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus. How co

Well, my sausage fingers slipped and I accidentally posted early. Ugh. Anyways, thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • Oh my goodness this reminded me so much of myself in a past life – i was reliving many years i spent working at a nightclub!
This scent suits its name, Éclectique – it has so many different aspects and ingredients – i guess like all the many smells of the punters at the nightclub, and the alcohol and cigarettes and pheromones. I love all the aspects of Eclectique – this “festive fragrance – a formidable weapon of seduction”. YES PLEASE!

I’m in the UK and my ‘lets party’ song (one of them) would be ….
    Opus III – It’s A Fine Day 🙂

  • Let’s party song(s)?…..anything Prince! I enjoyed reading about Marilyn and the famous Les Bains Douches nightclub. Thanks for the opportunity to win another great Bertrand Duchaufour fragrance. Mich USA

  • Emmanuelle! What a fantastic & fun review! ❤️ I’m not eligible, but wanted to say how much I enjoyed learning about Les Bains Guerbois!
As for a party song… it depends on what kind of party, but a good one from around 1986 was Bust a Move by Young MC.

  • This review of Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique by Emmanuelle vividly captures the times and vibes of that bygone era. And it was interesting to read about Marilyn the bouncer. The description of evolution of notes and drydown is perfect. A lot of lovely notes in Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique. Thanks for the review and draw. Would love to try Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Éclectique. Writing from the USA.

Wow! What a great story! If I was famous they would call mine 2006! When I “ran” my local pub and said who was in and who had to go lol. It sounds amazing!

  • This is such an amazing review, Emmanuelle! I found it surprising that Marilyn and Bertrand did not meet until the launch! In any case, I wish all readers in the UK and the EU good luck. This one sounds amazing!

  • So interesting beginning and beautiful description of perfume!!! I began imagine night party in Les Bains!

Amazing knowing that you have your own parfum and how beautiful that Muse Marilyn and Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour met for the first time when the perfume launched! WOW!
I live in London, UK. Fingers crossed!!! I have no “let’s party” song.

  • First, I don’t have a “let’s party song”, and today was the first time I heard/read the term female bouncer. Was that bouncing people out or just bouncing people in? US

  • olleriksson says:

That description of the night club in the early morning is way too real! Haven’t been in that situation for years now though, but I don’t exactly miss it either. Reading reviews like this is enough for me these days! I wouldn’t mind bottomless champagne though… And of course it’s Bertrand! Everything he does I love, so I need to try this at some point.

My “let’s party” song is definitely “Blind” by Hercules & Love Affair (featuring ANOHNI nee Antony). It really gets me going! 😀

I haven’t tried anything from this brand, and just recently learned about its existence, but I’m already very curious to try their fragrances. I live in Lisbon, Portugal, EU.

  • Great Story Emmanuelle! Didn´t know about Les Bains Douches nightclub and her “Cerbere” Marilyn. There were the 80´s and many cities had this kind of night-clubs and doormen/women. Of course, nothing as glamurous as Les Bains-Douches. No one as the great Bertrand Duchaufour to translate the atmosphere of the club in a scent (Last week you introduced us into another amazing work of Mr. Duchaufour , the Naomi Goodsir Corpus Equus). Here another love potion: Ultra-sensual and seductive. I have not a single let’s party”song but your choice of The Communards “Don’t Leave me this way” made me cry for the time past! I live in Spain, EU.

  • I loved Emmanuelle description of a night out in the 1980s. I was busy working and helping raise young kids at the time, but it makes for a great fantasy. This fragrance has a lot of notes, so I appreciated Emmanuelle’s description of how they unfold. I am in the US, in North Carolina, and would choose West End Girls as my party song.

  • What a captivating scent! It’s been a while since I have read about such a varied and exciting olfactive pyramid: from juicy, fizzy tangerine to intoxicating honeysuckle, to sensual patchouli, leather and honey. And then this cabreuva…? (I have to google it too!)
Also, the story about Marilyn the Muse and Duchaufour the Nose was quite interesting.
My “Let’s Party” song is a bit lame and waaaay ahead of my times…has to be Dschinghis Khan by the band with the same name. How catchy can a tune get?
I am in the EU, Denmark.
    Thanks!

  • Thanks Emmanuelle for the great review. I like the party mood of it and I think that Bertrand Duchaufour is one of the most talented noses. My favourite party song is … Beastie Boys – (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party). I live in EU.

  • I’m happy to see Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Eclectique adheres to the joyous, larger than life 1980s perfume aesthetic. The fruits, honey, tobacco and patchouli tell me it’s a fragrance with presence and an evening vibe. Of course the great Bertrand Duchaufour is the nose so it has to be good. Favorite party jam is Let’s Go Crazy by the incomparable Prince. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Describing 1986 Éclectique as a night at the famed club after Marilyn deemed you worthy is genius. This sounds fabulous and unlike anything I currently have. I’m in NC USA and my ’80s party songs would have to include Love Shack and Let’s Dance.

  • It sounds like a little time travel for me, beck to the older Paris for listening some live musics. The fragrance itself sounds wonderful. Be bottle looks oldschool but the notes sounds modern and classy at tha same time. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • This review really made me excited about the perfume. I absolutely love progression in fragrances, and this one is so clever! Whilst reading how the fragrance performed, it was so vivid and really makes me want to try this on my own skin to see the nuances that can’t fully be expressed in a review. However, this review was absolutely lovely. As for the party song, any 2010s pop hit always seems to work for me. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • Wow.. first of all – very interesting and great review, Emmanuelle. Thank you. Second – look at those notes! Would absolutely love to try this! Sounds amazing. My old school party song is Technotronic – “Pump Up The Jam”.
    UK.

Thank you for the great review Emmanuelle.

This is such a big, bold, flirty and audacious fragrance. Dominique has created a fantastic ode to a special person from this time period. Her quiet, firm and perhaps brusque exterior that belies a soft hearted interior is captured so beautifully in the opening notes.

I love how the evolution of the fragrance explores the steaminess and excitement of the nightclub atmosphere, once you have been given permission to enter.

My Party song is the Kygo remix of Seinabo Sey Younger

Emmanuelle’s review was an amazing journey and I am grateful to have been taken on it! It was great to learn about the mecca of the Parisian nightlife of the 80s and the legendary gatekeeper of paradise turned muse. The description of how the fragrance develops and lasts on the skin makes me crave spraying it asap and wearing it boldly and happily as the notes are just heavenly. My “let’s party” song is “Groove is in the heart” by Dee -Lite.

  • Nice review, I’m intrigued now. I’ve got 2ml of all the others, so I will try this when I can. I’ve been impressed by the variety and the consistency so far. My party song is usually ‘Better the devil you know’ by Kylie Minogue for some old school vibes. I live in Cornwall, UK

  • EmmanI am one who loves the intensity of a composition as well. I also do the same reflex many times throughout the day or evening, nose to wrist. Although I have not been to Paris I loved the information I obtained from this article. Marilyn was a woman with all the power at Bains-Douches while she was the gate keeper. I adore the amazing Bertrand Duchaufour. Emmanuelle, very well done! My party song is Uptown Funk I am in the USA

  • Not eligible for the giveaway, but I loved that Emanuelle took me back to my high school years in the 1980’s. 1986 Eclectique sounds like a wonderful fragrance to wear and reminisce. All the high school dances, friends and first dates is what seems wrapped up with a huge bow. Which reminds me of my favorite song from the 80’s. Madonna’s Lucky Star (1983).

  • Bains-Douches, Olivia Valere & Regine’s were all icons of 80s nightlife in Paris. Thank you Emmanuelle for the momentary time travel back to that golden Paris decade. Your article evokes so many memories that I hope Éclectique could make us partially relive. As for the party song, need I remind you of Vanessa Paradis Joe le taxi? 🙂 Hat tip to you for the great review. VA, USA

  • Les Bains Guerbois 1986 Eclectique seems to revive a lost ‘let’s party’ wibe by the magic touch of Bertrand Duchafour’genius, it’s the first time i hear about cabreuva, and i’m excited to experience it, hope to win! From Romania with love!

  • What a great story! I’m guessing she’d let him in the club now. This reminded me of my college years and dancing all night in clubs or at raves. It’s a wonder my brain survived it all. I’m in the US and “Good Times” by Chic is one of those songs that I could never sit out.

  • I’m interested in trying a fragrance release from this fragrance house. I wouldn’t be sure what to expect with any of their releases, but I think that I might end up discovering something which might be interesting. They seem to have some of the most notable perfumers working for them. I’m also interested in the list of ingredients for this fragrance. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I’m not familiar with Les Bains Guerbois brand . I like how 1896 Éclectique is inspired by the night time , ambery lights , people from all over the world , and ages having fun in a premium and wild Parisian private Club. Cardamom, tobacco, patchouli and Bertrand Duchaufour as perfumer , 1986 Éclectique deserves its own name.
Thank you Emmanuelle Varron , Les Bains Guerbois

Lovely review Emmanuelle! I really felt transported by all the history she packed into the review, with her descriptions of the legendary Paris nightclub, it’s transformation into a fine hotel, and it’s progression into scents. What a wonderful read – it really makes me want to try this fragrance!
