In the enchanting land of Kerala, India, Onam is a vibrant, ten-day annual harvest festival. The floral Rangoli, also known as Pookkalam, is created with gathered blossoms of various flower varieties, designed and decorated into patterns on the floor, much like a flower mat. Families gather to adorn their homes with detailed floral compositions, each petal carefully positioned to create designs that reflect the beauty of nature and the joy of togetherness. Rangolis are much more than a decoration; they are a celebration of life, family, love, and tradition. A new fragrance in the Tales of India Collection La Fleur by Livvy Onam is designed to capture the spirit of the celebration, symbolizing the very heart of Onam. It features a unique note of basmati rice and the floral rangoli that would transform the air into a breeze of joy.

La Fleur by Livvy Onam unfurls like a delicate blossom beginning with a sunny hint of lime and citrus, refreshing and invigorating— evoking the first light of dawn breaking over lush fields. The citrus opening revives the senses, but soon the magic begins to unfold in the heart of the fragrance: a lovely floral bouquet of jasmine, hibiscus, and lotus. Onam’s base notes are subtle yet profound, a serenity that lingers close to the skin.

As Onam’s top notes take flight, I find myself veiled in a fragrant cloud that feels fresh, uplifting, and inviting. My wrists subtly scented with a gentle kiss of lime and mandarin awaken my senses with a fleeting brightness that invites me to lean closer. I imagine settings where families come together to assemble their floral rangoli, composing motifs that tell stories of their roots, resolve, and the bonds that unite them. Onam captures the core of moments where there is joy shared in the act of creation—each petal, each shade, a kaleidoscopic illustration of love and unity.

At the heart of La Fleur By Livvy Onam, it has a remarkable note of the florals of India. Jasmine, with its sweet, playful, intoxicating aroma, reminds me of a lover’s gentle touch, and hibiscus, sweet and delicate, brings a solar floral scent with a hint of coconut. The tranquility of the lotus, a symbol of purity and enlightenment, adds a calming presence, with its aquatic floral adding an airy, delicate touch, grounding the other blossoms.

As La Fleur by Livvy Onam settles into the base notes; it has a remarkable note of basmati rice, forming its foundation. The rice note threads elegantly into the floral celebration, blending with the ethereal blooms to create a comforting depth. It is inviting, and elicits images of the feasts that assuredly accompany the festivities—the rich aromatic dishes, and sweet delicacies that fill the air, transporting me to the very heart of the festival. The addition of the golden threads of saffron brings in an exotic, spicy touch, alongside the basil, the faintest hint of the creaminess of coconut. The notes of vetiver, labdanum, oakmoss, and sandalwood introduce the earthy notes blending with the floral elements, the rich, rangoli comes to life, celebrating both the vibrancy of life and the tranquility of tradition. Onam becomes a scented memento to the festival itself—an irresistible dance of scents that is the joy of togetherness, the beauty of nature, and the cherished memories of celebration.

La Fleur by Livvy Onam, with its unique combination of fresh lime and citrus, intricately blended fragrant florals, and the essence of basmati rice, along with its base notes, is my invitation to celebrate life’s most beautiful moments, to honor tradition, and to welcome the joy that blooms when we come together. As you wear it, you will carry a piece of Onam with you, a fragrant reminder that life, much like a floral rangoli, is best enjoyed when shared. I appreciate the art of subtlety in Onam and the understated elegance that feels as intimate as a second skin.

Notes: Lime, Mandarin, a floral rangoli with Jasmine, Hibiscus, Lotus, Basmati Rice tincture, Saffron, Basil, Coconut, Vetiver, Labdanum, Oakmoss, and Sandalwood.

I eat basmati rice regularly because in my opinion is the best rice you can find. I can tell the ingredients used in this scent are of the utmost quality and together yield the beautiful final result that is Onam.i was not familiar with Rangoli and it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back here because you always learn something new in the world of perfumery. This sounds like a citric and floral heaven with a touch of spice, very in line with Indian culture. I’m located in the USA.

A lot of perfumes with rice notes will state “streamed rice” accord. I’m wondering if, instead of steamed rice, La Fleur’s basmati rice tincture has the smell of uncooked rice still in the sack. It is intriguing me. It might even be dusty or powdery.

    Hi there,

Last night I enjoyed a new indie sweet vermouth that had a very subtle note of coconut on the back; turns out it had some coconut oil in the recipe. This note played so nicely with the citrus and herbal; I’m imagining Onam might hit me a bit like this…And lately I am also intrigued by any rice notes, so I look forward to checking into this one soon. Thank you so much for this lovely giveaway.

  • That Rangoli was inspiring how gorgeous! Makes me want to do a hook rug of it. This fragrance sounds lovely. I love a beautiful floral fragrance and I’ve been really enjoying rice notes. And of course saffron and sandalwood are quintessential Indian. Thank you for the generous giveaway. I am located in the U.S.

  • I live in the USA and am getting married to a malayali so I am very curious to experience this take on Onam’s scent.

  • You don’t often see basmati rice as a note in perfume. It is very distinct. But with the addition of coconut, lime, and especially jasmine it sounds particularly Indian in nature. In maryland.

How dreamy to enjoy a multitude of flowers presented in a way that is absolutely beautiful, but it treats me. The most is the base notes of a basmati rice. I would feel honored to enjoy a bottle of this fine tune fragrance dedicated to culture. I am located in the USA.

  • This sounds lovely and redolent of the scents of Kerala. I’m familiar with the festival of Onam through a college friend. Her family was from near Kerala and she shared pictures of their celebration, including the family’s pookkalam, with us. The floral rangoli along with the saffron, coconut and basmati rice tincture says southern India to me. MD, USA

  • Fantastic photos. This festival sounds like a wonderful gathering and a really cool inspiration for a fragrance. The three florals at the heart of La Fleur seem to play off eachother, but I’m even more intrigued by the basmati rice note in the base, giving a nod to the festival’s cullinary tradition, but also introducing an unexpected texture. Sandi pointed out that this wears relatively close, which sounds beatiful for this combination of notes.

  • I am in the USA. This was such a lovely and eloquent review. I’m new to this brand, as well as the festival; I hadn’t ever heard of Onam before now. The custom of the Rangoli and its meaning in the creation of one, was very touching. A beautiful holiday, not just in the amazing kaleidoscopic art created by families, but also for the spirit of the holiday itself. I truly enjoyed learning about this. Thank you for the wonderful review and the chance to win.

  • What a beautiful celebration. Love that there is a strong rice note in the base. The tradition of the Rangoli is beautiful. I like that this fragrance is based on such a meaningful tradition based on nature and togetherness. Those vibrant colors just make a person happy. I imagine wearing this makes everyone around you happy. I’d love to try this. USA.

  • This sounds delightful and delicious. The citrus with the florals, the rice with the sandalwood, and the vegetal notes of basil and saffron all sound perfectly combined.

Thank you, Sandi, and please include me in the draw!

Really enjoyed reading about this brand and their fragrances.

Onam is the harvest festival and is always a vibrant celebration. A large part of the celebration is the onam meal, a smorgasbord of vegetable curries and dessert and is centered around rice.

This fragrance with it’s basmati accord and rangoli accords are a pretty cool depiction of the idea of Onam.

Would love to sample this fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Sandi, praises the fragrance’s evocative storytelling and elegant execution. She write that the scent is seen as a wearable “festival,” capturing joy, tradition, and communal beauty through its notes. The subtlety of basmati rice in particular adds an intriguing, comforting texture that brings to life the warmth of the Onam festival.
This sounds fun and very unique! From USA.

  • What a beautiful review! I agree, the basmati rice base has an opulent touch. It’s definitely a fragrance that combines rich, traditional scents with delicate, otherworldly floral notes.

The basmati note in Onam captures my interest. I often make Indian food and serve it with basmati rice. I love the smell as it cooks. It was very interesting to learn about the Onam harvest festival. The floral rangoli is really beautiful. The gorgeous notes of jasmine and lotus reflect the beauty of the rangoli. And still more, there are vetiver, labdanum and sandalwood notes to compliment the floal and basmati notes. It is wonderful to share and evoke culture through fragrance.

This scent sounds wonderful through the words of Sandi. The notes that are calling to me are the lotus and rice. I’d love to have a chance at getting this. In the USA.

Le Fleur has my attention!! Hibiscus, lime, coconut, mandarin with oakmoss; interesting combination! I imagine a clean unisex scent with an inviting flourish. Hopefully I can find this in the USA, I’d like to sample it.

  • This is genuinely one of the best scents I’ve ever tested! The fact that it is so unique and blends such nostalgic aromas into a perfume is absolutely amazing! Would love to make it a permanent addition to my vanity box. It’s for sure a whole experience!
