Laboratorio Olfattivo Nerosa Review (David Maruitte) + Smoky Florals Draw

With their inky bottles, ebony labels and complex, brooding scents, Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Black Collection make me think of film noir night times, when a lone lamplight casts shadows on a deserted city street and footsteps echo somewhere out of sight. But smelling them, their high concentration of fragrance and intricate constructions is more like a Glenn Gould piano piece, full of emotional intensity and variation. The latest addition, Laboratorio Olfattivo Nerosa – whose name conjures dark blooms – joins Vanhera, Sacreste, and Nerotic like the fourth movement to a symphony. In the hands of Sozio perfumer David Maruitte, Nerosa is an beautifully constructed, moody incense that balances keenly on a fulcrum of saffron, rose and spice.

Roberto Drago Creative Director of  Laboratorio Olfattivo

Nerosa’s name suggests it is sooty rose fragrance, and certainly, rose and dark notes are prominent from start to conclusion. The opening is a powdery whoosh of some of the most elegant saffron around: bitter, dusty but warm and almost vinous. Close on its heels is a thick, gauzy rose, smelling of everything pink, and oud; sensual, its rough edges smoothed out. But before Laboratorio Olfattivo Nerosa heads squarely into classic Arabian territory, it shifts; dry, smoky tendrils of birch and patchouli wrap around the top notes, and a strange milkiness comes through which eventually emerges as nutmeg. These notes add some crackle and sharpness to the dense opening. Peppery geranium is a neat complement to the spices at the heart of the perfume, a perfect counterpoint to that ballerina rose.

Up till now, Nerosa veered feminine, but, as the birch, elemi and patchouli comes forward, it now teeters between bold smoke and wood notes that give the fragrance a slightly masculine edge. Then, those notes ebb as the middle brings an almost huggable softness. Chewy, sweet amber mingles with piney elemi and labdanum create a soft, rich incense-like cloud. Against this velvety backdrop, the bitter and piquant notes of spice glint like specks of ruby.

By the time Nerosa has fully opened, there’s a lot going on: resins, incense, flowers, spice and animalic notes are all manifesting. But they walk a taut tightrope that keeps each from muddling the others: leather and castoreum add an animalic dimension that is kept tamped down; spices simmer quietly, resins resonate. Wood notes enter towards the dry-down, adding a basso profundo weight to the base that turns slightly soapy right at the end.

Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Nerosa is sooty, rich, spicy and resinous resins all at the same time, each aroma playing a well-orchestrated part. For lovers of intense, smoky florals, it hits all the right notes.

Notes: Clove, saffron, nutmeg, labdanum absolute, guaiacwood, rose, ylang ylang, geranium, oud, amber, elemi resinoide, leather, vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood, benzoin absolute, castoreum absolute, nagarmotha, birch leaf.

  • What appeals to me the most is the resinous resins and the floral notes with a hint of animalic and incense notes because I like rich, resinous, floral, and a touch of uniqueness in the perfumes I use! Unfortunately, I have yet to try any of the perfumes from Laboratorio Olfattivo and hopefully this will be my first time! Thanks for the opportunity!

Laboratiorio Olfattivo is staying true to its DNA. Even when the focus is on rose, the inky, earthy elements are still present in Nerosa. Smoky florals are intriguing because of the contrast between the notes. Have not tried anything from the house yet but the reviews do indicate a certain theme that runs through all offerings, also affirmed by the dark bottles. I am in US.

  • sassylime says:

Rose + smoke + woods + oud? This sounds like my dream perfume. The review gave me the olfactory equivalent of thirst. I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing any of Laboratorio Olfattivo’s scents, but I would love to.

  • This sounds awesome! I love smokey scents. Not familiar with smokey florals, but it sounds great. I also love scents that turn soapy in the later dry down. I have never sampled anything from this house but would love to of course. Thank you for the chance at drawing! US

The careful balance between potentially overpowering notes sounds very intriguing. The presentation looks so simple, yet mysterious and alluring at the same time. I have not sampled from Laboratiorio Olfattivo, but I will be soon. I'm in the US.

  • If it creates an incense cloud, I definitely want it. I'll be looking into this brand because I love dark "brooding" scents. Thanks for another fabulous draw! USA

  • It appeals to me that this fragrance apparently oscillates between feminine and masculine, sweet and bitter. And that it's appearently an intense experience.
I have not tried any Laboratioria Olfattivo perfumes yet!

I am living in the EU, Germany

  • This sounds right up my alley! I love roses and especially dark ones, which are enveloped in ambers, resins and balsams. I believe the composition most often turns to be classy, classic, wearable in many conditions, genderless, safe and specific at the very same time. Unfortunately I havent tested any Laboratorio olfattivo fragrances, so i’m looking forward for that to change with this one! I’m from Romania, thanks for the draw!

  • damianachi says:

I love rose and enjoy its many facets when combined with other notes. This beautiful review perfectly conveys the richness and depth of this perfume. And what a beautiful name! I haven’t had the pleasure of trying any fragrances of this house but would love to. I live in the USA.

I never tried any perfume from this house but after reading  the Lauryn's review I just saying that this perfume have to be tested…it seems to be a well organized orchestra!

  • The smokey florals mixed with a resinous scent seems quite exciting, I once found this scent that combined these notes spectacularly, sadly I don’t recall what fragrance it was, I‘m hoping this is something in the same ballpark.

    Thanks, I‘m from Germany.

Lovely moody review Lauryn. There's nothing cosier than a spicy amber for our cool autumn/winter months and this one fits the bill. I haven't tried anything from this house, but from what I've just read, I think I have to now. I live in Australia.

  • This was a great and through review, with every note of the fragrance described to beautifully and shows how they all mingle togther with out overpowering each other, and I have never heard of amber being described as chewy and sweet but I love that and these notes are a lot but they seem to come together very well! I have never tried any fragrances from this house but I would love to try this fragrance. I live in the USA!

  • Incense, rose, smoke  sounds strangely beautiful

    I live in the USA

i really loved the words and the photos

  • "Dark flowers" are one of my favourite abstract olfactory groups 😉 This looks incredibly complex and beautiful. I'd love to try this one. I haven't try any of Laboratorio Olfattivo scents so far. I live in Poland.

  • What's appealing is some of the listed notes such as clove, saffron and geranium. US

  • taskphorce says:

-Hello. What a wonderful review. It paints a picture for us readers to understand what this fragrance has to offer (very descriptive article.)….but OMG, The notes that are contained in this fragrance are absolutely right up my alley and contain some of my favorite accords:  Rose, gaiac, saffron, oud, vetiver, geranium, dark florals…:) 🙂 🙂 I love the simplistic design.

-The only fragrance I have tried and loved was Cozumel from the house of Laboratorio Olfattivo.

I live in the USA. Thank you for the offer to win a bottle.

  • You had me at Saffron ! No really, this sound like a bewitching blend of dark and sensual notes. This fragrance has some dark or interesting spice and florals that could give an edge to this complex composition and it sounds superb. I am in love with wolfsbane by quartana, so this might be a new love. Amouge interlude for example, does not have the comlexity or facets I would love.

I live in the USA and have not tried their fragrances, even though I have wanted to for some time !

  • i have never tried this house before but love rose oud combos.  This is sounds different with the smokey aspects which I really love in frgrance.  The patchouli also sounds good with the rose and oriental spices.  Really interested in this one.  Good review and I am in the US.  Thanks as always for the opportunity to win in the draw.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Oooh yes please! Clove and nutmeg are two of my favorite notes… this sounds delicious and spicy and dark. Never tried any others from this house… yet! I'm in the USA!

  • The combination of rose, incense and spices is extremely interesting in my opinion, I would love to have the chance to try it.

    Thank you for the giveaway.

  • Thanks for the giveaway and review. From it expect it to be a really shifting and dynamic scent.

    Regards from Switzerland.

  • Great review, i’ve never had the chance to try anything from this house but i’ve heard only nice thing about them and their fragrances. This is a great chance so thank you for this nice giveaway. I am in the EU.

  • On the surface this seems quite a conventional composition: rose, saffron, patchouli, with a bit of oud thrown in for interest. Which would make it similar to Rose Boheme (Providence Perfume) and others. I'd be fascinated to see how the spicy and smoky aspects work out. I've been looking for a smoky floral, particularly rose, for some time. For example, there's Smolderose (January Scent Project), which however veers too bright for me, or Moth (Zoologist) which is stunning, but rather sweet and has rose playing only a minor part, although it has very nicely subdued smoke. Soapy dry-down I associate mostly with lavender scents, but perhaps its the benzoine that can seem soapy? Anyway, great review promising olfactory adventure.

This would be a new house for me to try. I am in Germany.

  • I have never tried anything from this brand. Nerosa sounds very unique and interesting from the base of the review. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • The “Nerosa heads squarely into classic Arabian territory” got me. I thoroughly enjoy heady, smoky, oud rose scents so I would like to try this one as well. Never tried anything from this house before. Thank you! From Finland.

I’ve never tried anything from this house but I love a smoky floral. Your description has me tempted to just buy a bottle. I will definitely be looking into some samples from this house. Sounds just divine for a cold day when you need some warmth. I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • NiceVULady says:

I have many smokey scents that I love , but I do not have any fragrances from this house.  I love the saffron and the rose together and I also like the complexity which Lauryn describes so beautifully.  Thanks for a lovely review and a generous draw.  I'm in the USA

  • I have never tried anything from this house. I love that …’Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Nerosa is sooty, rich, spicy and resinous resins all at the same time, each aroma playing a well-orchestrated part…’

    I live in USA.

  • Lauryns review was great. I love the idea of resinous, inky and smoky notes. Rich and florals to softy the touch. Just amazing to me. I have never tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivos so I would love to get my nose on Nerosa to set a trend. I live in CA, USA. One Love!!!

  • The smokey florals mixed with a resinous scent, like saffron, rose together with  amber seems quite alluring to smell.

Unfortunately I never had the chance to experience any perfume from Laboratorio Olfattivo House.

I live in EU and I thank you for the opportunity to win such an exceptional perfume.

  • This was a great review and i love rose, geranium and leather in fragrances, so all 3 notes in just one perfume sounds perfect! Didnt try any perfumes from this house yet! 😀 I live in Romania.

  • I haven't had the pleasure to try any Laboratorio Olfattivo, however the house name itself tempts the olfactory system. The minimalist design of the bottle combined with the woody, rich, noir tones create a perfect classical meant for the true bold yet elegant style. The name, 'Nerosa' summons in mind a smoky, intense fog, while all the other elements harmoniously sink in this fog. A perfect film noir where the rose plays the main role and embraces this exquisite dark theme.

  • A piano sonata in the night,  loneliness, darkness and mystery…

The review reminds me of  George Cukor's Gaslight movie. In my mind, the notes of this perfume embody the Ingrid Bergman's refinement.

I've never tried the fragrances of this house. Thank you for this opportunity. EU

  • doveskylark says:

It's spring and I have tried to wear pretty floral scents, but I guess I have a dark soul and I will just naturally gravitate toward sooty fragrances. I love the way this one sounds so resinous and mysterious. Oh, and that saffron. I have heard so many good things about Kashnoir from this house, how narcotic it is.

    I live in the USA.

  • At first you had my interest, now you have my attention.  Smoky florals?  Yes please.  Very vivid review.  I've never sampled this brand!  Canada.

  • Ooh, this sounds fabulous! "Intense, smoky florals"? Yes, please!!! Love all those spicy notes, along with rose and woody notes. I've never tried anything from this perfume house before. Would love to score this perfume!

    I live in the USA.

  • I could almost smell the notes as I was reading the beautiful review. Lauryn, you must really like music since there are clever comparisons to the notes "playing a well-orchestrated part", or the perfume having a basso profundo. Any perfume with incense and/or birch (tar or leaf) gets my attention, I'd be delighted to win this one.

Thank you and Laboratorio Olfattivo for the draw. I've tried nothing from this house so far but it's going to change. I'm from Russia

  • I love the sense of musical synesthesia that David tries to imbue in his short, but quite piquant review. Rose and oud combos are always my favorite, but with the addition of the birch, elemi, and patchouli together with the incense this perfume really whets my fancy. It would be a pleasure to own a bottle of this fragrance. Thanks so much once again for your generous giveaways! I'm in Oregon, USA.

  • Lauryn's review is excellent! I love a smoky fragrance and I am intrigued with the fragrance being a smoky rose with incense and resins. I am always fascinated with perfume and music. I wonder how this beautiful fragrance orchesta plays. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • citizenkage says:

I haven't tried this house yet but the notes sound fantastic on this one. Resins, incense and florals with a woodsy dry down sounds fantastic. Would love to try. USA.

  • Thank you for the review and the draw. I have to confess that I tend to read ahead to the descriptions of the notes before reading the rest of the review, and in this case, I'm glad I read the entire review because the notes alone wouldn't have caught my interest. Lauryn's description of the way the scent opened changed that perception. This is something I'd like to get my nose on now.

  • This one sounds incredible (can I just say how much I love the bottle too!) I like the idea of smoke and saffron and have been pleased with offerings from Laboratorio Olfattivo in the past – Nirmal is my favorite so far. I’m in the US and would love to win this scent. Many thanks!

  • Haven’t tried this fragrance or anything else from this House. This sounds like a good Smokey fragrance. Not much experience with Smokey fragrances. Nice looking bottle and seems like a dark fragrance. Thanks, US

  • I love smoky incense and dark spicy roses so this goes right up my alley. I have never tried anything from this brand but the Black Collection looks extremely interesting. I live in the EU. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Wow, smoky spicy roses! The notes and the concept sound incredibly appealing. I've not tried anything from this house before though. I live in the USA. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  • I love smoky florals so this sounds right up my alley. Thank you for the chance for a giveaway. I'm in TX USA
