Over the past few months, my recent sniffing sessions with a colleague has broadened my olfactive knowledge and tastes. These meetings surprisingly conjured emotions and summoned memories with fragrances that I had forgotten or had never smelled. I observed this in my latest olfactory favourites: complex constructions, where the facets unfold while taking their time, exposing the raw materials under the lights and  offering their best profile. Smelling these beauties can easily be compared to admiring precious paintings or sculptures in the most renowned museums. Perfume as a work of art: this is my point. You won’t be surprised to read that now, I spend some time on websites dedicated to “vintage” fragrances, which gave me the opportunity to buy Jacques Fath Love, Weil Zibeline and Balmain Miss Balmain.

The new Le Galion L’Astre is created in the style that now holds me spellbound. There is a timelessness that distinguishes it from “here today and gone tomorrow” trends,  withstanding the decades and even better, it refers to formerly magnified accords that I can now only “sniff” during my dedicated olfaction sessions with perfumes that no longer exist today. Do you like to leave a memorable scent trail, something powerful and with “sillage”? Here you are! Do you rail against linear perfumes that delivers everything barely sprayed? Welcome to an olfactory world of a thousand colors and shades of subtle harmony! Would you resist introducing such a treasure to those around you who consider perfume to be an art? Le Galion L’Astre which has unanimously made the eyes of my colleagues and perfumer friends shine and nostrils tingle.

This miracle is due to Nicolas Chabot, owner of Aether, Headspace and who “refounded” Le Galion in 2014. Le Galion is a renowned French brand whose famous perfumer Paul Vacher (Lanvin Arpège, Dior Miss Dior, Dior Diorling, and many more) was the owner and creator of the most beautiful references… including Le Galion Sortilège (1936) which, two decades later, would have the sublime actress Ava Gardner as its muse. The piquant cat eyes brunette of wild and sophisticated sensuality, was an ideal ambassador, and Paul Vacher made no mistake in entrusting her with this role. So much so that the incandescent John Ford “Mogambo” heroine asked the perfumer to compose a bespoke fragrance for her. And so was born Le Galion L’Astre, whose formula has of course remained secret for many, many years. It was on what should have been Ava Gardner 100th anniversary (she was born on December 24, 1922) that Le Galion and the Ava Gardner Trust joined forces to bring back L’Astre to life; the magician behind the new version is Rodrigo Flores-Roux, (Michelyn once nicknamed him “Rodripedia” because of his extensive  knowledge of vintage perfumes and their composition). As a true master he can use  21st century raw materials while preserving the soul and spirit of a vintage creation. Givaudan’s Vice President of Perfumery worked from archives kept by the Trust and gave it a second and now public life, with a contemporary touch that avoids the pitfall of smelling “old-fashioned.”

Le Galion L’Astre crackles with sensory fireworks from the first seconds. One can perceive that the flowers are at the center of the composition, with touches of spices to raise the temperature, and some aromatic notes to give it a wild aspect. The jasmine – tuberose – ylang-ylang – orange blossom quartet may well be a classic of perfumery, but here it is imbued with both a light and erotic spirit… and I gladly imagine myself rolling on a bed of petals with that irresistible fragrance. Cardamom and red ginger bring a spicy aspect that oscillates between freshness and opulence, without breaking the floral harmony. On my skin, the tuberose takes on a lot of breadth and gives a carnal twist that fits naturally with the amber and leathery accords that open over the minutes. The temperature does not drop but modulates in an olfactory score playing more willingly on nuances, gradually letting the tolu balm release its creamy and woody facets and give body to a vanilla more focused on sweetness than gluttony. Le Galion L’Astre seems to follow the rhythm of the heartbeat… irresistible when you wear it. Also notable is its modernity with a nod to the markers that are now attributed to “vintage” perfumes. This fragrance inspired by Ava Gardner is a welcome perfume in 2023… it does not revolutionize codes, it magnifies them.

Notes: grilled sweet fennel, cardamom (India), red ginger (Laos), wild thyme (Spain), jasmine absolute “vintage”, ylang-ylang (Comoros), tuberose concrete (India), orange blossom (Morocco), amber, suede, tolu balsam (Honduras), vanilla bean (Madagascar).

Disclaimer: Milles mercis to Le Galion for L’Astre laboratory sample provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Senior Editor’s Note: Le Galion L’Astre is dressed in the beautiful bottle originally created by Paul Dinand and reworked in 2022 by the designer with his grandson, Jules. A bottle with generous and sensual shapes, with retro reliefs but with a modernity that is very much of our time.

First of all Happy Birthday, Emmanuelle, all the best wishes to you!
What attracts me the most in the review is the fact that this is a reimagined story, the dedication to Ava Gardner has found its embodiment in our time in 2023! Even more enticing and mysterious is the fact that this is a modern reworking of a formula that has remained a secret for decades. And only Ava Gardner Foundation and her heirs, had access to these archives.
I think that Ava Nardner would appreciate this modern perfume, reminiscent of the luxurious aromas of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
    Thanks for the wonderful review!

  • Happy birthday Emmanuelle 🙂

I’m intrigued by the way this perfume was unearthed from the vault and reimagined for the present day without revealing its secrets and compromising what made it such a compelling scent to begin with! I hope to get a real sense of the original heart of the fragrance with some contemporary flourishes.

I am based in the USA!

  • I enjoyed the intriguing details and interesting facts. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. Happy birthday Emmanuelle!

  • First of all, happy birthday to Emmanuelle! 🙂 Yes, I do like to leave a memorable scent trail and am a fan of the perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux. I am really intrigued by how this vintage perfume was recreated with a contemporary touch. From EU.

  • I loved how Emmanuelle thoroughly captures everything I want to know about a fragrance — describing the inspiration for and concept behind the fragrance, the notes and the experience of wearing it on skin. And I totally agree on the gorgeousness of the bottle.

Happy Birthday! I liked the wording that the fragrance follows the rhythm of a heartbeat. I love the smell of this floral quartet and I am excited to see how cardamom and red ginger will interact with them.

I love vintage style fragrances. Modern ones are too linear- I totally agree. This sounds like one I must sample!

  • Happiest of birthdays Emmanuelle! Love anything that is vintage or born out of vintage notes. Sounds sexy. Would love to try. I’m in US.

  • I only know Le Galion by name so the review made me so curious about the fragrance, especially because it lists few of my favorite notes: ylang, orange blossom and tolu balm. From the description, I imagine it to be a feminine with a twist fragrance. I live in CA, US

  • The description sounds so sensual: ” I gladly imagine myself rolling on a bed of petals with that irresistible fragrance. Cardamom and red ginger bring a spicy aspect that oscillates between freshness and opulence, without breaking the floral harmony.” And I am truly intrigued by spices over flowers: grilled sweet fennel, cardamom (India), red ginger (Laos), wild thyme (Spain), tolu balsam (Honduras), vanilla bean (Madagascar).
I like Le Galion brand for their style – classic/conservative but with unexpected twist.
I live in the EU and would love to win L’Astre, thank you!

  • Beautiful review by Emmanuelle! I love how she describes the timelessness of Le Galion L’Astre that distinguishes it from “here today and gone tomorrow” trends, withstanding the decades of time.
What attracts me the most is that the flowers (jasmine absolute, ylang-ylang and tuberose concrete – one better than the other) are at the center of the composition, with touches of spices to raise the temperature, and some aromatic notes to give it a wild aspect.

  • Happy fragrant birthday Emmanuelle! May you enjoy the best in life 🙂
I’m so happy when they give new life to these legendary and quite mystical perfumes. L’Astre sounds exquisite: I’m a sucker for white flowers and then the spices and animalic notes which amp them up and help them carry sound stunning. Ginger and cardamom are two spices (and notes!) that I love, and tuberose is my all time favorite flower, so this must be a winning combination.
    Regards from the EU.

  • Whilst some deride the ‘old fashioned’, I’m so glad to see its value recognised and celebrated, here.

Thanks to the AMAZING review by Emanuelle I can almost feel the sexy, erotic and carnal vibe of this floral composición. Floral perfumes are my Favourite and I LOVE tuberose and ylang ylang, both presents in the composition.
The figure of Ava Gadnes as a symbol for this perfumes makes me think of glamour and elegance and I think this spicy floral fragrance should be.
I would like to give a beearlied HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Emanuelle and of course I Will be here on the 3rd to congratulate her again!

  • “vintage”, ylang-ylang (Comoros), tuberose concrete (India), orange blossom (Morocco), amber, suede, tolu balsam (Honduras), vanilla bean (Madagascar. I am really fascinated by the notes and the fact this fragrance is still resonant in 2023. This sounds like a majestic concoction. Wishing Emmanuel many happy returns. I’ve been a fan of Ava Gardner since I was a child when my sisters and I would watch Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. Ava has always been a symbol of elegance to me and I can only imagine the bouquet in this fragrance radiates her magic. Moving into Spring in Minnesota, I always am drawn to wearing florals and my nose always covets the elegance that vintage florals can present. When you said the tuberose dries down to its amber and leathery accords I was sold!

  • Happy Birthday Emmanuelle! You share my husband’s birthday! Your review was so interesting as I’ve never heard of Le Galion; however, I have long been a fan of vintage and have always felt that I was born in the wrong decade! Ava Gardner is iconic and the notes in the fragrance with with spices, mixed with jasmine ending in warm notes sounds like a scent story I’d love to wear! I live in FL in US.

  • I really enjoyed reading about the story behind this perfumes rebirth- it sounds like it was quite the journey! I also really enjoyed reading your questions to lead us into this perfumes story! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thank you for this interesting introduction, Emmanuelle. Very glad to witness the great revival of the old house Le Galion. For me, Rodrigo Flores-Roux’s approaches on flowers are always very convincing. Look forwards to experiencing L’Astre, with its new life but vintage spirit!
Happy (belated) birthday! Love from San Mateo, California.

  • Happy birthday Emmanuelle! I really like the concept of refounding this amazing house Le Galion giving modernity to its fragrances. L’Astre sounds amazing and tuberose is one of my favorite notes in a perfume. Thank you for the opportunity to try it!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • The notes list is amazing! Grilled fennel, wild thyme, red ginger and tuberose concrete are some outstanding components that make for a really interesting and luxurious composition. Ava Gardner is the perfect muse for such a feminine perfume and the bottle, of course, is gorgeous. Happy Birthday Emmanuelle! MD, USA.

I really enjoyed the history around both the scent and Ava Gardner’s connection to Le Galion, as it’s a house that I don’t know much about! I also loved the passionate and adoring review of the scent. Nouveau-retro is a favorite genre of mine, and I appreciate Emmanuelle describing the classical structure infused with smooth, modern touches. This sounds gorgeous and well balanced and Rodrigo’s scents are always big loves for me. Thank you so much for the generous draw! And happy birthday, Emmanuelle! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Happy Birthday, Emmanuelle!!
I think that Le Galion L’astre is a fantastic fragrance that everyone should discover, including myself.
I am huge fan of Rodrigo’s work and seeing he is the nose in this one makes me ansious.

  • Happy Belated Birthday Emmanuelle!! The opening paragraph of Emmanuelle’s review of Le Galion L’Astre reminded me of the Japanese ceremony of koh-do and the skill of art appreciation, in perfumery, music, wine appreciation, and so on. It takes time, patience, and the knowledge and developing of the eyes, or ears, or nose, to appreciate these arts, and most of the time, one has to learn from teachers, books, videos, etc. to get to that stage. Le Galion L’Astre seems to be a classic perfume, resurrected for the current times. I love the notes in Le Galion L’Astre. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. From continental United States.

  • Lumi Ruby says:

Tried a sample of L’Astre today actually… yesterday was L’Ame Perdue and Tilleul. I am pleased with the new versions of these vintage iconic perfumes from Le Galion. Bravo Mr, Flores-Roux and Chabot – the results so far are promising! As the review says – vintage but with a modern flair. The tolu in L’Astre is particularly good quality and overall a seamless blend of natural materials and synthetics, the sillage and projection are considerable but not screechy.

  • This perfume was unearthed from the vault and reimagined for the present day without revealing its secrets and compromising what made it such a compelling scent to begin with! I hope to get a real sense of the original heart of the fragrance with some contemporary flourishes. From PA, USA

  • Happy Birthday Emmanuelle!! Have a glorious new year!
Oh my goodness!! Look at these notes and I love when the ingredients’s regions are noted because it absolutely does make a difference in the perfume! I just love how the supporting notes are truly the Joie de vivre types – ginger, pepper, wild thyme and then the choices of softening and sensuality are grilled warm fennel?! Yes!! Tolu balsam, vanilla and amber. I just know this has heart, sass and beauty! Like Ava. What an icon she is!
Thank you so much for the giveaway, I hope to win this lovely creation.

This is one creation that my wife and I will have to get our noses on. Sounds absolutely wonderful 🙂

Thanks for the nice review Emmanuelle!

The notes in this are such a classic mix of old meet new. I love the use of big vintage florals, tempered and accented by the use of spices in the fennel, with an ambery vanillic touch in the base.

Vintage fragrances are so neat – olfactory ghosts is what I think of them.

The bottle is also very beautiful – very retro.

    Belated Happy Birthdaty.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love Emmanuelle’s very descriptive breakdown of how the perfume smells to her. The note listing is interesting and the bottle design is beautiful. I wonder about this one …
Thank you for the opportunity, Southern California here.

  • I appreciate the strong stance on linear perfumes. They can smell great, but I wear a fragrance for the complexity and progression I can enjoy throughout the wear. I also liked how Emmanuelle broke down the floral accords used in Le Galion L’Astre; I like florals, but I often have trouble identifying individual floral notes and parsing them from other elements of the fragrance. Excellent review!

I’m in the USA. Happy belated birthday Emmanuelle!

  • Happy birthday Emmanuelle!!! Salute Aires. What I enjoyed from Emmanuelle’s review of ((Le Galion L’Astre)))* was it’s a modern take on vintage perfumes. Also it has cardamom and ginger giving a spicyness that goes back and forth between fresh and opulent without breaking the floral harmony. Brilliant. Thanks for the amazing giveaway. Greetings from US.
